a taxi without agreeing on the price with the driver first. Price is per trip not person.
TIME ZONE: The entire state of Jalisco is on Central Time, as is the southern part of the State of Nayarit starting from San Blas in the north.
MONEY EXCHANGE: Although you may have to wait in line for a few minutes, banks will give you a higher rate of exchange than the exchange booths (caja de cambio). You will need your passport. Better yet, use your bank card to withdraw funds from any ATM machine. Note that ATM’s in the banks are the safest to use and generally charge lower fees.
BUSES: A system of urban buses with different routes can bring you from one end of the bay to the other and all the spots in between. Current fare is $6.50 pesos per ticket and passengers must purchase a new ticket every time they board another bus. There are no “transfers”. TAXIS: There are set rates within defined zones of town. Do not enter

what comes out of the tap at the other end. So do be careful. If you want to be doubly sure, you can pick up purified bottled water just about anywhere.
CALLING IN MEXICO Calling phones in Mexico can be tricky as it is different than in the US or Canada. There are different codes you need to use depending if you are calling landlines or cellular phones and if they are local or long distance.
EXPORTING PETS: Fall in love with the street dog outside your hotel or a puppy on the Malecon doesn’t mean they can’t come home with you. The process is fairly inexpensive and only takes a day or two. You need a certificate of health from a local vet among other things. The time of year that pets can travel in the cargo section of the plane may be your biggest challenge. For the most up-to-date information contact the Puerto Vallarta SPCA at spcapv@gmail.com.
Long-distance calls from within Mexico For national long-distance calls (within Mexico) the code is 01 plus the area code and phone number. For international long-distance calls, first dial 00, then the country code (for the U.S. and Canada the country code is 1, so you would dial 00 + 1 + area code + 7 digit number).

Calling Cell Phones Within the area code of the Mexican cell phone number dial 044, then the area code, then the phone number. Outside of the area code (but still within Mexico) dial 045 and then the 10 digit phone number. Phone Cards Phone cards (“tarjetas telefonicas”) for use in pay phones can be bought at newstands and in pharmacies in denominations of 30, 50 and 100 pesos. Pay phones do not accept coins. When buying a phone card for pay phone use, specify that you would like a “tarjeta LADA,” because pre-paid cell phone cards are also sold in the same establishments. Calling Toll-Free Numbers Some toll free numbers work from Mexico to the US and Canada, but many do not. You need to dial a different prefix. To call the following toll free prefixes, dial as follows: 800 numbers Dial 001-880-then the number 866 numbers Dial 001-883-then the number 877 numbers Dial 001-882-then the number 888 numbers Dial 001-881-then the number

Vallarta Restaurant Week
From May 15th-31st, for the ninth year in a row, some of the most recognized restaurants in the Bay of Banderas will once again be offering special three-course menus, with three choices per course, at fixed prices of either $189 or $299 pesos. Thirty-five restaurants will participate in this year’s edition of one of the areas most important culinary events, seven of which are first-time participants. Many venues will also feature live entertainment to enhance your dining pleasure.
Distinct Worlds Editor’s Note: As the last of the snowbirds flys home, it has become a much quieter city these past weeks. That didn’t stop many hundred residents and visitors alike to join in the festivities of the 9th Annual Altruism Festival held at the CasaMarriot this past Sunday. What a treat to sample all these wonderful restaurants in support of many of the Bay’s most needy charities. It was great to put so many faces to names and to finally meet many of you. I have to say my absolute favourite was the Grilled Oyster with Bacon Foam from Café des Artistes, but in truth everything tasted wonderful and it was a buffet for the senses. Lucky me! I even won a couple of the raffle
prizes! If you haven’t been to this event or you head home too early to enjoy it, please consider attending next year. It’s so well produced, the food is excellent, it’s for a good cause and really the weather isn’t so bad… That said, it’s like the seasons shifted this week. The heat is beginning to sap some of my energy and the rising humidity is doing things to my hair that no stylist can control. As a matter of fact, I issue you a challenge – short of cutting it all off – how do you contain wildly curly hair in this humidity? That would be a great column to for this newspaper – beauty tips in the heat. Some other column ideas we are fleshing out include a weekly interview with a local resident. If you have a story to tell about why
you love the Puerto Vallarta area and Mexico in general, we would love to hear it. Maybe over 2 for 1 Mojitos and Green Papaya Salad at Joe Jacks Fish Shack? Just a suggestion… We are also going to bring you a series of articles on great things to do and places to visit to Beat the Heat this summer. First stop – Mascota for some paddling around the lake and star gazing then up to Guadalajara for 72 hours of shopping, festivities, more shopping and eating. If you’ve got story ideas, comments on the new path the paper has taken, or just want to invite me out for cocktails – send me an email. Always look forward to meeting new friends. Madeline Milne

An Inclusive Beach on Mexico’s Caribbean Coast Now the Mexican Caribbean is for everyone to enjoy; absolutely everyone, including the disabled. On February 14, Mexico’s first ever inclusive beach was unveiled in the municipality of Solidaridad, Quintana Roo. Located just a stone’s throw from Playa del Carmen, Cancún, the pyramids of Tulum, the cenotes (underwater sinkholes) and water parks of the Mayan Riviera, this stretch of beach invites disabled people from all over the world to come and bask in the
sun, sand and infinite shades of blue and green of the Caribbean. To facilitate access, the local government had ramps made. Loungers, bicycles and walking frames are available for those who require them, and there is a special service module for the rental of beach towels. The hope is that inclusive developments such as these will become commonplace along the Mayan Riviera and in all major resort areas. www.solidaridad.gob.mx

This is Paradise...
By Marcia Blondin
This Saturday visit the Paradise Community Center´s Market Co-op for last minute Mother´s Day gifts. We are the only Market open all year round and this month we are welcoming many new vendors who will be appearing soon in this column. Until then… introducing a few more market regulars... Enrique is not only gorgeous but multi-talented as well. Primarily a photographer of typical Vallarta scenes and landmarks, whether shooting a gathering of clay pots, Mexican blankets, cats, old doors and fruits and vegetables at market, Enrique´s discerning eye, takes on a new perspective splashed with vivid
colors.”Quique” never photographs people – he saves them for his highly stylized paintings reminiscent of the style of Aubrey Beardsley, rendered in joyously vibrant watercolors. Mark´s “Smoking Good Meats” include lomos, hams, chicken breasts, fish and beef jerky - all slowly smoked over select jungle hardwoods. To complement the meats Mark carries hard-to-find natural and smoked cheeses. Organically grown pickles (dill or sweet) and pickled beets with garlic (the best I have ever had!) are both great with the herb and garlic, chipotle, and chipotle and blackberry dips; super for crudités and bagels…

Complementing Mark’s meats you should grab a couple of Peter’s authentic bagels. On Saturdays Peter comes to Market loaded with different kinds of bagels, deli breads and buns that our discerning clientele happily line up for every week. (I am convinced Peter is a closet New Yorker!) The cinnamon buns are easily the size of a bread and butter plate and do constitute a full breakfast. Serena is originally from Como, Italy. She imports lovely silk scarves from her hometown and sells them at our Co-op at the Paradise Community Center. Her main – and beautiful –focus, however, is jewelry she creates using sterling silver and latón. Necklaces, earrings, rings and bracelets shine with colored pearls, crystals, lapis lazuli and other semi precious gems. Stop by to practice your Italiano and Español! Our Jan of “Jan´s Specialty Condiments” asked me to let everyone know she has Mango Chutney, Pear/Molasses Chutney and Mixed Berry Jam at her table every Saturday Market Coop, located across the street from Coco´s Kitchen in the Zona Romantica. See you there!
Jorge Acosta and Friends By Marcia Blodin What a Cinco de Mayo celebration was had at the Paradise Community Center last Saturday night! Jorge Acosta has one of those voices that seep into your bones and rests there, stirring up memories of Mariachi, old Mexican favorites, romantic ballads and songs from Veracruz, Jorge´s home state. Deeply powerful one minute to sorrowfully lamenting the next, Jorge enchanted everyone with his charming presence and light banter between numbers. One of Jorge´s friends is Eduardo León, flamenco guitarist extraordinaire with lovely harmonic backup vocals. From Oaxaca, José Román, accompanied Eduardo and Jorge on guitar and amazed the audience with his exquisite and lively harp stylings.
Enrique (“who plays with everybody”, laughed Jorge!) was his usual captivating self on bongos and congas. Without a doubt the most beautiful of the friend’s on stage was Polish-born flautist and classically trained singer Beata Standkiewicz. Her crystal clear soprano voice melded with Jorge´s in too few numbers but they have promised to appear together more often in the future. Their duet and encore performance of “O Solo Mio” brought the house to their feet for a welldeserved standing ovation. Thanks to Jorge and his friends for a fabulous evening. It was also this season´s PCC event finale. Many thanks to Stage Manager Todd Ringness for his great expertise in bringing hundreds of people together for happy tuneful times all season long.

The Diversity In Our Bay MANTA RAYS Probably one of the most exciting things we have to report on the bay are the giant manta rays (Manta birostris), that are becoming a frequent sighting for us when we are diving, and floating around on the surface. These creatures can have up to a 23 foot wingspan and are really impressive to dive with. They are completely friendly creatures, and love to come and check us out. It is impossible to miss them as we lose all sunlight! When they are over our heads, we spray our bubbles onto their bellies, which stop them in their tracks. They seem to love being tickled by this.
Between Los Arcos and Majahuitas, we have been seeing a school of over 100 baby manta´s since last June. These babies and the giant adults can be seen flying out of the water regularly, and seeing a giant manta breech is quite a spectacle. I hope they are here to stay. WHALE WATCHING – ORCAS & HUMPBACKS The whale watching season was a thriller this year. The Orca´s entertained us for a few weeks. The first time I saw an Orca in person was in the bay this winter. We had 3 juvenile males follow our boat along the
south shore all the way to Los Arcos. On this occasion, one of the divers got straight back onto the boat. Completely understandable as these whales are the kings of the ocean with no natural predators. These three Orca’s were routinely less than twenty feet from us and in fact the third time we ran across them there were five in the pod, one of which was twenty feet long, and again, less than twenty feet from me! I was on the surface, trying to look cool, with a boat full of divers
laughing at me. It was thrilling to say the least, and I wish I had reacted quicker and taken some photos to prove it. The humpbacks were active this year, and suitably entertained our guests whenever we saw them. The magic moment that sticks out for me, was seeing a mother giving birth. We went close to check her out as she seemed to be in some distress. We could see nothing wrong with her, but she was rolling about at the surface. Then, this sweet little ten foot long, ten ton baby
appeared, flapping around at the surface with its tail, seemingly very happy. Mum got the baby and flicked it off her tail 5 or 6 times, before the pair of them happily swam off. The bay may not have crystal clear Caribbean waters all year round, but what it lacks in warmth and clarity in the winter months, it sure makes up for with its wealth of diversity and entertaining wildlife.

Swimming Lessons are for Everyone There are certain things about the summer season in Vallarta that I don’t necessarily look forward to, such as the heat that makes me nearly homicidal whenever any article of my own clothing touches my body. But there is one thing that makes me smile once April rolls around, and that’s the return of after school swimming lessons. As an aside, I don’t really like to admit to my Canadian family and friends that we have had a four month hiatus from the lessons all the way from December to April. In the words of the swimming coach, the water is demasiado frio para nadar. These sorts of comments are quick to bring forth a rather sarcastic snort from my winterhardened Canadian fellows, whose lake temperatures in midAugust make the January Puerto Vallarta pools seem like a wade in the Jacuzzi. Needless to say, my sisterin-law thinks that my children are surely Olympic-level swimmers by now, with all the skill they must have picked up over an entire school year. Not wanting to disappoint her or to have her children surpass my own in skill level (what with the indoor winter classes up there in Winnipeg), back we go to the pool every Tuesday and Thursday at
4pm. In any case, I can’t tell you I’m sorry. I don’t know about the rest of my parent readers out there, but I can’t see the downside to providing a healthy, wholesome physical activity for my six and eight-year-old that doesn’t require a lot of input from me besides financial. All I really need to do is sit in the shade of the hotel gazebo and look somewhat interested and mainly alert (I can proudly say that I only fell asleep once. I felt a bit awkward for the person who had been speaking to me, but hey, we’ve been married for 5 years already, surely it was time to bring his conversation game up a notch anyway). In case you, too, would like the chance to doze off while your children receive a complement to their already fine education, there are a number of places in Puerto Vallarta that offer swimming lessons to children. The American School of Puerto Vallarta offers classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4pm until mid-June. For more information, call 226 7670 . There is also a swimming school called Acuatica Escualos in Fluvial, call 293 3721. If you cross the Pitillal bridge to Colonia Bobadilla, there is a sportsplex with an Olympic-sized pool that also gives lessons, call 225 9659.

Prison Dolls: Building upon hardship By Madeline Milne Photos By Barb Nettleton If you had plenty of free time on your hands, what would you do? For a large percentage of todays population retirement is a reality and free time is plentiful. For many travel, philanthropy and family will take priority, but imagine if your life was turned upside down and you didn`t get the freedom to make these choices. That`s what happened to Rebecca Roth. A successful business owner in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico Rebecca got snared in an unjust legal battle that ultimately saw her imprisoned (and later exonerated) for over four years in the Reclusorio Feminil of Puente Grande near Guadalajara. This women`s prison would be her home and the crux of her new found `free time’. Not diminishing that emotionally and physically this experience took its toll on Rebecca, what came out of the experience was a new found passion and an opportunity to take on challenges otherwise lost to time constraints and pressures of life in general. Imprisoned with Rebecca was the infant daughter of a woman who became pregnant while in jail. Children born in jail can remain with their mothers up to 3 years of age. Little Lupita was adored by all in the communal cell but none had the capacity to give this child a toy that was more than an empty pop bottle. Realizing she wasn’t going anywhere fast and she needed an outlet for her anger and depression, Rebecca took it upon her-
self to use time wisely. The prison offered many classes and so she went back to school to learn Spanish, taught English to the other women and took sewing classes. One day, armed with some scraps of material and a needle and thread, Rebecca crafted a doll for Lupita. This doll and a blossoming relationship with one of her English students, Esme, started what would soon become the Original Friends Dolls (trademarked in Mexico in February 2011). While in prison Rebecca, Esme and the other woman crafted and sold over one hundred dolls. Today many hundreds of these beautiful works of art have been sold. Available for purchase online and at the many artisan markets in Lake Chapala and around the Bay of Banderas as well as at the Feria de Maestros del Arte each year in Ajijic, each doll is a unique one-of-a-kind creation, numbered, signed and named. About 85% of the materials are donated, found and upcycled. Each woman is paid for their work every Friday and remaining profit is divided equally between Esme and Rebecca, the two founders of the project. Approximately one doll a week is hand made by each woman. Rebecca continues to create dolls but finds herself with increasingly less time as her travels and commitment to managing the production and sale of the dolls leads her back to the regular clock of us working stiffs. Ask Rebecca today about her experience and you`ll find a warm hearted woman with an honest face that speaks with little bitter-
Barb Nettleton and Rebecca Roth ness and only a tinge of sadness. ‘I believe I was given opportunities for things I always wanted to do in my life, such as having my art exhibited in a world-renowned gallery…or publishing three books of poetry. These are all lifelong dreams of mine, accomplished ironically during the severe hardship of incarceration in a foreign prison.’ After being released in March of 2010, Rebecca continues to live in Mexico where her sister and children remained and she continues with the Original Friend Doll project both as a source of income and as a means to help the women within the prison to survive and fight their own legal battles. Today, with the help of women still incarcerated and a few that have continued to create dolls after being released, these little ‘ambassadors for liberty and justice’ are sold to collectors world-wide. Esme remains incarcerated but has not lost hope as she still has a final appeal remaining. According to Rebecca,‘The project has grown beyond all expectations because it goes full circle. • It provides a creative outlet and good income to the women who make the dolls; many who have never been encouraged to be artistic. It’s great stress relief as well during those long months and years of waiting in legal limbo. • It provides motivation to people who have an excess of materials, to clean out their boxes, bins, and drawers and donate the materials to a good purpose. • The dolls themselves provide joy and since each doll is signed by its maker, the new owner “knows” the doll artist and can remember her when they pass by the doll on its shelf, mantle, or bed. The colors and designs attract customers to the farmers market stands, where the dolls seem to pick out their new owners!’ Rebecca even receives
photos of the dolls in their new settings from all over the world. If you wish to purchase a doll, visit them on facebook: Originalfriendsdolls/prison project… Don’t forget to like and share photo albums with your contacts. For more information: www.prisondolls.com or www. mexicoartshow.com

Catches by Day (maximums per vessel): Three Sailfish - minimum weight 25 kg each Three Mahi Mahi - with minimum weight 10 kg each One Marlin - minimum weight of 85 kg * Note: every single fish officially weighed in, after a vessel’s return, will become the property of the Sport-fishing Club of Tepic, even if it doesn’t meet the minimum weight. So, don’t get attached folks.
Join us for fun and fundraising at Philo’s Bar on June 1 at 7:00 to celebrate the Nayarit Optimist Sailors who will be representing Mexico at the two highest level International sailing events - the Optimist World Championship to be held in Italy and the North American Championship to be held in Bermuda. Philo’s is providing their world famous ribs - all you can eat - plus a night of great entertainment. This event is hosted by Janet and Jess Coburn, and all funds will be administered by them to pay for the costs of travel and inscription fees for Adrian Varela and Carlos Sainz. Please invite your friends to join us! Tickets: $250 Pesos ($150 going to the fundraising efforts) includes all you can eat ribs, an automatic entry to the door prize drawings, and a night of fun!
Next sunday, Kendra uploaded a pic showing breakfast served on the roof terrace of her suite at Villa La Estancia, telling her fans that this was the way to start “Cinco de Mayo” celebrations. In the past few months, Riviera Nayarit welcomed many celebrities, with visits from Thierry Henry, Kate Hudson, Felicity Huffman, Gerry Lopez and the Kardashian sisters Kim and Kourtney, Lady Gaga, Courteney Cox, Charlie Sheen, Mario Lopez, Sofia Vergara, among many others.

Hockey Night in Vallarta By Joel Hansen It happened to me again. After Game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals two years ago I thought we (Canucks fans) were so close to hoisting the Cup that I bought in for 2012, and even though they showed flaws last year, they still won the Presidents trophy and kept promising me that they would flip the switch in the post season, turning it on for a run to the Cup. Well of course that ended in five miserable games against the eventual champs from LA. Tune in to 2013 and they did it again. I vowed to not buy in this year, after all the Canucks had let me down for two years and we were just emerging from the greed inspired lockout that nearly cost the entire season, so instead of watching I went surfing at Punta Mita, I walked my dog on the Malecon, went
for sunset dinners at Barracuda and watched with great interest as Mexico began its qualifying efforts for Brazil 2014. Hell, I didn’t need the Canucks or any hockey for that matter, I live in Puerto Vallarta, the greatest place on earth, but of course in the end like all sports junkies I came around.
Well here we are, barely a week has past in the 2013 playoffs and the Canucks are out, swept with hardly any effort put forth by San Jose and I have that same empty feeling again. But this will be the last time this group fools me. There needs to be wholesale changes within this group, as I write this I am listening to the press conference from Vancouver,
with my fingers crossed that coaches are fired and players are traded. I cannot root for this team, not any longer, the smugness of this team has official turned me off. As I look around at the other series in this first round I see underdogs like the Islanders battling the team most people had basically already awarded the Stanley Cup to in Pittsburg. I see Minnesota and
Chicago locked in an entertaining series, the Senators and Canadians going to war every night. The season is over for the Canucks and my jersey has been hung up in the closet for another year, but a very entertaining opening round of the playoffs continues and you can still catch all the action at Los Muertos brewpub.

“We are the only Englishspeaking liturgical church in Vallarta” says Fr. Jack+, the Rector of the church. “We have been called ‘the friendliest church I’ve ever attended’ and it makes us feel good to see how many people attend church while on vacation”, he says. The church is located at 7936 Blvd. Fco. Medina Ascencio, next to Sixt Car Rental on the frontage road, across the street from the airport. The outside of the church has been painted a terra cotta color, which gives it new life. We have newly remodeled men and women’s bathrooms, the second floor of the front building has a newly designed floor plan, including a meeting/Bible study room, then the new chapel, and two private offices. This floor will be air conditioned for use during the hot, humid months. The church is now OPEN YEAR ROUND, and we are pleased to announce that The

Christ Church by the Sea has a new look !
Rev. Vern Sorenson+ has agreed to lead the services this summer, with various priests who are visiting from the U.S. and Canada, assisting him. Vern and his lovely wife, Sylvia, are long-time residents of Vallarta, and have served at other churches in the area. In addition to our regular Sunday service at 10:00 a.m., the church holds many special services, including Ash Wednesday, with soup supper following, a
St. Patrick’s Day traditional corned beef dinner which is always a sell-out, and an Easter brunch following the service, which is always well attended. Come join our ever-growing family, and help us share God’s Word in Vallarta. Check out our web-site Christchurchbythesea. org or call 322 209-0895 for further information. We hope to see you soon !!

f you have been following us on Facebook you are probably familiar with the little guys we have nicknamed the “Rat Pack” as profiled in a wonderful video done by our friend Carol Martin. If you haven’t seen the video yet, check it out on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=q7jVhDF-74k). They are now all healthy, sterilized and ready for adoption. First to be in the spotlight is Joey (as in Joey Bishop!!). At four months he is still a little guy so we don’t expect him to get too big. He will be a perfect companion. Please contact us at spcapv@ gmail.com. Our sanctuary is pre-
paring for the difficult summer months when Vallarta’s economy that depends on tourism is at a low and many animals become homeless. Help us continue our efforts. To use your credit card to make tax deductible donations through PayPal, go to our website www. spcapv.com/donate/.
