1. Bamboo residence

Competition: Affordable Housing Design Challenge 2018 Team Members: Sherry Goh, Sein Yin Mar, Chan Myae, Sophia Foo

location: Phnom Penh, Cambodia

The exponential development of Cambodia can be attributed to booming industrial economy, especially in manufacturing. The Phnom Penh Special Economic Zone attracts thousands of workers from the rural villages to take on advantageous work in the city. The influx of workers however causes a shortage in quality and affordable housing. The goal of Bamboo Residence is to provide the required residential units while increasing the standard of living by developing the public amenities serving the community. The project began with an indepth analysis of the given survey results of workers in Phnom Penh. With a large majority of workers being female, there is an emphasis on safety and security. With a requirement of 3000 units, each apartment is designed at 25 square meter for 4 residents. The annual monsoon flooding of the Prek Tnout River was taken heavily into consideration which guided the design of the building and masterplanning.

Based on the demography of the workers, the units are designed to be sold to a family of four, or rented as a shared living space for individuals. Even though each unit is only 25 square meters, it consists of a living room, kitchen, bathroom and two bedrooms. Level Layout

Unit Stagger

By staggering the units, it allows for better cross ventilation throughout the level and unit. The void deck serves as a community space and also as a flood-damage mitigation measure. The buildings are constructed with reinforced concrete slabs and columns, covered with processed bamboo walls. The bamboo facade acts as a sunshade and also angled to prevent rain from entering the apartment.

Group Project: Sugar Rocket Team Members: John, Joe, David

The aim of the project was to launch an ethanol powered cable guided rocket to a given distance. The calculation was based on Newton’s second law, force equals mass multiplied by acceleration. Using kinematics, we can derive the distance travelled with acceleration, and to find acceleration we would have to account for all the forces acting on the rocket. To simplify the calculation, the rocket was designed to be as streamline as possible to make air resistance negligible. A plastic bottle is used as the body of the rocket. The geometry of the bottle induces air resistance, which complicates the calculation for acceleration. The plastic bottle is modified until it is streamline, which allows for simple calculations to be done.

3. Introduction to design Group Project: Hungry Games Team Members: Yu Fan, Nasrin, John, Rebekah

The course aims to introduce design through a series of assignments: Observation, Define, Develop and Deliver. Through our study of the Bauhause lamp, we brought our focus towards how people interact within a dull environment. After further exploration, we defined our problem to be how a ‘dull’ environment affects parent and child interactions. With the problem statement defined, we developed and prototyped our solutions. Utilising participant observation and thick description, we were able to obtain useful information to improve our product. Through cycles of iterations, we created a new dining experience to motivate interactions between parent and child.

It all started with a lamp

Proxemics was used to study how the space between people can affect the level of interaction. The analysis gave us a clue to how we could motivate people to interact with each other.

The proposed solution was a set of dinnerware which enhances the dining experience. Hungry Games is designed to engage both parent and child throughout the process of waiting, ordering and eating. The set of products consists of a central system to scan the orders. a tic tac toe board which is also used to order food, menu to keep the playing chips while being the game connect-4 and lastly the colourful tangram plates.

Social Science:

To understand the behaviour of the users with our products, we invited a family to test our prototypes during dinner. Using Goffman’s dramaturgical approach, we were able to give meaning to certain behaviours the users exhibit, which is used to improve the user experience when using Hungry Games.

Physics:

Increased durability of the plate as phones will be constantly inserted in and out. Paper has a high dielectric constant and is cost effective. Cardboard is compressible, which allows the weight of the phone to sink and drastically increase the capacitance.

To ensure the pressure plate works for different types of phones, the capicitance induced due to change in distance between the diaelectric material must be able to work for a range of different phone weights. The pressure plate is connected to an arduino uno which senses the change in capacitance, thus switching on the scanning machine if the phone is deposited.
