can fit through a small space since their whiskers are approximately the same width as their body. They typically have about 24 whiskers on their muzzle, 12 on each side.

Cats (from page one) more than have been found at any other location on the planet. • Most of the different breeds of cats were developed starting in the 1960s. The hairless Sphynx descended from two cats from Minnesota named Dermis and Epidermis who were mutants born in the 1970s. The Scottish fold cat, with bent ears, was bred from a mutant that appeared in a litter in Scotland 1961. The short legged dwarf Munchkin descended from a pregnant stray found in Louisiana in the 1980s. The Manx and Cornish Rex were likewise products of mutations. Other breeds, including the Norwegian forest cat and the Persian, developed after being isolated in an ecosystem and being subjected to natural selection. FELINE FEATURES

• All cat species are what is known as “hypercarnivores” eating pretty much nothing other than meat. They have no molars for chewing plants and all of their teeth are pointy and sharp, ideal for killing and cutting. Cats need three times as much protein in their diets as dogs, except for kittens who need four times that amount.

By Samantha Weaver

* It was Samuel West, the founder and curator of Sweden’s Museum of Failure (which showcases disasters in design and innovation), who made the following sage observation: “Each failure is uniquely spectacular, while success is nauseatingly repetitive.” * Those who study such things say that the earth is more flattened at the South Pole than the North Pole. The weight of all that ice is to blame. * Clams can live for more than 200 years. * You know what a mortgage is, but do you know how the word came to the English language? The “mort” should give you a clue. The roots trace all the way back to a Latin term meaning “death pledge.” * The reason for the correlation is not clear, but some studies suggest that hay fever is more common among people who are shy. * Judge Roy Bean was a justice of the peace in Texas in the 1800s -- he called himself “The Law West of the Pecos.” It’s interesting to note, though, that his earlier endeavors included rustling cattle in Mexico.

10 Things That Should Never Go in the Dishwasher Everyday CHEAPSKATE

Without a doubt, my least favorite house® hold chore is hand-washing dishes. That makes by Mary my dishwasher the Hunt one appliance I can’t live without. I love it. In fact, I have this motto that if it can’t go in the dishwasher, I don’t need it. Despite all my efforts, I still end up having to hand-wash a few things. I learned the hard way there are certain items that should never go in a dishwasher. They can be ruined, or they can ruin your dishwasher. The following ten items should always be hand-washed instead: WOOD I am amazed how well I can fit wood cutting boards, bowls and utensils into my dishwasher. But what am I thinking? The bottom line is that water causes wood to swell and warp into weird shapes. Detergent strips it of its natural oils, causing wood to crack. Wood needs to be hand-washed and towel dried quickly. When you need to disinfect, a mild solution of one gallon of cool water -- 70° F -- plus one teaspoon of liquid bleach will do the trick.

* A famous and oft-quoted line from CAST-IRON COOKWARE Sherlock Holmes is “How often have I said Skillets and pans made of cast-iron are to you that when you have eliminated the awesome. readers who wished they’d never done this. High heat and harsh detergent are tantamount to sandblasting that delicate, gold, metallic trim, as well as the finish and the image colors. You might get away with it once, but why push your luck? Always hand-wash vintage china, especially those pieces that may have been repaired. Glue melts. ALUMINUM Putting aluminum anything through the dishwasher causes the aluminum to oxidize, which causes black stains and, eventually, pitting. Here’s the rule: Never put anything made of aluminum in the dishwasher. Hand-wash only. CRYSTAL Delicate crystal is no match for the rigors that go on inside a dishwasher. You’ll learn this when you notice chipping along the rim. Lead crystal will become cloudy and pitted because harsh detergents will permanently etch the surface of what used to be clear and sparkly. Always hand-wash crystal -- carefully. COPPER Copper pans and mugs for Moscow mules are classic and beautiful but require a lot of extra effort to keep looking gorgeous. The chemicals in dishwasher detergents are too harsh for copper and will immediately dull the finish. Worse, the rigors of automatic dishwashing will corrode and cause the copper to pit. SNAP-ON LIDS There are lots of brands of plastic containers with hinged, snap-on lids. Snapware is one. Have you noticed that over time the lids stop snapping? Uh-huh ... the dishwasher. If you want them to keep performing as well as they did when new, hand-wash only. Sorry. PAINTED GLASSWARE Right now I am thinking of my beloved two-cup Pyrex measuring cup. It served me well for many years, having made hundreds of trips through the dishwasher. Recently, I realized I could no longer read any of the measurements. The paint had slowly disappeared at the hands -- I mean, spray arms -- of my dishwasher! STERLING SILVER Yes, there is a way that you can put silver flatware in the dishwasher without causing harm, but the process is tedious. One slip-up will make you wish you’d never tried. The one exception is hollow-handle knives. Never, ever put knives that have a hollow handle in the dishwasher. The high heat of a dishwasher together with the detergent will melt the glue that holds the blade to the handle -- a heartbreaking situation you want to avoid at all costs. LABELS If it has a label -- paper, decal, plastic, painted -- it should not go into the dishwasher. Dishwashing will degrade and eventually ruin it, and if it’s made of plastic or paper, expect it to end up all gooey in the filter and, eventually, in the dishwasher pump. Now you’re looking at a big repair bill that could have been prevented. * * * Mary invites questions, comments and tips at EverydayCheapskate.com, “Ask Mary a Question.” This column will answer questions of general interest, but letters cannot be answered individually. A:

Hopefully you have contacted a local company that offers a great solar panel like SunPower. If so, they will come to your home to take a look at your roof and other aspects of your home, as well as review your last 12 months of energy usage to determine how many and where to place your solar panels. A local company will also be familiar with any HOA and city guidelines. Then you will have proposals presented to you and can decide if you want to move forward. Renova Energy is an award-winning local company founded a decade ago that designs and installs commercial and residential solar and advanced battery systems. Solar consultants will answer all your questions and help you decide if solar is right for you - not pressure you into buying a system.

Food Assistance Programs Can Help Seniors in Need DEAR SAVVY SENIOR: I would like to find out if my 73-year-old aunt is eligible for food stamps or any other type of food assistance program. It seems that she has a difficult time affording enough food each month, and I would like to help if I can. What can you tell me? -- Searching Niece

In addition to the net income requirement, a few states also require that a senior’s assets be below $3,500, not counting their home, retirement or pension plans, income from SSI or TANF, and vehicle (this varies by state). Most states, however, have much higher asset limits or they don’t count assets at all when determining eligibility.

Dear Searching: Sadly, millions of older Americans, like your aunt, struggle with food costs. According to a recent study by Feeding America, 5.5 million U.S. seniors age 60 and older are food insecure. Fortunately, there are several programs that may be able to help. Here’s what you should know: SNAP Benefits While there are millions of seniors who are eligible for food stamps, less than 40 percent actually take advantage of this benefit. Food stamps are now referred to as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP. However, your state may use a different name. For seniors to qualify for SNAP, their net income must be under the 100 percent federal poverty guidelines. So, households that have at least one-person age 60 and older, or disabled, their net monthly income must be less than $1,041 per month for an individual or $1,410 for a family of two. Households receiving Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) are also eligible. TUES., APRIL 24

Clock Stands the Test of Time Q:

This is a photo of an antique keywind brass clock that has been in my family for several generations. It stands at about 10 inches tall, has beveled glass on all four sides and both the front and back can be opened. The face is porcelain and is marked with the letter “A” in a square and has Roman numerals. On the lower portion of the face are the words “Manufactured by Ansonia -New York -United States of America.” Also on the back are the words “Ansonia -- New York.” It is an eight-day clock and Ansonia brass clock was made strikes on the in New York. hour and the half-hour. I have the original key, and it is in good working condition. Our clock has sur vived all these years, and I would never part with it, but I would like to know more about its histor y and value.

A:

Myott Son and Co. made your dishes. The pottery was founded by brothers Ashley and Sydney Myott in 1898. They were located in Staffordshire, England. Based on your description, your dishes are examples of Myott’s Chelsea Bird pattern. In 1949, a devastating fire destroyed their pattern books and records. Twenty years later, an American corporation bought the pottery. In 1976, they merged with Alfred Meakin Ltd. They were bought out by Melton Modes and subsequently were taken over by the Churchill Group. Your dessert set was made around 1930 and might be worth $100 to $150. * * *

Fred Funk led the tour in driving accuracy for years with a swing secret that may benefit hundreds of golfers who don’t play as frequently as some. When you don’t have time to hit hundreds of drives on the range, or play three to four times a week, Fred’s Flat Wristed system should be great for you. With a slightly strong left hand grip and a little press of the driver, Fred favors having a potentially closed clubface at the top of the swing. Upon reaching the top, his left wrist has flattened along with a fairly flat left arm position relative to his shoulders. By trying to copy Funk’s flat wristed, closed clubface position at the top, the forward swing requires little timing or thought in hitting it with a slight draw. Inaccurate drivers tend to have an open clubface that they are ADVERTISING trying to square or close thoughPROOF impact. Fred FunkDUE: never had to worry about that!5:00 Final Changes
