• It should be no surprise that pepperoni is the nation’s favorite topping, added to some 36% of all pizzas ordered. That totals about 251,770,000 lbs. of pepperoni sliced every year. Our least favorite topping is anchovies. About 14% of the population likes thick crust pizza, while 61% prefers the thin crust variety. The remaining 25% want their crust served extra thin. • There are more than 61,000 pizzerias in the United States. Over 9,000 of those are in New York alone. About 17% of all the restaurants in America are pizzerias. • Where did pizza originate? That goes back several hundred years to Italy, where it was created as a way to use up leftovers. Without any kind of refrigeration to preserve perishables, women would roll out dough in a sheet, add the leftover meal scraps, then bake it as a flat pie to be eaten PIZZA: Turn to page 3

The highest-grossing single-unit independent pizzeria in the U.S., Moose’s Tooth Pub and Pizzeria, is in Anchorage, Alaska. Its annual sales are approximately $6 million.
In 1975, the Domino Sugar Company, which had been in business since 1799, fliled a lawsuit against Domino’s Pizza claiming that the company name was an infringement on their trademark. But a federal court in 1980 ruled that no such infringement existed and the Pizza chain could continue using the name.

• Pizza Hut’s first ad back in 1965 slogan “Putt Putt to the Pizza Hut.” A in a business suit driving his 1965 Mustang was the star of the ad. Over the years Donald and Ivana Trump, Ringo Starr, The Monkees, and even former USSR President Mikhail Gorbachev have appeared in Pizza Hut ads.
• Pizza Hut may be the largest pizza chain with the most restaurants, but it’s not the leader in delivery. That honor belongs to Domino’s, who has nearly 11,000 stores in more than 70 countries, delivering more than a million pizzas every day. Domino’s started out with one store in 1960, when Tom Monaghan and his brother James borrowed $900 to buy DomiNick’s, a pizzeria in Ypsilanti, Michigan. The following year, James traded his half of the company for a Volkswagen Beetle. In 1965, Tom renamed his store Domino’s Pizza. By 1978, there were 200 restaurants. In 1983, the company opened not only its 1,000th store, but its first international outlet as well, in Winnipeg, Canada. • Less than half of Domino’s pizzerias are located in the U.S. -- about 5,000 out of 11,000. The U.K. is home to 774, India has 715, Mexico totals 592, and Canada has 380. • Now estimated as the third largest pizza company, Little Caesars Pizza got its start in Garden City, Michigan in 1959. After Detroit Tigers’ shortstop Mike Illitch was injured, he and his wife Marian went into the pizza

● It was British Prime Minister Winston Churchill who made the following sage observation: “A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its pants on.” ● Play-Doh was originally marketed as a wallpaper cleaner. It wasn’t until kids started using it as modeling material that the company saw its potential in the toy market. ● Those who study such things say that when bears, squirrels and other mammals hibernate, the flow of oxygen to their brains can drop by as much as 98 percent. ● You’ve surely heard of the long-distance buses known as Greyhounds, but you might not be aware of the company’s humble origins. In 1914, a car dealer named Carl Eric Wickman ran a car dealership in Minnesota. When business was slow, he used one of the unsold cars to offer rides between the towns of Alice and Hibbing to miners going to work. The idea was so profitable that Wickman opened long-distance routes within two years. He painted the vehicles gray in order to hide the road dust, prompting a hotel owner along one route to comment that the cars looked like greyhound dogs. Wickman liked the idea so much he started using the slogan “Ride the Greyhounds.” The rest is history. ● In 1955, just a few weeks before he was killed in a car crash, actor James Dean made a commercial aimed at teenagers. The subject? Auto safety. In the ad he says, “Drive safely. The life you save may be mine.” ● If you’re like the average American, you drink only one-sixth as much wine as the average French citizen. *** Thought for the Day: “I’m living so far beyond my income that we may almost be said to be living apart.” -- E.E. TIME TO DO THE
LAUNDRY
We’re about to air the dirty laundry about dirty laundry! Here’s the dirt on everybody’s not-sofavorite chore. • The word “laundry” has is origins in the Latin word Lavanda, which translates “things to be washed.” We also get our word “lavatory” from the same root, which meant “a place to do washing.” • The average family does 8 to 10 loads of laundry weekly, about 50 lbs. worth. Each load contains about 16 items, with an average time for completion from start to finish of one hour and 27 minutes. • Where do people do their laundry these days? Back in 1992, just 17% of homes had a separate laundry room. Today that figure is nearing 60%. The dark and dreary basement laundry room is also becoming a thing of the past, as over 60% of new laundry rooms are being built on upper floors. • The first hand-operated washing machine came along in the mid-1800s. It consisted of a revolving wooden drum turned by hand. It was later updated to include pegs and gears to push clothes through soapy water.

Training for Aggressive Dogs and Their Owners
Created by Tom Underwood
The bulk of my time is devoted to helping aggressive dogs and their owners. Their stories tend to begin something like this: My dog is wonderful 99.9 percent of the time, but he bites. The behavior is getting worse, and I don’t know what to do. I love my dog very much. The following letter is a perfect example of this dilemma: We adopted a trained hunting dog two years ago. I love this dog more than anything; however, he has bitten us on multiple occasions and recently bit my face rather viciously. I cannot trust him. The issue isn’t guarding or a lack of discipline or attention. Every day, I walk him, play with him, give him affection, feed him, have him do tricks and have him listen to me when I tell him to do things. He is sweet, affectionate and well-behaved 98 percent of the time (not an excuse, just explaining his general temperament). I think whatever issues he has are deep-rooted psychological ones. I am not sure what to do, but we cannot have a dog that hurts my husband or me. Please help. Here’s what you can do at this point in the game: ■ Find a more experienced owner for the dog. ■ Become a more experienced owner yourself with the help of a professional trainer who specializes in canine aggression. ■ Limit the dog’s exposure. Simple as that. Those are your options. A lot can be done to help an aggressive dog “get over it.” And the sooner you recognize and accept the problem the better for all involved, especially the dog. The problem is that people do not want to accept. They either do not recognize the red flags their dog is waving, or they choose to ignore them. And animals do warn us. They aren’t cunning. They aren’t

Living Arrangement Their Choice Q:
Taking daily walks has definite health benefits, but the answer to the best method really depends on the individual’s preference and abilities. Daily walks are good for blood circulation and muscle strengthening as well as getting us out of the house for some fresh air. We’re limited only by our own abilities and our doctor’s recommendations. Jogging or running burns more calories, but the impact is harder on your feet and joints. It also shortens your exercise time, if that is a consideration. I know many people who have daily routines of walking their dog around the neighborhood. This not only provides good exercise but it’s also a great way to meet people and make new friends. Studies have shown that walking styles do not make much of a difference. Choose what you can do, and appreciate what you are able to do. For my walks, my choice is a combination of both walking and jogging. Exercise itself has been proven to extend lives. Take advantage of it while you can!

Q:
I have a question about a Red Wing potter y vase my mother found in an old house in 1934. It was dirty, but in perfect condition. It stands 12 inches tall, 6 inches wide and is decorated with a branch that has 7 leaves against a white glazed background. The inside is blue-green. How much do you think it’s worth? by Anne McCollam
Dinnerware Is Vintage American Beauty Q:
Please help me out. I have sent you a photo of a coffee pot, a plate, and salt and pepper shakers. All I know is my mother got this when I was ver y young. Each piece is marked “American Beauty -- Stetson.” They are in mint condition, and I plan to hand the set down to my daughter. I would like to have more information on the maker, vintage and value of my set.
A:
Red Wing Pottery was founded in Red Wing, Minn., in 1878. In the beginning, they made utilitarian ware that included crocks, stoneware jugs and canning jars. In the 1920s they introduced their art pottery lines. They also produced dinnerware. Red Wing Pottery closed operations in 1967. Your vase would probably be worth $75 to $125. * * *
Julius Dressler was located in Bohemia.

Q:
This mark is on the bottom of a potter y vase that I have. The vase stands a little over 5 inches, is decorated with a matte blue glaze and has handles. Around the widest part of the vase are light blue flowers and green leaves with intertwining vines. Anything you can tell me about my vase will be greatly appreciated.
A:
Julius B. Dressler made your vase around 1910. They made porcelain and earthenware in Biela, Bohemia, from 1900 to 1945. Much of Dressler’s work was influenced by the Art Nouveau and the Secessionist movements. It can be recognized by curvilinear lines and scrolling flowers and vines inspired by nature. Stetson China Company was founded in 1919.
Q:
Stetson China Company began as a dec orating and distributing firm in 1919. It was a family business, and they were located in Chicago, Illinois. In 1946, Joseph Stetson purchased the Illinois China Company that was located in Lincoln, Illinois, and the name became Stetson China Company. Rather than using decals, they outlined designs and then finished it by hand painting. Many of their wares were sold in department stores, and some were made as premiums for the Procter and Gamble Company. They also made earthenware that was decorated with decals and used as premiums for grocery stores. “American Beauty” is the name of the pattern of your set, which is trimmed in 22 karat gold. Knee Highs
Keep the body weight left sided during the entire process. It’s helpful to finish the chip stroke with even a slightly lower clubhead height than achieved on the backstroke. Be firm with the lead wrist through impact preventing a high follow through. Knee high and hold can be a great mantra for your stroke shape on these shots.
