RESUME

Valentina Lucich - Architectural Portfolio 2019

Vienna, 30.08.2019

To whom it may concern,

Valentina Lucich is known to me through her proactive participation in my design courses at TU Wien, Vienna University of Technology, and the outstanding work she produced for the contribution that our University did at the Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism 2019. Based on her outstanding talents and due to her extraordinary commitment, Valentina was able to increase her performance continuously. The main interests in her studies lie in design and especially the examination of how architectural forms can both influence and react to sociocultural phenomena while also displaying curiosity in the use of digital tools in the design process and their impact on the development of architecture in general. I would mention her extraordinary technical skills, including various CAD programs, Adobe, Rhino / Grasshopper and other medial software, as well as model-making skills. While being highly engaged with her academic work, Valentina has regularly taken the extra effort to engage with the architectural working life for example through the participation and collaboration into numerous exhibitions my office was organizing or taking part to such as OPUS ASIE in Rome 2019 and the Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism 2019. I can recommend Valentina Lucich unreservedly and with emphasis,

Yours sincerely,

At 4 specific points, through direct connections, it will be possible to break down physical and visual barriers by connecting the area with the rest of the urban space. To the north in particular, the Han river will once again be directly connected to the area, creating new possibilities of access to the banks of the river. These new connections will not be limited only to the border of the complex, but will extend inside like a membrane, connecting through a new pedestrian path the different internal areas. The volume of this new membrane, raised above the zero level of the parterre, will densify the space three-dimensionally - which will be first released from the cars, by providing alternative vertical parking rather than the current existing huge horizontal park area - creating a new atmospheric impression of public and semi-public space through a form opposed to the regular, dispersive and monotonous one of the existing raster. Creating an additional layer within this particularly verticalized area, in addition to offering, thanks to its 360° use, opportunities for new spatial reactions and shadows, allows to maintain in the current parterre, the more semi-private character of the complex, while at the same time integrating it to a public.. For the purpose of orientation and atmospheric development, inspired by the 5 natural elements of the Obangsaek, within this new path, similarly to the principles of the latter, there will be integrated 5 phases / squares in which in each of them through a spatial and architectural language will be proposed activities or installations that will translate the very essence of each element in an identifying atmospheric experience. This extension of the public space will offer not only an excursion into the green with shaded areas for the hottest periods, but also new attractive and integrative opportunities for people living in the area of the complex, and for those coming from outside. A new urban cultural walk through the "forest of high-rise buildings" at Jamsil 5 breaks down barriers by connecting the city with the outside environment and opens up towards the riverfront.

The five phases. The term Obangsaek in Korean refers to the scheme and combination of the 5 natural elements (Fire, Water, Earth, Metal, Wood) which is used to explain in different traditional Asian cultures, the variety of cosmic, medical, and natural phenomena. These 5 elements are defined as phases of a cycle, in which they interconnect and form different interactions. Each of them is characterized by the association to a cardinal orientation, a seasonal moment and with it philosophically to an experience. Given the cyclical and interconnected nature, these phases in our urban path are represented by the meeting points during the journey. In these 5 squares - phases the visitor through a metaphorical architectural translation will have the opportunity to perceive the essence of each of them. Moreover, their

14

arrangement will respect the original cardinal structure, acting in the end also as an orientation within the

South A period of swelling, brimming with fire and energy. During the summer, the city of Seoul is filled with energy: in the evening many people go out to visit some food festival or to have fun to the rhythm of outdoor music. Warm, smells, flavours, energy, music, all elements that in a period find a synergy and remain imprinted in the memory of each one.

15

The Summer Square, unlike others, wants to offer a flexible space, where every year can be welcomed through new arrangements, small musical r e a l i t i e s to g e t h e r o r f i l m , a cco m p a n i e d by fo o d a n d entertainment which will bring energy and vitality to this space. A flexible stage and infrastructure for temporary stalls will be offered.

East Period of growth, which generates abundant wood and vitality Every year with the arrival of spring from the parks of Seoul to the Korean countryside, nature turns pink. The blossoming of the cherry trees is a significant event for the country, which in addition to the beauty of its floating petals represents emotionally growing vitality.

16

The spring square, in analogy to the already existing associative reality of growth and spring to the cherry tree plant, will accommodate the latter, offering in every sense Spring to visitors.

Centre the in-between t ra n s i t i o n a l s e a s o n a l periods, in the latter case associated with leveling and moderation Vienna is a city that, although it tends to be flat, has several areas in which there are marked differences in level between an upper and a lower road. The stairs and passages that connect these points, such as the "Fillgraderstiege" or the "Strudlhofstiege", have become an identifying element of the city both for their shape and for their historical importance. These staircases are characterized by the way in which, through the alternation of regular rhythms, zones of rest and structural prominence, they further stage the transition between the two levels.

17

The objective in the area of the earth, through a staircase developed around a cellular network, is to stage the transition from the area below to that above our path. Raises of 15 cm will ensure a slow pace in the climb, while the central rest area as well as further accentuate the climb will offer a shaded area under the structure where you can sit up from the parterre.

West A period of harvesting and collecting In ancient Greek and Roman theatres, the circular or semi-circular shape was a fundamental characteristic. This arrangement was preferred for several reasons including visual and auditory, but it was also an element that characterised the introspective and collective form of these monuments.

18

The autumn square, through an amphitheatre, metaphorically wants to represent the sense of collection and harvesting of the season itself. Its circular and introspective form leads the spectators to be in close visual contact with each other, best representing the sense of the whole, while at the same time, because of its vertical development provides access to the upper area.

OVERLAY

North Period of retreat, where stillness pervades Romantic artists during the 11Th century used the epic of nature as an expression of the sublime. The greatness of nature, of this unteachable sublime element, induce emotion of peace and stillness.

19

Inspired by the rhetoric of Romanticism, the goal is to create a space that through small pro-aesthetic actions allows us to create an atmosphere of quiet and contemplation. The latter will temporarily hide the outside t h ro u g h 2 t r u n c a te d co n e structures - which also support the path itself - while remaining interconnected with the outside. Inside, the visitor while lying down on the ground will be exposed through a frame to a single sublime point: the sky.

Valentina Lucich - Architectural Portfolio 2019

The Structure At the structural level, the pedestrian membrane will be seen as a single unit: the filigree support structure will wrap around the concrete base while creating a barrier and shaded areas throughout the path. The concrete filigree skeleton of the entire volume will integrate lightly into the urban space: thanks to its structural transparency the air circulation and visual connection will be guaranteed.

Urban Layer, a multifuncional new layer. Studio Leader David Calas Students Valentina Lucich, Architecture Kostantin Viehweider, Urban Planning 2018 Location Meidling, Vienna

24

The new URBAN LAYER starts in the western part of our Project area, the Hermann-Leopoldi Park, implementing a new design of the area and leading to the Steinbauer – Park. While the ground floor area profits of its new traffic-calmed zone, used by the pedestrians, bicycles and the well working bus lines, the new big open spaces on a second level can be used in a multifunctional way. On the at least 3 meters wide gangway a new type of park is created, which communicates actively with the existing buildings and their rooftops, for example with the new youth- centre in the old Meidlinger church. The successful concept of the MEIDLINGER MARKT is extended throughout the whole layer. The traffic circle in the Aßmayergasse is transformed into the Aßmayer square, where permanent and temporary Matket stands, consumption free areas with seating accomodation and light-fitness facilities are located on the two levels. Through adding balconies to the existing buildings on the main street and generating space for Urban Gardening, the residents benefit from the possibilities added to their current environment.

Reuse of a sacred place.

30

Thanks to the interviews we conduced on thesite, we came to the conclusion the young population of the 12th district lacks of covered spaces that can be used at all times during the week and aswell during bad weather conditions. At the same time, the Meidlinger parish church offers a great potential, mostly because of its sinking number in visitors. Following this analysis the church is used in a new manner, through the insertion of a plane for new activities without ruining the exsisting church service.

Casa Marittima, what would your dream house look like? Studio Leader Volker Giencke Students Valentina Lucich 2014 Location Praia da Falesia, Albufeira, Portugal One of my childhood dreams has always been to plan and design the mansion of the villains from the super hero movies. If you think about it, no one ever really talks about the studio apartment of Superman or James Bond, Lex Luther instead, had the architectural touch everyone needs, like big bright rooms, easy and quick connection to the most secret places and the private sphere everyone strives for. So here it is my super secret Hideout. It´s not as bad as lex´s; but it strives to be as majestic as possible. It were as if the Atlantic is Co-starring. together with the steep and last but not least, is the idea location for me to enjoy a nice drink by
