Fountainbridge, Edinburgh
Design and illustration of the Fountainbridge Masterplan. This multi award winning ÂŁ120m project is transforming the former SNH Kegging plant site with a total of 650 homes, offices and retail spaces envisioned.
2007
Oberlanders obtained Outline Planning Consent for the masterplan massing in 2006, before progressing with detail design.

Springside, Edinburgh
2009
Detailed design and delivery of Phase 1 of the Fountainbridge project, known as Springside, extended the existing Brandfield Street and Upper Grove Place to create a unique new link via a new urban space with a linear park, accessible to all. The phase 1 shell was succesfully completed in time and on budget with BAM in December 2010.

As a ‘Villa Area’ policy designated Conservation Area the planning application was ultimately refused on grounds of being a precedent for backland development, contradictory to policy.

Design and delivery of a fit-out of the Cambridge Grand Arcade Schuh shop. Post involvement with similar stores in Limerick and Glasgow.

Planning Application for a new 1400m², 8 bed roomed, luxury home consisting of two wings connected by a glazed foyer containing a feature stair. Detailed Building Warrant / Production Information for the central feature stair, a complex curving sculptural object overlooking both East and West, towards the wooded surroundings and the entrance courtyard.

Western General Hospital, Traffic Management and Public Realm Works Design of major traffic management and public realm improvements at the Western General Hospital, forming part of the ongoing masterplan for redevelopment of clinical and non-clinical services at the site.

The traffic management works included major alterations to traffic infrastructure, improved pedestrian areas and associated hard and soft landscaping works.

Working extensively with Historic Scotland, Scottish Natural Heritage, A+DS and The City of Edinburgh Council to sensitively create a wide range of exceptional apartments, complimented by a portfolio of contemporary residential buildings, adjacent the existing historic fabric, echoing the context of large collegiate buildings set within extensive landscaped grounds.

Sugarhouse Close, Edinburgh
Job running this 300 bed student accommodation development for Watkin Jones and Sons Ltd, from inception to completion (August 2012). The project is located within the Edinburgh World Heritage Site and accessed from the Royal Mile. It was one of the first Major Project planning applications to be processed through the new Planning Scotland Act Community Engagement and Consultation process.

Through a series of site visits and presentations we engaged with the Edinburgh Urban Design Panel, Historic Scotland, The Cockburn Association, local councilors and residents, gaining such encouragement and support, it was allowed to be approved under Delegated powers.

The project retains a number of Listed buildings which are made visible from a new Courtyard and Close, unlocking key routes and unseen vistas from The Royal Mile and Holyrood Road towards the historic Brewhouses and Kilns.

Sugarhouse Close won a commendation at this years Civic Trust Awards, 2013 Scottish Design Awards and the Scottish Governments, Scottish Quality in Planning Awards. I was also very pleased to see a photo of the project adorns the front cover of the May 2013 edition of the Edinburgh Design Guide from the City of Edinburgh Council.

IGMM Western General Hospital, Edinburgh
Initial feasibility and concept design of an ÂŁ8.6m research laboratory at the Western General Hospital linking three buildings (Medical Research Council, University and Cancer Research laboratory) to form a world class research institute.

Detailed design of the oval, timber clad auditorium / lecture theatre at ground level. Working to maximise acoustic quality and audibility of the speaker throughout the room the design incorporates randomly shaped, angled and sized acoustic panels aiding acoustic diffusion and minimising echo / din.

Planning consent was gained in January 2013, construction commenced in July 2013, with the facility becoming fully operational in Autumn of 2015.

Balfour Beattys first major Scottish project to BIM Level 2. Managing cross-disciplinary BIM collaboration as principal architect on this project, which has a full Revit model coordinated with the various consultants (JM Architects, Blyth and Blyth and RSP).

The project, located within the Edinburgh World Heritage Site and accessed from Holyrood Road, will provide new retail and social space with accommodation for 924 students, creating a new Post-Graduate Urban Village for The University of Edinburgh.

Moredun Business Hub, Pentlands Science Park
Planning application design of a ÂŁ1.5 million extension forming a new business hub for the Moredun Foundation, a charitable enterprise promoting animal health and welfare, located on the Pentlands Science Park.

The design, inspired by the form of a livestock market, features a circular forum / debate space for presentation and discussion, with a large roof-light over. A new accessible roof garden will embrace vistas over the beautifully landscaped campus, a suitable processional conclusion for visitors. Planning consent was granted in September 2015.
