POTATOES (from page one) He had earlier been introduced to the potato as a food crop, so he encouraged the peasants to grow the new food as well. The peasants did grow them -- but, still fearing they were poisonous to humans, fed them only to their livestock. So Frederick had his cooks invent potato recipes and circulated the cooking instructions among the people. Angered when they still refused to eat them, he resorted to a threat of punishment. He issued an edict that anyone who did not include potatoes in their diet would have their ears publicly cut off. With this incentive, potatoes quickly became a regular part of the Prussian diet. • When French pharmacist Augustine Parmentier was captured during the Seven Year War in the mid-1700s, he was thrown into prison where his Prussian captors fed him little besides potatoes. He remained in good health in spite of the limited diet. • When he was released, Parmentier returned home and encouraged all French families to start eating potatoes. He went to the King of France with a plan to grow the crop and feed the hungry. The King was not impressed, but he consented to give Parmentier a few acres of the worst possible land near Paris. Nothing would grow there -- nothing, that is, except potatoes, which thrived. Like the Prussians, the French people thought of potatoes simply as fodder for livestock, so Parmentier devised a scheme to change the tide of public opinion.

He also holds the distinction of being the oldest president with living grandchildren. Tyler was born in 1790, and his son Lyon Gardiner Tyler was born in 1853. Lyon Gardiner, in turn, had children at a rather advanced age for fatherhood. Lyon Gardiner Tyler Jr. was born in 1924, when his father was 71, and Harrison Ruffin Tyler was born in 1928. Both men were still living in 2012, and the younger of the brothers maintained the Tyler family historic home, Sherwood Forest.

PERILOUS PARACHUTING • Gliding in unmotorized airplanes is a popular sport in Europe, with pilots holding exhibitions and contests to set records for time aloft and altitude. In Germany in 1930, a glider society held an exhibition. Five glider pilots flew into a towering thunderhead in an effort to set a new altitude record by using the updrafts for lift. But the updrafts were more powerful than they had counted on and all the gliders were literally ripped apart and torn to pieces by the violent winds. The pilots bailed out, but were themselves caught in the strong updrafts. They were carried high to the freezing upper regions of the storm, where their bodies quickly became coated with ice in sub-zero temperatures. All the pilots froze to death but one, who finally reached the ground and miraculously survived the harrowing experience.

Q: I am so glad “Burn Notice” is back, but I heard this is its last season. True? -- Ronald P., via e-mail

A: Yes, USA recently announced that sea-

son seven will be its last. Jeff Watchel, co-president of USA Network, teased: “(We) will raise the stakes even higher, leading up to a spectacular series finale.” *** READERS: As promised, I am going network by network, listing the fate of all 2012/13 network shows. Clip and save this column, and also visit www.celebrityextraonline.com for the complete list. This week I’ll tackle the CBS shows. On the renewed list is: “2 Broke Girls,” “The Big Bang Theory,” “Blue Bloods,” “Criminal Minds,” “CSI,” “Elementary,” “The Good Wife,” “Hawaii Five-O,” “How I Met Your Mother,” “The Mentalist,” “Mike and Molly,” “NCIS,” “NCIS: Los Angeles,” “Person of Interest” and “Two and a Half Men.” On the canceled list is: “CSI: New York,” “Golden Boy,” “Made in Jersey,” “Partners,” “Rules of Engagement” and “Vegas.” Next week, I’ll cover CW and Fox.

Q:

I’ve been watching old episodes of “Melrose Place” and wondered what Jamie Luner, who played Lexi Sterling, has been up to lately? -- Polly R. in Indiana

A:

The gorgeous and talented actress most recently starred in Lifetime Movie Network’s original movie, “The Perfect Boss,” which aired in late May (check local listings for possible re-airings, or you can wait for the DVD). In “Boss,” she reunited with her former “Melrose” co-star Linden Ashby, who played her husband on the show, Jamie Luner and played her fall guy in the Lifetime movie. Jamie looks back on her time on “Melrose” with affection, telling me: “I’m so fortunate to have been on such iconic shows that are so memorable. That time was such a chapter in all of our lives -- television was so different than it is today. It was such an impactful show on so many people. I get a little nostalgic about it, and I’m definitely recognized for it by a lot of people who have enjoyed it.” Jamie does have a few more projects in the works, which she can’t tell me about yet, but she promised to keep me in the loop as they arise. Dear J.K.: My heart is aching as I read your letter, trying to imagine how painful this lesson has been for you. The good thing is that I am certain you will never have to learn it again. Most dog owners know to keep the pooch away from chocolate. But what other doggy dangers lurk in and outside of the house? Some hazards are obvious: household cleaners, pesticides, rodent poisons, bug sprays, insect repellants, paint, paint thinners and art supplies, cosmetics, pool chemicals, drain uncloggers, fertilizers and detergents, as well as electrical sockets, cords and wires. Others tend to fly under the radar. Batteries, for example, might not raise a red flag. But batteries are bite-sized! Swallowing one whole may or may not be a major problem. But chewing a battery to the extent that its corrosive fluid leaks out could be a painful event that leads to serious health concerns for the dog. In this the era of technology, a household without batteries is unimaginable. So the best solution to this problem is prevention: the safe and secure storage of all batteries and any chewable objects they power. The fridge is a glowing Pandora’s box of items both delectable and dangerous for your dog. Chocolate, particularly dark chocolate, is high on the list of foods that are off-limits to your dog. Others are: -- Raisins and Grapes: Even in small numbers, raisins and grapes are toxic and can induce kidney failure in dogs. -- Garlic and Onions: Depending on the dose, the ingestion of onions and garlic can create a lifethreatening form of hemolytic anemia in dogs. -- Mushrooms: Sure, some mushrooms are harmless. But many species of mushrooms are harmful to dogs and can cause toxic shock and death. Unless you are a professional mycologist, don’t take any chances. Keep your dog away from all mushrooms. This includes “backyard” varieties, which should be plucked. -- Macadamia Nuts: If your dog consumes macadamia nuts, he might luck out with some minor gastrointestinal upset. But these nuts can also cause lethargy, muscle tremors and stiffness, and bladder stones. -- Avocado: At the center of an avocado sits a large pit that looks suspiciously similar to a ball. But even if your pooch avoids choking on the pit, avocados contain persin, which can be toxic to animals. Persin toxicity can damage the tissue of the heart and lungs and can cause pancreatitis. -- Caffeine and Alcohol: While some may find

Treating Fibromyalgia Requires Team Approach Fibromyalgia is a difficult medical condition. Treatment success is rare. Patients feel they are not taken seriously and frustrated physicians become unhelpful. As treatment involves medications that are often ineffective, the patient becomes frantic, seeing multiple physicians, who prescribe more and more medications that eventually lead to more harm than good. Recently in Canada, physicians from McGill University in Montreal and the University of Calgary in Alberta published updated guidelines on the diagnosis and treatment of fibromyalgia in the Canadian Medical Association Journal. They make a strong case that fibromyalgia patients should be treated by a primary care physician who has significant expertise in the complex factors involved in diagnosis and treatment. They discourage referring patients to rheumatologists because they are typically less available; they have a limited time, and long-term outcomes are less than ideal. Fibromyalgia is diagnosed clinically by identifying a constellation of symptoms that include severe pain that waxes and wanes and is accompanied by chronic fatigue, insomnia, cognitive changes, depression and abdominal pain associated with constipation, diarrhea or both. The disease

YOUR

SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margenau

Shame on Everyone When It Comes to Lack of Progress on Social Security Reform Many people have asked me if I have written a book about Social Security. The answer is yes and no. The “yes” part of that answer alludes to the fact that I’ve had a Social Security book ready to go for many years now. The “no” part of the answer is that it hasn’t been published yet. And therein lies a story. About ten years ago, I had signed on with a literary agent who was peddling my Social Security advice book to a variety of publishers. She finally found one that was interested in the book. The manuscript was approved by a series of editors, all of whom thought the book was marketable and had good potential. We just needed the approval of the head of the publishing house, and I would have been on my way to the best-seller lists! But that publisher turned the book deal down. She said it was an excellent guidebook and great source of information about Social Security for people of all ages. “But,” she explained, “we all know that the Social Security program will soon be reformed, and those changes will instantly put your book out of date.” Well, that was almost a decade ago. Social Security still hasn’t been reformed, and my manuscript is just gathering dust on my bookshelf. I like to tell that story when people ask me about any imminent changes to Social Security. The message is: “Don’t hold your breath.” Everyone knows (well almost everyone knows) that Social Security needs to be reformed due to the financial burdens placed on the system by baby boomers that are turning into senior boomers in record numbers. Something like 10,000 boomers file for Social Security every day! Policy planners and politicians have known about this for decades. And for years, people have been talking about Social Security reform. But no one does anything about it. There is plenty of blame to go around. Liberals and Democrats deserve their share of the blame because they usually tend to put their heads in the sand and say: “What Social Security problem?” Conservatives and Republicans deserve praise for being willing to discuss Social Security reform. But then they also deserve their share of the blame because they frequently propose outlandish and totally unworkable solutions to the problem (such as “privatizing” the program). And the public at large deserves their share of the blame because they say they want reform, but they tend to vote otherwise. As I’ve pointed out many times in this column, if I ran for Congress on a

Tidbits of Coachella Valley

Page 11

platform of increasing the Social Security retirement age to 68, reducing future cost-of-living increases and raising the amount of income subject to Social Security tax (three viable solutions to Social Security’s long range fiscal problems); my opponent would run attack ads claiming that “a vote for Tom Margenau is a vote against seniors and working people”), and I would lose the election in a landslide. And a recent episode illustrates the games politicians (on both sides of the aisle) play when it comes to Social Security. As I alluded to earlier, Democrats should be ashamed of themselves for frequently refusing to put Social Security on the table. And Republicans should be praised for being willing to discuss “entitlement reform.” As part of the ongoing budget negotiations between President Obama and the Republican leadership in the House of Representatives, the president bucked the pressure he felt from some members of his own party and proposed a reduction in future cost-of-living increases for Social Security recipients. So you’d think that Republicans would have greeted that proposal with open arms. But what happened? Many of them immediately took to the airwaves and their Twitter accounts to blast the President for “trying to balance the budget on the backs of our poor deserving senior citizens.” And that was the same thing many liberal Democrats had said when the president proposed COLA reforms in the first place. Do you see why Social Security reform can be so maddening and frustrating? Do you see why there is plenty of blame to go around for the lack of any meaningful changes? Do you see why Democrats should be ashamed of themselves? Do you see why Republicans should be ashamed of themselves? Do you see why the people/voters should be ashamed of themselves? I guess everyone wants reform, but they want reforms that impact the other guy. They don’t want their Social Security checks reduced or their grandma’s benefits cut, but they wouldn’t mind if that other, less-deserving guy’s benefits are reduced. And they don’t want their Social Security taxes raised or their children’s taxes raised, but they wouldn’t mind if that other guy’s payroll taxes are raised. I have written a fact sheet that offers weighted solutions to Social Security’s long-range financial problems. It not only lists proposed reforms, but it tells you how effective those reforms would be. In

other words, it spells out how much of Social Security’s long-range deficit would be wiped out by each reform. I will email you an electronic copy of this free fact sheet if you send a request to thomas.margenau@comcast.net. (This is the same fact sheet I’ve offered in past columns, so people who have requested it before won’t need to get another one.)

If you have a Social Security question, Tom Margen au has the answer. Contact him at thomas.margenau@comcast.net. He said he would return with his crew and tools the following day to start work. Of course he cashed the check and never returned. She said she felt so dumb she did not even tell her family. Last week, her daughter, who lives out of state, came to so visit. After she left, we asked her if she told her daughter about the scam. She said, “No. I am afraid to do so because she might think I’m not capable of living independently any more.” We love this lady and think she should keep her daughter posted. Should we contact her ourselves and let her know?

They are added to soups, sauces, pasta, baked goods and dairy products in order to help foods stick together, stop ice crystals from forming, and to make food creamier. • The mighty, versatile potato has many other uses in addition to food. A product made from potatoes is used by oil well drillers in order to keep their drills dry enough to keep the friction high. Potato starch was used in the early days of color photography, and vodka is made from distilled potatoes. Potato starch is now being made into “plastic” bags which decompose when buried. Potatoes are also used in manufacturing of plastics, medicines, paper, cloth, glue, and candy.
