Carmichael Park bocce ball courts open to the public By LANCE ARMSTRONG

Editor’s note: This is part one of a two-part series on the new bocce ball courts at Carmichael Park. The Carmichael Recreation and Park District recently opened two bocce ball courts in Carmichael Park, adjacent to the property of the Italian Center. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the district has not yet scheduled a grand opening for the courts, but the courts are currently available for public use. Mike Blondino. superintendent of the park district, told the Arden-Carmichael News that there is a lot of excitement pertaining to the new courts. “People are excited to be in parks, but people are even more excited that this is a new amenity in Carmichael,” he said. Bocce, which is the second most popular sport in Italy after soccer, was popularized in Italy and brought to the United States during the turn of the 20th century. The sport has been played in the Sacramento area since at least the 1930s. The game is generally played in groups of two or four and is most closely related to lawn bowling. Typically, a game consists of two players per team. Although the park’s master plan includes plans for four courts, an effort to have the oth-

er two courts built is an ongoing project which is not yet funded. The cost of the initial two, 10-foot by 160-foot courts was more than $161,000, with $103,000 coming from the park district. The remaining $58,000 was contributed by the Carmichael Parks Foundation. Blondino mentioned that the foundation’s contribu-

tion included funding from the family of former Carmichael resident Shirley Simi, a past Italian Cultural Society of Sacramento member who died in 2018 and was a strong supporter of the project. “(Shirley) just loved the game and you could just tell that (her daughter), Teri (O’Sullivan), was going to make this happen through her and her brother (Todd Pennington, and their Shirley Simi Memorial Fund),” he said. significance of Shirley’s work with this project. “Shirley Simi, who was the society volunteer director and also worked on our special events, was really the driving force behind the courts,” he said. “So, what happened was when Shirley passed away, she left ($5,000) for starting the court process. So, it was a start and then her family got involved in support.” Cerruti also credited the Italian community, in general, for coming forth with fundraising to have the courts constructed.

“We had the Italian Cultural Society and the Italian Center right there supporting the courts with fundraising,” he said. We had the Carmichael Italian American community in doing that.” With the initial two courts finally completed, Cerruti referred to them as a “big deal.” “It is a big deal for us, especially with the events of the past year,” he said. “To be able to construct the bocce courts during the COVID(-19) crisis was a big deal. And so, it’s very inspiring for our community to have a project like this, especially ones that reflects our traditions.” Cerruti added that the completion of these courts is additionally special, considering the society’s longtime goal of having them constructed. “We’ve been wanting to do this ever since we built the (Italian) Center in 2007,” he said. “So, this was one of the projects that was on the list of things to accomplish.” He also stressed the importance of bocce in Italian culture. “Bocce is an Italian tradition,” Cerruti said. “It’s a favorite Italian pastime in Italy and also in Italian America. There are hundreds of bocce court complexes across the United States. And bocce is a big sport in Northern California. There are major bocce leagues in almost every major city in Northern California and major bocce court complexes.” Cerruti added that plans are underway to also bring bocce leagues to Carmichael Park. “The goal is to develop bocce leagues like they have in (East Portal Park in East Sacramento),” he said. “We have approval to expand more courts in that project (at Carmichael Park), so that we can be a part of the bocce league circuit. ce is like any other sport. They have playoffs, they have teams, they have divisionals and then they go to nationals, and they go to international competitions. And some of the best teams in the world are in Northern California.” The courts at Carmichael Park can be accessed directly from regular entries to the park and through an entryway into the park from the center. Although the courts were completed last December, a temporary fence was placed around them due to the pandemic. The fence was removed and public play began last month. The courts are currently open daily and the park district is offering lessons to those who are interested in learning how to play the game. A message at the site notes that people can use the court for one hour at a time for free play.

The Carmichael Recreation and Park District recently opened two bocce ball courts in Carmichael Park.

Plans are also being made to offer opportunities to rent the courts, beginning in April or May. Cerruti anticipates that the grand opening, whenever it is held, will be a very festive celebratory event. “(It) will be a big celebration and probably a big picnic or buffet or festival,” he said.

For more information about bocce ball and various offerings through the Italian Center, visit the website, www.ItalianCenter.net, call (916) 482-5900, or write to the email address, Italy1@surewest.net. Those who are interested in scheduling for the courts and free lessons can contact the Carmichael Recreation and Park District at (916) 485-5322.

Bill Cerruti, founder of the Italian Cultural Society of Sacramento, described how to play the game of bocce ball for those who are unfamiliar with the sport. “The way it works is usually bocce is played by at least two people,” he said. “Each person has four balls, and they have what they call a pallino, which is a little white ball they throw out first. “And they throw the (pallino) ball out and the goal is whoever can get the most balls closest to the pallino wins the game. The score is usually about 12, 15 points. So, whoever gets the first 15 points wins the game. “The first player that goes out throws a ball towards the pallino and that establishes how close they are, then the next player has four balls to get their balls closer. And then, after they get a ball closer, the next player has a chance to come back in and try to get their ball closer. So, it’s a competition.” Cerruti noted that bocce ball is basically lawn bowling. “You can do this game on a lawn,” he said. “In places where there were no bocce courts, instead of bocce balls, people would just get 10 baseballs and a golf ball, and throw them out on the grass and play the sport that way.”

Two Sacramentans honored with Women in American History Award The Sacramento Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR), has recognized two Sacramento women with the society’s prestigious Women in American History Award. The awardees, Daisy Mah and the late former mayor of Sacramento Belle Cooledge, are innovators who have made a difference in their community. Daisy Mah, an extraordinary Sacramento gardener, has carried out a 25year campaign to beautify Sacramento parks in conjunction with the team of volunteers she organized. She transformed the WPA Rock Garden, established the sacred lotus garden in the Duck Pond, and renovated the island in the Anne Rudin Peace Pond, all in William Land Park. She also established gardens in Sacramento’s Midtown, McKinley Park, and in the Delta community of Locke. In 1988, Mah established the Perennial Plant Club in Sacramento. Belle Cooledge, Sacramento’s first woman mayor (1948-1949), founded Sacramento City College in 1916 where she also served as Vice President and the Dean of Women Students. In
