Artist Statement Through the wide range of media I have been using, I tend to navigate with my artworks on the edges of disciplines, crossing the borders of professional territories. Starting from a given topic or structure, I am quite obsessed by the initial research of “raw” and “found” materials, references, quotes, anything that can build a virtual library to look at and start compositing. These are departure and arrival points for projects’ paths developed through drawings and moving images. With simple elements, I create imaginary stages where to play and reinterpret ironically fragments of reality, researching on the spaces of intimacy each individual creates in daily lives, in a social system that is more and more depending on automatic actions. In this gaze to people and body language, there is a suspension of judgment, the research for empathy through the analytical observation, the willing to dig into people differences and individuality, taking the risk of being a voyeur. The curiosity towards details of everyday life, brings to building possible stories, imaginations, fantasies, with a reference to myth and dream.

Towel Day A Tribute to Douglas Adams Year: 2017 Duration: 4 min 10” Format: HD 16:9 Genre: Music-video Directed and animated by Valeria Cozzarini Music by Alessandro Sbrogiò Produced by MEO team

“Towel Day” celebrates a worldwide event happening on the 25th of May for Douglas Adams’s fans and lovers to commemorate his rich work. With its visionary and psychedelic approach, this video is a tangle of references to Adams’ masterpiece “Hitchhiker’s guide to the galaxy”, intersecting ingredients from his colourful imaginary universe. The video shows musicians on their galactic journeys, wearing housecoats and towels, on Chesterfield sofas, among dolphins and teapots, pangalactic cocktails and shaken phones.

“Spaces of solitude” is a visual research on body language in public spaces, carried out through drawings, photos and video footage. The documented gestures, draw a map of body movements as signs that people convey unintentionally in their waiting time or when passing by in public. The collected footage of people in public spaces has been edited into a flow of movements. In a dark room, a back-projection displays the collage of gestures and postures of people waiting or transiting, the actress repeates those movements as if she was directed by the unconscious of people in their daily life.

Cerchi Year: 2010 Multimedia installation and performance The Exchange Gallery, Penzance (UK)

Opposite page: Photo documentation of the Performance “Cerchi at The Exchange Gallery Penzance (UK)

Drawing circles becomes a metaphor for the irrational processes coming over and over again the same thought: so does the hand that draws circles. The internal obsessions find a pathway to get out, through a physical gesture. Repetition in our mind is provoked by something painful that leaves a trail insides, the action of drawing circles exports this outside in a concrete movement and in a sensorial perception. Involving different media, from drawing to video, this project wants to cross the border of the art space as content of given aesthetical shapes, by transferring the creative process to the territory of ritual actions.

12 | PORTFOLIO 2017 | Valeria Cozzarini

TRACING The performance consists of tracing circular lines with a sharpened pencil on a 70x100 white sheet, until the graphite cannot trace anymore. The gesture will be repeated, sheet-bysheet and pencil-by-pencil until the physical and mental resistance allows it. The result consists of 121 sheets of circles. DOCUMENTING All the drawn paper with the circular traces are photographed one by one, positioned in the same spot, following a chronological sequence of realisation.

ELABORATION The images are cut together creating a video loop that last 5 minutes, by increasing and decreasing the fps. This loop is projected on a wall. FINAL OUTPUT The final act of the performance consists of tracing circles on the same sheet for the all length of a VHS camera. The result is the recording of the digital projection and the sound of the tracing gesture. This is presented to the audience in a TV monitor.

La stanza dei Tic Year: 2010 Multimedia installation Displayed at Galleria Care/of, Milan

A clock beats each second, a water tab keeps leaking, four characters in this room of tickings, are waiting: nothing happens except of their twitches, inconsistent movements of the body becoming performing actions. “Tics” are unconscious movements of some parts of the body and they reveal something, hidden in the internal state of mind of people, which slips form control. The body itself is speaking and expressing a necessity of communication, these movements reflect a conflict between the individual and the external world. The atmosphere is tense and defined by small and fragile movement of the body that are repeated endlessly and obsessively. 14 | PORTFOLIO 2017 | Valeria Cozzarini

Fighting against windmills is an italian idiom that refers to the insane effort of fighting against something that is impossible to defeat. A little girl with a red dress is busy giving shape to her innocent world, when something suddenly breaks in. As a modern Don Chisciotte she decides to fight against this abruption that interrupted her childhood, her naivety, her dreamlike world.

“Stay or go, work” questions the identity of a place such as the Frankfurt Hahn Airport, one of the biggest low cost flights airports located in a rural area with a history as a military base. As a main connection point for flights to all over Europe, the airport creates a surreal impression in the middle of the countryside. The opposition between the slow rythm of nature and the high speed of airplanes is overall present in the region, on a social, economical and cultural level. The short animated video is based on and inspired by interviews with 7 people working in the airport. The interviews have been translated into situation, where something or nothing happens, as a “tipical day” in this area. The interviews happened to be a filter of vision, to discover and feel the soul of this area, giving depth and humanising the perception of it.

“Due storie vere is a video project, commissioned by Social Council of Pordenone (North-east of Italy), which aimed to tell the true stories of Mario and Madlene, two disadvantaged young people. The animated clips are integrated with the video footage, as a symbolic level upon the narrative structure. The film deals with the lack of consciousness around some covered social issues that are difficult to be recognised in their complexity and dramatic aspects.

Maschera da Viaggio Year: 2005 Duration: 4 min Format: SD 4:3 Genre: Animation Directed and animated by Valeria Cozzarini Fine Arts Academy project

“Maschera da Viaggio” is inspired by the first lines of Böll`s novel “Ansichtes eines Clown”. It translates the written words into sequences of actions such as walking up and down the staircases, opening a door, staring at the mirror. The repetition of simple and common passages creates a sense of automatism, suddenly floated by dreamlike images. This surreal scene will get populated by objects that take the role of main characters and link the story to unravelled personal memories on travelling.
