BIA 100 Design Studio 2 Elements Valerija Morich Fiona Omeenyo “Malkari” 2017. jap 013688 | acrylic on canvas | 161 x 104 cm https://japingkaaboriginalart.com/collections/fiona-omeenyo-ancestors-and-spirits/ Because my surname starts with the letter “M”, the artwork that is alocated for me is a “Malkari” by Fiona Omeenyo, Australian indigenous female painter. Fiona Omeenyo paintings continue to reflect both traditional stories and contemporary themes associated with cultural, social and environmental concerns. The artists figurative compositions represent blood line, which connects ancestral spirits with kin relationships amidst coastal beach and reef imagery. Through supernatural manner, ancestors exist simultaneously with the present-day generation. According to Omeenyo, the ancestors exit simultaneously with the modern day generations, therefore her themes always revolve around bloodline, togetherness and family. “My figures are about family and country. I do my painting to carry my culture on and so my children will know our stories.” (Omeenyo). After observing the painting. i chose the 5 keywords: organic, free-flow, contour, highlighting, layering, and based my models by following the forms in the painting.
