I am Jiang Ji Li I am a hard worker, i am smart. I wonder what my life would be like if i was not part of a black family. I hear my father crying. I see my father in detention. I want to be in a family with good class status. I am a hard worker, i am smart. I pretend that i am in the good status I feel confused all the time. I touch my father again. I worry that my family will get in trouble. I cry because of the da zi bao. I am a hard worker, i am smart. I understand that i will never be in the good status. I say i hate my grandfather. I dream my grandfather was never a landlord. I try to be strong for my family. I hope my mom will get better soon. I am a hard worker, i am smart.

It is 1966
The revolution is changing everything and it is getting stricter by the second! I am very sad and worried about how my grandchildren are doing because i already sense to feel change in Ji Li’s reaction towards the revolution. She is getting excited about destroying the four olds and she does not see how bad this id really getting. Just a couple of days ago i had to stop her and Jiyong from going to watch a poor old man’s store being broken down.. I am very sad with this revolution and i hope it ends soon. Today Ji Li came home all excited about her audition to be in the dance group for the red guard committee. But sadly we had to tell her not to audition. She was beyond mad because she did not seem to understand that she can not audition because we have such a terrible class status. Then she got even more angry with us because my husband that i miss dearly was a landlord. But he was her grandfather, she should love him. It is now 1967
Everything is going wrong the revolution has got everyone going crazy! I feel terrible because my son is starting to get in trouble because they are accusing him of listening to foreign radio which he is not even doing!! I am very stressed because all i want is for my family to be well and never be hurt. Also i am very sad to say that we had to fire Song Po Po. She was like family to us. But we had to do it. After the newspaper put us on their front page saying that we owned millions of acres of land! 1968
tHINGS ARE GETTING WORST BY THE MINUTE! My son has been detained, and all because I am married to a landlord people are judging my family. And now twice a day I need to sweep the alley because of the letter we wrote about the theater. Ji-Li hid it in the cat litter but it was not good enough so my punishment is to sweep the alley. I want this revolution to end! Things are only getting worse and life is becoming more complicated.
About the author! I am a student at gulliver academy and i was born in Miami, my family moved to Colombia for a year when i was four. But then we moved back to miami. I am a Jr Sundancer in Gulliver Academy and i am also part of The Living Dolls Dance Factory’s competition team. I do not have much free time but whenever i do i enjoy crafting and spending time with my family. I loved learning about the cultural revolution and it helped me really understand how tough times were for the people living in China in that time period.
