Valley Art is dedicated to supporting working artists and encouraging beginning artists. We exhibit exceptional artwork and offer art classes for the entire community at affordable prices.

Valley Art board meetings are held on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 6:30p.m. These meetings are open to all who might like to attend.

‘Local Treasures’­–artists, artwork–gather in Valley Art Gallery during November Valley Art members are invited to participate in our annual celebration Friday, Nov. 8, at 6:30 p.m., 2022 Main St., Forest Grove, and receive a 10-percent discount on anything current-paid members purchase that night only.

Participating Northwest artists in all media will have new work in our “Local Treasures” show —and members will get first choice.

The show will continue through Nov. 17, with special gallery hours—10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and noon to 4 p.m., Sunday.

ACRYLIC: Laura Hopper will bring mini-canvases in acrylic and multi-media and new framed watercolors. Cher Odum has new smaller framed pieces of her intriguing characters, new bowls and some small painted stools.

Maureen Welborn, Forest Grove, will have sturdy hand-woven baskets to use anywhere, anytime.

CERAMICS: Christine Hurayt will have new mugs, pitchers, vases and pancake platters and syrup sets. Dorothy Steele fashions leaf ornaments, mugs, tea cups, salt cellars and other functional pottery. Wendy Stammer, Tigard, will bring her unique work. Perhaps you have seen her wide-eyed owls. Frank Gosar, Eugene, from Off-Center Ceramics, brings his whimsical, functional pottery vessels with their paintings of chickens and rabbits and many other animals.

DRIED FLOWERS: Drying flowers well is a real art. Lyn Jacobs, Polly Gottesman and Audrey Hertel will have yesterday’s blossoms for sale. Lyn and Polly combine the flowers into wreaths and sunflower “bird feeders.”

GARDEN ART: Michelle Gallagher, of Portland, constructs “garden heads,” standing owls and other ceramic figures for the garden (and the home). Terry Powers, from Sandy, is set to bring more recycled metal outdoor art. Who knows what will be reincarnated?

GLASS: Vicki Joslyn will bring fused glass plates, coasters and other work to the gallery. Dianne Muhly will have colorful kiln-formed glass for sale.

Sarah Lundin, from Peony & Poppy Designs, will have fused glass dishes, magnets and light fixtures.

GREETING CARDS: Steve Dierickx, Forest Grove, will have his photographs on cards in the gallery

for the show. Koka Filipovic will bring her framed art, boxes, journals and handmade cards.

JEWELRY: Jim Hayes produces finely crafted silver jewelry, often with Oregon stones; Linda Hayes uses recycled bits of older jewelry and medals to make fashionable, one-of-a-kind jewelry; Lanai Kinsky makes unique colorful beaded bracelets and necklaces; Donna Berget will bring her distinctive jewelry and “trivia trays.” Diane Dow, Hillsboro, will have her earrings, necklaces and bracelets at the annual event.

METAL SCULPTURE: Fletch Grylls’ unique trees in metal will be for sale.

OIL PAINTING: Fran Richards, Forest Grove, will have oil, acrylics and perhaps some pastels in the November show. Rob Sanford, Lake Oswego, has prepared a variety of his original paintings of birds. Donna Clark, Hillsboro, has colorful, lush landscapes in oil.

ORIGAMI: Kathy Broom, Forest Grove, will have a variety of origami constructions. These always make great stocking stuffers or a unique ornament for the tree.

PASTELS: Sue Orlaske will bring small 8x10 inch pastels for the Annual Artist Event. (She will also have her sagger-fired clay pieces, including rattles and small vases.) Jane Aukshunas, Hillsboro, who works in oil pastels, will have new images for sale. Her creations featuring fields of lavender hold onto summer year ‘round.

PHOTOGRAPHY: E.J. Baeza, Forest Grove, is a photographer who loves variety.

His photos are in a medley of styles, framed or ready for framing. Brenda Somes, Forest Grove, offers her colorful, stylized photography printed on aluminum and frame tiles as well as prints ready to frame.

PORCELAIN: Rhoda Fleischman, Brownsville, will have porcelain tableware for sale, along with stoneware small sculptures. This lady is also known as “Flash.”

POTTERY: Barb Hertel, Forest Grove, makes her well-known guardian spirits and will have pots and “other things,” so be sure and see her work. Vicki Tanner, North Plains, brings her distinctive pottery cups, plates and vases. Lorraine Warren, Forest Grove, has prepared Christmas ornaments, garden suns (these are perfect for the gardener), serving platters and small soap dishes. Janet Buskirk, Portland, will have her richly colored plates, cups and bowls on hand. Reena Dodeja, Portland, has prepared her unique bowls and lidded pots for our annual show.

Eclectic pottery designs by Konky Forster will be offered for sale.

QUILTING: Beverly Lundin will bring small quilted wall hangings.

STONEWARE: High-fired work by David Hough, Roads End Pottery, requires a 15-step process to produce the colors and glazes on his goblets, wine coolers, bowls and other functional work that feature carefully brushed scenes of Oregon.

SCULPTURE: Robynn Fulfs fashions exotic, stylized horses and dogs from clay.

SILKSCREEN: Susan Curington has silkscreened her charming floral prints onto silk scarves. A perfect gift to mail to a faraway friend or family member!

WATERCOLOR: Marcella Kriebel’s work will include illustrations from her “Comida Latina” cookbook. There will also be copies of the 2nd edition of her book

on hand. Kris Preslan, Lake Oswego, is well known for her transparent watercolors of elegant automobiles. She also paints local and European scenes. Harold Walkup’s fine watercolors (and acrylics) will please the pickiest shopper and make the best gift yet.

WOODCUTS: Debby Neely brings her framed woodcuts, cards and scratchboard reproductions to the Annual Artist Event.

WOODWORK: Mickey Johnson will offer rolling pins and cribbage board boxes. Paul Rasmussen, of Tigard, will have bowls, hollow forms and holiday ornaments from a variety of wood. Gerald Sticka, Forest Grove, does carvings of fish and birds. Bruce Countryman will have wooden vessels and bowls on hand. He is also from Forest Grove. Les Dougherty brings new fine grain figured and spalted —partially decayed and then dried— maplewood bowls. Also from Forest Grove, Robert Fenimore will bring in his spirited, personalized rocking horses— handmade from base to saddlebag. These will become family heirlooms, and you don’t have to feed them.

All of these artists—and more—have produced artwork you will want to see.

Members Night is Friday, Nov. 8, at 7:00 p.m. Bring an hors d’oeuvre or bottle of wine to share and enjoy a night out with other Valley Art supporters.

Remember, the Local Treasures show will continue through Nov. 17, with special gallery hours from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and from noon to 4 p.m., Sunday.

Art Education Art Classes, Groups and Workshops for children and adults Intermediate Adult Pottery Thursdays, November 7 to December 19—6:30p.m. to 9:30p.m.

Pottery class is for adults 18-years and older. This is a shorter session due to the holidays (no class on Thanksgiving day.) Learn to hand build or throw pottery on the wheel. You could create a ceramic Christmas gift in the class for someone! A variety of clays are available with costs ranging from $12 to $16 per bag. Tool kits are available for $15.00 each. You must bring your own towel and apron. Class size is limited to 8 students with no late entries unless arranged with the instructor. Cost is $82.00 for members and $92.00 for non-members. Supplies additional.

Youth Drawing Class Fridays, Nov. 15, 22, 29, Dec. 6, 13—5:30p.m. to 7:00p.m.

For youth with self-management skills and interest in art, age 10 and up. Doodle, sketch, and decorate with pens, pencils, charcoal, oil pastels, and water soluble crayons. Explore texture, form, shape, color, line, tone and mood. Draw freehand and with compass & ruler. Learn how to create simple 3-D effects using shading, overlap, and beginning perspective. All materials provided. Sign up and get your registration form in the class binder at the gallery front desk, or contact Charlotte Lumae at charlotte.lumae@gmail.com or 971-732-4627. Bring the completed form along with payment to the first class.

Cost is $5 per meeting, or prepay $20 for all five meeting. (need-based scholarships available to cover up to 50% of the class cost.)

Drawing Lessons for Teens and Adults Saturdays, Nov. 9, 16, 23, Dec. 7, 14—9 a.m.–11a.m.

Drawing lessons will teach principles of design, proportion, accurate measurement, line, edges, and value. Beginning to intermediate skill levels (16 years old and up) Four drawing projects will be completed during the course (materials provided by the student. Contact Nick Blight at nick.blight09@gmail.com Cost is $5.00 per lesson. (need-based scholarships available to cover up to 50% of the class cost.)

Homeschool Pottery Class Tuesdays, October 22, 29, Nov. 5, 12­—10 a.m.

An introduction to clay handbuilding for elementary aged homeschool students. We will work with pinch pots, coils and slabs to make a variety of projects. Class size is limited to 10 students. Forest Grove Camera Club Wednesdays—7:30–10 p.m.

The Forest Grove Camera Club is a member of the Photographic Society of America (PSA) and the Columbia Council of Camera Clubs. The club participates in a variety of competitions, evaluations and provides programs as well as field trips. Instructor: Carol Berget cberget@msn.com Cost is $25 Annual membership / $5 student / $10 Associate membership

Quilting Studio: 101 Fridays—9 a.m.–1:30 p.m.

This is an ongoing class and may be joined at any time. All levels, from beginning to advanced are welcome. This is the time to do your own work; get expert advice on a special project; and meet with other local quilters. Join the fun!

Cost is $28/year for members and $43/year for non-members.

All events and workshops take place in the Valley Art Gallery workshop space unless otherwise noted. Valley Art is located at 2022 Main Street in Forest Grove. Parking is available along Main Street and in the public parking lot located directly behind Valley Art, a half block to the west.

Gallery hours are Monday–Saturday 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Elf Workshop. This is the Valley Art annual winter holidays art day for families. Kids of all ages are welcome to drop by accompanied by an adult.

Unaccompanied kids ages 6 and up may attend if registration and release form is completed on site by parent/guardian. Ask for the forms from the front desk class binder.

2013 Chalk Art Festival

Rain-Rain-Go-Away…That was the chant on

Saturday afternoon, September 21, during the 23rd Annual Sidewalk Chalk Art Festival. The day started out great with mild temperatures and low cloud cover.

Many people came out and created their colorful drawings before the rain made its appearance around 2:30 that afternoon. Over 340 squares were reserved; however, gloomy weather predictions during the week kept some folks from participating. All in all, the

event was a success and many wonderful photos were taken of the great art before it was washed away. Lively music was provided by Kirk Larson, Una Voz Mariachi Band and Boka Marimba. Featured artists this year were Tess O’Day (poster creator), Kat Moss, Anthony Perez, Amber Buhler and Alexis Bell. Ongoing gallery lighting transformation Valley Art is continuing with its gallery lighting upgrade. Gallery visitors have commented on the remarkable improvement the new lighting makes.

Our adopt-a-bulb campaign continues to speed the progress of this project and each bulb sponsorship is a vote of encouragement to all of us who are so excited about such a beautiful, energy-smart upgrade.

Caught my eye...

I thought for this first note from the president of the board I would introduce myself. My name is Lynne Magner and I have been on the board for the past four years and have been on the marketing committee most of that time. My husband Andy and I started Miracle Sign Co. shortly after moving to Forest Grove in 1977 and that still consumes most of our time since we now have a shop in Beaverton run

My hobbies include golf, sewing, quilting and knitting—and now with four grandkids, I am madly sewing Halloween costumes. Fun! Apple Sausage Jumble--yum!

(A piquant palate pleaser) 2 lbs. Kielbasa (sausage) 3/4 cup packed brown sugar 1-35 oz. jar chunky applesauce 1/4 cup finely chopped onion, or 1 Tbsp. dried onion flakes 1. Cut sausage into ½ inch pieces.

2. Combine sugar, applesauce, and onion in an oven-proof casserole.

3. Mix in sausage pieces; bake.

4. Transfer to a chafing dish or fondue pot at serving time.

Temperature: 325 degrees Time: 1½ to 2 hours

For Members Night, all members planning to enjoy the party are asked to bring an appetizer or bottle of wine. I know a bottle of nice wine is easier, but last year a little more food would have been great. We always ask for finger food, as we don’t have the facility for more involved dishes. We have been including easy recipes in the last several newsletters and all cookbooks have a chapter on them. If you find

something that sounds good try it, first tries are usually very successful.

Many thanks to those of you who regularly contribute food to First Wednesdays and to Artist Receptions (the next one is in January.)
