SWEET DESERT
INSTRUCTOR KEVIN WALZ CONTAINER DESIGN
PROJECT BRIEF The aim of this project is to create an interior environment to capture the essence of seclusion using the ready-made containers, which will help the clients to temporarily relocate away from the cityscape and connect with their deeper selves by spending time in these vacation homes. DESIGN STRATEGY This container house allows one to be secluded with their closest family members and friends, but at the same time be far away from the repetitive life in the city. The location of the house could be on a mountain or a cliff to provide a sense of “seclusion. DIGITAL TOOLS Floor plans and elevations developed with AutoCAD, Rhinoceros, Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop Renderings developed with Rhinoceros, KeyShot and Photoshop

Since the container house provides an isolated space for around six people, I intentionally created this bar area to set a second layer of seclusion. Sitting on the bar chairs, clients are free to appreciate the landscape through the long row of windows, take a break in their own minds and enjoy the moment of “seclusion and peace. FOREST ZEN
INSTRUCTOR KEVIN WALZ CONTAINER DESIGN
PROJECT BRIEF In this series of container houses, I have created three interior environments to capture the essence of seclusion, which will help the client temporarily apart from the cityscape and excavate their deeper selves spending time in these vacation homes. DESIGN STRATEGY The Container House #2 is named Forest of Zen, which suggests that it is to be located in a natural green environment. The combination of materials with different levels of transparency will create multiple experience; for example, the lifted floor from the ground will give one the sense of living in a tree house. INSTRUCTOR ROBERT GARNEAU OFFICE DESIGN
PROJECT BRIEF This project is about renovating a single-story workspace (approximately 9,500 SF) in the landmark Pepsi-Cola building located at 500 Park Avenue, in Manhattan, for the offices of the United Nations Division for Inclusive Social Development. DESIGN STRATEGY A series of curvilinear partitions at the heart of the building descend from the ceiling to provide localized enclosures where needed and create a fluid workspace. These enclosed volumes clad in wood veneer are in contrast to the open workstations around the rectilinear glass facade. INSTRUCTOR ROBERT GARNEAU HOSTEL DESIGN
PROJECT BRIEF The hostel is located in a historic building designed by Hassan Fathy in Egypt. The goal is to navigate the desert environment and create a self-sufficient interior architecture system. DESIGN STRATEGY The design mitigates the harsh desert environment by introducing solar energy and ecological machines. It begins as a rectilinear framework and transitions into curvilinear shapes in response to human comfort. DIGITAL TOOLS Floor plans and elevations developed with AutoCAD, Rhinoceros, Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop Renderings developed with Rhinoceros, KeyShot and Photoshop 3D print file making with SolidWorks and Adobe Illustrator GROUP MEMBERS Ningxin Zhang, Qinyi Wu, ShenyiI Zhang, Naishi Shah, Shelby Bourke

The design intention is to utilize the space to convey a sense of synergistic effect. These concept drawings demonstrate the possibility of the space accommodating a variety of pipes. The central oculus allows renewed water to function as a natural cooling system.

ANTIQUITY NOUVEAU
INSTRUCTOR ROBERT NASSAR RESIDENTIAL DESIGN
PROJECT BRIEF This project aims at providing a three-story residential space for a Japanese family who possesses a strong interest in Islamic culture and have just moved their house to New York. DESIGN STRATEGY In order to combine traditional Japanese style interior and Islamic architectural elements, the house conveys a sense of holiness with conventional wood materials and the classic Turkish color, Turquoise. The central Dining Pavilion functions not only as an eating area but also conveys the delicacy of Islamic art. THROUGH WONDERLAND
INSTRUCTOR ROBERT NASSAR LIBRARY DESIGN
PROJECT BRIEF This project is a library designed for both teenagers and children, which creates a dynamic immersive experience of walking through a wonderland of books. DESIGN STRATEGY The center of the carpet is inflated to form a landscape, which is the key concept of the forced perspective space. The carpet is gradually transformed into small units which function as butt support, as well as metamorphic chairs. SKILLS WALL PAINTING RESTORATION / DRAWINGS / PAINTINGS / RENDERING / MODEL MAKING BRIEF Besides interior design skills, I have studied Chemistry of Artists’ Materials for three semesters. This has endowed me with techniques of pigment making, wall painting, illuminated manuscripts, mosaics & X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF). Participated in the 2017 Pratt in Venice Program, I studied Oil Painting and Printmaking.

The Original Section
The Process before Applying Secco
Technique · Base layer - true fresco · Mezzo fresco (slaked lime after the fresco carbonates) · Slaked lime + egg --- soap binder · Secco on top · Pigments: Egyptian Blue: CaCuSi4O10 Green Earth: K[(Al,Fe-iii),(Fe-ii,Mg](AlSi3,Si4)O10(OH)2 Yellow Ochre: FeO(OH)) Red Ochre: Fe2O3 Lime: CaCO3 + Ca(OH)2 Vine Black: C Madder Lake: C14H8O4, C14H8O5 Observations After applying the first layer of true fresco, the composition turned paler. This changed the color scheme dramatically. To retrieve the accuracy of the original painting, the secco was applied for color correction. Mezzo fresco resulted in delicate and neat highlights. In terms of the color correction, the entire painting appears much more saturated than the original in the Metropolitan Museum. For instance, the lake appears brighter.
