• In the mid-1300s, King Charles V ordered the transformation of the fortress into a royal residence. Its interior was filled with tapestries, ornate paneling, and art, while elaborate gardens were created in the courtyard. Two kings called it home until 1422, when it was abandoned for over 100 years.

• The Louvre once again became home to royalty in the mid-1500s, when more wings were added as well as a corridor connecting the structure with the Tuileries, a newer palace that had been built nearby. Further construction was completed by Louis XIII, and the Louvre was again dramatically enlarged.

OCTOBER OBSERVANCES

(from page one)

• There are more than 500,000 wild hogs in Florida, and a staggering 2.6 million in the state of Texas. Many states sponsor a campaign each October to eliminate as many of these obnoxious pests as possible. • Since there are more than 1,200 species of bats, which comprises one-fifth of all mammals, it’s only fitting that they receive some sort of recognition. So October has been chosen as Bat Appreciation Month, honoring this much maligned group of winged creatures. Although bats seem scary and creepy to many, they are actually vital to the ecosystem in controlling pests and participating in pollination. The bumblebee bat, the world’s smallest mammal, weighs less than a penny, while the largest bat has a startling six-foot wingspan. Most bats feed on insects, with the average brown bat consuming up to 1,000 bugs in a single hour.

Q

• In 1935, a Chicago restaurant owner devised a scheme for a roller derby marathon. Fifty skaters teamed up in 25 male/female teams and took their starting positions in front of 20,000 fans at the Chicago Coliseum. They were prepared for a 3,000-mile jaunt around the track, the distance equivalent between San Diego and New York City. The marathon began on August 13 and wrapped up on September 22, with just nine teams finishing. Roller derbies became a craze, and before long, 50 major cities were hosting them before five million spectators. When World War II began, the majority of the skaters enlisted for military service and the fad died down.

THE LOUVRE (from page 2)

By Samantha Weaver

● It was beloved American actress Katharine Hepburn who made the following sage observation: “If you always do what interests you, at least one person is pleased.”

• By 1874, the Louvre had achieved its present form of an almost rectangular structure, with the Sully Wing to the east containing the square Cour Carrée and the oldest parts of the Louvre; and two wings which wrap the Cour Napoléon, the Richelieu Wing to the north and the Denon Wing, which borders the Seine to the south.

● Half of the Earth’s surface is covered by the Pacific Ocean. ● Need more evidence that portion sizes in America are getting larger? In the 1964 edition of the iconic “Joy of Cooking,” a recipe for chocolate chip cookies was said to yield 45 servings. When the cookbook’s 1997 edition was published, the same recipe was said to yield 36 servings.

• It should be no surprise that the Louvre’s most popular attraction is the Mona Lisa. Painted by Leonardo da Vinci sometime between 1503 and 1506, the subject is thought to be Lisa Gherardini, the wife of a Florentine cloth merchant. It is believed that da Vinci was invited by King Francois I to work near the king’s castle around 1516, and that da Vinci took the painting with him.

• The first known written reference to a cupcake was in a 1796 recipe in American Cookery, where the treat was referred to as “a cake to be baked in small cups.” It was actually called a “cupcake” in the 1828 publication Seventy-Five Recipes for Pastry, Cakes, and Sweetmeats.

• The term “cupcake” was two-fold. Before the days of muffin tins, cupcakes were originally baked in heavy pottery cups or ramekins, and were called cupcakes because of the baking medium. The name was also derived from the ingredients’ measurements. Cupcakes were frequently called number cakes, quarter cakes, or 1-2-3-4 cakes. The numerical nickname started as an easy way to remember the quantities of the four main ingredients – 1 cup of butter, 2 cups of sugar, 3 cups of flour, and 4 eggs. A cup of milk and a spoon of soda completed the recipe. • The British call cupcakes “fairy cakes,” while the Australians have given them the name “patty cakes.” • About 1.6 million viewers tune in each week to watch the Food Network’s Cupcake Wars, a competition among bakers to create unique cupcakes. The program, which premiered in 2010, features four contestants who are eliminated one by one in three rounds. • During Round One, competitors bake cupcakes corresponding to a certain theme which are judged on taste alone. Round Two’s cupcakes are judged on taste and presentation, while Round Three challenges teams to produce 1,000 cupcakes in just two hours. The winner is awarded the tidy sum of $10,000. • According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the world’s largest cupcake was produced by Gourmet Gift Baskets in August of

Q:

I am so happy to hear that “Army Wives” has been renewed for another season. Will all the stars be back for the new season? -- Fiona W., via e-mail

A: Lifetime has indeed ordered 13 more

episodes of the hit military drama for a 2013 seventh season. However, not all the details of who will be returning have been worked out. Catherine Bell appears to be a yes, while Dana Delany is most likely a no. Kelli Wilson, who plays Jackie Clark, seems a likely candidate to slip into a more prominent role. And don’t count out newcomer Kellie Martin, who plays Capt. Nicole Galassini. She told me recently that she’d be up for another tour of duty with “Wives.” “I was honored to play this woman,” Kellie said. “I thought she was so brave and so smart, yet in her personal life she had to hide, and it was really fun to play someone who comes out. I feel like Capt. Galassin is the girl next door. Everybody knows someone like Kellie Martin her. I’m just very proud of “Army Wives” and Lifetime for following through with the storyline that they did. “Last we saw Nicole, she was on a plane to Afghanistan at the season end, and there was a lot of turbulence ... but I had a great time and I never ever know where my career’s going to head, so it’ll be interesting to see what happens.” In the meantime, you can catch Kellie in the Hallmark Channel original movie “I Married Who?” airing Saturday, Oct. 20, at 9/8c. ***

A: CBS opted back in May not to renew the

David Caruso-starring crime drama after 10 seasons and 232 episodes. However, you can still whet your “CSI” appetite with the original “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation” on Wednesday nights with Ted Danson and Elisabeth Shue, and “CSI: NY” with Gary Sinise and Sela Ward on Friday nights. ***

This season the team of investigators will travel worldwide in search of the ever-elusive sasquatch, heading to Australia to investigate the phenomenon known as “yowies” and to Indonesia to scout out the “orang-pendek” creature. ***

Q: I was wondering if two of my favorite reality shows will be back: “L.A. Ink” and “Gene Simmons Family Jewels.” -- N.P. in Kentucky

A:

I hate to have to deliver this doublewhammy of bad news for you, but neither “L.A. Ink” nor “Family Jewels” has been renewed for a new season, and therefore won’t be returning to TLC and A&E, respectively.

Everyday CHEAPSKATE

Bankruptcy is Rarely a Good Option DEAR MARY: My son owes $25,000 on credit cards and student loans. He wants to file for bankruptcy. Do you think this is a good idea? -- Kae, EC blog

Everyday CHEAPSKATE Dear Kae: That’s like asking, “Is chemo®

therapy a good Well, yes, if we’re talking byidea?” Mary Hunt about treatment for a horrible disease that could save the patient’s life. But is chemotherapy a good idea to treat the flu or a cold? No, of course not. That would be too severe. Bankruptcy is like that. There are times when bankruptcy is the only option and cannot be avoided. First, your son needs to understand that student loans cannot be discharged through bankruptcy except in very rare instances that involve total disability, for example. So that leaves the credit cards. Next, he needs to know that he may not qualify to file. Over the years, changes in the law have made it more difficult to quality. Lastly, if he were to qualify, he needs to know that a bankruptcy, like a birth or divorce, remains a public record forever. It can be reported to the credit bureaus for only 10 years, but that doesn’t make it go away. Sadly, for most people bankruptcy doesn’t address the issues that got the person into trouble in the first place. I would much rather see your son buckle down, get serious about his debt and create a plan to pay it off. I would recommend he visit the website for the National Foundation for Credit Counseling at NFCC.org. This highly respected organization offers telephone and online credit counseling, an information-rich FAQ section on their website, plus

financial tools and resources. Taking responsibility to pay his debts no matter what that requires will build character and set your son up for financial success in the future. * * * DEAR MARY: What’s the youngest that you suggest giving kids their own money? -- Brenda, New York Dear Brenda: I believe that as soon as a child recognizes that money has value because it buys things, that child can learn age-appropriate ways to manage money and make good decisions with it. That can start as young as age six. In my new book, “Raising Financially Confident Kids,” I suggest that parents need to establish family rules of money management that line up with their values. You’ll read in the book about how my husband and I created a financial plan for our kids. The rules were simple. When they got any money, they had to give away 10 percent and save 10 percent. Then, they could make their own decisions on how to spend the remaining 80 percent. The only catch was that they had a responsibility AdofProof: list things we, their parents, wouldn’t pay for. PTSD Getaways If you have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), organizations around the country have created camps and retreats just for you. In many cases, your family is invited, too. Here are a few examples: ► In Washington state, Project New Hope Washington (www.projectnewhopewa.org) has a camp-style weekend retreat run by Lions Clubs volunteers. Professional counselors are on hand, and recreation activities are provided that help with coping techniques. The goal is to facilitate re-integration back into the family and community. This camp is free, including meals and accommodations. ► In New Mexico, there are National Veterans Wellness and Healing Center retreats run by the Department of Veterans Services. You must have a diagnosis of PTSD from the Department of Veterans Affairs to attend these are seven-day retreats, which are for individuals and couples (www.dvs.state. nm.us/wellness_retreats.html or call 575-5951971).

► The Kieve Veterans Camp on the coast of Maine has two mid-winter camps as well as during summer. In January 2013, there is a women-only camp. The family camp runs in April. (The Vietnam & Only camp session in December is already full.) DeFLAGPOLE SALES pending on the season, activities can include fishing, canoeing, hiking, sledding, outdoor games, yoga, Flags of USAStatesForeign Delivery all Sizes. Military & Religious pottery, ropes course, climbing, ice-fishing, snowAvAilAble Flagpoles- Residential & Commercial shoeing, cross-country skiing, massage, arts and crafts, woodworking and fireside chats. Crazy Quilt Is a Stitch in Time Q:

This is a photo of a “crazy quilt” that was passed on to my mother. It was handmade by my great-grandmother after she migrated from Italy at age 15 to marr y my great-grandfather. They were needy and came under the wing of the Jane Adams Hull House in Chicago. The quilt was a product of her learning experience there. It is made up of velvet and silk pieces embroidered together to form the pattern. The date “1892” is sewed into one corner. The quilt has been well preser ved over all these many years. Any information you can give me about this quilt and the value it might have will be appreciated.

A: Jane Adams was a visionary who founded

Hull House, a pioneer settlement for European immigrants who came to the United States around 1900. They welcomed those in need of acclimating to a new country. Hull House provided educational, social and artistic programs for throngs of Italians, Jews, Irish, Greeks, Germans and even Canadian French new to the United States. Crazy quilts were popular in the late 1800s and early 1900s. They were made by using irregular patches of silk or velvet that were applied to fabric. Each piece was sewn together by embroidering. Similar crazy quilts can be found selling anywhere from the hundreds to several thousand dollars.

Crazy Quilts were popular from the late 1800s to the early 1900s.

-- namely the referee situation in football that is throwing our steady diet of quality football out of whack. The NFL locked out the regular officials before the season, and it was mostly treated like an afterthought. After the Seattle Seahawks stole a game from the hands (literally) of the Green Bay Packers on Monday night in week 3, fans saw the problem a little clearer. The league’s head coaches had already smelled blood in the water. Every mistake they made had been magnified to gargantuan portions, best exemplified by a bellicose Bill Belichek trying to rip off the arm of a linesperson after a loss. It’s been a disaster. Troy Aikman is even tweeting about the referees in between concussions. Unlike pork production, this shortcoming was avoidable. If anything, the poor officiating has led to two things: a reminder that in order for the games to be played right, you need the right officials in place. In this land of plenty, a poor game of pigskin is like a world without bacon ... and that just isn’t any way to live. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in Kansas City. OCT. OBSERVANCES (from page page 3) American Indian and Alaska Native babies are nearly three times as likely. Studies also show that infants who sleep on their stomach have a much higher risk. • An elevated body temperature contributes to the danger of SIDS deaths, as does sleeping on a soft mattress. Some scientists think that defects in an infant’s nervous system, where breathing and heart rate are regulated, contribute to the likelihood, as do less-developed brain stems, where respiratory functions are controlled.

TEE UP

• The good news is that since 1994, when physicians began instructing parents to put babies to sleep on their backs, the number of SIDS deaths has declined by more than half. ■

Professional Golf Tips with Tina Mickelson Deep fairway rough When you find yourself in deep fairway rough, it is tempting to take a longer iron or fairway wood and try to hit it as far as humanly possible. But the smarter and safer approach is to just get it back into the fairway and set yourself up for your next shot. So the next time you are in deep fairway rough, here are a few things to consider:

Unbeknownst to Melvin, his cart had broken down in the dangerous, non-member part of the country club.

• Make sure you use a club with enough loft. You don’t want to use anything more than an 8-iron. This ensure you can get the club face to the ball with enough loft to get it out of the rough. • Open the club face slightly when you set up to the ball. At impact the heel of the club tends to get caught up in the grass, causing the club face to shut down a bit, causing the ball to go left. By opening the club face at address you are allowing for this. • Set up with your weight slightly on your front leg, play the ball back in your stance, and open your stance just a bit. All of this promotes a steeper swing, helping the club face strike the ball first instead of getting caught up in the heavy grass. • Grip the club slightly firmer than usual to ensure the club doesn’t come loose in your hands at impact. Keep these factors in mind when you find yourself in deep fairway rough and you will get yourself out more easily and consistently. TINA MICHELSON, PGA

PHOBIAS (continued): • Some phobias relate to what’s up above, such as the sun (heliophobia), the clouds (nephophobia), the moon (selenophobia), and the stars (siderophobia). Some folks are just afraid of looking up – they are called anablephobes. • Not all phobias seem that abnormal or uncommon. Lots of people might have a fear of death, known as necrophobia. But those with an extreme form might be terrified of being buried alive. A nosocomephobe has a fear of hospitals, a verminophobe is afraid of germs, and a hydrophobe has an irrational fear of water. • Individuals suffering from extreme agoraphobia rarely leave their homes, due to their fear of public or open spaces and the inescapable situations that may occur there. Only home is safe. • Some phobias can be a learned behavior that comes from listening to others describe a traumatic event. An individual in one’s life can trigger a phobia, such as peladophobia, the fear of bald people. Those with nosto-phobia, a fear of returning home, may be able to contribute their panic to a specific incident. • People who are afraid of looking into mirrors have cataptrophobia, while those with cyberphobia have a fear of working with computers. A person with an anxiety about memories is a mnemophobe. • Don’t confuse levophobia, the fear of objects to a person’s left, with dextrophobia, the fear of objects to the right. • Although some of us fear the possibility of cancer, an extreme carcinophobe will convince himself he has cancer because he touched someone who has it.
