HIGH PERFORMANCE TENNIS ACADEMY & LEARNING CENTER
Project type: Sports Client: John McEnroe Academy Location: Laguna Beach, CA Area: 38,700 Sq. ft.
The John McEnroe High Performance Tennis Academy and Learning Center is a one- of-a-kind, world-class facility. Situated in Laguna Beach California, the center boasts a wide array of resources and amenities, such as meditation rooms, fitness and physical therapy departments, hard and clay courts, an academics center, a cafĂŠ, and a social/lounge area. This is special in that it offers each player an extremely well-rounded environment and culture in which they can develop and flourish both as an athlete and as a person. Concept: Construct a space that reflects the complexity, power and speed of tennis. The main idea begins with creating two separate structures inside the building, each representing the serve. Between these structures sits an atrium which creates the effect of being outdoors. Then, by using sharpangled shapes that cut through the curves, and designing intersecting and overlapping spaces, not just in floor plan, but in section as well, the power and movement of the game will be emphasized. The combination of diverse skills and mental states of the player would be represented by creating different purpose rooms with various mass volumes.

SITE & DESIGN PROCESS San Francisco
Los Angeles
San Diego
Choosing the correct location for the club was essential for the project. Laguna beach, CA is conveniently located between Los Angeles and San Diego and allows for an easy commute, whether driving or flying . It is just 2 miles away from the highway and is within walking distance of the beach, shops and restaurants. With a consistently warm and dry climate, this location makes for an excellent tennis environment. The club is designed in an environmentfriendly fashion. It has underground water collection systems for court irrigation and solar panels for outdoor lightning. The placement of the tennis courts chosen by analyzing sun and wind movement at different hours of the day.

The design process concentrated particularly on analyzing a tennis ball’s movement during a full match. Tracking its trajectory and mapping it on the court allowed me to create diagrams which show (1) the most usable space, (2) curves and angles in the plan and side view, and (3) the motion, rotation, and movement of the players body while serving.

entrance
The project program was designed by separating two main structures inside the building, each with a different purpose. The left being the private/service area, the right being the semi-public area, and dividing them is the open, public space. The first floor of the club is for the public and players. Here you will find the main entrance, atrium, lounge, cafe, screening room, game room, and pro shop. The entrance is located at the start of a tapering corridor that pierces through the building, creating a feeling of acceleration and movement. At the same time, the atrium creates a feeling of being outdoors by using street lights and furniture, as well as a large amount of windows and skylights to bring lots of sun light.

NEW LIFE BIRTH CENTER
Project type: Healthcare Client: New York Midwifery Assosiation Location: New York City, NY Area: 14,900 Sq. ft.
New Life Birth Center, like nurse-midwifery, is an innovation in the delivery of care to healthy, childbearing women and families. It is a home-like facility which offers a program of care designed in the wellness model of pregnancy and birth. • New Life Birth Center is guided by principles of prevention, sensitivity, safety, appropriate medical intervention, and cost effectiveness. • New Life Birth Center provides family-centered care for healthy women before, during, and after normal pregnancy, labor and birth. The challenge for this project was to design a birthing center that offers as natural an experience as possible. The primary goal being to combine all the best elements of hotels, spas, and hospitals by incorporating luxurious finishes, a relaxing atmosphere, and well hidden medical equipment. A second, yet equally important goal was the introduction of natural forms, plants, materials and water features throughout the hospital. The program for New Life Birth Center incorporates spaces for educational classes, routine examination rooms, as well as administrative and birthing departments.

SITE & DRAWINGS MANHATTAN Financial District
17 Battery Place, NY The Whitehall Building was designed by architect Henry J. Hardenbergh and completed in 1904 Located in the Financial District of Manhattan.
One of the most important factors for the location of the Birth Center is Accessibility: • The Birth Center located is only 5 minutes away from the closest hospital in case of an emergency. • Over 5 bus routes surround the Birth Center • 4 Ferries and water taxi stations are located in close proximity • Walking distance to a wide range of amenities
Why do we need Birth Centers? • The cesarean section rate for women receiving care in Birth Centers averages 4.4%, whereas in hospitals in New York State the average is over 25%. • US maternal mortality rate has doubled in the past 25 years. The U.S. ranks 50th in the world for maternal mortality. Maternal mortality ratios have increased from 6.6 deaths per 100,000 live births in 1987 to 13.3 deaths per 100,000 live births in 2006 Birth centers nationally have consistently displayed charges for care for normal birth that average up to 50% less than regular hospital stays and 30% less than short stays - including practitioner fees.

CLOSE UP MAGAZINE OFFICE
Project type: Workplace Client: Close Up Magazine Location: New York City, NY Area: 24,858 Sq. ft.
Close Up Magazine is non profit organization that connects the photo community and its audience by utilizing the sharpest and most provocative photographs in an effort to raise awareness of critical social and environmental issues, and to drive social change around the world. Their target audience are photographers and photography lovers, who are seeking ways to effect social change and get inspiration for their work. The challenge for this project was to express the company’s unique profile by designing an environment that motivates and inspires its employees. Incorporated into the design were a wide range of spaces for open and closed collaborative work, small and large meeting rooms, private rooms, digital testing rooms and a number of casual spaces like lounges, a cafe, and quite rooms. The design for this project was inspired by “Moving Walls”, a concept of breaking cultural barriers. The main idea was to create a space that would provoke a feeling of freedom and empowerment. To do this "The Cage" was designed at the center of the office space. This prison-like structure represents all the barriers the company tries to break through in their work. In the middle of the cage sits a staircase which winds its way up through a crumbling ceiling, and exists to offer the feeling of hope. Hard, cold, white, and shiny materials used inside “The Cage” create a feeling of rigidity. Once outside the cage a progressive feeling of warmth is experience through texture and color.

SECTION & RENDERINGS
Photography plays a crucial part in the magazines office design. The storytelling starts from the second you enter the elevator lobby and are introduced to some of Close Up’s best works. They are displayed on the wall and ceiling through LED panels.
Inside "The Cage" materials used are hard and sleek, white in color, like tile, faux leather, glass and plastic. Outside "The Cage" materials gradually progress to more organic, textural and colorfull, like wood, carpet, and felt upholstery.

TOMS SHOE FACTORY
Project type: Retail Client: Toms shoe store Location: New York City, NY Area: 1,590 Sq. ft.
TOMS shoe company is one of the leading retail for-profit companies in the U.S. Founded in 2006 by Blake Mycoskie, it lives by a simple concept, "For every pair of shoes it sells, TOMS gives away a second pair to a person in need". As a result, it became one of the most popular shoe stores worldwide. The challenge for this project was to reflect the brand identity of Toms and to create different types of retail stores that would attract more clients and promote the philanthropic side of the brand. The concept for this project was to create a fully interactive store, where every buyer could leave their personal touch on donated shoes. The interior of the store is designed as an old factory building by using rustic, natural and recycled materials throughout the space. The main feature is a conveyer belt which runs around the store and displays all the customized and donated shoes. To emphasize the social and philanthropic aspect there is a work station where every buyer can participate in decorating donated shoes .

LOFT APARTMENT
Project type: Residential Client: Johnsenn Family Location: New York City, NY Area: 7,230 Sq. ft.
This residential project was designed for an art loving family of five who were looking for a full time living space to display their extensive art collection and unique collection of wine, as well as just a place for them to relax in a family friendly atmosphere. The space is also supposed to accommodate larger guest receptions, a separate space for a piano lessons, and to be ADA accessible. The concept for this project was inspired by incorporating the qualities of two works of art acquired by the family. The concepts of linearity and sequence are interpreted in a strong angular layout of the floor plan with spaces placed as a set of blocks in order. Some qualities from the painting could be also seen in the design. A mysterious feel spawned the idea for secret spaces such as the private art gallery, the cigar room, and burrows for kids to play in. An open floor plan creates great possibilities for larger parties and art exhibitions, while the combination of hard and soft finishes (like concrete, steel and glass) along with the warmth of the wood and textured textiles creates a relaxing atmosphere.
