“Murders, Mysteries, and Misdemeanors in Northern California” history book now available By Monica Stark
A new history book titled “Murders, Mysteries, and Misdemeanors in Northern California,” was released by Arcadia Publishing on Sept. 28, 2020. From promotional materials on the new book reads the following: Northern California has a fascinating criminal history. Some of America’s most infamous criminals and outlaws lived and died in the area, including John Paul Chase, partner of Public Enemy Number One, Lester “Baby Face Nelson” Gillis. Others have come from far afield to exploit the opportunities of Californian crime. Englishman Charles Boles, AKA “Black Bart the Poet,” was only one of many. With crime, naturally, comes punishment. In 1937, the Folsom Five tried to escape, murdering Warden Clarence Larkin in the process. Instead of escaping Folsom, they entered California’s history as the first men to die in its new gas chamber the next year. The legendary Battle of Alcatraz ended in bloodshed and recriminations from prison staff and convicts alike, with accusations that staff needlessly endangered convicts’ lives and arranged the wrongful execution of convict Sam Shockley. Northern California may not be as well-known for its crime as Southern California, but it’s a fascinating part of the Golden State’s history all the same. Walsh took some time to answer questions about the book. VCN: Tell us how this book stands out from other books on criminal history of California/Northern California? Walsh: A lot of books focus on well-known cases already Valley Community Newspapers, Inc.
VCN: Why did you choose to write this book now? Walsh: This book is the second of three. My first book covered New York, but California has so rich a criminal history that I split the original volume into two. The book on Southern California is in the works and will probably be out some time next year. Walsh: What do you hope readers get out of it? VCN: I’d hope readers get something a little different than the usual fare. It would be nice to know I had sparked their interest in the more unusual California crimes and in history generally. Some of the cases caused lasting change in California, but remain almost forgotten. VCN: Tell us about your love of history, particularly criminal history. Tell us more (than what is on the book cover) about growing up in Dartmoor? What did you like about it? Tell us about your first memories of the famous prison there. Walsh: Dartmoor is a beautiful place to live. held Americans captured during the War of 1812, is part of that. My first memory of the prison is a convict escaping. Back then locals often locked their doors and windows, refusing to answer the door unless they already knew who was there. VCN: Where do you live now? Walsh: I left Dartmoor some time ago, although I still visit occasionally. I now live in Truro, Cornwall. VCN: Is there anything else you’d like to add? Walsh: History is a fascinating subject, but don’t be afraid to look outside the obvious. Sometimes you find the most interesting stories by chance while you’re looking for something else. So, good hunting and don’t be afraid to get side-tracked.

The Case for Adopting Senior Dogs
When considering adopting a dog into your family, many people often think that a cuddly, energetic puppy is the most appealing choice. Though puppies are fun and undeniably cute, the cuteness doesn’t come without a lot of work. There is a definite case to be made for senior dogs. These elder pups often get overlooked at the shelters. But they need good homes, too – even more so than the younger pups. Shelters usually have a larger senior pet population and by adopting one, you are truly saving and changing a life. Valley Community Newspapers, Inc.
Some of these older dogs have been cast aside for unfortunate reasons by their families - maybe even simply because they just aren’t as peppy as they used to be. Imagine the sense of betrayal a dog might feel! One would think that this would harden a dog’s demeanor and they would never love again. On the contrary, most dogs are even more eager to love and are willing to open up their doggy hearts to another family. The following are a few points to keep in mind when you are making the choice to add to your family:
1. As prospective pet parents, you might think that seven dog years equals one human year but dogs age differently based on their breed. The larger breed dogs tend to age more quickly than smaller breed dogs. Giant and large breeds are considered to be seniors when they reach around six or seven years-old while medium breeds are considered to be seniors closer to eight or nine years old. Smaller breeds are seniors when they reach about ten to 12 years of age. 2. With good nutrition, proper exercise and veterinary care, your senior pups will live a great life as your companion and family member. Keep in mind that although senior dogs have established personalities and most often are house and obedience trained, old dogs certainly can learn new tricks! 3. As previously mentioned, there is no doubt that puppies are cute. However, remember the time it takes to potty train them. If you are mature, yourself, and don’t have the patience for crate-training and pee pads, an older dog is best for you. They have been in homes before and, for the
most part, are crate trained and know that the potty is outside. 4. If you are looking to adopt a “furever” friend who understands what it’s like to be a member of a family “pack” and will learn quickly what is expected of them in their new home, a senior dog may be the best choice for you. Many of these older dogs are not in shelters for behavioral problems. They lived with, and were loved by, a pet parent who passed away and these grieving pups by no fault of their own were placed in a shelter.
Contact your local shelter and/or rescue organization to see if they have a senior dog that will be best suited for your family’s lifestyle. A senior dog offers a lifetime of unconditional love to share with you and your family. For over fifteen years, Susan Marie has been spreading the word about puppy love through her national weekly radio show, The Doggy Diva Show. Susan is also the author of the award-winning Miss Olive children’s book trilogy The Doggy Diva Diaries.

NeighborWoods in Arden Arcade and the Wishing Trees Sacramento has one of the largest hand planted tree canopies in the world thanks to the passion and commitment of the people who live here. Since 1982, the Sacramento Tree Foundation has been building partnerships and empowering communities to envision the best places to live and invest in their urban forest because trees offer so many amazing benefits and are central to a healthy neighborhood. Trees and green spaces can help to reduce stress, improve respiratory health, and even reduce crime! Neighborhoods and schools with more trees report an increase in physical activity, neighborhood cohesion, and test scores. Businesses that operate under a lush canopy enjoy higher consumer traffic. Not to mention the energy savings, reduced cooling costs, and
increased property values that come from having the right tree in the right place. While some neighborhoods have an abundance of trees not everyone in Sacramento County lives in their shade. Some neighborhoods with less trees experience higher temperatures, higher levels of pollution, and experience higher exposure to other risk factors. This is where the Sacramento Tree Foundations’ NeighborWoods Initiative comes in. Operating on the tenets of community leadership and environmental justice, the NeighborWoods program strives to work with community members to provide trees along with the education and advocacy that ensures their survival for generations to come. Arden Arcade is a community that is not receiving the full benefits of a robust
tree canopy. Due to this, Sacramento Tree Foundation NeighborWoods organizers have been working with residents in Arden Arcade to identify their visions for planting and tree care. Together we have completed projects at parks, in neighborhoods, at schools and other locations identified as in need by the community such as parking lots and churches. This fall we are working at Howe Community Park, adding new shade trees and caring for mature trees. We are partnering with Howe Elementary, Fulton El Camino Parks and Recreation District, SMUD, the County of Sacramento and community members to submit your wishes to be planted with the new shade trees for our virtual event The Wishing Trees at Howe Community Park. Sub-
mit your wishes to tami@ sactree.com by November 14th to have your wishes planted and watch them grow! Follow The Sacramento Tree Foundation @ sactree on Facebook to tune in to this event on Facebook Live and hear some of your wishes read before they are planted. This beautiful park is also home to some very special memorial trees, a wide variety of tree species and will soon be welcoming the newly planted Wishing Trees. We will also be featuring a virtual self-guided walking tour highlighting some of these beautiful trees at the park which will be available on our website sactree.com November 14th so you can come check out the new Wishing Trees and check out some of the other superstar trees at this awesome park. If you are interested in supporting
and growing the canopy in Howe Community Park or planting trees at your own house or neighborhood in Arden Arcade, contact us on Facebook or Instagram @sactree, check out our website sactree.com/arden-arcade, or email tami@ sactree.com. For free shade trees at your home, check out our Sac Shade Program at sactree.com/shadetrees.
