Gentle Wine Catalog | Autumn ‘17 Selection The wines in this selection come from 9 Italian regions. Italy hosts the greatest variety of wines among all other countries; moreover, these many different varieties are also very distant from one to each other in terms of organoleptic characteristics. The nine regions selected are (in order of Postal Code): Piedmont, Liguria, Lombardy, Emilia – Romagna, Veneto, Friuli Venezia – Giulia, Tuscany, Apulia, Campania.

This map shows where the wines offered come from.

Wine People and Places Every wine is produced by a plant in a vineyard and by a person. This catalog purpose is to offer a good reason why to choose a wine made by a specific plant in a specific vineyard and by a specific person.

Gentle Wine Catalog | Autumn ‘17 While Alba is a town that also gives its name to a specific type of wines, Langhe and Roero are names of territories, very close one to each other but quite different in terms of skyline.

Piedmont: Alba, Langhe And Roero Piedmont has a proven history of fine wine production. Barbera, Barbaresco, Roero, Nebbiolo, Barolo‌ are wines that must be mentioned talking about Piedmont. The province of Cuneo and particularly Alba is recognised to be the cradle of such fabulous wines. Here a map that explain where Alba is.

Friuli Venezia Giulia is considered one of Italy's most prestigious winemaking regions. This is above all true in regard to its white wines for which this region is avant-garde and produces outstanding versions in diverse areas. [1]

Admirable attention has been paid to the vineyards: 15 hectares of vineyard like gardens. "But you have to take care of them. It's a hard work, day after day, but from all the cares you gave them you'll have back results" (Renzo Sgubin, Owner and Winemaker). [1] 38

Intriguing notes with floral notes of Elder, Jasmine, Orange blossom and a citrus mix. White peaches, sweet spices and acacia honey. This wine in mouth is linear, nitid, well-proportioned in comparison with its gliceric softness. The final sapidity enhance its varietal notes. [1] A delicate aroma that recalls anise makes the wine intriguing. The mouth is full, citrous and energic. Tonic and very drinkable finish. The price makes it even more tasteful. [2]

Friuli Venezia Giulia is considered one of Italy's most prestigious winemaking regions. This is above all true in regard to its white wines for which this region is avant-garde and produces outstanding versions in diverse areas. [1] 41

Gentle Wine Catalog | Autumn ‘17 “I have always sought to enhance the finest characteristics of the grapes that I ferment, using non-invasive vineyard techniques that do not detract from the recognisability of the variety. – he explains (Giorgio Badin, Owner and Winemaker, nrd.) – My ideal wine is balanced and elegant, with sufficient concentration that must never be transformed into muscular body for the mere sake of it. It must also be age worthy”. [1] 1.

Badin, Giorgio (web). "Ronco del Gelso". www.omniwines.com Retreived 14 June 2017.

Tasting notes This wine comes from the Pinot Grigio vineyards planted in Sot Lis Rivis, after which it is named. It is an opulent wine that is aged in used oak barrels to give an aromatic structure that the grape variety 42

Gentle Wine Catalog | Autumn ‘17 itself does not possess. The harvest is postponed as long as possible to take advantage of a particular characteristic of Pinot Grigio grapes, which lose water and weight if left on the vine when ripe, concentrating the fruity notes. The most interesting vintages are those with hot, warm days around the harvest, which yield a balanced Pinot Grigio Sot Lis Rivis with low acidity and good body supported by richness of flavour. The alcohol content is always high, but never burning, and confers sweetness in conjunction with the prominent fruit. The citrusy nose is unusual for a Pinot Grigio and is echoed on the palate. Do not expect a simple wine, as many do from this variety.

Pairings It is good with numerous dishes, but is excellent with raw tuna and swordfish and with all oily fish dishes. It is also a good accompaniment to food with citrus marinades.

Tasting notes This wine is a blend of Friulano, Riesling, Pinot Bianco and a small amount of Traminer Aromatico, in proportions that vary from vintage to vintage. Its personality is closely associated with the presence of Riesling and Traminer, which give it a highly 43

Gentle Wine Catalog | Autumn ‘17 aromatic German-style character, while Friulano confers vigour and Pinot Bianco delicate ripe fruit. It is fermented in steel, where it subsequently remains ageing on the lees until a few days before bottling. The grape varieties that compose it always mingle well, as required by any self-respecting blend. It is a big, balanced, concentrated wine.

Gentle Wine Catalog | Autumn ‘17 Tasting notes The wine is soft, full and balanced, despite its high acidity and alcohol content, and has the delicate aromatic notes typical of the variety. It is aged on the lees in 2,500litre oval barrels and bottled in the autumn following the harvest. It is a linear but Mediterranean wine, with unusually good development, in which the palate maintains what the nose promises, displaying good balance and elegance.

Pairings It is ideal served chilled with grilled fish or baked white fish. It is also an excellent aperitif and a summer wine par excellence. Reviews This wine is made from Malvasia, a grape that I am not usually partial to except when it comes from this part of Friuli, Isonzo. Here I find it shows great fruit, minerality, salinity and spice. A powerful combination that makes it a great food wine. I would love to have this wine with Indian food or Sushi. The aromas and flavours are due to the great microclimate, soils and fresh breezes in this area as well as its proximity to the sea. [1]

Tasting notes The climate and gravelly soils of the Isonzo plain are ideal for this grape variety, which prefers warm, dry soils not too far from the sea. Fermented in steel, it always has a characteristic salty acidity and long 49

Gentle Wine Catalog | Autumn ‘17 1. Gold, Susannah (web). "Wine Wednesday: Ronco del Gelso Vigna Permuta". www.avvinare.com Retrieved 14 June 2017.

Tasting notes This wine is made from Friulano grapes grown in vineyards in the lower area of Cormòns. Like many other Italian native grape varieties, it has a flavour far removed from the so-called international taste, but this does not make it a minor wine. The fruity notes of apples, peaches and apricots are replaced by hazelnuts and bitter almonds. It is a glycerine-rich wine with firm body, characterised by light tannins reminiscent of liquorice. It has a slightly bitter aftertaste, but surprisingly this gives it finesse and nobility. It is always a handsome greenish colour.

Terre del Principe is the small, precious company of Manuela Piancastelli and Peppe Mancini who had had, at the late 80's, the privilege of re-discovering three ancient autochthonous vines of Caserta (province of Campania): Pallagrello Bianco, Pallagrello Nero and Casavecchia. [1] Manuela Piancastelli and Peppe Mancini are partners in life and on the job and are the "prophets" of Casavecchia and Pallagrello Nero, two wines that had all but disappeared and which they brought back from near-extinction some 15 years ago. They thus hold a very special place in the world of Campania winemaking and continue to what they do best with passion and determination, turning out wines that can move you year after year. [2] 1.
