new year with a debt. Any visitors who arrive before the chimes of midnight on New Year’s Eve would be violently shooed away to prevent bad luck. At midnight, the man of the house would open the back door to let the old year out and then open the front door to let in the new year. The household also would make as much noise as possible to scare off evil spirits.

YELLOWSTONE (from page one) beneath the surface, but in Yellowstone the bulge of magma is only two miles deep -- and relentlessly pressing upwards. • When drilling deep into the crust of the Earth, geologists have found that the temperature steadily increases with depth, and is generally constant at the rate of 1.4° F for every 100 feet. • However, at the Norris Geyser Basin where the magma is closest to the park’s surface, drillings show that the temperature increase is 89 times faster, increasing at the rapid rate of 124°F for every 100 feet down. Water that trickles down in this area heats up rapidly the lower it gets. • Geysers are hot springs that erupt periodically as the result of super-heated water deep underground becoming trapped in chambers with channels that lead up to the surface. As the subterreanean water boils and steams it expands, creating immense pressure that eventually explodes upward through the channels to burst forth at the surface. • There are an estimated 10,000 thermal features in the park including hot pools, fumaroles, mud pots and seeps. Only about five percent of Yellowstone’s thermal features are considered geysers, which are defined as hot water that spurts forcefully out of the ground. Sponge Geyser in the Upper Geyser Basin was …in so named because the entire eruption could have easily been absorbed by a sponge. It was the smallest named geyser in the park, erupting to a height of six inches. After an earthquake in 1959 this tiny geyser went dormant.

SCOTTISH NEW YEAR (from page 2)

By Samantha Weaver

● It was Albert Einstein who offered the following explanation of relativity: “Put your hand on a hot stove for a minute and it seems like an hour. Sit with a pretty girl for an hour and it seems like a minute. That’s relativity.” ● In Singapore, one of the colorful customs is training birds for singing competitions. It’s not always just a hobby, though; for some, it’s a serious -- and costly -- business. A single well-trained bird might sell for as much as $60,000. ● If you’re an oenophile -- that’s an aficionado of wine -- you probably won’t be surprised to learn that as the cost of a wine goes up, so does a drinker’s appreciation of that wine. It seems that it’s not all about the quality of the vintage, though: In a recent study, tasters were offered two samples of the same wine, but each sample was labeled with a different price. The tasters overwhelmingly preferred the more expensive vintage. ● Only one-fifth of homes in America are not air-conditioned. In the sweltering South, a mere 5 percent lack that vital amenity. ● Those who study such things say that the wind power in an average hurricane is equivalent to 1.5 trillion watts. That’s the same amount of power that is generated by fully half of the entire world’s generating capacity. ● The works of Agatha Christie have been translated more times into other languages than those of any other author in history. ● Many people see dogs as doing heroic work in tandem with law enforcement and military, but they’re not the only animals Ad the Proof: put to such use. • Ravens that have found a complete carcass are unable to penetrate it to reach the meat. They have been known to go in search of wolves, coyotes, or even a human, guiding them back to the site by circling and calling. Its strategy is to give the others first go at it so that it can at least have a chance to eat the leftover scraps. • The crow is another bird that demonstrates reasoning ability in preparing its meals. Researchers have watched crows pick up snails along the shoreline and observed them circling skyward to gain altitude with the snail in their beak. When they are at a certain height, they will drop snail and swoop down to watch it crack open on the rocks below. • Researchers carefully calculated the weights of the various snails, the density of their shells and vertical speed needed to crack them open on impact with a hard surface. They concluded that crows know the exact height that is needed for each size snail to crack open. Any height less would not work, and flying any higher would be a waste of energy and also increase the chance that the shell would bounce into the water. Crows also use their beaks to swish the snails in the water to wash away bits of shell that still cling to the meat. • One crow, unable to break open tasty acorns, solved the problem by dropping several of them on a busy street. It perched on a nearby lightpost and waited and watched until enough cars had run over them, then flew back and picked the nutmeats out of the crushed shells. • A crow being attacked by a falcon in a display of aerial acrobatics finally managed to escape its aggressor’s deadly talons by flying between two stretches of barbed wire on a farmer’s fence. The crow swooped easily between the barbed lines, but the unfortunate falcon realized too late that its larger size wouldn’t fit, and met painful defeat in a flurry of frazzled feathers. • Researchers have identified about 300 crow “words,” yet they cannot understand the dialect of other crows from a different area.

Magma is usually found about 40 miles deep, but in Yellowstone, bulge of magma only two miles from the surface is restlessly pressing upwards. (puzzle answers on Pg. 14) turn the page for more!

Dealing With Grief and Tragedy

Death, like birth, weddings, celebration or illness, is a natural part of life. But whenever death comes, it is always a traumatic and life-changing experience for those left behind. Because grief is natural, there has been a backlash against the new recommendation with many experts believing that a much longer time (6 to 12 months or more) is needed before continued grief becomes abnormal in which case symptoms are similar to any chronic depressive disorder. So how should we deal with grief or support a grieving person? Much of the advice given is often incorrect. Becoming distracted, going back to work and ignoring the pain will not necessarily make grieving go away more quickly. Pretending nothing has happened or being “strong” and unemotional will not help. Feeling very sad, vulnerable and lost are natural and sharing these intimate feelings with those who love you will help the healing process. Grief is difficult to watch and a grieving person is particularly difficult to support. Many of us wish to avoid thinking about death at all costs, and find it uncomfortable to be around those who are mourning and tend to stay away -- a mistake. Supporting a person in mourning does not mean continuing with life as normal or reassuring that all will be better soon. A true friend will simply be there and do nothing but offer support, love and kindness. Let people deal with grief in their own unique way. Be particularly supportive in the weeks and months following a tragedy, when everyone else has gone home, life has returned to normal, when the mourner is alone and not coping. As our hearts and thoughts reach out to those most affected by these senseless killings, we should all understand that every life is touched by tragedy, be it a life threatening illness or the death of a loved one. Having insights into the grieving process will help make the condition understandable and promote eventual healing.

The CGC program is rewarding in that it prepares both dog and owner to handle real-life situations. It serves as an achievable goal and one that comes with the reward of recognition: You and your dog will receive an official Canine Good Citizen certificate from the AKC once he passes his test! For dogs like Jonny Justice, Hector, Audie, Ernie, Uba, Ted, Little Red, Leo, Ray and Oscar, those certificates made national news and meant a Ad Proof: second chance for a life in a safe and loving home. The senseless murder of 26 people, 20 of them children between age 6 and 7, has deeply wounded our nation, our leaders and us. The New Year is a time when we look toward the future, to new beginnings, a clean slate and resolves to make this a better year than the last. So writing about grief is the last topic I would prefer to cover now. But sadly we cannot choose the time when tragedy strikes our nation or ourselves. Grief has been in the news lately as the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) is about to be released. Ten thousand psychiatrists who met in groups beginning in January 2010 developed the manual. Every mental disease is characterized and the criteria needed to make a diagnosis documented. Most controversial is the recommendation by a group of psychiatrists who suggest that grief should be labeled a disease after as little as 2 weeks. This condition is referred to as “abnormal grief,” “prolonged grief disorder,” “traumatic grief” or, most frequently, “complicated grief.” Virtually every grieving person experiences profound sorrow and sadness, disbelief, loneliness, anger, insomnia, inability to concentrate and an unwillingness to engage in normal conversation. Grief may express itself through crying and wailing or complete silence and withdrawal. The key question is: how quickly should a mourner no longer grieve? Labeling grief as an illness after as little as 2 weeks may lead to inappropriate and excessive use of antidepressants (that are not without side effects) and the recommendation for grief counseling that has been shown to be of little value in the healing process except for those with mental disease. The late Elizabeth Kubler Ross was the first to describe the characteristics of profound grief: First comes denial (this cannot be happening to me) Then anger (we must blame someone, ourselves, or God). Next is bargaining (if only things get better, I promise that I will do something in return) Followed by depression (profoundly glum, do not want to be involved in life, and even have thoughts of suicide) And finally acceptance (understand that death is part of the circle of life and, despite the loss, become peaceful and able to function fully in the community). With acceptance comes gradual recovery.

YOUR

SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margenau

When Seniors Become Disabled Q:

I am 62 and started getting Social Security retirement benefits just a couple months ago. At the time I applied for Social Security, I was having some physical problems at my job, but I was still working part time. However, recently I’ve been forced to completely stop working because of various ailments, from heart problems to a bad back. My doctor has signed a paper saying I am 100 percent disabled, so I’m pretty sure I’d qualify for Social Security disability. Can I file for those benefits?

A:

Yes, you can file for Social Security disability benefits. If your claim is approved, you will be switched from the retirement program to disability. That would mean a little extra money in your monthly benefit checks. A Social Security disability benefit pays the same rate as your full, age-66 retirement benefit. But from that amount, they will have to deduct about one-half of one percent for each month you’ve already received reduced retirement payments. There is one other point I need to make. You should know that just because your doctor says you are “100 percent disabled” does not mean you will automatically be eligible for Social Security disability benefits. What your doctor considers disabled and what Social Security law considers disabled may be based on two entirely different perspectives. * *Wed. * NOON 9/12

Page 11

retirement age, you are getting the highest amount you are due from Social Security. Here is another way to look at that. You technically could file for disability benefits. And if your claim was approved, you would initially be eligible for a rate equal to your full retirement benefit. But from that amount, they would have to deduct onehalf of one percent for all the Social Security checks you’ve received -- and that would take you right back down to the reduced payment rate you’re currently getting. You asked if you might qualify for SSI. Supplemental Security Income is a federal welfare program that the Social Security Administration runs for the government. It pays a small monthly stipend to people who are poor if they are over 65, or if they are under 65 but disabled. Because you’re over 65, you would not get SSI disability benefits. But if your income and assets are low enough, you might get SSI payments based on your age. SSI eligibility rules vary from state to state, so you will have to contact your local Social Security office to find out if you qualify. * * *

A:

Your stepson will qualify for dependent’s benefits on your record simply because he is a minor child. In other words, the fact that he has a disability isn’t an issue -- at least, not for the time being. But when he turns 18, his disability will become a factor in his continuing eligibility for benefits. The law says that benefits to a dependent child are cut off at the 18th birthday. But if a child is disabled, those benefits can continue indefinitely, even into his adult years. If you have a Social Security question, Tom Margenau has the answer. Contact him at thomas.margenau@ comcast.net. DECISIONS?

Q: I am 59 and have a 70 percent dis-

ability rating from the VA. Do you think I will qualify for Social Security disability benefits?

Should I buy the newest technology?

A:

I really have no idea. The only way you will know for sure is to file a disability claim with the Social Security Administration. I can tell you this: the fact that you have been classified as 70 percent disabled by the VA has little if any bearing on your Social Security claim. SSA and VA have different definitions of what it means to be disabled. I’ve known people who have a 20 percent disability rating from VA who qualified for Social Security disability. On the other hand, I’ve known people classified as 100 percent disabled by the VA who were not eligible for any disability benefits from Social Security. Again, the only way to find out where you stand is to apply for Social Security disability benefits. You can do so online at www.socialsecurity.gov or by calling 800-772-1213 to make an appointment to file in person at your local Social Security office.

Once every 25 minutes, the water roils and boils when this submerged geyser erupts about 20 feet below the surface. Researchers ! AT sent an underwater BE EAT video camera down to observe what E H was occuring at the source. TH They found that trout regularly patrol the area, feeding on clouds of tiny crustaceans and aquatic insects stirred up by the eruptions. The geyser was then IN dubbed “The Trout Jacuzzi.”

• The Grand THE Canyon of Yellowstone is the first large canyon on the Yellowstone River downstream from Yellowstone Falls. The massive, multi-colored canyon is about 24 miles long, and in some areas up to 1,200 feet deep with its width varying between one quarter and three quarters of a mile. • Much has been written about the geologic underpinnings of Yellowstone Park, particularly the aspect of the park sitting atop a gigantic supervolcano with the potential to one day explode in a cataclysmic eruption a thousand times greater than that of Mount St. Helens. The subject is both fascinating and somewhat frightening, depending on how you view it. Perhaps we’ll have a go at it in a future issue! ■

will want to play the putt. I would say that if the putt is up hill than play more aggressive. If the putt is side hill or down hill than putt more conservatively. Now that you have figured out the speed you will putt with, lets focus on direction. If you are going to play the putt aggressively than putt for an object that is a couple of feet behind the hole. (as seen in the photo) By putting for an object behind the hole you will be hitting the putt with more force so you will want to play less break. To provide more force be sure to keep the handle of the putter moving through to your finish. The faster moving ball will not take as much break than a ball that is traveling at exact speed. If you are putting on a side hill or down hill slope than the slower moving ball or what I call “exact speed” is a good play. Exact speed basically means that the ball will trickle into the hole on its last rotation. When putting for exact speed you will want to putt for an object short of the hole and than allow the slope to feed the ball into the hole. Next time you are on the putting green try this strategy for holing more short putts.
