Koobs Nature Area in Carmichael now open to public once a month Visitors to the Koobs Nature Area can enjoy trails like this. Families looking to enjoy and study nature in the Carmichael community are invited to check out the Koobs Nature Area, a 4.7-acre parcel of native trees and other plants newly available to the public for free once a month. Located on Engle Road, the Koobs Nature Area offers many ways to have a meaningful interaction with nature: It can be for families wanting to visit and enjoy the nature trails. It can be for students and individuals using the self-guided tour books to learn about the variety of native species. It can be for those interested doing projects or bird watching, or for scouts meeting requirements for environmental badges. The Koobs Nature Area is a community treasure for its preservation of native habitat for environmental study. It began many years ago with the vision of science teacher Earl Koobs to provide a place for environmental study and served as outdoor learning for the adjacent high school and elementary school. Students
learned through guided tours as well as projects and interaction with the diverse ecosystems and biodiversity found in the area. Koobs’ vision has been carried forward through the dedication, commitment, and hard work of local resident Linda Jones and the support of the Kiwanis Club of Carmichael, Foothill Key Club, Del Campo Key Club, and other community groups. With the closures of the two adjacent schools, the Nature Area became a hidden treasure - still active for some special events, but relatively unknown to the community, and not open to the public. This year, the Kiwanis Club of Carmichael created a signature project to open the
Nature Area to the public, starting with once per month. They obtained grants and budgeted funds to make improvements and enhance security. They continue to schedule work days to maintain the area, keep trails clear, and help native plants thrive. The Koobs Nature Area will be open on the second Saturday of each month ( June 11, July 9, Aug. 13, Sept. 10, Oct. 8) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Kiwanis Club hopes to increase access in the future. Please come out to the nature area to enjoy, and tell others. There is no cost to visitors. Binoculars are available to be loaned for birding. Self-guided tour books are available for the 30 markers throughout the acreage.

Ay Chihuahua:
Sacramento Taco Festival featured the cute babies that are native to Mexico Photos and story by Monica Stark editor@valcomnews.com
On that muggy and hot Saturday of late, June 3, authentically delicious tacos filled hungry tummies, as the toughest Lucha Libre fighters and the cutest Chihuahuas around converged on Del Paso Boulevard for the third annual Sacramento Taco Festival. “ They’re not dogs, they’re not pets. They’re babies,” announced Adrian Perez at the start of the Chihuahua Beauty Contest. Knowing Sacramento is doggedly different compared to L.A. and other cities that have taco festivals, a street festival featuring a mascot that is native to Mexico, the chihuahua. Assisted by Miss City Sacramento Teen Violet Joy Hansen, Perez, helped introduce 14 pups. Winning by popular vote, the one who generated the loudest applause got the crown. There was P Diddy from Sacramento; Davis resident Lily who was dressed as a taco; a 5-year-old two pound baby named Chavalita; a cute little diva girl Gracie; donning a pearl necklace was the absolutely special Lily; Candy, a kiss-loving baby with a crooked tail; the super cool Teddy who likes to wear his bow-tie; Kylie, a North Highlands therapy dog; Diego, a sweet little cry baby; Navia, 10, a returning competitor who’s on a casting list for a dog model; Sandy; Chance, whose owner likes to say: “This is my Chance;” another baby named Chance whose mother while birthing punctured a sibling’s stomach. But the little girl made it and got her chance to live, hence her name. Lastly there was the cat loving Chase who wants to play with all cats even if they don’t like him too much. He came with the name Chance but responded better to Chase. Pearl-wearing Lilly won second runnerup; first runner up is Lily the taco and the winner is Chavalita. The event, held on Del Paso Boulevard between El Camino and Arden Way, sold thousands of tacos made by different taco makers. Vegetarian, chicken, carnitas, adobada, and asada tacos were available, as were more exotic tacos, for those with iron stomachs, made from stomach, intestines, and heads. The wrestlers are professional and can be seen on a variety of levels from World Wrestling Entertainment to local wrestling events. As for the taco eating contest, the winner stated to prepare for the big day he just “eats like crazy all day long.” Beating the average of eating three tacos in a minute, he ate five and earned a trophy and a cash prize. Another contestant said to prepare for the contest, he’s had 28 years of his abuelita (little grandmother) feeding him tacos. Valley Community Newspapers, Inc.

Adding to the festive nature of the rally, the Grant Union High School drumline played a few times that afternoon and the who’s who of Sacramento politicians and celebrities arrived in support of Clinton, including Kevin McCarty and his family, Steve Hansen, Eric Guerra, Darrell Steinberg, Dave Jones and Phil Angelides. Mayor Kevin Johnson and Congresswoman Doris Matsui were amongst those who intro-
duced Clinton, the first of whom received an audible ‘boo’ from the audience. Of all those who took the stage to introduce Clinton perhaps the greatest response came from a St. Francis High School graduating senior who voted in her first election this year. Proud to be passing her vote for Clinton, she volunteered with the campaign in Nevada and California because to her, the presidential hopeful “represents more than just herself. She is the voice for those who are not heard” and “gives voice to the marginalized” from “children who do not receive adequate education” to “women who are still subject to pay gap,” the “LGBT community. She understands the struggles in all people,” she said. “She has given me a voice that would otherwise not be heard. Hillary is transcendent in that she can relate to people in different generations, backgrounds and cultures. My grandmother wants nothing more than to see Hillary in the White House. She wants me to do everything I can to help her get there.” Since Gov. Jerry Brown endorsed Clinton May 31, his chief of staff Nancy McFadden took the microphone to support the Democrat’s tenacity and effectiveness. “(Brown) knows she wants to bring all of us
together and not divide us.” Repeated throughout the afternoon, that message comparing Clinton’s bridge building to Republican nominee’s tactics, McFadden refused to say his name “because he likes his name. He who shall not be named … called climate change a hoax and wants to deport immigrants.” Having had the privilege of knowing Clinton for a long time as a friend and a colleague, Congresswoman Doris Matsui described the nominee as “absolutely remarkable” while noting “she is a lot of fun.” After the congresswoman’s husband Bob Matsui passed away on Jan. 1, 2005, Clinton was one of first people who called and said, “Doris I am so sorry. I know how much you and Bob are so close.” Doris recalled saying what if their granddaughter, who at the time was just a baby, won’t remember Bob Matsui. Quoting Clinton (who was sharing the stage with her) Doris said, “We will continue talking about him through her stories about him.” When Clinton took the stage she applauded California for its progressive ideals. “My husband and I crisscrossed this state which we love. We have a lot of folks that are working hard. Everything I just said, Donald Trump disagrees with. See Hillary, page 7 Valley Community Newspapers, Inc.

He thinks climate change is a hoax, a Chinese hoax. Well he doesn’t know he’s not a scientist. He could come here, talk to science professors. I talk about raising minimum wage, which he doesn’t agree with. He accuses me of playing the woman’s card. If (that means) standing up for raising the minimum wage and equal pay, if so deal me in.” Having started his campaign with insults on Mexican immigrants, followed by insults on Muslims, Trump, according to Clinton, continued attacks with assaults on people with disabilities, 2008 Republican presidential nominee John McCain, and women every chance he gets. “ That’s not what I call unified leadership. That is solely discord and division and a house divided is a house that cannot stand... I will defend women’s right to make her healthcare (decisions). I will defend Planned Parenthood. I will stand up and fight for voting rights and appoint justices that will overturn citizens united. I will bargain collectively, take on the gun lobby.”

Shingle Springs resident Cecilia Maida, 56, said Sunday’s rally was the first political rally she ever wanted to attend in her life because she realizes how high the stakes are. Disabled from a genetic kidney disease, Maida said she also saw Bill Clinton speak in Sacramento State a few weeks ago. When the pastpresident mentioned disabled rights, Maida was brought to tears. “He mentioned it and I cried.” Originally from Texas, Maida keeps in touch with old family and friends who relay more recent stories of Planned Parenthood facilities being shut down. “How many of those (who chose to self-abort) died because they were trying to shut down Planned Parenthood?” Maida grew up before the legalization of abortion. “Anyone who wants to set women back to 1969 (Roe v. Wade was 1973), it’s a slap in the face… This is the election to me for the women.” “We need to put egotistical men in their place… and (Clinton) stands for everything that is right in this country.”

Milagro Centre opens to the public Gathering spot offers a variety of dining options, more By LANCE ARMSTRONG Lance@valcomnews.com
The long-awaited, multimillion dollar Milagro Centre at 6241 Fair Oaks Blvd. is finally open, as its earliest tenants recently began serving the public. This community, regional gathering spot, featuring higher-end cuisine, was the dream of Carmichael resident Allan Davis and his late wife, Nancy, who was the daughter of the late Sacramento developer Joe Benvenuti. Allan, who grew up in the area and graduated from Encina High School in 1964, commented about that dream during an interview with this publication earlier this week. “Our dream was to create an upscale, yet relaxed environment for the region for people to have choices and a fun place to hang out with friends,” he said. “We wanted to create a diverse culinary experience for the area.” Allan said that dream began in about 1993 while he and Nancy were visiting Los Angeles. “We came upon an indoor, open market facility in L.A. and thought it was an intriguing concept that we would like to explore

sometime in the future,” he said. “We were always looking for the right place to establish that dream.” It was not until 2011 that Allan and Nancy located a property that would accommodate their vision. At that time, they learned from a realtor friend named Max Werking that about a 4-acre site, with a dilapidated shopping center, on Fair Oaks Boulevard, south of Marconi Avenue, had become available. The former shopping center, which was known as the Hillside Shopping Center, was located in a 360-foot-long building that was constructed by Kauffman Enterprises. Among the original tenants of the shopping center, which opened in 1960, were Jet TV, Appliances and Hardware, Sacramento Sporting Goods, The Toy Shop, Sylvan Jewelry, Children’s Bootery and the Fabric Center. Upon hearing about the availability of the old shopping center building and its property, Allan and Nancy quickly made an offer on the property, and only a few days later, their offer was accepted. With a site for the project arranged, plans were made with a team of designers for

Carmichael resident Allan Davis stands in front of the recently opened Milagro Centre, which he envisioned establishing with his late wife, Nancy, more than 20 years ago.
the creation of what would become the Milagro Centre. Allan commented about the name, Milagro Centre. “Milagro, which means ‘miracle’ (in Spanish) was because Nancy and I have had several miracles in our lives, and we thought this (center) was just another miracle for Carmichael and the region,” he said. “ That’s how we came up with the name. It just sounded good
and we appreciate all the miracles we had and continue to have.” On Nov. 7, 2013 at 4 p.m., a special ceremony occurred at the site with Supervisor Susan Peters, Esteban Nava, Carmichael’s honorary mayor, and Linda Melody, executive director of the Carmichael Chamber of Commerce. Prior to the ceremony, Nancy spoke about the event. “We like to think outside the box at Milagro Properties, so we’re holding an ungroundbreaking,” she said. “We will have shovels, but they’ll be pointed up to represent the direction we want to take Carmichael.” A day later, work crews began demolition to create the future Milagro Centre using the shell of the old shopping center. The next step in the project was to find a suitable mix of tenants. Allan spoke about the process of selecting those tenants. “We wanted a good mix of tenants where the patrons would have a variety of food choices,” he said. “A concept of the project is for patrons to purchase different types of food and bring
it to a common eating area where they gather with friends and family.” Seating is also available inside each of the businesses in the 46,000-squarefoot, two-building center. The first spot to open was the Milagro Experience event center on the north side of the Milagro Centre, at the former site of the El Dorado Saloon, which was a very popular nightclub during the 1980s and 1990s. The River City Brewing Co., which formerly operated at the Downtown Plaza, was the second of the Milagro Centre’s businesses to open and the first of the site’s food and beverage businesses to serve the public. Another space has been readied to become home to the Carmichael Chamber of Commerce. Allan mentioned that Mesa Mercado, a Mexican restaurant and taco bar, and a gelateria, called Ghiotto Gelato, will “open soon.” Other tenants that have signed leases to operate at the Milagro are Hunt and Gather organic food co-op, See Milagro, page 11 Valley Community Newspapers, Inc.

The Patriot restaurant, Fish Face Poke Bar, Insight Coffee Roasters and Jaynee Cakes custom cakery. The aforementioned common eating area is about a 4,000-square-foot gathering space that divides the north and south buildings of the new center. Allan described this area, which has an indoor-outdoor approach with a large fireplace feature, decorative tile walls and small pool of water at its east end, a concrete floor, tables, chairs, and a sofa and padded chair seating section. “(The skylight) creates a greenhouse effect and we introduced these (large, highpowered) fans,” he said.” “We just wanted to create a comfortable area (through a central dining space with various features) for everybody.” Among the people who have played essential roles in the project is Lani Gannon, business director of the Milagro Centre. Using her background in commercial signage, real estate, design and construction, she assisted with a variety of enhancement projects for the center, including some of its tenant signage and illuminated addresses.
The most notable signage on the property is located at the top of the large arch at the main entrance along Fair Oaks Boulevard. Allan stated that placing an arch at that entrance was not the original plan that was presented to him. “ The designer came up with kind of a mundane entrance that I wasn’t excited about,” he said. “So, I said, ‘Can’t we do something a little more grand to get some attention in this direction?’ And he said, ‘How about a big arch?’ And I said, ‘Ok, we’ll work that into it.’ “And then our logo that we came up with (for the top of the arch), it just had an ‘O’ at the end for ‘Milagro.’ I said, ‘Can’t we change the ‘O’ periodically and put something in there other than (an image of a) pizza?’ And he said, ‘Oh, yeah, that’s a good idea.’ So, now we change it and put things in for the season.” In one instance, a photograph of Nancy, who graduated from Encina High in 1962 and died at the age of 70 on March 19, 2015, was placed at the center of the ‘O’ of the Milagro logo. The logo can also be seen in other places around the new center, as well as on advertising material. Also attracting attention to the site are various trees,

including 22 palms, six of which line Fair Oaks Boulevard in front of the center. The other palms flank a dining strip, with small tables and chairs, at the center of the parking lot. While enjoying a moment under the breeze created by the large overhead fans in the common dining area, Allan expressed his satisfaction with the dream of the Milagro Centre finally becoming a reality. “It’s very satisfying to have this dream of ours fiR A Y
nally come to fruition,” he said. “It’s very rewarding to see the enthusiasm and excitement from all the pa-

trons, and we are all looking forward to the upcoming opening of the remainder of the (center’s) businesses.”

Matias Bombal’s Hollywood The Lobster The MPAA has rated this R A24, the distributor that brings you the most creative and original films is releasing Greek writer/director Yorgos Lanthimos’ first movie in English, “ The Lobster”. Far from what may be considered a traditional movie narrative, this movie dares to do what it likes in the face of the commercial movie world, and frankly I find it a bit of fresh air. The movie is absurd without excuse and fascinating for the moviegoer that wants something to provoke thought and conversation as great art always should. We are shown a world in which society demands that one finds a suitable life partner in an allotted time or
they will be turned into an animal of their choice. If individuals in this society fail to do so, they are given a last chance to find a partner during a short stay at a hotel, which much resembles a sanitarium. This is the last chance for anyone to find a partner, which may be either a male and female or same sex partnership, but as we find out early in the movie, a bi-sexual partnership is no longer an available option. David, played by Colin Farrell has just been dumped and deserted by his female life partner, and faces being turned into an animal before he is even able to grieve the loss of his last relationship. He is taken to the “hotel” where the management tells him what to expect during
his stay. A no- nonsense hotel manager there was played by Olivia Coleman. This movie marches to its own drummer. Other actors you’ll see in this picture include John C. Reilly, Ben Wishaw, L?a Seydoux and Rachel Weisz. The plight of single people as presented in this alternate world of the director’s conjuring are punished by society and thus, this movie becomes a biting social commentary on our real, daily modern life. As things become weirder and weirder for David at the hotel, he awaits his chance a target practice, a skill that will be needed for a sinister reason soon to be revealed in the story line. The movie’s dialogue throughout has that distant
monotone and lifeless quality. Its frankness is emotionless. Curiosity drives David to finds out more about what happens behind the scenes at the hotel and horrified by what he discovers, he decides to escape. He runs into the woods, where he encounters a rebel faction trying to hide from the forced partnership parings and revolt against the system. It is there that he actually begins to develop feelings for a woman that is part of the rebel faction played by Rachel Weisz. This director has made a movie that may cause the effect of nervous laughter at the bizarre and ridiculous aspects of the unfolding story. The outlandishness of some moments will cause an involuntary response of disbelief and curiosity at the very same time.

Other movies I have seen that produced similar reactions from me in the past and that I would classify in similar vein as this production include the cinematic surrealism two of Luis Buñuel’s films, the 1972 release “ The Discrete Charm of the Bourgeoisie” and “ The Exterminating Angel” of 1962. Also, the unusual John Frankenheimer movie “Seconds” of 1966. This offering does not duplicate those films, but creates that sense of unease in how real and unreal the movie seems at the same time whilst creating a powerful statement about human societal behaviors. The use of music in the movie is remarkable, not only in selection, but in placement. A string quartet and quintet by Alfred Schnitke, another by Shostakovich and works by Beethoven, Stravinsky, Richard Strauss and Benjamin Britten, this is not a movie for those wishing a light entertainment. This is cinema as art with much to consider intellectually, to be followed by lengthy discussion with your favorite movie going friends. Some scenes may be very uncomfortable for some viewers. This is not a movie for children. I found it a brilliant, yet odd social commentary.
