Being, as I am, partial to Northern California, I view SoCal as a bunch of water thieves. They’ve got all that ocean to desalinate. Why must they appropriate our reservoirs and rivers? It’s been reported that during last year’s drought, Beverly Hills, with its expansive lawns, watered with abandon. To the downstate’s credit, I have to say those SoCal folks have pumped a lot of money into a wildlife-friendly project that I just love. Were we to get such a project across I-80, it’s likely there would be a lot less roadkill when the Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area floods. Twice I’ve seen a dead deer by a road. The first, next to Old River Road, the next by an exit ramp from I-5. Both when the wildlife area was under water. Near LA,‘the 101’ – notorious for bumper to bumper traffic – will soon be the first major freeway in California to get a wildlife bridge. There’s a small one somewhere in our state. We have wildlife tunnels, it’s reported. But ‘til now, no carefully planned huge crossing designed solely to protect endangered wildlife (by cutting down collisions). I was riding with someone once who hit a deer. His van had

some front end damage and, as I recall, got a realignment. Reflexively, the doe bounded away on three legs, then dropped and died. We both felt terrible I’ve never seen a dead mountain lion .. yet. Some years back, tracks and scat confirmed a Southport sighting near the Nugget. I swear I saw tracks over in what used to be West Sac’s golf course. I was told, I likely did, because wildlife ‘follows the river.’ When I walked my dog over there, I purposely looked up in trees. ‘Bridge’, ‘Crossing’, whatever you want to call these manmade wildlife corridors, they’re saving lives of not just animals … but also, sometimes, drivers. California mountain lions, afraid to risk traffic on the 101 to find an unrelated mate, have prompted what Caltrans says “will be the largest wildlife crossing in the world.” Federal and state biologists explain that the mountain lions “need to regularly connect with other populations to increase their diversity.” Two+ years ago, the National Park Service, UC Davis, and UCLA collaborated on a study. Due to ‘isolation’ in the Santa Monica Mountains, these cats are at risk of “imminent genetic

collapse,” say experts, adding that, without diversity, SoCal’s mountain lions could be extinct in 15 years or less. The $87-million wildlife crossing will boast native plants and other features the cats and other wildlife should find appealing. Construction will take place at night (to aggravate fewer drivers). Barring delays (such as, say, an earthquake), as of 2023, SoCal’s Liberty Canyon cats should be going back and forth across the 101 to mix and mingle, their pre-101 ‘corridor’ restored. Wildlife, everywhere, has suffered from invasion of its habitat. Caltrans reportedly hopes this first large crossing will inspire more such crossings statewide. Nature matters. Maybe big NorCal money will partner with California Fish&Wildlife and UCD to do something nice for ours. In collaboration with the U.S. Geological Survey and the Road Ecology department at UC Davis, Caltrans has published a ‘wildlife crossings’ manual. The guide, said UCD, is designed to help Caltrans comply with regulations, state and federal, while it protects the state’s threatened or endangered animals, plants and habitats. To see various types of wildlife crossings, search or click wildlife bridges over highways. To read more about threats to California wildlife, go to https://calmatters.org/politics/2021/07/california-wildlife-crossings/?mc_ cid=706ab588b8&mc_ eid=5485ea8320. Questions, comments? Concerts in the Park return to Carmichael Park Carmichael Recreation and Park District announced the return of summer Concerts in the Park! Concerts are taking place at the Daniel Bishop Memorial Pavilion (bandshell) in Carmichael Park. Concerts kicked off on Saturday, July 10 and are taking place every Saturday at 6:30 p.m. through August 28. The concerts feature Carmichael favorites such as Todd Morgan & the Emblems, On Air, Fryed Brothers and more! JULY 24: KYLE ROWLAND BLUES “Blues harmonica player of the year” and “Blues New Artist of The Year” in 2009 from the West Coast Blues Hall of Fame, Kyle Rowland, has been dominating the stage since the tender age of 10 years old. Beginning his career sitting in and receiving lessons from the hit Sacramento band, Mick Martin and the Blues Rockers, for seven consecutive years, Kyle quickly and naturally developed his own sound. With help from a few of his heroes such as James Cotton, Hubert Sumlin, Matt “Guitar” Murphy, Lazy Lester and many others, Kyle learned specific techniques of stage presence, the music business, and several highly revered harmonica secrets. At 16 years old Kyle formed his own band. Keeping the tradition alive and sticking with the roots, The Kyle Rowland Blues Band dishes out a sauté of boisterous Chicago and swampy Texas blues with a pinch of West Coast swing. Danceable and listenable, this show will have you wanting more with your toes tapping into the next morning.

JULY 31: MAYA BAND Maya, is a Latin Tribute Band, Presenting the most popular songs from wellknown artists that everybody recognizes, including Santana, Selena, Mark Anthony, Gloria Estefan, Celia Cruz, La Sonora Dinamita, Ritchie Valens and popular Latin Old School hits. Maya covers all standard Latin styles including, Cumbia, Salsa, Latin Rock, Cha Cha, and Old School. AUG. 7: FRYED BROTHERS BAND The Party Ain’t over ‘til the Fryeds go home, goes the song written by legendary local bandleader Harry Fryed. The Fryed Brothers Band performs an energetic brand of American roots music with an irresistible stew of country, blues, swing, boogie-woogie and good old roadhouse rock ’n’ roll. Valley Community Newspapers, Inc.

AUG. 14: TODD MORGAN & THE EMBLEMS Todd Morgan and his band, The Emblems, have been performing and entertaining audiences in various incarnations for over 10 years now. This current version of the group features the backing of Chris Bell on Bass and Andrew Philip on Drums. For the past five years in a row, Todd has been nominated in Sac News & Review’s Sammie Awards for Best Indie Artist, Best Rock Artist and Rest Rockabilly Artist. Todd has also won Best Song of the Year in the Westcoast Songwriters annual multi-statewide songwriting competition. In the past year, Todd Morgan & the Emblems, like so many others, took a bit of a “break” for some mysterious reason. This summer, they are extremely happy to be back, performing their original tunes, and of course, classic rock ‘n’ roll, rhythm and blues, pop and soul from the 1950s and ‘60s AUG. 21: ON AIR “Solid rock music, tight harmony, and white-hot horns characterize the On Air sound.” The band performs the best of ‘70s and ‘80s groups like Chicago, Steely Dan, Tower of Power, and the Doobie Brothers along with a mix of Motown and Stax/Volt landmark hits plus contemporary selections. AUG. 28: GREAT WIDE OPEN Great Wide Open pays tribute to Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers with the level of attention to detail that is uncommon even among tribute bands. With every performance, GWO delivers that distinctive Tom Petty sound and experience like no other. Sacramento’s Great Wide Open combined five musicians from California and across the nation to form the ultimate Tom Petty tribute band. GWO not only matches up man-for-man with Tom’s original Heartbreakers but also with Tom’s “other” band, the Traveling Wilburys! www.valcomnews.com • July 23, 2021 • Arden-Carmichael News

The Sacramento Gay Men’s Chorus is excited to welcome Christian Bohm as the new Artistic Director After more than 18 months of being shuttered by the COVID-19 pandemic, Christian Bohm will lead SGMC’s Big Comeback as we return to live rehearsals and performances with our Holiday Show in December—exactly two years since the last live concert. Christian is a musical director, pianist, and vocal coach whose three-decade career has spanned the worlds of Broadway, cabaret, and choral music. Christian spent five years as the principal accompanist and assistant conductor for the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus, where he served as a vocal coach and accompa-

nist to Alan Cumming, Rita Moreno, Sharon Gless, and many other guest artists. Christian has devoted his talents to many seasons at Sacramento’s Broadway At Music Circus as a singer/actor, rehearsal accompanist, and pit musician. This fall, he begins his 27th year as a high school music teacher, specializing in chorus and music theory. He has traveled with his choruses to Italy, Paris, Israel, London, and across the United States, winning festivals and competitions along the way. “During our extensive search process, Christian showed us that he not only possesses impressive mu-

sical skills and conducting experience but also approaches this position with a delightful demeanor and style,” said James Dahlen, SGMC President. “ The Board of Directors is absolutely thrilled he accepted the position, and we are very excited for the great things coming in our 37th Season.” Christian has a strong passion for social justice and equality but fostering the love and understanding of choral music is his main ethos and vocation in life. Christian states, “I am delighted to be at the helm of the Sacramento Gay Men’s Chorus.”
