The average snowflake falls at the rate of about 3.1 mph and it can take several hours for one to reach the ground. • The Guinness World Book of Records cites the world’s largest snowflake ever recorded as one that fell in Fort Keogh, Montana in January of 1887. This giant was 15 inches wide and 8 inches thick! • Although you might think every big snowstorm looks like a blizzard, the National Weather Service lists specific characteristics that must occur before it can officially be given that name. The storm must contain “winds reaching sustained speeds or frequent gusts of 35 mph or greater, with visibilities repeatedly reduced to 1/4 mile or less by falling and/or blowing snow for a period of at least three hours.” • Seasonal Affective Disorder, or S.A.D., is commonly called the “winter blues” and is a type of depression tied to the changes in the amount of sunlight we have. It was officially described and named in 1984 by the National Institute of Mental Health. Geographical locations that are dark or cloudy during the winter have a higher prevalence. During the late 1960s and throughout almost all of the ‘70s, Dock Ellis was a valued pitcher who played for several teams, including the Pittsburgh Pirates. On June 12, 1970, Ellis took LSD, under the mistaken belief that it was an off day for his team. By the time he realized that the Pirates were scheduled to play against the San Diego Padres that evening, it was too late. The drug proved to have no ill effect on Ellis; in fact, he pitched a no-hitter. When he recounted the event to a reporter 12 years later, he said he remembered only bits and pieces of the game, though he felt euphoric. Many years later, after being treated for chronic addiction, Ellis became a coordinator for an anti-drug program in California.

• It is evident that human sacrifices were a great part of the culture. Chichen Itza, which translates “the mouth of the well at Itza,” was settled around two large open wells, which supplied the population with their only source of water. One well was considered a sacred place, and the other for everyday use. Large amounts of human bones, jewelry and ceremonial objects have been recovered during excavation at the bottom of the sacred well.

A Brief History of

Christmas Cards Many people assume that Christmas cards have always been a part of our culture, but such is not the case. The first Christmas cards were actually greetings that were designed to raise awareness of people in need. • In 1843, Sir Henry Cole, in England, wanted to help those living in desolate conditions. Sir Henry was a writer of children’s books, handbooks for art and design and many more ventures. He was involved in public service for more than 50 years, including assisting with the postal service. • Being a man with many personal and business friends and acquaintances, and considering that people would hand write their Christmas greetings, Sir Henry felt that he didn’t have the time required to compose his own individually. In 1843, he commissioned artist John Calcott Horsley to design a card he could send that would depict the poor living conditions under which many lived. His idea was to raise awareness and encourage help for the poor, and at the same time offer his Christmas greetings. • Unexpectedly, the card that Horsley made for Sir Henry Cole caused quite a stir of criticism. The happy family gathered around toasting Christmas cheer on the front of the card included a child sipping wine! As in today’s society, this was not acceptable behavior and critics were aghast. But ironically, and despite the inappropriateness and the outcry, the card drew so much attention that it quickly became a hit. • Neither Cole nor Horsley had any idea of the impact their Christmas cards would have on Britain. The popularity of the Christmas card later began to grow in America and eventually spread the world over. By 1880 the design and development of Christmas greeting cards would become big business and open up new opportunities for writers, artists, printers and engravers. • The first Christmas cards were not religious in nature. They usually were quite plain with depictions of animals, quaint winter scenes, girls, dolls and more. A few had drawings depicting angels. • The first appearance of Christmas cards in the United States was in 1874. Bavarian-born lithographer, Louis Prang, is often referred to as the “Father of the American Christmas card.” • Prang ran a successful printing company in Boston during the late nineteenth century, producing high quality reproductions of famous art work and greeting cards, using a technique called chromolithography. Prior to his production of cards, Christmas cards were rarely exchanged in America. His were also among the first to depict religious scenes. • U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower issued the first official Christmas card from the White House in 1953. Now, a common practice, the official White House cards are usually designed

A:

The CW is not remaking the hit HBO series, which starred Sarah Jessica Parker and Kim Cattrall. Rather, they bought the rights to the prequel, “The Carrie Diaries,” based on the book written by “Sex” author Candace Bushnell. “The Carrie Diaries” -- set in the 1980s -- chronicles Carrie Bradshaw’s (played by AnnaSophia Robb) coming-of-age as she navigates her senior year of high school and discovers the glittering lights of Manhattan, and lots of shoes. “The Carrie Diaries” premieres on the CW on Monday, Jan. 14, at 8/7c, followed by “90210,” which moves to 9/8c. ***

I spent a day shopping at outlets. I was pretty pleased with some good deals I scored, especially one sweater I found for 50 percent off. But then a couple days later I went to my local mall and saw the same sweater on sale for even less! Needless to say, I was pretty annoyed. (and more than a few adults)

Sir Barks-a-Lot Barking is as natural as breathing. Triggered by a state of excitement, barking is a dog’s means of communicating anger, loneliness, fear, playfulness or a need for something. Excessive barking is barking’s obnoxious and intolerable cousin. It’s an exaggeration of natural canine behavior that can only be eliminated by either giving in to the dog’s demand or reconditioning the dog. I’d advise doing the latter -- yesterday. The excessive barking of an overindulged or neglected dog has ruined friendships, destroyed relationships and added to the overwhelm of courts already jammed with frivolous concerns that are largely solvable without the aid of lawyers and judges. Time and money are wasted. Friends and credibility are lost. Furthermore, if you’re a renter, you may come home to find yourself staring at a notice to vacate. So don’t ignore your neighbor’s complaints about your dog’s barking. Instead, first find out whether you have a dog problem or a neighbor problem. Do a little sleuthing. Leave the dog with a friend or relative, or board him at a local kennel for a few days. During that time, ask your neighbor whether the barking has been a problem. If he complains even when the dog isn’t there, you have a neighbor problem. But if the dog turns out to be the culprit, there are adjustments that can and should be made to your approach, to the dog’s environment and/or to the dog’s temperament. Possible reasons behind excessive barking are vast but rarely mysterious: tethering, improper confinement (e.g., in a room behind a closed door), outside distractions (e.g., construction, stray animals, lawnmowers, a steady stream of strangers), bad weather, separation anxiety, heightened territorialism, lack of exercise, genetics, temperament, hunger... There’s a great cartoon that features an impatient pup sitting next to an empty food bowl at the feet of his master, an artist consumed with the masterpiece-in-the-making on the easel before him. The caption: “And how about some dinner, huh? One of the great masters, indeed.” The cartoon makes it clear that some problems come with simple solutions: --Keep the dog in a fenced backyard or dog run, rather than tethered to a tree out front. --Ensure he gets sufficient exercise -- two or three vigorous walks every day, with some spirited CASEY’S CORNER: Turn to page 10

YOUR

SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margenau

No Advantage to Waiting Beyond Age 70 Q:

I am close friends with an older woman whom I believe is making a big mistake regarding Social Security. She turned 70 about six months ago. She’s still working and says she plans to keep working as long as possible. But she has yet to sign up for her Social Security benefits. She says she will keep getting more money the longer she delays applying for her benefits. Also, she believes that there is some limit to the amount of money she can draw off of her account. She thinks that once she gets out all the money she has put into the system, her checks will stop. I’m only in my 40s and don’t know all that much about Social Security. Is any of this true?

A:

None of it is true. You should encourage your friend to apply for Social Security benefits immediately. Each month she waits, she is essentially throwing away a full Social Security check. While it is true that someone who puts off signing up for Social Security until age 70 gets a substantial delayed retirement bonus, there is absolutely no advantage to waiting beyond age 70. In other words, there are no more bonuses added to Social Security payments after that age. Well, let me clarify. There is a chance that her extra earnings (and corresponding Social Security tax payments) beyond age 70 will increase the amount of her monthly Social Security check. Whether she is due the increase depends on how much money she is making and how it compares to her past earnings that were used to figure the amount of her Social Security check. But, the point is, she gets that annual adjustment to her Social Security checks while she is getting benefits. This is a completely separate procedure from the delayed retirement bonus described above. Finally, your friend is dead wrong about only getting benefits until she draws out all the money she put into the system. Social Security doesn’t work that way. She will get a monthly Social Security check for the rest of her life. * * *

Q:

I started my Social Security at age 68. So I have two years worth of delayed retirement bonuses added to my Social Security payments. I just turned 69 and I am still working -- and plan to do so as long as I can. I read in one of your past columns that my Social Security checks should be adjusted upwards each year because of my additional earnings. But a Social Security representative told me that because I got those delayed retirement credits, I cannot get any increases because of my additional earnings. Is this true?

WHAT DO YOU WANT MOST IN A

Version (C)

Q: I want you to know that something

you wrote several months ago encouraging people not to gamble with their Social Security has turned out to be sadly true in our case. My husband waited until age 70 to start his Social Security checks. Because both his parents lived until their mid-90s, he was convinced he would live at least as long. But he had a massive heart attack about three months ago and died at age 71. I don’t really have a question. I just want you and other readers to know that sometimes the best laid plans don’t work out.

Charles Meigh joined his father’s pottery at Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England, in 1834 and operated it under his own name from 1835 to 1949. From 1850 to 1851, the name Charles Meigh and Sons and Pankurst was used. In 1851, the firm dropped the name Pankurst to become Charles Meigh and Sons. Meigh and Sons produced flow blue and mulberry transfer pattern pieces and salt glazed teapots. The pottery closed in 1901. “California” is the name of the pattern and the scene is a transfer print and not hand painted. Your mid-19th century platter would probably be worth $125 to $150.

his brother Tom would play for the Terps, and their record combined adds up to the most points by a brotherly tandem in ACC history. Tom went on to various Sports Illustrated covers, became a Rhodes Scholar and later in life he served as a congressman for a district gerrymandered out of existence in Maryland. Today, Jay is a doctor in Missouri and he is still married to Gail, the pretty Terrapin cheerleader and former homecoming queen. Now, I promised that most of what we said was off the record, but I can’t resist giving up a few details: Jay and Gail are in the market for a new home and may become neighbors of mine. They want to cut down on space ... their kids are all grown and they’re eager to lose even more baggage. Gail points out the fact that they will have to get rid of some memorabilia. I scoff at that notion and share a story about a sled that was discarded by elders in my family years ago. When it snowed during a holiday, the absence of the sled led to great consternation ... if only out of nostalgia. “Don’t get rid of the basketball stuff,” I tell her. “Pass it down to your grandchildren and greatgrandchildren.” She nodded in agreement, but had to laugh a bit. “You have to see the cover (of the media guide) ... those shorts ... and that jump shot! They don’t shoot like that anymore.” Yeah, well ... at least he had one. In today’s game a good jump shot is as rare as mint chocolate-chip ice cream. Either way, I’ve got neither to speak for.

This mark is on the bottom of an ironstone platter that has been in our family for as far back as I can remember. My grandmother always kept it in the dining room china cabinet and when my mother inherited it, she kept it on a shelf where we kids couldn’t reach. It measures approximately 11 inches long and is in mint condition. It is decorated with a black and white countr y scene against a white background. I would not part with it for anything and plan to pass it down to my daughter, but I would like to know who made it, when, where and its value.

After an hour under the weight of the heavy snow and lack of oxygen, the survival rate is practically nil. • Rescued victims of avalanches have compared their terrifying experience to having their entire body instantly encased in cement, while being unable to move their head, arms or legs.
