• Every day about three billion cups of tea are consumed around the world. In America, it can be found in 80% of households, and an estimated 127 million Americans are drinking it on any given day. Most of that tea comes from India, the world’s largest tea producer, processing about 850,000 tons each year.

• Tea as we know it is about 5,000 years old. Legend has it that a Chinese emperor discovered it as a new beverage in 2737 B.C. when some tea leaves blew off the tree into his pot of boiling water. It produced a pleasant aroma, so he sipped some and liked it. He shared his discovery with others, and it immediately became a part of their diet and culture. • Tea became popular in Europe during the 1600s and was brought to North America by the colonists. Britain’s Duchess of Bedford is said to have created the traditional afternoon tea around 1840, when she needed a pick-me-up to combat what she called “that sinking feeling.” • When the British government layed heavy taxes

• About this time, she began writing illustrated letters to the children of her former governess Annie Moore. The children were delighted by her fascinating tales and colorful illustrations of the animals in her “picture letters.” It was Annie who later suggested that these letters might make good children’s books, and encouraged Beatrix to consider having them published.

• Born in 1866 to a wealthy London family, Helen Beatrix Potter spent most of her childhood with nannies and governesses. She grew up with few friends outside her large, extended family, and seldom saw her parents except at bedtime. • Educated in a schoolroom in their home, Beatrix and her younger brother had little opportunity to socialize and interact with other children. Instead, a wide variety of pets became their companions and the Potter children spent endless hours closely observing and sketching the mice, frogs, lizards, rabbits, turtles, hedgehogs, bats and butterflies that shared their schoolroom. • Her study of literature, science and history was broad and she was an eager student. One of her governesses, Annie Moore, who was only three years older than Beatrix, tutored her in language studies and ultimately became a lifelong companion and friend.

TEA TIME (from page one) on the tea shipped to the American colonies in 1773, a group of 116 men dressed as Native Americans boarded British ships and tossed 342 chests of tea overboard, about 90,000 lbs. worth. In today’s currency, that was equal to nearly a million dollars worth of tea! • There are several categories of tea – white, green, oolong, and black – but they all come from the same plant, the Carnelia Sinensis. The category the tea winds up in depends on the way the leaves are processed. • Basic white tea skips the steps of processing altogether and the leaves are just steamed, dried and packaged. • Green, black, and oolong teas all go through a series of steps that begin with withering. The tea leaves are first spread out and dried in a warm environment, which makes them pliable. A rolling machine is next, twisting the leaves in order to release the flavorful natural oils. Some more expensive grades of teas are rolled by hand, resulting in a higher quality. • The l eaves then undergo an oxidation process, when they are spread out in a cool room. At this point, the tea leaves are still green, but as they take in oxygen they gradually turn darker. The darkening can be stopped by heating. • Green tea is not oxidized, oolong tea is oxidized for a short time, and the dark black

• The invention of the tea bag came about by accident. In 1904, a New York tea importer was looking for a cheaper way to send samples to customers. Thomas Sullivan had been using tin boxes, but since this proved expensive, he began wrapping the tea samples in small silk bags. His customers didn’t realize the bags were just packaging, and brewed their tea in them. Soon after, Sullivan was receiving orders for the new product. Today, 96% of the world brews its tea using a tea bag.

This evergreen plant will produce tea for about 50 years. At harvest time, an experienced picker will gather about 50 pounds of tea per day - enough for about 14,000 cups!

BEATRIX POTTER (from page 2) could copy her original drawings. She then compiled the illustrations into a rough blackand-white version of a children’s book and rewrote the Peter Rabbit story to go with them. By Samantha Weaver
● It was French Enlightenment author Voltaire who made the following sage observation: “Judge a man by his questions rather than his answers.” ● If you’re like the average American, you laugh 15 times every day. ● Have you ever heard of an artist by the name of John Banvard? You’re to be forgiven if the name is unfamiliar; few people these days remember him. In the mid-19th century, though, he was something of a phenomenon. In 1840, the then-25year-old man set off on a skiff down the Mississippi River. He spent more than a year on the river, sketching steadily along the way. After he completed the voyage, he spent another five years painting his “Panorama of the Mississippi,” an ambitious work that was 12 feet wide and more than 3 miles long. When completed, the painting was mounted on two upright revolving cylinders and displayed for the paying public throughout the U.S. and Europe, earning him $200,000 along the way.
• After some time, a romance began to bloom between Potter and Norman Warne. Her parents did not approve of the relationship, and when Norman sent Beatrix a letter containing a marriage proposal, her parents forbade the union. They considered Warne a simple “tradesman” and not suitable for the social standing of the Potter name. Shortly afterward, Norman became very ill, and sadly, just one month after his proposal, he died of leukemia.

IT’S TEE TIME! Fore! Heads up, as Tidbits looks at some history about golf, plus a few facts about the game that you might not know. • The ancient Romans played a game similar to golf, but the modern game of golf as we know it was developed in Scotland in the 1400s. The first written record is that of a ban of the sport by King James II in 1457, calling golf a distraction to learning archery, which was a vital necessity for national defense. • The official rules of golf state that a golfer’s bag may contain 14 clubs. A typical player will carry a driver, two woods, seven irons, three wedges, and a putter. The putter has earned the nickname “the money club” because it is the one used to tap the ball into the hole. “Driving’s for show; putting’s for dough!” as the saying goes. • The first clubs were made entirely of wood, followed by wood shafts with metal heads. In the 1920s, steel-shafted clubs came into play. Shafts made of fiber-reinforced composite materials were introduced in the early 1970s.

A: As recently as August 2012, Mel has said
Q: Can you tell me why these shows are no longer on the air: “All My Children” and “One Live to Live”? -- Pat A., Columbia, S.C.
A:
While I normally don’t cover daytime dramas in this column, what happened here is so miraculous in the TV world, I have to mention it. “All My Children” and “One Live to Live” -- which ended in September 2011 and January 2012, respectively -were canceled due to low ratings and cost. However, after much negotiation and legal wrangling, on April 29, both shows came back to life (with many of the core cast members reprising their roles) as 30-minute webisodes via production company Prospect Park. Fans can view daily episodes on Hulu, Hulu Plus and iTunes. Prospect Park recently announced plans to resuscitate CBS’s “As the World Turns” and “Guiding Light” at a later date. ***
Q:
I really enjoy “The Good Witch” movies with Catherine Bell. Are they planning to make more? -- Roberta F., North Rose, N.Y.
A:
that “Berserkers” is still in the works; however, Leo is no longer attached to the project. Mel has been working on rewriting the script with his “Braveheart” writer, Randall Wallace. While there has been no word on “Berserkers” since the record-breaking success of the History Channel’s “Vikings,” considering the viewing public’s new love affair with all things savage and Nordic, I’m thinking Mel’s movie would fare well at the box office, if he decides to proceed. ***
Q: I heard that this will be the final
season of “Merlin” on the Syfy channel. Is this true? I really enjoy this series and would miss it, along with the interesting and talented actors. Can its fans do anything to keep in on the air? -- Carol C., Rochester, N.Y.
A: The 13-episode fifth season of “Merlin,”
which began airing on Syfy here in the U.S. on May 5, is indeed the final season for the fantasy/adventure series. The show, which aired first in the U.K., is a production of BBC One that has been syndicated here in the States. So, we can complain all we want to Syfy, but unfortunately, it most likely won’t get the show back. The series already concluded in the U.K. over Christmas, and all five seasons are available on DVD. If our dogs could speak words to be understood by the likes of man, they might wake with the We scoop, and remove yo sun, stretch and, as padded paw disinfect hits grassy earth, poop weekly for reflect as Thoreau did in “Walden,” “I have, asonly it $9.75 were, my own sun and moon and stars, and a little world all to myself.” The yard. It is as cherished by the dog as bling by the rapper. And we are its custodians. That’s right -- spring-cleaning applies as much to our yards as to our homes. With that in mind and summer just around the corner, here is a list of things to stay on top of: --Mushrooms. If we’re not paying attention, we’ll venture outside one bright warm day to find more fungus growing on our dog’s turf than in a fraternity fridge. There’s an old saying: “There are old mushroom hunters, there are bold mushroom hunters, but there are no old, bold mushroom hunters.” Most vets advise that all wild-growing mushrooms be regarded as toxic until proved otherwise. So unless you’re a mycologist by trade, keep your yard free of ‘shrooms. --Blue-green algae or cyanobacteria. These toxic algae grow in both fresh and salt water in warm regions and are potentially fatal to pets and wildlife. So keep your ponds, fountains and pools clean. Also watch rivers and lakes when traveling, particularly stagnant water in warm climates. --Compost piles. First of all, high-fives for composting. Second of all, make sure you keep that compost beyond the reach of curious pets and wildlife. Decaying matter can contain tremorgenic mycotoxins that are potentially lethal to pets and wildlife. And of course, dairy and meat products don’t belong in compost piles. --Fertilizers, including organic fertilizers and mulch products. Most people grasp that chemical fertilizers and pets don’t mix. But just because a fertilizer is organic doesn’t mean it’s good for your dog. Blood meal and bone meal, both great organic fertilizers, and iron, which is added to many fertilizers, all cause problems ranging from unpleasant to dangerous if ingested by animals. And cocoa bean mulch is attractive to dogs, particularly, because of its chocolate aroma, but it, too, can cause harmful effects. --Heat stroke/exhaustion. This almost goes without saying -- almost. Dogs need access to shade outside if they don’t have ins and outs to the house. CASEY’S CORNER: Turn to page 10

Vaccination for Shingles Recommended After 60 After age 60, everyone should receive the shingles vaccine. Shingles is a painful and debilitating illness that impairs quality of life. It is caused by the herpes zoster virus related to chickenpox. Despite the fact that vaccination against shingles is highly effective in preventing the disease, new information published in the journal PLoS Medicine suggests that fewer than 4 percent of Medicare recipients have received the vaccine. Of more than 766,330 individuals surveyed from January 2007 to December 2009, only 29,785 (3.9 percent) were vaccinated. During this time, 12,958 cases of shingles occurred in the unvaccinated (1.7 percent), compared with 154 cases among those who received the vaccine (.5 percent). Most who develop shingles have had chickenpox as a child. The chickenpox rash usually starts in the upper body, arms and legs. Beginning with a mild fever, it takes about two days for a rash that blisters and eventually forms a scab. Chickenpox is more serious in adults, particularly in adult cigarette smokers, individuals with lung disease and in pregnancy, when premature labor and lifethreatening infection in the fetus can occur. After you have chickenpox, immunity against further infection develops. However, the virus persists indefinitely in the body, lying dormant in nerve cells. After the age of 60, for reasons that are ill understood, the virus starts growing in the nerve, and shingles develops in the area of the body where the particular nerve functions. The disease is always on one side of the body, and it can occur anywhere. Sometimes the area affected is small; other times it is large. The earliest symptom is severe itching followed by a blotchy, painful rash. Within a day, the rash becomes violently red and painful. As Ad chickenpox, Proof: with blisters burst, leading to bloody

SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margenau
Social Security Benefit Cuts Are Rare In last week’s column, I presented a brief history of Social Security by highlighting the major changes to the program brought about by annual amendments to the original Social Security law. Sometimes it was a dramatic change, such as the addition of the disability program in 1956. But most times, Social Security amendments introduce relatively modest reforms, such as the 1977 amendments that lowered the duration of marriage requirement for divorced women from 20 years to ten years. But the point I am getting at in today’s column is that almost without fail, every amendment to the original Social Security law expanded or increased outlays, or liberalized the rules allowing more folks to qualify for the program’s various benefits. What struck me is that in the almost 80 year history of the program, I can think of less than a half dozen times when Social Security benefits were actually reduced. Here is a brief overview of the Social Security cuts that have been made over the years. Student benefits Since the very earliest days of Social Security, the dependent minor children of a retired or deceased parent, and since the mid 1950s, the dependent minor children of a disabled parent, were eligible for monthly benefits on the parent’s Social Security record. Those benefits were paid until the child turned 18, but could continue beyond age 18 in two circumstances: 1) if the child was disabled, in which case they could continue for the rest of the child’s life, even into their adult years; and 2) if the child was still in school, in which case they would continue until age 22. In 1981, Congress decided to eliminate benefits to students over age 18. They reasoned that because so many other forms of government loans and grants were available to students, there was no need to further subsidize higher education through the Social Security program. Mother’s benefits curtailed Congress was looking for other ways to trim Social Security outlays in 1981, and widowed mothers and dependent wives/mothers of retired or disabled husbands with minor children ended up in their crosshairs. For decades, the law had prescribed that wives and widows of any age with young children in their care could receive monthly benefits (in addition to the benefits paid to their kids) as long as at least one of their children was eligible for benefits.
Tidbits of Coachella Valley
Page 11
But in 1981, they changed to law to say that benefits to the mother would end when the youngest child turned 16. They figured that once all the children were over age 16, the mother ought to be able to work, if necessary, to help support her family. (By the way, although these situations rarely occur, the same benefits, and the same cutbacks, also applied to widowed fathers and dependent stayat-home husbands with minor children.) Death benefit restrictions In the early days of Social Security, Congress offered a one-time death benefit to the family members of a taxpayer who died before having a chance to collect Social Security benefits. Over the years, this partial refund of Social Security taxes morphed into an official Social Security death benefit payable to the family members of anyone who died, even if he or she had been a Social Security beneficiary. Most people mistakenly referred to the one-time payment as a “burial benefit.” It never was meant to be that, especially considering that it was capped at $255 many years ago. As anyone who has ever planned a funeral knows, $255 would barely cover the cost of flowers, let alone all the other burial or cremation costs. Anyway, in yet another attempt to curtail Social Security expenditures, Congress in 1981 decided that the death benefit should be paid only to a widow or widower who was living with the deceased at the time of death or to any minor children. Benefits to prisoners suspended Prior to 1992, it was assumed that people getting Social Security had earned their benefits, so they were legally due their Social Security checks no matter where they lived. But in the early 1990s, Congress came under intense pressure to suspend monthly benefits to anyone in jail or prison. People felt that since prisoners were already getting their room and board paid for by the taxpayers, they didn’t need taxpayer-funded Social Security checks. Drug addicts and alcoholics There was a rash of news stories in the mid 1990s highlighting certain disabled people who were allegedly spending the proceeds of their Social Security disability checks on drugs and alcohol. Knuckling under the pressure to do something about this, Congress eventually passed a law that essentially denied such benefits to anyone whose only disabling

Click the box on the left of each one you’re interested in, and at the bottom of the screen click on Compare. Also see Hospital Safety Score (www.hospitalsafetyscore.org). Put in your ZIP code and the map will show the ratings of all the hospitals in your area. Of the ratings, “A” is the best. Scroll down and click on each hospital to find detailed information. The AARP article lists four ways to protect yourself against something bad happening in the hospital: 1) Check the hospital’s credentials at The Joint Commission (qualitycheck.org). 2) Ask questions, and you’ll have a better outcome. 3) Bring someone with you to watch and listen to what is going on around you. 4) Be persistent in demanding that standard procedures be followed. A hospital stay can be frightening, but choosing the best hospital may get you a better outcome.
