• It’s likely that nearly every child in America has at some time received a ball-shaped lollipop from the bank teller. These little pops, known as Dum Dums, have been around since 1924 when they were introduced by the Akron Candy Company. Sales manager I.C. Bahr named the lollipop, figuring “Dum Dum” was a word any child could say.

• Seven original flavors of the Dum Dum were introduced, with many added and some eliminated over the years, including the famous “Mystery Flavor.” The Mystery Flavor changed regularly since it was a blend of the tail end of one batch and the beginning of the next.

The mixture of the two made it a challenge to identify what flavors you were tasting!

Nile Virus had been reported, leading to 65 deaths.

Although cases have been reported in 49 states (all but Nevada), five states (Texas, Mississippi, South Dakota, Louisiana and Mississippi) account for 68 percent of the total cases.

The next few weeks look particularly bleak because the highest incidence of infection occurs in late August and September. The actual number of infections is much greater than that reported, as only 20 percent of patients infected with the West Nile Virus develop symptoms. These symptoms occur three to 15 days after being bitten, and include fever, headache, generalized muscle aches, enlarged lymph nodes and occasionally a rash on the trunk of the body.

About 1 percent of infected patients develop inflammation of the brain and spinal cord. Of these patients, 10 percent will die. Symptoms of brain inflammation include neck stiffness, confusion, headache, visual loss, convulsions, numbness and weakness of limbs. Those who survive often have permanent neurological problems. Sadly, there is no known treatment.

West Nile Virus infections tend to be more serious in the very old, the very young and those with a compromised immune system due to illness or medications used to treat rheumatoid arthritis or cancer.

While West Nile Virus is making headlines, tickborne infections, including Rocky Mountain spotted fever and Lyme disease, are much more prevalent.

Fleabites can transmit a number of serious diseases, the most common of which is cat scratch disease. And flies that have been exposed to contaminated plant or animal products can transmit infections to people, causing gastroenteritis, upper respiratory infections and urinary infections.

As insect-borne infections are so common, we must do all we can to avoid insect bites. Many communities throughout the country are attempting to reduce the mosquito population by using aerial spraying helicopters. This has led to some opposition by those who believe the potential adverse effects of spraying outweigh the benefits.

While the CDC does state that spraying is the least effective way to control the insect populations, the risks to the general public are small. Humans and their pets should avoid direct contact with aerial spray, which has been shown, albeit rarely, to cause asthma, cough and an occasional skin rash.

More important than spraying is what we individually can do to reduce the risk of being bitten by an infected insect. When outdoors, always use an insect repellent that contains an EPA-registered active ingredient. The most common, DEET, does not kill, but repels, insects.

Because DEET is directly applied to human skin, its potential toxicity has been extensively studied. Virtually no adverse effects have been reported. Some environmentally conscious individu-

If the topic is totally foreign to you or over your head, you might want to just keep the other person talking by simply saying, “That’s interesting, tell me more,” or “That’s a good question. I never thought about that.” It is never wise to try contributing anything just to be talking. It’s far better in this case to either admit your ignorance on the subject, or just simply keep your mouth shut.

I have enclosed the mark on the bottom of a porcelain plate that my great-grandfather gave my great-grandmother around 1920.

The plate is decorated with pastel flowers and green leaves against a white background. It is 12 inches in diameter, has handles and gold trim. It is in mint condition.

He’s only 30 years old. I bet he comes back, and if he doesn’t, something tells me he’ll find a different line of work. For those of us in the post-game business, he’ll be sorely missed. Rarely has an athlete been more forthcoming at a press conference.

Hey Andy, you just lost at Indian Wells to an inferior player and said your confidence was shot ... can you elaborate?

“It comes from playing like s**t. Why would I feel confident right now? If that was the case, I don’t think we’d be sitting here having this funerallike press conference. It’s just weird because, I used to hit for a half-hour and then go eat Cheetos the rest of the day ... come out and drill forehands.

OLD TIME CANDY (from page page 3) • Back in the late 1800s, an Ohio physician Dr. Edward E. Beeman marketed a gum of pepsin powder and chicle, designed to aid digestion.

Legendary test pilot Chuck Yeager made Beemans gum famous by chewing a stick before every flight for good luck. In fact, the antacid qualities of pepsin made the gum popular with pilots for reducing stomach agitation in flight.

• Clove gum was first manufactured in 1914 by Thomas Adams. Legend has it that the gum grew in popularity during Prohibition because its strong smell masked the odor of illegal alcohol on the breath.

• The Beech Nut Company launched Fruit Stripe gum in the 1960s with a zebra as its product icon, packaged in zebra-striped wrappers. It was the only gum with stripes, which were added on after the gum was made. The down side of Fruit Stripe was that it quickly lost its flavor. It has now been re-introduced, and the complaint is the same -- It’s pretty much flavorless after only about five minutes of chewing.

• Chicago’s Williamson Candy Store produced and sold chocolate in the 1920s. One of their young customers named Henry frequently hung around the establishment flirting with the girls that made candy. He became so much of a fixture around the store that before long, employees were asking him to run errands and do little odd jobs. Soon the words, “Oh, Henry, could you do this?” and “Oh, Henry, will you bring me that?” became a very familiar sound.

When they developed a new chocolate covered confection to sell made with peanuts, fudge and carmel, it was decided unanimously to name the new creation “Oh Henry!” ■

Sand shots made simple Playing a shot from the sand can be anything but a day at the beach, but it doesn’t have to be a bad experience if you work on a few basic steps.

The first thing to look for in the bunker is the firmness of the sand, and your footprints are the first clue. Shallow prints mean firm sand and a lively ball; deep prints mean soft sand and a cushioned hit needing more power.

In order to control the distance the ball flies from the sand you must be aware of two things: Length of the swing: Tour players have what I call a “designated swing area in the sand.

Once you have established these elements, you can plug in a variety of clubs to control the distance the ball flies from the sand.

Short shots need a lob or a sand wedge; for longer shots go with a pitching or approach wedge.

Work on these techinques to find what works best for you and you’ll end up making those difficult sand shots a “day at the beach”.

Those with nosto-phobia, a fear of returning home, may be able to contribute their panic to a specific incident.

• People who are afraid of looking into mirrors have cataptrophobia, while those with cyberphobia have a fear of working with computers. A person with an anxiety about memories is a mnemophobe.

• Don’t confuse levophobia, the fear of objects to a person’s left, with dextrophobia, the fear of objects to the right.

• Although some of us fear the possibility of cancer, an extreme carcinophobe will convince himself he has cancer because he touched someone who has it.
