welcome

Welcome to Puerto Vallarta

and Riviera Nayarit Here is some advice to make your trip a little easier and more enjoyable. TIME ZONE: The entire state of Jalisco is on Central Time, as is the southern part of the State of Nayarit starting from Guayabitos in the north. BUSES: A system of urban buses with different routes can bring you from one end of the bay to the other and all the spots in between. Current fare is $7.50 pesos per ticket and passengers must purchase a new ticket every time they board another bus. There are no “transfers”. TAXIS: There are set rates within defined zones of town. Do not enter a taxi without agreeing on the price with the driver first. Price is per trip not person. MONEY EXCHANGE: Although you may have to wait in line for a few minutes, banks will give you a higher rate of exchange than the exchange booths (caja de cambio). You will need your passport. Better yet, use your bank card to withdraw funds from any ATM machine. Note that ATM’s in the banks are the safest to use and generally charge lower fees. DRINKING WATER: For the year 18 in a row, Puerto Vallarta’s water has been awarded a certification of purity for human consumption. The quality of the water tested at the purification plant varies greatly from what comes out of the tap at the other end. So do be careful. If you want to be doubly sure, you can pick up bottled water just about anywhere. EXPORTING PETS: Falling love with the street dog outside your hotel or a puppy on the Malecon doesn’t mean they can’t come home with you. The process is fairly inexpensive and only takes a day or two. You need a certificate of health from a local vet among other things. The time of year that pets can travel in the cargo section of the plane may be your biggest challenge. For the most up-to-date information contact the Puerto Vallarta SPCA at spcapv@gmail.com. COMMON SENSE: Just as you wouldn’t walk around your hometown drunk and beligerent, it is not acceptable to do that here. While Mexicans are a forgiving bunch, basic politeness is appreciated. For the guys, peeing in public is a major faux pas and if you are caught, can get you tossed in jail or an expensive fine. Pay attention to your surroundings. Pay your bills. Be courteous. And have fun! DRINKING AND DRIVING: First off – just don’t. The consequences are not worth it. Taxis are cheap and plentiful. Fines are as much as 10,000 pesos. You can be taken to jail and your vehicle impounded. There are many checkstops on the weekends and you will be asked to blow if they suspect you have been drinking. LEGAL SYSTEM: Not knowing the law is not an valid excuse in Mexico or anywhere. If you find yourself caught in a legal situation be aware that guilt is presumed until your innocence can be proven. This is a very difficult lesson to learn if you are visiting from the United States or Canada in particular. Immediately contact your consulate for assistance.

Calling in Mexico Calling phones in Mexico can be tricky as it is different than in the US or Canada. There are different codes you need to use depending if you are calling landlines or cellular phones and if they are local or long distance. Long-distance calls from within Mexico For national long-distance calls (within Mexico) the code is 01 plus the area code and phone number. For international long-distance calls, first dial 00, then the country code (for the U.S. and Canada the country code is 1, so you would dial 00 + 1 + area code + 7 digit number). Calling Cell Phones (from a land line) If you are calling from a landline within the area code of the Mexican cell phone number dial 044, then the 10 digit number including area code. Outside of the area code (but still within Mexico) dial 045 and then the 10 digit phone number. Cell phone to cell phone only requires the 10 digit number. Phone Cards Phone cards (“tarjetas telefonicas”) for use in pay phones can be bought at newstands and in pharmacies in denominations of 30, 50 and 100 pesos. Pay phones do not accept coins. When buying a phone card for pay phone use, specify that you would like a “tarjeta LADA,” because pre-paid cell phone cards are also sold in the same establishments. Calling Toll-Free Numbers Some toll free numbers work from Mexico to the US and Canada, but many do not. You need to dial a different prefix. To call the following toll free prefixes, dial as follows: 800 numbers Dial 001-880-then the number 866 numbers Dial 001-883-then the number 877 numbers Dial 001-882-then the number 888 numbers Dial 001-881-then the number

T

he month of May continues to entertain. Every time I turn around it’s another holiday, fiesta, celebration. This weekend we have Vallarta Pride events overlapping with the start of Puerto Vallarta’s Birthday celebrations and the restaurants around the bay offering specially priced three course meals for Restaurant Week. If you are in town from now until the 31st of May you are in for a treat with live music, performances, fireworks, parades and of course, plenty of cake! We have a call for help from CANICA, the local charity that assists children with cancer. They recently took in four new children all who have dire needs and one in particular that requires considerable assistance. This small 8-year-old boy has suffered much in the past few

months and CANICA is looking for your support at their next breakfast fundraiser to help him and his family recover from this devastating disease. Your $200 pesos will help far more than you can know. All the details are on page 6 in this weeks paper. We also have the ongoing Friday Market at Marsol Hotel lobby in front of the pier on Los Muertos beach offering many of our favourite gifts and food items each week. They are planning a special `Summer Splash´ on Wednesday May 27th with specials, music, art and more. As it begins to really heat up (though the evenings have been lovely this month haven’t they) you know the rains aren’t far behind. Please take some time to prepare your self and your homes for the floods. Removing garbage from the

streets and riverbanks is a formidable task but it is so needed before the rains wash it into the ocean. Also standing water brings mosquitos and all the troubles they bear with them. If you’re just visiting us, please branch out and explore the cities and towns that make up Banderas Bay. You will find friendly faces, fabulous restaurants, great shopping and lots of activities to do. Head to Mismaloya for Bungee Jumping or butterfly hunting and the Zoo is great too. Take a cruise to the Mariettas Islands or enjoy Rhythms of the Night which is a breathtaking experience. Stroll along the malecon every night until the end of the month for free concerts. Hop the bus for a surf day in Sayulita or massages on the beach in Bucerias. If you need a break from the heat, there are plenty of excellent (and so cheap!) movie theaters with air conditioning and the latest in Hollywood blockbusters in English. Get out and enjoy the Bay of Banderas and all it has to offer. Madeline

ome and spend a rewarding afternoon cuddling the animals at Puerto Vallarta’s SPCA Sanctuary. Our dogs and cats are awaiting “forever homes” and your help is needed to jump start their socialization. The goal is to get these animals adjusted and ready to interact in the real world. The majority of the SPCA animals either come from extremely abusive situations or they have been abandoned. Your love and attention can make up for that sad history. During your visit, you can interact with the animals and even take a dog (or two or three) for a walk. You can also play with the animals, assist the vet or help with dinner time. Are you ready to get involved? Pack your bag for an amazing afternoon at the SPCA! Please bring water, a sack lunch and any treats you might enjoy during your visit. Sharing food with the animals is prohibited. We encourage you to bring your camera. Take as many photos as you like, and share them with us and your social media community. Your photos and videos can help these dogs and cats find their forever homes with people

who will treat them with the love and care they deserve. We have scheduled tours each week and vehicle space is limited. We ask everyone to meet in the Costco parking lot beside the three large trees in open grassy area. You can either caravan in your own vehicle or ride with us out to the Sanctuary (reservations necessary). The length of the tour is at the discretion of our visitors and can be anywhere from one to four hours in length. Please feel free to bring donations and treats for sanctuary staff as they truly appreciate it. Contact Nicole Martin at nicole@cupocity.com to make a reservation. To see our animals available for adoption, visit our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/spcapv. Go to Photos where you will also find individual Albums for all the animals available as well as a bit of their history. Puerto Vallarta seeks to assure cruise lines 3 ships canceled stops after the May 1 violence in Jalisco

O

fficials from the state of Jalisco and Puerto Vallarta met with cruise line representatives in Miami this week after three ships canceled plans to stop in the city following the violence on May 1. The Disney Wonder, Celebrity Infinity and Royal Caribbean Jewel of the Seas had been scheduled to stop in the Pacific coast destination but spent the day at sea instead. A morning of aggression by what is believed to have been the Jalisco Nueva Generación cartel, in which an Army helicopter was shot down, affected various parts of the state, including Puerto Vallarta where gas stations were set on fire. One cruise line maintained its scheduled stop, but cut back on shore excursions. Carnival Cruise

By Christina Demetro o you love romance? Whether in a long term partnership or marriage, one of the most romantic experiences you can enjoy with a loved one is a recommitment ceremony in Puerto Vallarta with officiate Marcus Fikse. Imagine a private beach or rooftop setting overlooking the sea and mountains; picture holding your lover's hands while honoring your journey together. I recently attended a heart-warming recommitment ceremony of two inspirational friends who are locals from Boca de Tomatlan named Maricarmen and Brewster Brockmann. We gathered for a beautiful sunset ceremony along the ocean, south of Los Muertos beach. Inside a circle of flowers, they encircled their two daughters in their arms. This celebration of twenty years of marriage was officiated by a very passionate and well-spoken young man named Marcus Fikse. As a traveling officiate who accepts love offerings/ donations for his services, Marcus is back in PV for Pride week and is eager to perform more ceremonies for couples wanting to recommit their love to one another.

Lines said it would continue with its scheduled calls but “in an abundance of caution” it has temporarily suspended some excursions that require travel outside the city. Carnival is the only line that currently has scheduled weekly visits. State Tourism Secretary Enrique Ramos Flores, Puerto Vallarta tourism director Oscar Pérez and Rodrigo Esponda, director of the Mexican Tourism Board for North America, attended the Miami meeting along with police representatives from Jalisco and Puerto Vallarta. A statement following the meeting said security would be enhanced to ensure that cruise lines know the whereabouts of all passengers who go ashore. The city will work with tour operators, taxi drivers and other service providers to employ new measures to keep ships informed of passengers’ locations.

An average of 65% leave the ships to explore the city unescorted. Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises, Carnival and Disney Cruises had representatives at the meeting, which also agreed to improve communications so the cruise lines are better informed about conditions in Puerto Vallarta. The events that took place May 1 “were quickly contained and resolved,” said the statement prepared by the city. ““No harm came to any residents or visitors to Puerto Vallarta and no disturbance, restriction or limits affected tourists in the area.” It described the incidents as “highly unusual” and said they have had no effect on security, tranquility and hospitality. Hotel occupancy was reported to be running at 95% on the weekend immediately following the violence. Source: mexiconewsdaily.com

Meanwhile, Mexico’s largest airline, Aeroméxico, is seeking approval for a joint cooperation agreement with Delta Air Lines. The two firms have filed an application with the Federal Economic Competition Commission for an agreement on their flights between the U.S. and Mexico. They want to offer an expanded network, enhancing routes and schedules and colocate in airports. Original: mexiconewsdaily.com

Tourism Activity in Mexico Increased 2.2% in Late 2014

T

ourism activity in Mexico increased by 2.2 percent in the fourth quarter of 2014 compared with the same period of the previous year, the National Institute for Geography and Statistics, or Inegi, said. Spending by domestic and foreign tourists was up 2 percent over the comparable span of 2013, Inegi said in a statement. Outlays by domestic travelers increased 0.7 percent, while foreign visitors spent 6.6 percent more, the report said. The 29.1 million foreign visitors Mexico received last year gene-

rated revenues of nearly $16.26 billion, a 20.5 percent increase over 2013. Tourism has become Mexico’s third-largest source of hard currency, after oil exports and remittances from expats working in the United States. Original: lath.com

Mexico Inflation Remains Stable

M

exico inflation results in April were largely in line with market expectations. Consumer prices fell 0.26% versus March, compared to market expectations of -0.24%. At the core level, prices rose 0.16%, compared to market expectations. Annual headline inflation is at 3.1%, unchanged versus March, while annual core inflation is at 2.3%, down slightly from 2.4%. April’s three month annualized headline and core inflation prints are 1.9% and 2.4%, respectively. Core merchandise inflation in the second half of April was lower, particularly ex-foods (-0.02%). This supports the central bank's view

that pass-through from peso weakness has been low. The unfavorable surprise at the core level in the second half of April was in services excluding housing and education, with a bi-weekly inflation print of 0.19%. This was driven by airfares (+5.9%) and hotels (+2.1%) even though the Easter week holidays ended in the first half of the month. Original: lath.com

Mexico Airline Route Expands Travel Options into Puerto Rico

Mexico will commemorate the National Day Against Homophobia with the progress that has been achieved through the actions of the authorities and civil organizations. Mújica added that this year there would be 20 additional state decrees combating homophobia, which is followed on the municipal level. In five states there are regularized marriages or civil unions. In 19 other states there have been equal marriages through rulings and there is an opening for the registrations for same-sex couples. Mexico City recognizes transgender people. There has been a substantial growth in this community in the past six years. In Mexico the consciousness toward sexual diversity is modernizing and will be completely accepted, Mújica states. ntra-Caribbean air service received a significant boost this week with the announcement of new direct airline service between Cancun, Mexico and San Juan, Puerto Rico aboard Mexican carrier Volaris. The new flights were announced by Ingrid I. Rivera Rocafort, executive director of the Puerto Rico Tourism Company. Weekly departures will begin July 2 and operate in Thursdays and Sundays, with connections to Mexico City. "The arrival of Volaris to Puerto Rico is part of PRTC’s efforts to expand air access to our destination,” she said. “With this achievement, we restore the direct connection of our island to Mexico, the Latin American country that sends the most visitors to Puerto Rico.” “Including Puerto Rico within the range of destinations offered

at Volaris responds to our expansion strategy in the region,” said Holger Blankenstein, Volaris’ chief commercial officer. An official at Puerto Rico’s Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport said the new flights will also impact Puerto Rico’s cruise-ship operations. “The inclusion of Volaris as part

of operations positions us as the leading destination for cruise travel in the Caribbean,” said Agustin Arellano, chief executive officer of Aerostar Airport Holdings, the airport’s management company. “With its twice-a-week operation, it undoubtedly offers the best options for the varied tourism generated in Puerto Rico.”

CANICA Breakfast Fundraiser – May 27th Urgent Need

T

he Children of CANICA (Cancer Center in Puerto Vallarta) would like to invite everyone in town to join them for breakfast on May 27th at The River Café. It will be at 9:30 a.m. and the cost is $200 pesos per person. We have four new children in the program, and they need our help. One of the children, Luis Angel an eight year old child who was an honour student was hospitalized for four months, and the cancer tumor on his head has left his left side of his body paralyzed, He has lost one eye, lost his speech, and can not move his arm.

Luis Angel, has been a very brave little boy who has been fighting to stay alive since January. He has been drinking Ensure since he lost the ability to swallow. Angelito is depending on all of us to continue helping him and his mom. This family of three children and their Mom sleep on the floor, and have no running water. The other three new children in the program are also in need of better places to live. This is a call for every one in P.V. to help these families as they have many medical needs, and we alone can not provide all the help required. Please join us and bring a bottle of Ensure for the children. On a happier note some of the

children were invited by USA CANICA to visit Disneyland, on the first of June for one week. Thanks to some very special friends who raised funds for the tickets, the children will have a chance to visit this wonderful land of make believe and we hope this experience will give them happiness and help them stay strong and not to give up on themselves, as all they have known in their short lived life is pain.... We will have a raffle during the event, to provide some funds for their meals. Please have a heart! Join us and be part of this happy experience. You can buy your tickets at The River Cafe, at Carol´s Boutique, or at Alex

Beauty Salon. For more information, please to reserve your tickets. 322-2934777, or the President of CANICA, Evelia Basañez at 322-123-5688.

My Life

in Vallarta By Lois Ellison loell87@yahoo.com

It’s Not Perfect

U

nless you’ve been living with your head buried in the sand, you’ve most likely heard about the episodes of civil unrest that occurred here on May 1st. The greatest damage to our beautiful area came, not from the handful of firebombs, but rather from inflated rumors and the intense and overly exaggerated media coverage north of the border. Here in Vallarta, things returned to normal in record time. Alas, it may take time to recover from the onslaught of bad publicity. A few cruise ship visits were cancelled and countless people began to rethink their future travel plans. Never mind that in less than ten days, the US State Department removed the travel advisory listing Puerto Vallarta. This didn’t make the nightly news. Good news doesn’t sell. One article I read stated that there was concern about an increase in the number of Americans murdered in Mexico in 2014. That number was one hundred. Does anyone worry about the number of Americans murdered in the US in 2014? At some level, yes, I’m sure they do, but no one issues travel warnings about the various hotspots. Part of the problem seems to be that when people travel, they expect everything to be perfect: excellent weather, wonderful

food and a complete absence of crime. Sort of like being in a protective bubble. On the other hand, when they are home, they more readily accept the imperfections of daily life. They lock their doors, avoid making eye contact when passing strangers, endure incredible traffic, and ignore most of the bad domestic news, except the most egregious cases of unprovoked violence. In many ways, crime becomes accepted as just another fact of life. If you are looking for perfection, there is a town in central Florida you might find appealing. The idyllic lifestyle portrayed in its ads, piqued our curiosity so while on a visit to that area several years ago we decided to check it out. Surreal is the word that comes to mind. Conceived and designed by Walt Disney to be the quintessential American town, this community is a perfect pastel world of manicured lawns, picket fences and flags. Not only does it feel like parts of Disney World, the main street actually connects to the Magic Kingdom. Driving around, you will see a squadron of gardeners with company logos affixed to their carefully pressed uniforms. Apparently facial hair is forbidden as is any deviation from the very strict dress code. You will not find a more homogeneous population anywhere. Think Stepford Wives.

Getting back to reality, Puerto Vallarta is an incredibly wonderful place to live. Here, we sleep with our patio doors, not just unlocked, but flung wide open. When we walk around town, the majority of people we pass greet us with a smile and a cheery “Buenos Dias”. It is hard, if not impossible to meet a stranger here. Local papers are full of stories of lost wallets being returned to their owners, with all the contents intact. And of cab

drivers going beyond the call of duty to help a passenger with some emergency. On the other hand, traffic is so-so and yes, driving is erratic. Beautiful villas may be right next to humble adobe cottages. Sidewalks are uneven or maybe non-existent. Electrical wires drape perilously close to passersby. Rains flood the streets in a matter of minutes, forcing you to completely change your plans for the day.

When something happens like the events of May 1st, it is all the more startling because of its rarity. There are no school shootings or attacks on movie theaters. No terrorists plotting against innocent citizens. Instead we enjoy a deep abiding tranquility, normally punctuated only by the sound of waves breaking or a burst of nightly fireworks. No, it’s not perfect but it comes awfully close.

Birthday Reflections

E

very year around my birthday I reflect on my life and try to decide if I’m on the right track. This year I realized that there are a few childhood dreams that I have yet to achieve: 1) To perform a successful cartwheel 2) To become a world famous singer with a spiral perm and outfits that always include at least three layers of pink tulle 3) To marry Corey Hart (Canadian pop star in the mid-eighties who wore his “Sunglasses At Night”) I am going to have to reluctantly admit that 1) and 3) are no longer realistic or desirable goals whatsoever. And as for 2), I didn’t take into account that fashion trends do change, and although I am often the second place winner of mother-daughter karaoke marathons at home, world famous might be a stretch. What I am is a vegetarian living in Mexico with a long-haired musician who I’ve never seen in a shirt with a collar. My parents might have been onto something, suspecting as they did that I was the child who would take a Road Less Travelled on my way to making my dreams come true. As such, these long-suffering and heart-healthy folk rarely batted an eyelash when I would make dinnertime announcements such as: “I’m selling everything I own and moving to Puerto Vallarta. Who wants my bread maker?” or, a few years later, “You are going to be grandparents! Should we go to the Roxy Rock House so you can congratulate your son-in-law between sets?” My fifteen years in Mexico reach across three decades in my life. In my twenties, there seemed to be nothing I couldn’t

do. I could change my mind about living in Mexico anytime I wanted to, because I had my whole life ahead of me. That’s right. Anytime I wanted. Probably next year. In my thirties, I felt like a cool hippie for raising my babies in a foreign country with their guitar player daddy (I kind of ignored the fact that the country was only actually foreign to me), and following my passion for teaching. Now I’m wading rather noisily into my forties. As it turns out, I’m not such a hippie anymore. I’m a soccer mom who makes sure her kids are practicing musical instruments and learning the times tables (which, coincidentally, is exactly what my very non-hippie brother is doing with his own kids in Canada, except that he has a pension plan and free medical care). So what grown up dreams have I accomplished on my meander down the weedladen trail of the nonconformist (who never got her Panasonic SD-2501 bread maker back and kind of misses it)? Let’s see here. 1) I must note on this list I have matured enough to know when to give up on a dream that is not working out. I don’t enjoy surfing no matter how hard I smile while drinking liters of salt water. I can live in a beach town and have neither will nor sufficient upper body strength to stand up on a narrow, thrashing piece of foam. 2) I have raised two children for over a decade. They are alive and relatively ok. This seems to amaze only me. And this is also amazing. 3) I trusted in love at first guitar riff. 4) I make great pie. This is also a dream come true for the male members in my family. 5) I’m living the life I chose. It’s the life I dreamed up. It’s the life I love. And that makes for a very happy birthday every single year.

t promises to be a sold out show in all the biggest cities. Front row seats will be reserved for the homeless, so I fear he will be preaching to the choir. There are however, one point two billion people in that choir, so it might make an impact. I wonder if he will have Lloyd Blankfein of Goldman Sachs as a guest speaker? Blankfein is on the record as having said, “he does God’s work.” Maybe the Pope can verify that. On the surface it’s Capitalism vs Climate Change but Pope Francis, who has been labeled the “coolest Pope”(my guess is, it has something to do with removing fornication from the sin bin) clearly is knowledgeable about financial, political, economic and cultural trends. Capitalism is at odds with global warming and protecting planet earth seriously detracts from hard earned bonuses. So I think we can see where this is heading. It is a morality tale. It is Capitalism vs Humanity. There will be a new top ten list I figure, with golden calf idolatry worship at the top, along with greed, exploitation, inequality not to mention the basic lying, cheating and stealing. That is of course my guess, as the list has not been released just yet. The first preview will be at the United Nations General Assembly in New York. Later Pope Francis will address a joint session of congress in Washington. The Vatican is worth somewhere around seven to twelve billion dollars by some estimates and they have had their share of recent financial dealings. I doubt Capitalism takes the bait on that one. They are pretty smart about who and what they choose to fight. After my last column a reader asked me, “ What is the problem with Google paying their chief financial officer seventy three million dollars?” Well it’s like this. When a corporate board decides to relieve the coffers of any business, that money does not go into other things that might grow the business, like the people and technology at the very core of that business. When a financial wizard can increase the value of the stock on a short-term basis this very often does little in the long run. The

market is fickle from day to day let alone year to year. It may very well decide that a company is not worth the price it is trading at today for any number of reasons. Rex Nutting of Market Watch has written a terrific opinion piece titled: How the stock market has destroyed the middle class. He states that share buybacks encourage executives to loot companies, stall innovation and depress wages. He explains that in the eighties, with a more competitive international landscape American companies started to shift to an ideology that anything that did not increase shareholder value was a waste of time and money. During this period most executives had a salary and a bonus. The idea was that if they made executives more like owners they would act accordingly. They have, most executives

now receive more than eighty percent of their earnings from stock options and grants. So the incentive to decrease the workforce and any unnecessary expenses in order to raise the value of the stock is overwhelming. Sometimes I can’t stand the sound of my own voice going on about these very questionable practices and what I see as a road to ruin. I fear I have become downtrodden. Then I read this from Carlos Fuentes. “Criticism is a form of optimism, when you are silent about shortcomings in society, you are pessimistic.” It made me feel better to know that in expressing my grievances I share the company of many great people before me, after me and even the Pope! I encourage you to do the same.

Mexico has an appealing culture, affordable prices and proximity to the U.S. and Canada By Kathleen Peddicord

M

exico was perhaps the original retire overseas destination for Americans, who have been relocating south of the border in retirement for decades. More than a million American and Canadian expats and retirees call Mexico home. In recent years, Mexico has been overshadowed by countries in Central and South America. These other destinations also offer appealing options for a sunny, coastal retirement on a small budget. Mexico has recently suffered some bad press, including the swine flu epidemic of 2009 that fizzled after a few cases and the drug violence in some border cities and beyond that has affected the perception of the entire country. It's true that some parts of Mexico don't belong on any retire overseas shopping list. However, it's time to take a fresh look at this old favorite. Housing markets in many areas of Mexico are depressed. The great recession took its toll in this country, especially in areas popular as second home markets, many of which still haven't recovered. Mexico isn't the uber-cheap destination it was in the 1950s and 1960s, but it's still a very affordable lifestyle option, especially at the current rate of exchange between the Mexican peso and the U.S. dollar. Today's dollar buys 15.38 pesos, making the cost of living in Mexico cheaper than it's been in a long time for anyone with dollars in his wallet. In addition, Mexico is a culturally familiar neighbor and accessible. Americans and Canadians can drive

back and forth or take a short flight Mexico is also a big country, offering many diverse retirement lifestyle choices. One particularly appealing coastal retirement option is Mazatlan. This city opened its first tourist hotel and restaurant in 1850 and has been a major international tourist destination since the 1940s. But in the 1970s, Mazatlan began to fall out of favor, as more travelers to Mexico's Pacific coast opted for its cousin city, Puerto Vallarta, some 270 miles to the south. One reason Puerto Vallarta is popular among North Americans is its excellent winter weather. From December through March, daytime temperatures hover in the high 70s, with lows in the low 60s and little to no rain. Between July and October, temperatures average around 90, with most rain falling between July and September. Puerto Vallarta and Mazatlan have got everything a retiree dreaming of a new life on the Pacific coast could hope for. Furthermore, real estate is a buyer's market. At home here, you'd have the best of both old-fashioned coastal Mexico and modern amenities, with an attractive beach nearby. The weather is brilliant, sunny and comfortable during the North American winter, but the city's rental market is active year-round. Invest in a home of your own here, and you could earn cash flow to supplement your retirement income by renting out your place when you're not using it yourself. At today's exchange rate, you could buy a modern apartment in Centro in a building with a pool and other amenities close to the beach for as little as $220,000. La Cruz de Huanacaxtle Skate Park has some cool new designs. Volunteers of all ages came to put some color on the skate park. What started as an idea last spring has now manifested into a place for the kids to play. Jason and the Mercado Huanacaxlte team (and other volunteers and folks that donated) got the ball rolling and the skate park broke ground last April, as you can see in the before and after photos. The land was cleared with machete by a local volunteer, then more volunteers of all ages came to break ground and started digging the skate park. The skate park also includes a terrific playground for the kids. This past weekend local artist of all ages brought more life to the park with vibrant bright colors. For an exact location you can use google maps by putting in this location: 20°45'27.3"N 105°22'49.5"W. The park is located on the right side (mountain side) of the hwy coming into La Cruz, and go right on Calle Atun. To find out how you can help, visit their page on Face-

Vallarta & Nayarit Make TripAdvisor’s Birding Reinforces Top 10 Mexican Beaches List Ecotourism in the Riviera Nayarit Beach selections from Travelers choice awards.

M

exico is a country with numerous beach destinations. As part of the Travelers Choice Awards 2015, TripAdvisor announced the list of the top ten beaches in Mexico, selected based on user ratings: 10.- Playa Zicatela Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca The “it” place for surf lovers, considered the best place to catch some waves in Mexico. It offers inviting accommodations, entertaining bars and charming cafés. Enjoy a magnificent sunset on this pacific coast beach. 09.- Playa Los Muertos Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco One of the most popular beaches in the bay of Puerto Vallarta. A place where activities are endless and you’ll never be bored. Additionally you can delight in some of the freshest seafood around, including lobster, shrimp and fish.

08.- Nuevo Vallarta Riviera Nayarit, Nayarit Exclusive beach destination that offer first class accommodations, golf courses, luxurious condominiums, top notch restaurants and two marinas. A beachscape of golden sand and turquoise-blue waters, perfect to relax and enjoy. 07.- Balandra Beach La Paz, Baja California Sur Impressive, beautiful and untouched beach, located in a bay-like area where the water is calm, crystal clear and in many shades of blue. A relaxing, quiet beach with amazing views that is likely to stay that way, as it is a protected natural area. 06.- Playa Delfines Cancun, Quintana Roo One of Cancun’s favorites, it has no hotels, making it the perfect beach to drift off or jump in the clear water and frolic in the waves. Although the sun sets

on the lagoon side (opposite to the beach horizon) if you stay after dark, you can appreciate the lit-up hotel zone. 05.- Paradise Beach Cozumel, Quintana Roo A fun beach for the whole family, where the kids and teens can play on inflatables, kayak and snorkel, while the parents relax and take in the gorgeous view and enjoy refreshing tropical beverages with some decent tropical nosh. 04.- Lover’s Beach Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur A beach that can only be reached by water and is totally worth it. It is located right behind the famous arch of Cabo, facing the outlet of the Sea of Cortez in the southernmost point of Baja California Peninsula. An amazing location where deep blue and turquoise waters contrast with the barren rocky desert cliffs. 03.- Akumal Beach Akumal, Quintana Roo A protected shallow bay with a secluded white sandy beach, perfect for snorkeling and admiring sea life in the vibrant coral reef. Enjoy the calm and natural ambiance, and relax on this beautiful Riviera Maya beach. 02.- Playa Norte Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo A long and calm beach in the northern point of the island, where the water is so clear, and calm you can swim with no worries. Drift off and delight in the traditional and freshly-made Tikin Xic fish – marinated and grilled in the local adobo spice known as achiote. 01.- Playa Paraíso Tulum, Quintana Roo This long white sandy beach has more than earned its name. Unparalleled turquoise waters and the softest sand are waiting for you in the number one beach of Mexico, located just a few miles away from the archeological site of Tulum. Relax, swim, snorkel and enjoy fresh seafood at local restaurants inland.

T

here are 47 million birdwatchers in the United States; this consumer segment has high purchasing power and is part of the natural market for the destination, which offers birders an ample variety of species to enjoy. With over 500 endemic and migratory species flying around its mountains and beaches, the Riviera Nayarit is an ideal spot for birding; this, together with the warm winter climate, sets the perfect stage for North American birders who are also looking to escape freezing temperatures. Ecotourism is a sales element that has set a global trend. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service published data in its Birding in the United States: A Demographic and Economic Analysis report that supported the importance of birding in the Riviera Nayarit. According to this study, which was originally published in 2011 and updated in 2013, there are 47 million birders in the United States, 18 million of whom have traveled beyond the U.S. border to follow their passion. Of these, 53% are over 45 years of age, that is to say, most of them are retirees. These people clearly mirror the characteristics of the residents of the Riviera Nayarit,

which is why the Convention and Visitors Bureau via its Public Relations Department has been strongly promoting birding to this segment in particular. However, 28% of the U.S. birders are between the 25 to 44 years old, also an important segment, one that is surely already aware of the birds that flock to the destination thanks in part to broadcasts such as the Discovery Channel programs hosted by James Currie. The analysis indicates the higher the level of income and education the more likely the birder is to participate in this activity; of the total mentioned, 48% have a career and/or a specialty and 49% have an above-average income for the United States. It’s interesting to point out that the birding population is made up of equal parts men and women, as opposed to fishing and hunting, which is mainly composed of men. At least 20% of the population of each of the four regions of the United States is made up of birders. This data was obtained via the National Survey of Fishing, Hunting, and Wildlife-Associated Recreation 2011, considered the most authoritative report on the topic.
