Morgan had a doctor testify that liquid that is 190 degrees will deliver third degree burns within three seconds, while liquid that’s 20 degrees cooler will deliver burns within 12 seconds.

• But the tide really turned in Stella Liebeck’s favor when Morgan showed evidence that over 700 people had been scalded by McDonald’s coffee over the previous ten years, and McDonald’s had still refused to turn the temperature down.

• After a ten day trial, the jury ruled in favor of Liebeck, who had only wanted her medical expenses covered. McDonald’s was fined $2.7 million, which amounted to two days’ worth of income from coffee sales for the corporation. Of that, Stella Liebeck received about $600,000.

To my great joy, I was recently charged with the task of selecting a puppy for a 23-year-old kindergarten teacher friend of mine. She told me exactly what she was looking for in terms of energy and personality, and she described for me her dayto-day lifestyle -- both personal and professional -and the kinds of activities she’d like to do with her dog.

She had done her research and given a lot of thought to the breed of dog she wanted. Her tastes fall squarely in the middle of the size spectrum -- ruling out any breeds that are excessively big or small. She wasn’t looking for a guard dog or a show dog or a couch potato. She knew she wanted a companion dog -- playful, smart and energetic.

After weighing all her options, she discovered the Labradoodle. Deemed a “designer breed,” these Labrador-poodle mixes are wonderful dogs.

But breed is not a surefire path to personality.

Within the scope of any breed of dog lies an array of personality types. In fact, within a single litter of dogs is an array of personality types.

My friend located a Labradoodle breeder who had a litter of five puppies, all 7 weeks old.

This is where I come in.

As I arrived at the breeder’s house prepared to give an assortment of personality tests to five pups, I found myself laughing. I sure hope these tests work!

The tests involve observing the dogs’ reactions to a number of things: my presence, my voice, the sound of foreign objects (in this case, keys being tossed to the ground), my touch (varying pressure to different parts of the body, including sensitive parts like the paws, the tail and the back, to determine pain tolerance) and my hand moving toward and around the face and head.

Each of the five dogs -- same breed, same litter -- had his own individual reaction to each test.

This just confirmed what I already knew: Every dog has his own personality.

A large study of 14,000 participants conducted by the University of Cambridge over a period of 13 years measured and assessed diet, alcohol consumption, body mass index, occupation -- and physical activity levels -- and compared those with the mortality risks from various conditions.

Here’s what researchers discovered: Those who were sedentary and remained sedentary had a higher risk of mortality. However, those who started with low activity levels but increased them had additional longevity benefits.

Specifically, the risk of death decreased 24% for a low increase in activity, 38% for a medium increase, and 42% for a high increase in activity.

In other words, even if we’ve been very sedentary over a long period, becoming more active lowers our mortality risk.

By Social Security Rumor Mill

Not a week goes by when I don’t get emails, such as the one here, from veterans who have been led to believe that they are missing out on extra Social Security benefits allegedly payable to people who served in the military:

“Tom: I’ve been told that as a veteran, I should be getting an extra $120 per month added to my Social Security check. They said all I have to do is take my DD 214 (military discharge papers) down to my local Social Security office and they will start paying me the extra money. What can you tell me about this?”

As is so often the case with these rumors, there is a tiny kernel of truth to the story. But then false information takes over and things get blown way out of proportion.

Here are the facts: If you were in the military anytime up until 2001, the government may add a small amount of additional earnings to your Social Security record. And note that I am NOT talking about extra money added to your Social Security check. These are simply extra earnings incorporated into your Social Security earnings record -- the earnings record upon which your Social Security monthly benefit is based.

So the good news is you get these extra earnings put on your Social Security account. But the bad news is these extra credits are relatively minimal and usually will have little or no effect on the eventual amount of your Social Security check.

And you also need to know that these extra earnings are automatically added to your Social Security account. There is nothing you need to do to get the extra credits.

Now let’s back up and give a little more information about military service and Social Security. If you served on active duty or active duty training in the military service any time after 1956, you paid Social Security taxes on your earnings just like anyone else working at a job covered by Social Security. And since 1988, inactive duty in the armed forces reserves, such as weekend drills, has also been covered by Social Security. That’s the simple part.

What leads to all the confusion is that Congress decided to add extra earnings credits to the Social Security records of military personnel. And the amount of those credits varies depending on the time served.

If you were in the military between 1957 and 1977, the government adds $300 to your Social Security records for each calendar quarter in which you received active duty basic pay.

From 1978 through 2001, the government adds an extra $100 to your Social Security account for each $300 you earned in basic pay, up to a maximum of $1,200 per year. There are times when these extra credits aren’t granted. For example, if you enlisted after Sept. 7, 1980, and didn’t complete your full tour of duty, you won’t get the extra credits. Check with the Social Security Administration for more exceptions.

Beginning in 2002, the government stopped adding extra credits to Social Security records for military service.

Any New Treatments for Essential Tremor?

DEAR DR. ROACH: About five years ago, I came down with essential tremor. I have tried many medicines. Currently, I’m taking propranolol and primidone, but nothing seems to help. The only thing that stops the shaking is a glass of wine. I have inquired about a laser procedure, but I found out that it’s risky. An MRI was normal. I am 82 and in excellent health. I would like to know if there is anything new to help me. -- J.M. ANSWER: A lot of people have essential tremor -- 5 percent of people worldwide. It causes a noticeable tremor, usually of the hands and arms, but also may affect the head or other body parts. The severity is variable. Some people will be annoyed by symptoms, while others have real difficulty eating or writing.

An expert sometimes is needed to confirm the diagnosis, as it can appear to be similar to Parkinson’s disease or other neurological conditions. However, improvement with alcohol is suggestive of essential tremor. Unfortunately, alcohol is not a good long-term treatment, as people build tolerance.

Propranolol is a beta blocker, and primidone is an anti-epilepsy drug. They are the most common pharmacologic treatments for essential tremor. You probably have tried gabapentin and topiramate, two other anti-epilepsy drugs that work for some people but may have significant side effects.

My first patient to go through ultrasound treatment for essential tremor did so a few months ago. This uses many focused ultrasound beams to heat an area of the brain called the thalamus, destroying the cells responsible for the tremor. This procedure is effective for most people, but it can have side effects, including weakness, gait disturbance and numbness. It is not clear how long the relief will last. It is an option for people whose symptoms are significantly interfering with their quality of life and who have not gotten good relief from medications. Medicare is starting to approve payment

DEAR DR. ROACH: On three separate occasions, I experienced a very audible highpitched sound in my left ear, and immediately, without other warning, fell to the floor. One time I injured myself enough to require treatment from the emergency room. These happen without warning. Do you have any insight on the sounds and the falls that follow?

-- R.C. ANSWER: Two concerns come immediately to mind; one is serious, the other not. The first is a simple faint, also called “vasovagal syncope.” Occasionally a faint is preceded by a loud rushing sound, although it usually is experienced in both ears. It’s a warning sign to sit down immediately -- that often can prevent the faint from happening. However, nearly everybody with a faint has some lightheadedness, so I am not 100 percent sure of this possibility.

The second possibility is both rarer and more concerning. The blood vessels in the back of the skull can be compressed or made abnormal due to tumors, abnormalities in the bone and aneurisms. Some of these can be associated with sudden loss of consciousness, often with no warning. This deserves an immediate evaluation from your regular doctor or a neurologist, perhaps even an MRI scan.

Honor Flights Needs Our Help

The number of World War II veterans topped 16 million during the war. Now there are fewer than half a million still alive, all in their 80s and 90s. We’re losing over 300 WWII veterans each day. Most of them have never seen the memorial in Washington, D.C., that was built in their honor.

Honor Flights Network, a nonprofit, works to change that. Since 2010, it has escorted 222,133 veterans to see the memorial, at no cost to the veteran. Last year HFN took 21,000 veterans to Washington. The one-day trips leave from a “hub” in most states and fly to Washington, where they visit the memorial dedicated to them, as well as the Vietnam and Korean memorials. These trips are scheduled multiple times a year.

But it takes money and volunteers (guardian escorts) to pull it off, and there are over 38,000 veterans on a wait list. We’re running out of time to get all the vets to Washington who want to go.

There are programs set up to help more veterans get there. The Solo program is for those

Vintage Canister Set Was Made in Germany Q:

I was given the ceramic canister set seen in this photo almost 30 years ago.

All 12 pieces are decorated with a geometric, blue design against a white background. Each container is marked “Made in Germany.” Despite the age of the set, it is in mint condition.

What can you tell me about its age and value?

They can be recognized by their green plumage, blue-purple hood, red wattle and long, gray tail. Japanese cherry blossoms represent the beginning of spring and remind people to enjoy the present moment.

Chairman Mao Zedong launched his cultural revolution in 1966 in China. He established his Red Guards -- organized groups of urban youth whose goal was to search for those who didn’t agree with Zedong. It was a time of anarchy and treachery. Intellectuals, traditionalists and educators were sought out, punished and often killed.

The death of Zedong in 1976 brought the beginning of the downfall of his regime. The effect of the Chinese Cultural Revolution had a limited impact on the Japanese.

Your plates were made sometime between 1891 and 1921 -- a long time before the terror of the Chinese Cultural Revolution. Your set of porcelain plates would probably be worth $75 to $125.

"Nippon" is the Japanese word for Japan.

Your canister set was made in the early 1900s in Germany. Most similar sets were made from the 1920s to 1930s. Many of these sets were decorated with blue, geometric patterns, windmills or ships. They were made in Germany or Czechoslovakia and often without a maker’s mark.

Your set would probably be worth $50 to $100. *** This mark is on the back of a porcelain plate that has two smaller, matching plates and was given to me by my cousin. The large plate is about 9 inches in diameter, and the two smaller ones are 7 inches in diameter; all are in ver y good condition.

She told me they were a gift to our grandmother from a friend who purchased them when she traveled to Japan in the early 1900s.

Each plate is decorated with a pheasant, cherr y blossoms and branches against a dark blue background. The birds have green plumage and long tails.

We would like to know if they predate Mao Zedong and his communist revolution.
