NAIROBI: A STORY WITH A HAPPY ENDING
Until three months ago this one-year-old female was another dog that people who came across her just saw as one more disheveled almost invisible wanderer and basically chose to ignore her. Through her streets of sadness she lived a day-to-day miserable, neglected, lonely life, hungry and getting sicker almost daily and quickly losing what strengths were left and probably even the will to live much longer. One day however everything changed when a really true human being picked her up and although unable to care long term for the animal asked us if we at ARA could help. That is how on 22 April 2020 she stopped being nobody’s dog when she arrived at Cabanita and was named Nairobi. Worse than her appalling physical condition (see original photos), were her traumas and also that a state of fear had basically entered her whole being.
She was immediately quarantined, given a full veterinary examination, was monitored almost hourly, given appropriate medication, carefully fed (initially by hand) but almost best of all a soft clean bed. She turned out to be a fighter and quite quickly we saw a marked improvement in her physical condition which fortunately continued to be the case for the next few weeks. In order for her to gain confidence with human contact one of our volunteers asked to keep the dog with her in her on-site porta cabin to show the dog a better side of life. We agreed and since then we really do have a very different Nairobi. She knows her name, looks you in the eye without fear, loves to go walking, running on the beach and playing with other dogs – things unimaginable three months ago (see current photos). Nairobi was very close to death but given the right attitude, love and care miracles can happen.
Nairobi’s story had happy ending, as she was fortunate to be adopted by a family and now lives in Germany surrounded by love and affection. Like Nairobi, there are many other animals to be adopted at ARA – ARA RESCUE ALGARVE. During the month of June 19 animals were rescued in situations of risk and more than 28 animals were adopted.
