LANDSCAPE CURATIVA,

A HEALTHCARE LANDSCAPE ADAPTIVE TO THE COURSE OF ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE.

DIPLOMA PROJECT AO. UNIV. PROF. DIPL.-ING. DR. TECHN. CHRISTIAN KÜHN TECHNISCHE UNIVERSITÄT WIEN WINTER 21

In my Diploma project I have dealt with the topic of dementia in relation to architecture, with the aim of developing an architectural model that offers an adaptive healing landscape for people with Alzheimer. The thesis explored the potential of a new typology of architecture for care facilities, which is characterized by an open space organization with the greatest possible integration in spatial and social aspects. I call this healing landscape Landscape Curativa. The decision to deal with the topic of Alzheimer in the context of this thesis comes from the relation of it to my family’s environment, which at the same time has drawn my attention to the potential of new forms of architecture in Alzheimer’s care. This new widespread syndrom progresses in several phases, leading to varying degrees of cognitive and physical impairment. Therefore, there is some need for care even in the early stages of Alzheimer’s, but the intensity of that care differs markedly from later phases. At this stage, care activities can still largely be provided by family members, and so the person remains in a familiar environment. Inevitably, however, Alzheimer’s syndrom will reach the point where the individual is dependent on professional help, and this is associated with placement in a nursing facility. In this phase the person with Alzheimer’s reacts very sensitively to changes and so the transfer away from habitual home can additionally aggravate the respective

TECHNISCHE UNIVERSITÄT WIEN SUMMER 19

Organization of new spacial Possibilities The Jamsil complex in Seoul presents itself as a very introvert reality, with a parterre not only populated mostly by parked cars, but also surrounded by heavy barriers in form of high traffic streets. At 4 specific points, through direct connections, Overlay wants to break down physical and visual barriers by connecting the area with the rest of the urban space. To the north in particular, the Han river will once again be directly connected to the area, creating new possibilities of access to the banks of the river. These new connections will not be limited only to the border of the complex, but will extend inside like a membrane, connecting through a new pedestrian path the different internal areas. The volume of this new membrane, raised above the zero level of the parterre, will densify the space three-dimensionally - which will be first released from the cars, by providing alternative vertical parking rather than the current existing huge horizontal park area - creating a new atmospheric

dispersive and monotonous one of the existing raster. Creating an additional layer within this particularly verticalized area, in addition to offering, thanks to its 360° use, opportunities for new spatial reactions and shadows, allows to maintain in the current parterre, the more semi-private character of the complex, while at the same time integrating it to a public.

A period of harvesting and collecting. In ancient Roman theatres, the semi-circular shape was preferred for several reasons including visual and auditory ones, but it was as well an element that characterised the introspective and collective form of these monuments. SOUTH

A period of swelling, brimming with fire and energy translated into the summer square, where a flexible stage will bring energy and vitality to this space.

THE 5 PHASES The term Obangsaek in Korean refers to the scheme and combination of the 5 natural elements (Fire, Water, Earth, Metal, Wood) which is used to explain in different traditional Asian cultures, the variety of cosmic, medical, and natural phenomena. These 5 elements are defined as phases of a cycle, in which they interconnect and form different interactions. Each of them is characterized by the association to a cardinal orientation, a seasonal moment and with it philosophically to an experience. Given the cyclical and interconnected nature, these phases in our urban path are represented by the meeting points during the journey. In these 5 squares - phases the visitor through a metaphorical architectural translation will have the opportunity to perceive the essence of each of them. Moreover, their arrangement will respect the original cardinal structure, acting in the end also as an orientation within the path itself.

05

EAST

Spring, a period of growth, which generates abundant wood and vitality. Every year with the arrival of spring nature turns pink. The east square, in analogy to the already existing associative reality of growth and spring to the cherry tree plant, will accommodate the latter, offering in every sense Spring to visitors.

06

07

CENTRE

The in-between transitional seasonal periods, in the latter case associated with leveling and moderation The aim in the area of the earth, through a staircase developed around a circular network, is to stage the transition from the area below to that above the path.

NORTH

Winter is the period of retreat, where stillness pervades. The goal is to create a space that through small pro-aesthetic actions creates an atmosphere of quiet and contemplation. The latter will temporarily hide the outside through 2 truncated cone structures - which also support the path itself - while remaining interconnected with the outside. Inside, the visitor while lying down on the ground will be exposed through a frame to a single sublime point: the sky.

10

THE STRUCTURE At the structural level, the pedestrian membrane will be seen as a single unit: the filigree support structure will wrap around the concrete base while creating a barrier and shaded areas throughout the path. The concrete filigree skeleton of the entire volume will integrate lightly into the urban space: thanks to its structural transparency the air circulation and visual connection will be guaranteed.

URBAN LAYER,

The new Urban Layer starts in the western part of our Project area, the Hermann-Leopoldi Park, implementing a new design of the area and leading to the Steinbauer – Park. While the ground floor area profits of its new traffic-calmed zone, used by the pedestrians, bicycles and the well working bus lines, the new big open spaces on a second level can be used as a multi functional playground. On the at least 3 meters wide gangway a new type of park is created, which communicates actively with the existing buildings and their rooftops, for example with the new youth center in the old Meidlinger church. The successful concept of the Meidlinger Markt is extended throughout the whole new layer. The traffic circle in the Aßmayergasse is transformed into the Aßmayer 01_top view 02_areial overview 03_longitudinal section 04_exploded drawing 05_conceptual diagram - reuse of a sacred place

square, where permanent and temporary Market stands, consumption free areas with seating accommodation and light-fitness facilities are located on the two levels. Through adding balconies to the existing buildings on the main street and generating space for Urban Gardening, the residents benefit from the possibilities added to their current environment.

REUSE OF A SACRED PLACE. Thanks to the interviews we conduced on the site, we came to the conclusion the young population of the 12th district lacks of covered spaces that can be used at all times during the week and as well during bad weather conditions. At the same time, the Meidlinger parish church offers a great potential, mostly because of its sinking number in visitors. Following this analysis the church is used in a new manner, through the insertion of a plane for new activities without ruining the existing church service.

CASA MARITTIMA,

WHAT WOULD YOUR DREAM HOUSE LOOK LIKE?

UNIV. PROF. ARCHITEKT DI. VOLKER GIENCKE UNIVERSITÄT INNSBRUCK SUMMER 14

Casa marittima was the first project out of my confused mental bubble as a first year student, where it became clear in my mind, how fun architecture could be. On a four-week study trip to Portugal, Professor Giencke asked us the question: what would be your dream house in a world of utopia?

01_top view 02_section 03_ Floorplan A

In my childhood I have always been fascinated by supervillians mansions and their modernist, futuristic, and utopian architecture often associated with the amorality of their owner, while as well drawn to the natural world, with breathtaking views like the one I was experiencing in Portugal coast. So why not plan and design the mansion of the villains from the super hero movies. If you think about it, no one ever really talks about the studio apartment of Superman or even knows where James Bond lives, Lex Luther instead, had the sexiest architecture, with pristine, awe-inspiring, high-tech, otherworldly, big bright rooms, easy and quick connection to the most secret places and the private sphere everyone strives for. So here it is my super secret Hideout.

04_Floorplan B 05_Floorplan C 06_ ./studio 3 - institute for experimental architecture publication 07_ front view 08_physical model

It´s not as bad as Lex´s; but it strives to be as majestic as possible. As if the Atlantic is Co-starring, together with the steep and last but not least, it is the ideal location for me to enjoy a nice drink by my dream infinity pool.

TETE CENTRO LAUDATO SI

PROJECT TEAM VALENTINA LUCICH JULIAN HEINEN PASCAL FECK APRIL 2020

In February 2020, we were asked to propose a design for the new Laudato si Catholic center in Tete, Mozambique, located near the Revùboé River. Given the extreme climatic conditions and the limited budget, the design approach we used was based on the use of natural elements that would take advantage of the energy given by the direction of the winds and the nearby river. By using the constant main wind current from the southeast, the proposed building forms arise. The elongated and slightly curved structures draw the wind into the property. This ensures a natural cooling of the plant. The green areas in the center form a natural filter layer and contribute significantly to cooling. The chapel is the center of the design and stands out as an independent architecture. The internal circulation of the complex is concentrated around it. 01_view of the activated parterre 02_site plan 03_cooling concept 04_ concept diagram 05_section a 06_section b 07_ view from the dining hall 08_ view from the garden

The buildings are elevated in order to be better protected against potential flooding. At the same time they shade the planned park, which is the filter layer of the natural cooling system. We are sure that the new Laudato si Catholic Centre can be a pilot project for the integral planning of environmental influences in the design process in Mozambique and thereby significantly reduce the operating costs for air conditioning systems.
