NCGA rolls out new NCGA play at Haggin Oaks Events aimed at creating shorter, faster, and more affordable social golf experiences With the goal of creating shorter, faster, more affordable social golf experiences, the Northern California Golf Association is rolling out a series of events over the next three months called NCGA PLAY! Its kickoff party will be hosted at Haggin Oaks Golf Complex in Sacramento on Aug. 13 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and again from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m.

The event is free to the public, and will include fun instruction, games, mini competitions and cool prizes.

NCGA PLAY! is aimed at addressing hurdles golfers face when trying to play the game: how long it can take, how difficult it is to master, and how much it can cost. Events and weekly team leagues will take place at golf courses throughout Sacramento, with the goal of learning from these pilot programs and expanding them to courses throughout Northern California next year. The events are both after work and on weekends and will range between $5-30 for all NCGA members. The NCGA is offering a special $25 rate to join for the rest of 2016 at ncga.org/play.

“NCGA PLAY! is an important initiative that we hope will help more people play more golf more often,” said Joe Huston, executive director of the NCGA. “It is our mission to support and promote the game of golf, so we feel it is important to develop programming

that is attractive to casual and social golfers, as well as tournament players.”

The NCGA hosts up to 500 amateur tournament days each year, provides its members substantial discounts at Poppy Hills in Pebble Beach and Poppy Ridge in Livermore, as well as exclusive merchandise and travel discounts, and also helped found the successful Youth on Course initiative – which allows junior golfers the ability to play golf for just $5 at more than 175 courses in Northern California, as well as more than 300 across the country.

NCGA PLAY! is designed to get more adults on the golf course by legitimizing all forms of golf – from championship courses to 9-hole rounds, par 3 courses, driving ranges and practice putting greens. The initial offerings include 2-player and 4-player teams, Glow Golf at night, plus alternate formats beyond traditional stroke play that incorporate scrambles and even mulligans. Participating courses include Haggin Oaks, Land Park, Emerald Lakes, Bradshaw Golf Ranch and Foothill Golf Center, with more being added throughout the Fall.

Former Jesuit wrestler discusses first year at Iowa State

One of the most successful wrestlers in Jesuit High School’s history, Anthony Wesley, redshirted his initial season as a Cyclone at National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I’s Iowa State last year, wrestling to a 9-11 record while competing unattached.

Stopping home to visit family over the summer, Anthony also checked into Valley Community Newspapers to share what it’s like living in a college town where sports are a way of life and supporting athletes is the norm.

“Everyone supports. Everyone is there. People at Arco Arena, Sleep Train – it feels like that,” Anthony said, describing the atmosphere when he competes on his home turf. That energy empties out of the stadium and into the small city of Ames, Iowa. When out shopping at stores like Target or Walmart, the entire wrestling schedule for Iowa State is proudly displayed along with Cyclone gear for sale. Anthony recalls an outing in which a shopper didn’t recognize him, though he was in uniform and she is a wrestling fan. “You must be a freshman because I don’t know you and I know everybody on the team. Nice to meet you.”

Last April, at the USA Wrestling: 2016 University Greco-Roman National Championships in Las Vegas he took third place in his weight class. The No. 1 seed, a technical fall led him to falling to third place.

Two months later, he competed in the 2016 Asics UWW Cadet and University Nationals at the University of Akron in Ohio (where LeBron James is from). “ That was tough to make,” he said.

The team is coached by the decorated Olympic gold medalist Kevin Jackson. In wrestling, Iowa State has won eight national team titles and 15 conference team titles including winning the last three Big 12 titles. Iowa State wrestlers have claimed 66 individual national titles, Valley Community Newspapers, Inc.

and 16 Iowa State wrestlers have participated in the Olympics resulting in five gold, one silver, and two bronze medals, according to the team’s Wikipedia page.

Asked to describe his coach further, Anthony said, “he’s tough but there’s two sides of him: Coach Jackson in the room and KJ outside. He makes sure we’re alright emotionally. He’s asked about dad a few times, mom a few times. When we get in the room, it’s business time.”

While wrestling for Jesuit, Anthony made two Sacramento All-Star teams, two national teams, received three national medals, is a two-time league finalist, and a two-time masters qualifier.

He became the sixth wrestler in school history to qualify for the CIF State Championships. The first preseason state rankings in November 2013 placed him in the honorable mention section, but Anthony went undefeated in the month of December, winning four tournaments and winning the outstanding wrestler award in three of them.

His father, August Wesley, the current wrestling coach at Sacramento State University and former Jesuit High School wrestling coach, has been coaching high school, college, and international level teams since he was 20 years old.

Iowa State allows the students a year to acclimate to the college lifestyle. And that means making the grade ... an A, that is. Maintaining a B average in his classes, Anthony hopes to bring up his grade point average.

“They make sure you’re on top of stuff,” he said. And the team makes sure as well.

Seven guys didn’t turn in grade checks, so the entire team had to do seven stadium runs. “Everyone was mean mugging. We were so upset... it’s never easy. It obviously works.”

Unlike the clichéd “freshman 15” – an expression used referring to 15 pounds of weight gained during a student’s first year at college – Anthony had to drop more than 20 pounds to “make weight.” From 160 down to 138 pounds, pre-season, which starts late September, early October, helped get Anthony in shape. And he was ranked second in his weight class (141 pounds).

“There’s a method. You eat fewer carbs, more fruits, vegetables; you just drink water, no Kool Aid, no soft drinks – that slows you down. You can have a protein shake. I have a lot of white meats, chicken, fish. I can cook.”

Speaking about the difference between wrestling at the high school level compared to the college level, Anthony said, “Everyone there is good, especially at the Division 1 level. There’s not one guy that’s a scrub. Day in and day out, I am getting better, especially with a decorated coach.”

One of the more versatile freshmen on the team, Anthony performs well in both the Olympic and collegian styles of wrestling.

Like most every college wrestler, he hopes next year to win the NCAA Championships, or “at least be a Big 12 champ in the conference,” he said. “You get a gift for going into 12 Champs.”

Last year, he got a portable speaker and charger that proudly states: Big 12 championships, Iowa State.

Koobs Nature Area reopens to the public Where can I go with my family to enjoy and study nature in the Carmichael community?

The Koobs Nature Area offers many ways to have a meaningful interaction with nature. It can be a family visiting and enjoying the nature trails. It can be students and individuals using the self-guided tour books to learn about the variety of native species. It can be those interested doing projects, making counts, bird watching, or scouts meeting requirements for environmental badges.

The Koobs Nature Area is a community treasure for its preservation of native habitat for environmental study.

It began many years ago with the vision of science teacher Earl Koobs to provide a place for environmental study and served as outdoor learning for the adjacent high school and elementary school. Students learned through guided tours as well as projects and interaction with the diverse ecosystems and biodiversity found in the area. His vision has been carried forward through the dedication, commitment, and

hard work of Linda Jones, with support of the Kiwanis Club of Carmichael, Foothill Key Club, Del Campo Key Club, and other community groups.

With the closures of the two adjacent schools, the Nature Area became a hidden treasure—still active for some special events, but relatively unknown to the community, and not open to the public. This year, the Kiwanis Club of Carmichael created a signature project to open the Nature Area to the public, for now once per month. They obtained grants and budgeted funds to make improvements and enhance security. They continue to schedule work days to maintain the area, keep trails clear, and help native plants thrive. They need to get the word out to tell the community that this is a great place for families and kids to come to be close to nature and learn about plants and animals native to our community.

The timing was perfect, as the California Montessori Project school opened up next to the Nature Area. The school teachers, parents, and student have

strongly embraced the nature area as a place for student learning. Parents and students from the school regularly work alongside of Kiwanians, and others to maintain and enhance the area.

The Koobs Nature Area will be open on the second Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This is a start, with the

hope of increasing access in the future. Specifically, the dates that are open are Aug. 13, Sept.

10, and Oct. 8. Please come out to the nature area to enjoy, and tell others. There is no cost to visitors. Binoculars are available to be loaned for birding. Self-guided tour books are available for the thirty markers throughout the acreage.

The property is 4.7 acres of native plants (many trees). It has a riparian ecosystem of three ponds fed by a creek.

mental study by Garfield Elementary until it closed in 2011.

Once the schools closed, the area was little used other than for the veterans events. It was maintained by the Kiwanis Club of Carmichael and a local gardening group. Last year, the idea was proposed to open the nature area to the public, initially once per month.

Grants were received and some improvements made. A grand opening was held on Earth Day 2016. Since then it has been opened on the second Saturday of each month.

Each time we’ve had 65 or more families visit. Troop 55 of the scouts use the nature area for camping and skills practice. Members of the Kiwanis Club of Carmichael set up canopies with information, exhibits, and hands-on activities to augment families going out to explore the nature area.

This is a signature project of the Kiwanis Club of Carmichael. there is no cost to

visitors. This is our “learning year�. We may open it more than once per year next year, but would need to get more members to help and/or community members.

The California Montessori school is adjacent. The school has embraced the nature area and classes use it regularly for environmental study. Some parents help with projects in the nature area. The school uses it often as much as three times per week during the school year.

A subcommittee was formed to determine the logistics to open the nature area. I am the chairperson of that group at present. Jack Koobs was a long-time Kiwanian until his passing. Linda Jones, of the Kiwanis Club, is the guiding force of the nature area for many years. “I pushed the brooms a little bit, I did studio set up for sessions, and then when records would come in, I would do the stocking,” he said. “I would pull them off the truck and put them in groups by band (names) in the stock room, so that when the bands came to pick up their 45s, they were all neatly stacked.”

Jim also learned about the music business from his cousin, who he would sit with in the control room during sessions.

Jim said that it was also during his teenage years when he acquired his passion for radio.

“When I was 13 years old, I was calling all the KROY disc jockeys, Jack Hammer, Hal Hopkins, Johnny Hyde, you know all those guys, going, ‘Hey, I want to be a DJ, give me some advice,’” he said.

“And there wasn’t a lot of advice. I mean, ‘Do it.’ And that’s the best advice for anyone with any kind of passion.”

In 1967, Jeff ’s dream of working as a disc jockey became a reality through a local DJ named Curly Cobb, who was a friend of his father.

Jeff recalled that experience, saying, “Curly said, ‘Hey, we have an opening at the station, KXRQ (98.5 FM), and if you’re interested you can come down and talk to me. So, I went down and talked to him.”

Jeff Hughson worked at Sacramento radio station, KZAP 98.5 FM, from 1968 to 1971.

Jeff, who was then 17 and a junior at in high school, was hired as the DJ for an allnight jazz show and a Sunday morning blues show.

As a young DJ, Jeff idolized John Skorakis, who was both a state worker and a DJ at KXRQ. Jeff recalled Skorakis as a man who dressed in suits with skinny ties and was “always sharp, very hip and cool.”

“I just thought he was about the greatest thing ever,” Jeff said. “I was a big fan.”

Jeff added that it was also Skorakis who informed him that KXRQ would cease existence “(Skorakis) said, ‘Well, we’ve got two more weeks to work and then they’re selling the station,’” he recalled.

After some inquiry about the future station, which would become KZAP, Jeff spoke to Ed FitzGerald, the first general manager of that station.

During his interview with FitzGerald at his parents’ house, Jeff showed FitzGerald his large record collection, which he obtained through spending most of his spare money at Thrifty Drug Store at 55712 Folsom Blvd. and Tower Records at 1518 Broadway.

Jeff recalled FitzGerald’s reaction to his record collection.

“He went into my bedroom and he about fell over, because the bedroom was floor to ceiling, wall to wall albums,” he said. “It was during the time period when they were liquidating mono records and you

could get them for 50 cents (each). My favorite price was always five for $1.38.

“Anyhow, he looked around and there were like musical categories, alphabetical by artists and chronological by year of release. You know, first, second, third, fourth. He looked at that and goes, ‘You could be our music director.’ I said, ‘That would be great, I’d love to.’ So, he hired me.”

Jeff added that FitzGerald had hoped that he could use his records at KZAP. “He thought, ‘Hmm, maybe he’ll let us use his records,’” he said. “And I was comfortable letting him think that, because I wanted the job. But there was no way on God’s green Earth I was going to let my pristine record collection get beat up

by a bunch of DJs. I’d been a DJ. I’d seen records at radio station libraries.”

Jeff recalled that only a month after his graduation from high school in June 1968, he attended preliminary meetings for the station at FitzGerald’s home in Rancho Cordova.

“We met in (FitzGerald’s) living room – me and Charlie Weiss and (program director) Paul Merriam and maybe Cary Nosler and a few other characters (who were hired to work at KZAP),” he said.

FitzGerald, Jeff said, played an essential role in KZAP’s existence on the 13th floor of the Elks Building, where KRXQ had previously operated.

America, you know, he had to kind of sweet talk the Elks to let him come into the building,” he said. “He joined the Elks, he went to their meetings.”

And in describing the soonto-be-on-the-air station, FitzGerald presented the Elks with a very limited description of KZAP, which would originally operate with a freeform format.

Jeff described free-form as follows: “Free-form radio is really simple. The disc jockey, the announcer who’s on the air, has the freedom to do anything he wants. Anything, play any kind of music, poets, interviews, children’s stories, actualities. One of my favorite records on KZAP was the tribes of New Guinea, which (produced) tribal chants. You know, and you would segue way into Santana and stuff.”

Jeff added that the greatest number of songs originally played on KZAP were songs by new rock bands.

“Percentage wise, probably the biggest style of music was the new rock bands, because it all came together,” he said. “You know, demographics, political revolution, baby boomers, and all these new bands are coming out and they could get no air play anywhere else. They weren’t getting played on top 40. They’re San Francisco bands, Steve Miller, Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane.”

The debut of KZAP occurred nearly 48 years ago.

After KZAP employees worked to redesign the studio, the station officially signed on the air at 6 a.m. on Nov. 8, 1968.

Jeff explained that KZAP played an important role in a unique time in history.

“We were in the eye of the hurricane,” he said. “All of our peers, be it musicians, artists, activists, teachers, whatever, we were changing the world.

“It was the same kind of social and cultural, political revolution that hit Berlin in the 1920s and Paris in the (postwar) 1940s and New York in the 1950s and San Francisco in the 1960s.

You know, we changed the world. And I could point to a string of successes. Did we stop war? No, it turns Valley Community Newspapers, Inc.

“We were doing our part in the revolution to change the world. And I would argue that we succeeded on many fronts. Ecology, politically in terms of political choice in America, whole foods, back to the land, back to the Earth movement.

PETA (People for Ethical Treatment of Animals) and all those kind of things I would allege all grew out of the radio I did and others like me did in the late 1960s and the early 1970s.”

After about two and a half years of working at KZAP, Jeff continued his radio work as a DJ at the Sacramento FM radio stations, KNDE, KSFM and KXOA-FM. He left the latter station in about 1974.

He eventually held a variety of jobs, including producing concerts, fairs, festivals, rodeos and other events, working as the entertainment director at the Contra Costa County Fair, and operating a mail order business, selling records and music memorabilia.

Jeff currently provides publicity work for the multiEmmy-winning singer-songwriter Bob Cheevers, and is the executive producer of a documentary film, called “Free-form, Baby!: The FM Radio Revolution.”

The film, which is directed

by Mark Herzig, is scheduled to be released in early 2017.

Jeff commented about why he decided to end his career in radio.

“I gave it up because all my radio experience after that meant nothing compared to doing KZAP,” he said. “KZAP was beyond special. It was a unique experience and you had to be in the right place at the right time with the right knowledge, and we changed the face of radio. Now it’s gotten worse than the top 40 that we replaced.

“But you know what?

These other jobs that I had I did it because I was a DJ and they issued checks every two weeks. But KZAP, I did it because I loved doing it. And KZAP wrote checks, too. They were just a lot smaller than the other checks.”

Annalee in Wonderland: Young immigrant advances life and beauty salon in Carmichael Beautician to give free haircuts to seniors next month

Born in Ho Chi Minh City (Southern Vietnam), Annalee Nguyen came to the United States in 2006 at the young age of 14. “In order to get my citizenship quickly, I was supposed to live with my Dad in Georgia. He wasn’t around when I was growing up so we didn’t have the typical father/daughter relationship, which resulted in my leaving right away. My Mom had come to the U.S. two years before me, so I went to live with her in Sacramento.”

Although she’s a mere 5-feet, 2 inches, don’t let that fool you.

She has a large presence and is one of the strongest and kindest people you’ll meet. She attributes these qualities to her Mom. “As far as I remember, it’s always been just my Mother and me. She is a strong independent woman who lived her whole life to work hard so that I can have everything even if she had nothing. She’s had a tough life. She was a single parent trying to make it in a 3rd world country. Because of her, I grew up a little earlier than other kids. I became independent, responsible – all my good qualities are because of her.”

Life in Vietnam was very different. Annalee was a trouble maker. “Family complications affected me a lot, however, sometimes reality hits you like a wrecking ball and wakes you up. After coming to the US, seeing many truths revealed, seeing what happened to my mom (cancer) woke me up. I realized I had to grow up.” From a Junior High dropout in Vietnam to a 4.1 straight A High School student in the US, Annalee found she had an affinity for Math. Even though she was just learning English, she had the top grades in her first Math class. She was put in Honors Math classes throughout her entire HS years. In her Senior year she won 1st place in the Trigonometry Star Contest and won a scholarship to be a Land Surveyor. She turned it down and decided to Valley Community Newspapers, Inc.

double major in Computer Science and Electrical Engineering at Sac State. “I shouldn’t have turned down the scholarship but I thought I needed to prove something to my Dad. I was wrong. I shouldn’t have had the need to prove anything to anyone. I started working a couple of jobs and went to school at the same time. I saved up, and with a student loan, I got through school.

Annalee opened Class and Sass Salon in May. Upon entering the Salon, you are greeted with a stylishly designed Salon that is impeccably clean. Bright colors and happy customers are the landscape. Located at 5841 Fair Oaks Blvd. Ste A, in Carmichael, she admits opening a hair salon is kind of an unlikely venture for someone with a degree in Electrical Engineering, but after much prodding from her Mom and friends, she got her Cosmetology license.

“I’ve always been passionate about art and beauty, but growing up in Vietnam, where people don’t have enough money to buy food, a career in Art was unheard of. Life was very hard in Vietnam. Most people could barely afford to feed themselves and their families three meals a day, how could they afford to buy any luxuries like a piece of art. It made sense, so I listened, but didn’t give up. I designed and drew clothes instead, thinking that people would always need and buy clothes. I wanted to be a fashion designer when I grew up but my dream changed when I came to the U.S.,” she said.

Annalee had heard about the U.S. from her Father. He told her the U.S. was “Wonderland”, where things were advanced and magical, the land of opportunity. “It truly is the land of opportunity, I would not have been able to afford to go to college without financial aid and the other programs the school and government offer. You have to grab the opportunity when it presents itself. You have to educate yourself on them, use

them, work with them and/or even work for them in order to keep them and succeed.” While putting herself through school, Annalee worked numerous jobs, office assistant, receptionist, waitress, and Smartphone technician, but nothing made her feel as good as when she worked on hair. She found she could be creative and practical at the same time. “My mom wasn’t like other typical Asian moms. She didn’t want me to be a doctor, or lawyer, or anything else that I didn’t want to be. She saw me cutting, styling, and coloring my own hair since high school and encouraged me to get my Cosmetology License. I finally listened and took a break from getting my engineering degree. I went to a local Beauty School and started working there, which led to working at Master Cuts. I realized I loved doing hair. It wasn’t a job, it’s a passion. I could do anything with hair, turn it into any shape, any style, and make people happy. I opened Class and Sass because I wanted to take care of my clients in my own way. I didn’t want to have limits. I give my employees the freedom to express themselves and their talents without the restriction of time. What’s important to me is quality over quantity.”

Lewis Carroll, in Alice in Wonderland wrote, “It’s no use going back to yesterday, because I was a different person then.” Annalee was a different person in her youth. ” I’ve made some horrible decisions, wrecked a car a month after I got it, but I fixed them and made some more mistakes and fixed them again. Even though I chose the wrong path and have made many wrong decisions, I now wouldn’t regret a thing because I’ve learned so much from my mistakes. I’ve met many great people and made many friends. These factors have shaped me to become who I am today.” Annalee Nguyen, college graduate, devoted daughter, home owner and now business owner.

Annalee believes very strongly in senior citizen causes, so she would like to offer all seniors 65-plus free haircuts for the month of September 2016. A small donation is appreciated but not

necessary. Donations will go to benefit REACH, an organization dedicated to helping seniors stay in their homes.

Lead Sylvan Architect Laura Knauss of Lionakis said she’s excited to see the STEAM curriculum come to life because the campus was designed around sustainability and 21st-century learning. She said STEAM is a focus that will benefit all students.

Matías Bombal’s Hollywood CAFE SOCIETY

The MPAA has rated this PG-13 Woody Allen’s “Cafe Society” is released by Amazon Studios and Lionsgate and marks the first time that the master director has photographed a movie in digital format, a transition from using actual motion picture film negative that he has entrusted to the capable hands of cinematographer Vittorio Storaro, who has lit this movie with the inner radiance of a painting by Maxfield Parrish. In the golden light of an idealized past, with comedy, we are told the story of young Bobby, who at loose ends in New York, needs a job. His mother calls on her brother, an actor’s agent in Hollywood, to give him a job at the coast.

After arriving in tinseltown, at that time, at the peak of movie studio greatness, Bobby waits a long time to meet his uncle Phil Stern. Uncle Phil has little time for him or anyone else.

Steve Carell plays Phil Stern, whose character’s name may have been a tip of the hat from Woody Allen to the NBC sports announcer of that era Bill Stern. Bobby is played by Jesse Eisneberg. Phil is just too busy to give Bobby the time of day, so he asks his secretary Vonnie to show him the town.

After seeing a few sights they stop in for a bite in a little Mexican restaurant off the beaten bath, and Bobby confesses he’s interested in her.

During their lunch and to the strains of Harry Warren and Al Dubin’s “I Only Have Eyes for You” played by Ben Selvin’s orchestra, she informs Bobby she has a married boyfriend, who will prove to be quite problematic for Bobby when he finds out who he really is. Bobby gets involved in the nightclub business through a racketeer relative and returns to New York to forget Vonnie, or at least try. There he becomes enchanted by Veronica, played by Blake Lively.

The entire soundtrack is joyfully filled with the exquisite musical taste of Woody Allen. There are many Rogers and Hart selections, among others, including a few in classic recordings such as Benny Goodman’s 1939 recording of “I Didn’t Know What Time It Was” featuring a vocal by Louise Tobin. Ms. Tobin, former wife of both Harry James and Peanuts Hucko is still living in the Dallas area! Good for her. Newly recorded delights by Vince Giordano, whose Nighthawks in New York lead the vintage music preservation scene there today, include a version of “Manhattan” that is so creamy and delicious, it will linger in your mind for many pleasant days. SONY Classics has released a sound track album featuring fifteen selections and it is excellent, you’ll want to add it to your collection.

port to finish the total effect of the moment. It occurs as Bobby gets to know Veronica one late evening in a jazz club in New York. The use of music by the director one of the most subtle and delightful aspects of Allen’s creativity in this and many other of his other movies. Often you will hear an instrumental, played under the dialog. If you know the tune and recall whilst watching the unheard lyric in the soundtrack, you will find exactly how Allen works magic with music in the movies. Invariably that unheard lyric directly ties in with the action on the screen, an added bonus that connects at that level for those who appreciate the music of the great American songbook.

Ms. Lively is radiant as Veronica, just the way a glamorous star should appear on the screen. This is a special movie. Parker Posey livens up the production as a curly haired blonde in her singular manner and the picture also stars Corey Stoll, Jeannie Berlin and Ken Stott. The

era is beautifully and lovingly recreated from costumes to set dressing.

Even though Mr. Allen has embarked on a new movie already, one never really knows if it may be the last and I savored every moment. As an artist who has given us at least one new movie every single year since 1982 and going back to 1965 almost every year, one must admire his output. I find him clever, brilliant and nostalgic, all values I highly admire and which are all there on the screen for you to see in this movie.

Allen narrates the picture in his own voice and I was saddened slightly to hear his voice wane with age; a once crisp and sharp voice with rapid fire zingers is now slow and deliberate and filled with a wistfulness that permeates the picture. Seeing a Woody Allen movie is like a first date; filled with great hope and possibility, an occasional moment of awkwardness, a sparkle of champagne, and the full knowledge that it must end soon. I urge you to see this one, it is beautiful.

SATURDAY, AUG. 13 THE KOOBS NATURE AREA WILL BE OPEN: The Koobs Nature Area will be open on the second Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This is a start, with the hope of increasing access in the future.

Specifically, the dates that are open are Aug. 13, Sept.

More information about FORB and Sutter’s Landing at http:// www.friendsoftheriverbanks.org BABY BOOMER FESTIVAL AND EXPO IN ROSEVILLE (SOME PROCEEDS BENEFIT CARMICHAEL ELKS): The Baby Boomer Festival and Expo is scheduled for the Placer County Fair and Events Center in Roseville. The event focuses on the good memories, the nostalgia, the dreams and the needs of America’s “Boomer Generation,” folks now 50 to 70 years of age. The show will feature over 60 exhibitors in Jones Hall and the outside stage area covering topics related to health, finance, home improvement and entertainment.

This festival is a delightful day of information and entertainment. Performers will include the Road Test Band, playing the music of the Rolling Stones, Beach Boys, Santana, and others of the Boomer Era. The music stage also showcases Award-Winning Elvis tribute artist Gene Lane, veteran of 15 tours to Japan, Paris, the Bahamas and voted best Elvis in Las Vegas at the Thunder Valley Casino. The Boomer Classic Car Show is being organized by the Cruisin’ Garage KAHI radio program staff, and will feature a large number of vintage vehicles coming from the Tri-Counties region. Car registration fees will be donated to the Lions Club of Newcastle for their various community projects. The Beer & Wine Garden proceeds will be for the benefit of the Carmichael Elks Lodge, and a variety of food will be available throughout the day. The event will be held from 10 am to 4 pm at the Placer County Fairgrounds at 800 All America City Boulevard in Roseville.
