ARC Theatre goes online with stunning, relevant production of “Fires in the Mirror” The New York Times described Anna Deavere Smith’s Fires in the Mirror as “...quite simply, the most compelling and sophisticated view of racial and class conflict that one could hope to encounter,” and American River College (ARC) Theatre’s production of the work honors that legacy in every way. The play will be available for online streaming on October 9, 10, 16, and 17. Produced amidst the current outcry to violence against Blacks in America, this moving piece of “documentary theater” was written in 1991 during and after the race riots in Crown Heights (Brooklyn), New York. These riots began after the deaths of a Black American boy and a young Orthodox Jewish scholar in a
small corner of New York, but reflected the pent-up tensions from a much greater area. Smith interviewed more than 50 people, ultimately honing the play into 26 monologues taken verbatim from the interviews. Although the riots were between the Black and Jewish communities decades ago, the voice of each interviewed person rings with a truth that modern audience will find both powerful and chilling. Director Sam Williams’ passion for and approach to Fires in the Mirror drew the attention not only of local student actors but of ARC Theatre’s alums from across the country as well. Thus, actors from New York and Chicago are featured alongside local community theater vet-
erans and experienced college actors. Originally, Anna Deavere Smith performed all 26 “characters” herself. In this production, the many Black and Jewish people featured are played by men and women of multiple ages and ethnicities. Smith’s interviews included both the well-known and the unknown, including people connected directly with riots as well as those on
greatly affected. Portrayals of Reverend Al Sharpton, playwrights George C. Wolfe and Ntozake Shange, and activists Angela Davis and Sonny Carson appear, as do author Letty Cottin Pogrebin, Rabbis Shea Hecht and Joseph Spielman, and physicist Aaron Bernstein. We also meet local residents from both communities, including Carmel Cato, whose 7-year-old
the fringes whose lives were
son was killed in the traffic
accident that sparked the riot, and Norman Rosenbaum, whose brother was killed the same day. ARC’s production of Fires in the Mirror, which will also feature original music by David Williams, will be available through the publisher’s streaming service. To view the show, go to http://arctheatre. org in advance to secure a digital ticket. The cost of each ticket is “pay-what-you-can,” which will help defray the many expenses involved in the production. For more information, go to http://arctheatre.org or email SheareT@ arc.losrios.edu.

Limelight Cardroom Re-opens for Outdoor Gaming On Sept. 30, the Limelight Cardroom announced they have officially re-opened for outdoor gaming at their Sacramento cardroom. The new outdoor gaming setup will allow the cardroom to keep customers and employees safe while providing for the restart of gaming activity. Limelight will be able to restore the jobs of more than 30 employees, many of whom have been out of work while the cardroom has remained closed during the pandemic. In preparation to begin outdoor gaming, Limelight worked with County officials to help ensure that its thorough outdoor gaming safety plans were in place. “The health and safety of our guests and employees is our top priority, and the setup and protocols we have in place as we launch outdoor gaming reflects this commitment,” said Limelight Card-
room Owner John Mikacich. “We thank our local and state officials who have worked alongside us to make it possible for our cardroom to bring back our employees and guests outdoors. We’re continuing to work closely with them to ensure the health and safety of everyone involved.” For outdoor gaming, card tables will be set up on the cardroom’s covered patio with social distancing in effect. The new setup and safety protocols will include five, physically-distanced tables with dividers separating guests along with mandatory masks for all and thorough sanitization of all cards and chips in rotation. Current available table games are Blackjack, Baccarat, Threecard Poker, and Ultimate Texas Hold’em. “We are so grateful to be able to reopen outdoors and

bring our employees and guests back in a safe manner,” said Limelight Cardroom Manager Stan Seiff. “The response to our reopening has been incredible and we’re looking forward to welcoming everyone back and being a source of safe entertainment for our community during these times.” The Limelight cardroom voluntarily shut down at the start of the pandemic in March and has remained closed over the last seven months. While Limelight Cardroom’s doors remained closed, Limelight Cafe has been working with Feed the Frontlines 916, a group helping to feed local healthcare workers while also supporting local restaurants and their employees. Through this partnership, Limelight Cafe has helped supply over 4,200 meals for frontline work-

1,600 meal kits to date with this program. For more information on the safety precautions and protocols being taken by Limelight cardroom to ensure guest and employee safety, please visit www.limelightcardroom.com/safety.

Local mask making group has made more than 52,000 masks and surgical caps for healthcare workers By Zahra Hamdani
We put on a mask while at work, which is our new normal. As COVID-19 became more widespread, CDC guidelines recommended people wear masks but personal protective equipment was in rare supply. The Sacramento region was no exception to the mask shortage and a talented seamstress and a social media guru created and managed the Folsom Mask Makers (FMM) group on Facebook in early March in response to this immediate health need. Then Folsom residents Karla Burgess and Karen Hamer became the group’s managers after the founders stepped aside. The group consists of 1,500 people of which 100
are active members. They are motivated volunteers who have sewn and donated more than 52,000 masks, which is an astounding output for a handmade product. Similar to organizations, a simple, clear mission unites the group. “They need to do something to help,” Hamer said. This strong commitment without monetary compensation shows in FMM’s remarkable success. Another ingredient in the group’s success is that members choose tasks that align with their skill set or that they are willing to learn. FMM has tutorials and video links for its free products, along with a mentorship program that pairs experienced seamstresses with novices. see MASKS page 5

Masks:

Also, the group is divided into teams so that members can decide how they wish to help and they can join more than one team. The sewing team sews fitted or pleated masks. Another team sews visual masks that have a see-through compartment for the lips, which are useful for the hearingimpaired. Members also sew surgical caps for healthcare workers and they have made more than 2,000 surgical caps.
Plus, people who do not sew can also participate in the mask process. For instance, one team washes and irons the new cotton fabrics that are donations or that Karen purchases. Another team assembles kits for people who only want to sew by cutting fabric and adding other necessary items. A third team bags masks and a fourth team are drivers who pick up supplies and masks, along with delivering masks to recipients. Another way that members get involved is by using 3-D printers to create templates, face shields, and ear savers, along with knitted ones. FMM has donated 4,000 ear savers so far that provide an alternative to putting a mask’s loops around the ears. FMM serves El Dorado, Placer, and Sacramento counties and the recipients are area hospitals, such Sutter and UCDMC, as well as school districts, nonprofits, and other Valley Community Newspapers, Inc.
businesses. People who are interested in getting masks or other products for their workplace fill out a form and one of the managers makes contact. FMM mobilizes to have requests ready as quickly and as close to specifications as possible so that recipients will make use of them. Any one interested in joining FMM can put in a request. People can also support FMM by donating money or materials in this venture that can touch hearts and protect against COVID-19. The group has several ways to donate: a Go Fund Me page, Amazon wish list, and through Friends of Folsom. Be sure to write in the comments section that the donation is for Folsom Mask Makers when donating through the Friends of Folsom site. Ask the DMV: What you need to know about accessing DMV services online In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the DMV is prioritizing customer and employee safety and increasing the number of transactions that can be completed without a visit to a DMV field office. The DMV has several channels to better serve customers, including self-service options online or at DMV kiosks, the ability to complete transactions online or over the phone with help from a DMV representative, or via a DMV business partner so that customers can “visit” the DMV by other means. The following questions address the most convenient ways to access DMV services and complete essential transactions without stepping foot in a field office. Q1: My driver’s license is expiring soon. Can I renew my license online? A: Yes, you can renew your license online. Governor Gavin Newsom signed executive orders waiving in-person renewals for eligible driver’s license and identification cardholders who had reached their maximum out-of-office renewals. With that wavier in effect for the length of California’s State of Emergency, or until modified, nearly all California drivers young-

er than age 70 are eligible to renew their license online or by mail. The DMV is providing an automatic one-year extension to drivers age 70 and older with a non-commercial driver’s license with an expiration date between March 1 and December 31, 2020. The California Department of Motor Vehicles is encouraging eligible Californians to renew their driver’s licenses online and avoid visiting DMV field offices at this time, even if their mailed renewal notice states an office visit is required. You can start the process by visiting dmv.ca.gov and clicking on “Driver License & ID Cards”. However, Californians applying for a REAL ID for the first time must visit a field office to complete their transaction. The DMV strongly encourages REAL ID applicants to fill out the online application, upload the required documents and bring their confirmation code with them before their office visit. To get started, please visit: realid. dmv.ca.gov. Learn more about online license renewals at www.dmv. ca.gov. Q2: I am a senior over the age of 70 with a driver’s license that is about to expire. Does the DMV require inperson visits for customers over age 70, or can I renew my license online like everyone else? A: The California Department of Motor Vehicles is working hard to help Californians stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, and senior drivers are no exception. The DMV is providing an automatic one-year extension to drivers age 70 and older with a non-commercial driv-

er’s license with an expiration date between March 1 and December 31, 2020. This action delays the requirement for many seniors to visit a DMV office during the COVID-19 pandemic. While the new extensions are automatic, drivers will not receive a new card or paper extension in the mail. As an option, drivers can request a free temporary paper extension online beginning July 15 through DMV’s website, though it is not needed to drive. Californians with a suspended license are not eligible. Drivers over the age of 70 can find information on DMV services, safety guidelines, and other resources by visiting www.dmv.ca.gov/ seniors. Q3: How can I renew my expiring vehicle registration? A: In an effort to keep customers and employees safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, the California Department of Motor Vehicles is encouraging Californians to utilize online services for all vehicle registration renewals. Most online registration services are self-serve, meaning you can complete them on your own from start to finish. Others are “assisted”, meaning they are done with help from a virtual DMV representative. Online registration is convenient and safe. Customers can avoid a trip to a DMV office by visiting dmv. ca.gov and clicking on “Vehicle Registration” at the top of the page. Additionally, for even greater convenience, DMV customers can visit a DMV Now kiosk to complete their vehicle registration renewal instantly, including printing tags on the spot. With hundreds of locations through-
out the state, customers can also use a DMV Now kiosk to submit proof of insurance, receive a driver or vehicle record, and much more. To locate a DMV Now kiosk nearest you, please visit: www.cadmvnowkiosk.com/ kiosks. Customers can also find DMV business partners, such as AAA and others, to complete selected transactions by visiting dmv.ca.gov and clicking on “Locations” to find nearby options. Please note that some customers who opt to renew their registration by mail may experience delays in receiving their valid registration card and sticker due to COVID-19 impacts on DMV mail sorting operations. Online and DMV Now kiosk registration renewals are not subject to any processing delays at this time. Learn more about online registration renewals at www. dmv.ca.gov/online. Q4: I would prefer to visit the DMV in person, is that an option for me? A: The health and safety of all customers and Californians is top priority for the DMV during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the DMV has reopened its field offices to assist customers with appointments and selected service needs that must be completed in a field office. The DMV is urging customers to use their expanded online services and DMV Now Kiosks to complete transactions, including driver’s license and vehicle registration renewals. There are hundreds of DMV Now kiosks locations throughout the state which can help customers complete their vehicle registration renewal, submit proof of insurance, receive a driver or vehicle
record, and more. To locate a DMV Now kiosk nearest you, please visit: www.cadmvnowkiosk.com/kiosks. Customers can also find DMV business partners to complete selected transactions by visiting dmv.ca.gov and clicking on “Locations” to find nearby partners. Customers who come into a DMV office during this time for service needs that must be completed in a DMV field office during the COVID-19 pandemic will find increased health and safety protocols, including the use of infrared thermometers to conduct temperature checks before scheduled appointments for customers, and before a shift starts for employees. Additionally, all employees and customers are required to wear a face covering while inside an office and during a behindthe-wheel drive test exam, and practice six feet of physical distancing. Customers should anticipate longer than usual wait times while these preventive measures are in place. Visit the DMV’s online portal to use the DMV’s Service Advisor tool to learn what options are available to you at www.dmv.ca.gov/online. If you have a question regarding DMV services or REAL ID, please email AsktheDMV@dmv.ca.gov, or visit www.dmv.ca.gov.
