DPS2020 ADDENDUM TO SYLLABUS DEGREE PROJECT STUDIO SPRING 2020 WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY IN ST. LOUIS SAM FOX SCHOOL OF DESIGN AND VISUAL ARTS GRADUATE SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE & URBAN DESIGN ARCHITECTURE A46 711 M, R, 12:30-5:30p
CHANDLER AHRENS, cahrens@wustl.edu, 310.804.0739 JULIE BAUER, julie.bauer@wustl.edu, 917.972.6631 VALERIE GREER, Coord., greer@wustl.edu, 314.308.9107 ADRIAN LUCHINI, luchini@wustl.edu, 314.599.0051 The pandemic of COVID 19 and the need to host remote learning underscores the need to critically reexamine the role and potential impact of design in the built environment. Additionally, the need to communicate effectively and precisely with drawings, models and diagrams—rather than relying on words and ideas—is of paramount importance in our present situation. We will be modifying deliverables and schedule outlined in the syllabus, with the following three key changes. Physical models are not required. For those whose design process relies on building models, we encourage to build with simple, inexpensive materials and photograph with simple technology. There will be no penalty for students unable to build a final physical model. The requirement to produce two ¼”=1’ building sections for the technical workshop and final review has been reduced to one (1) ¼”=1’ building section. Students who wish to develop two building sections at ¼”=1’ scale will certainly be helped by faculty to achieve this, however there will be no penalty for students who produce only one ¼”=1’ building section. The requirement to produce two exterior elevations for the final review is reduced to one (1) exterior elevation. SCHEDULE The calendar in the syllabus will remain as is, with the exception of having the week of 16 March as an extended spring break. Dates and format of final reviews are TBD. 1
DPS2020 There will be a standing meeting every Monday from 12:30-1p CST to convene all sections of DP in order to share announcements and look ahead at the week. A Zoom link to remote access will be provided, and a recording can be arranged should students be unable to attend in live time. Faculty will extend hours but studio will continue to be held on Monday and Thursday afternoons. Students and faculty should work together to coordinate individual needs. Desk crits will be held digitally/via Zoom and sign up lists will be posted electronically so that students can sign up for individual times with their faculty instructors. Should students or faculty members need to meet outside of the stated times, they should communicate directly with each other to coordinate a time/platform to meet. RESOURCES Folders have been individually established for each student in BOX under their studio instructor’s files. Students are asked to post the work they wish to discuss with their individual instructors on Sunday and Wednesday nights. Please follow the protocol outlined here in order to help the faculty best help you: 1. 2.
3.
Inside of your student file, create a folder with the date of your submission. Post a single PDF of the work you want your faculty instructor to review with date_lastname, so for example: March23_Evans.pdf Please keep the size of files reasonably manageable so that we can print and mark up; if necessary, the faculty member can then upload redlines/comments to the same folder.
REVIEWS The technical workshop will be conducted remotely with our guest critics agreeing to meet and collaborate with you online. The schedule identifying time for individual students is forthcoming. Please think of the technical session as a workshop rather than a review. Our consultants are quite used to working remotely, as are we, and so this is quite an extraordinary opportunity to work the way you might in practice. All students will be expected to post a single packet/PDF on 2
DPS2020 Wednesday, 1 April, so that your work along with your DT books can be shared with guest reviewers. SUPPORT Health and safety come first, and so should you have specific questions or concerns please feel free to reach out to any of us as we are wholly committed to your success. If you feel comfortable sharing you cell number with your faculty instructor, we have been advised that keeping a phone list can be extremely helpful in case of technology glitches. Our cell numbers are shared on the first page of this document. Thank you for your patience, talent and commitment to completing your work. On our first call, 12:30p CST on Monday, 23 March, each faculty instructor will outline a few more specifics with respect to coordinating their section of studio and supporting your success.
