Q:

I thought that “Eastbound and Down” was over, that the third season was its last season. Now I hear there is a new season coming. Is this true? -- Larry T., Philadelphia, Pa.

A: Originally, “Eastbound and Down” was

supposed to be only three seasons. Danny McBride and company ended the series in a hilarious way that only they could. However, HBO (and perhaps pressure from die-hard fans like us) convinced Danny, Will Farrell and the rest of the crew to return for a fourth season. I, for one, am thrilled, as this has been a highlight of my sitcom-watching career. The fourth -- and supposedly final -- season of HBO’s “Eastbound and Down” is scheduled to premiere Sept. 29. ***

‘The Mentalist,’ ‘Brothers and Sisters’ and ‘The Ugly Truth’) is a potential love interest. He’s great -- I love him. He plays a bomb-squad tech that Maura is attracted to.” Because of my affinity for “Dawson’s Creek,” I had to ask her about her time there. “I had a wonderful experience. I love that I went to the prom with Dawson. James (Van Der Beek), Michelle (Williams), Josh (Jackson) and I are still dear friends. We don’t have shows like that anymore. I love the innocence and the beauty of that show. It was a really fun experience for me, and Sasha Alexander it was a really positive show. I wish there were something like it on the air now.” *** TUES., JAN. 24

Everyday CHEAPSKATE

®

by Mary Hunt

The Power of Gratitude A while ago, you may recall, I challenged my readers to dump their negative thoughts, which can so easily lead to negative and destructive behaviors. The assignment was simple: Write down 10 things for which you are grateful. I even suggested that they send me their lists. My mailboxes ® were sizzling for days. Now, weeks later, lists are still trickling in. The responses were all heartwarmby Mary Hunt ing, but perhaps none as poignant as the one from Allie, a high school student. “I am having a really tough time in high school right now, and even though most times I have positive thoughts and attitudes, sometimes it gets really hard, but I usually catch myself and try to reverse the negative thoughts into positive ones. After reading this I wanted to send you my 10 good things in life. 1. I have a caring family. 2. I have amazing friends. 3. I have the opportunity to wake up in the morning. 4. I am able to watch the snow fall. 5. I am able to go skiing with my friends in the winter. 6. I was able to be at the beach this last summer for a whole week without my parents. 7. I was blessed to have a special person in my life that is now in a better place. 8. I have another very special person who is always there and I can always talk to about anything. 9. I am able to read great books. 10. Last summer I was able to have a dream come true and attend a concert of my favorite singer. “Thank you for reminding me of all these wonderful times and people in my life. Every time I find myself getting negative, I will try and remember each of these special times and people that God has blessed me with and that you have reminded me of. Thank you so much. -- Allie” Not long after receiving Allie’s message,

I picked up Deborah Norville’s book, “Thank You Power.” In it she presents the latest research on the impact of positive emotions in our lives. The influence of gratitude is quantifiable both physically and emotionally. Simply being thankful and making it a point to recognize those good things will positively change our lives. She presents scientific proof that we will be happier, healthier and better able to handle the stresses of daily life simply by saying thank you. I hope Allie is reading this so she will know that she’s not the only one who was impacted by her willingness to be grateful for the good things in her life. Reading her message filled my heart to overflowing. Then I passed it around the office. In a kind of ripple effect, the Allie letter touched each of us in a positive way. And now the ripple effect goes on because I know Allie has touched your life in a positive way, too. Want to dump your destructive negative feelings? Start writing. Just 10 things. And yes, my mailbox is still open for business! While you’re thinking about it, pick up a copy of Deborah’s book. It’s one you will want to own so you can read it often. It’s short, easy-to-read and carries a powerful message -- one that can change your life.

If you’re a veteran who is struggling to find ways to improve your life, perhaps because you’re dealing with a service-related issue, I invite you to take a look at Make the Connection, a website run by the Department of Veterans Affairs. Make the Connection is a one-stop site for a wide variety of concerns affecting veterans: homelessness, jobs and employment, family and friends, mental-health concerns, transitioning from the service, dealing with physical injury - and more. Most impressive and useful is the Signs & Symptoms section. It’s long, with dozens of symptoms, including flashbacks, feeling on edge, noise or light irritation, confusion, trouble sleeping, nightmares, and others. Each section is broken into three parts. The first part is, “What can I do about it right away?” The steps aren’t silly, either; they’re ones a Mary Hunt is the founder of www.DebtProofLiving. counselor or medical adviser likely would talk about com and author of 23 books, including her 2012 release, “7 first. For search-and-rescue dogs, saving lives is all in a day’s work. But these furry heroes don’t all work the same. Nose to the ground. Nose in the air. Not to oversimplify things, but up or down, it’s all in the position of the nose. Trackers, or tracking dogs, put their nose to the ground and get busy. These dogs work from a “last seen” starting point and require something with the missing person’s scent. Trackers don’t search; they follow. They are the dogs you call when a child goes missing on the way to school, when a dementia patient wanders off, when a prisoner escapes. For air-scenters, it’s all up in the air -- especially the nose. These highly trained hounds pick up human scent in the air and follow it to its source, whether that be “somewhere” in a national park, in the wilderness, in a body of water or buried under 20 feet of snow in the case of avalanche victims. Air-scenters also are the dogs brought in for what is considered the most challenging of searchand-rescue missions: the urban disaster. In this sense, urban is as much Moore, Okla., in the wake of the recent spate of tornadoes as it was Ground Zero on 9/11. “Urban disaster” refers to a large-scale search for survivors or casualties after the collapse of a building or buildings for any reason -- earthquake, flood, hurricane, tornado, fire, accident or terrorism. After an EF-5 tornado ripped through Moore this month, more than 100 people feared dead were rescued from the rubble and debris. Many of them have an air-scenter to thank for that. FEMA’s certification requirements are the only national standards for search-and-rescue teams wanting to specialize in urban disaster work, and those standards are very difficult to meet. According to “How Search and Rescue Dogs Work” by Julia Layton, “Fewer than 100 dog/handler teams in the country are FEMA certified. Local SAR organizations have their own standards for ‘mission ready’ qualification, typically based on guidelines developed by organizations like the American Rescue Dog Association and the National Association for Search and Rescue.” Generally speaking, in order to get anywhere near the rescue end of an urban disaster, a dog must demonstrate competency in the areas of basic obedience, professionalism, mental and physical ability, and tracking skills. But more than size or

Peripheral neuropathy is a major cause of distressing pain and disability. To understand the condition, begin with the name. The body has two main nervous systems: the central nervous system, including the brain and the spinal cord, and the peripheral nervous system, including nerves that link the brain and spinal cord to everything else -- arms and hands, legs and feet, internal organs, joints and so forth. “Neuropathy” means damage to nerve cells, muscle movement and strength. Peripheral neuropathy involves damage to the nerves in the hands and the feet. These nerves control sensation, including pain, heat, cold and touch, as well as motor nerves that regulate muscle movement. Occasionally nerves responsible for balance, blood pressure and bowel function may be affected. Earliest symptoms are numbness and tingling in the toes and fingers that gradually worsen, causing burning, sharp pain that feels like electricity and increased sensitivity to touch. Simply touching the soles of the feet can cause unbearable discomfort. Loss of nerve supply to muscles leads to weakness, impaired gait and balance and even paralysis. In the worst cases, bowel and bladder problems develop, and difficulties in regulating blood pressure can occur. The two most common causes -- by far -are long-term alcohol abuse and diabetes. Alcohol can damage nerves directly or indirectly by poor diet and malnutrition. Diabetes causes damage to tiny arteries throughout the body. This is referred to as diabetic microangiopathy, and it leads to impaired blood supply to the nerves in the hands and the feet and hence, the peripheral neuropathy that affects half of all diabetics. Rarer causes of peripheral neuropathy include chemotherapy-induced damage to nerves, exposure to toxins, such as heavy metals and certain infections, including HIV, Lyme disease, infectious mononucleosis and chronic hepatitis. Peripheral neuropathy can also occur when nerves are damaged by injuries or benign or malignant tumors. Liver or kidney disease and impaired thyroid function can lead to peripheral neuropathy, as can deficiencies of vitamins B-1, B-6 and B-12. Sometimes an immune reaction causes peripheral neuropathy. The most common is Guillain-Barre syndrome, in which inflammation causes

YOUR

SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margenau

‘I’m Getting the Wrong Amount’ Is a Common Gripe Q: A short while ago, you wrote a column about women who shared complaints about their Social Security benefits while on a cruise. Well, I wish I could afford to take a cruise so I could complain about my Social Security problems. Here is my gripe: Since my exhusband died three years ago, I don’t think I’ve been getting enough money. We were married for 30 years and got a divorce about 10 years before he died. I never remarried, but he did. He was an architect and made big money. After talking to other women, I think I should be getting more than $2,050 in widow’s benefits. Is the fact that he remarried and has another widow lowering the amount I’m getting? Don’t tell me to go to my Social Security office for help. That place is a zoo! Can I simply write a letter to Social Security to appeal the fact that I think I am being paid incorrectly? A: Before I give you some advice, let me tell you this. Based on my 32 years of experience working for the Social Security Administration, and the 15 years I’ve been writing this column, I can tell you that the number one complaint I hear from people -- by far -- is this: “I don’t think I am getting the right Social Security benefit amount.” And here is a surprise: Not once in the past four decades have I ever heard anyone allege that he or she was getting too much money! I guess that’s just human nature. People tend to believe they are being cheated out of something that everyone else is getting. Ad Proof: I think this phenomenon results when senior citizens start talking and comparing governBram’s ment benefit amounts. The person getting less in1/16th page, BW, 26x rate [$59/wk] evitably feels as if he or she has been left holding Jan. 22 -end April 15,Social 2012Security stick. What they the short of the don’t understand is that there are literally dozens [Volume 8: Issue #4 -#16] of variables that determine the Wed. amount01/18/12 of a Social Corrections due by: 5 pm, Security check: date of birth, earnings history, your age when you filed for benefits, early retirement reductions, late retirement bonuses, etc. Readers who follow this column know that I am often critical of SSA and the service the organization provides. But I can tell you there is one thing they are very good at: SSA is very careful and very accurate about calculating Social Security ben-

Tidbits of Coachella Valley

Page 11

efits. There have been countless studies done by Congress and other oversight agencies concerning the accuracy of Social Security payments. And the studies show that SSA pays the right benefit amount something like 99 percent of the time. I should clarify that I am talking about the accuracy of the initial calculation of a person’s basic Social Security benefit amount. People getting ongoing Social Security checks can be paid incorrectly from time to time. But that’s usually because SSA has faulty information. For example, a person who is working and making more than the earnings penalty limit fails to inform the government of his or her income, resulting in benefits being paid that were not due. Those kinds of “overpayments” are common. But the person’s basic Social Security benefit amount is still accurate. So now back to your question. First, I can tell you that your benefit rate is not affected at all by the fact that your ex-husband had a second wife. If she is getting a widow’s benefit on his record, it has no impact on what you are getting. Or to put that another way, anything she is due does not offset what is payable to you. And by the same token, anything you are due does not offset what she can get from his account. Second, it is simply too late to file a legal appeal of your benefit rate. As a general rule, you have 60 days to ask SSA to reconsider any decision they make about your Social Security benefits. In other words, when they sent you an “award letter” three years ago telling you about your eligibility for divorced widow’s benefits, you had two months from the date of that letter to ask them to review your widow’s computation if you thought the benefit rate was wrong. As you suggested, you could simply write a letter to SSA asking for an explanation of your benefit rate. But I don’t think that will work. Think of it this way: If you had a Sears washing machine that broke down, would you write a letter to Sears asking them to fix it? Of course you wouldn’t. You would either call them or visit your local Sears store to seek some help. And that’s what you should do with your Social Security problem. I recommend you contact SSA at 800-772-1213 and see if someone can help you over the phone. If that doesn’t work, I suggest you bite the bullet and pay a visit to your local Social Security office. Plan to spend a little time there. Take a book and pack a lunch! If the front desk person can’t or

Although his attitude is fairly normal, it’s not the wisest one. However, many young people are questioning whether going to college is worth the time and effort, or if it even guarantees larger salaries than just on-the-job training. Unless a student is willing and has the grades and money to afford advanced degrees to become a doctor, a legal professional or work in a technical vocation, it becomes debatable. Those with only a high school degree who don’t have corporate connections or some other inside track may never rise above a low-grade pay level. One career counselor I know remarked: “If you go to college, don’t major in something that can be done by a computer or can be outsourced cheaper to China or India.” Employers now will seldom guarantee a better position or higher pay since they are so overloaded with applicants. From a broader point of view, earning a degree generates more self-esteem in becoming recognized as a doer, offers the opportunity to enjoy a

Sun Shines on Tea Set Q:

The enclosed photo features a porcelain tea set that is a ser vice for six. It has been in our family for years and was given to me in 1946 for my wedding. Each piece is marked with the letters “R.S. Japan -- Made in Japan” and with the image of the rising sun. The set includes a teapot, a cream pitcher, sugar bowl, dessert plates, cups and saucers. Each piece is decorated with a luster glaze and all are in excellent condition. What can you tell me about my tea set?

Tea set was a wedding gift in 1946.

A:

As a rule, porcelain marked “Made in Japan” was made after 1920. The mark with rising sun image that you described was used from the late 1940s. Similar tea sets made in Japan are usually worth $125 to $175. * * *

Dedham Pottery was located in Dedham, Mass.

A:

Your plate was made by Dedham Pottery in Dedham, Mass. The pottery was founded in 1866 as Chelsea Keramic Art Works in Chelsea, Mass. In 1889, they closed and reopened several years later as Chelsea Pottery U.S. The name was finally changed to Dedham Pottery when they relocated to Dedham in 1896. The glaze is known as gray craquelle and was developed by owner, Hugh Robertson. The spider-web veining was achieved after the firing process and during the cooling. The cobalt blue animals, birds and flowers were hand painted by their accomplished decorators. Joseph Linden Smith designed the rabbit motif, and it was so popular that it was decided to use as the company logo. Rabbits that face left were found on early pieces and highly prized by collectors. Also, pieces signed by the decorator are very desirable and more valuable than those without a signature. The pottery closed in 1943 due to escalating manufacturing costs and a limited number of skilled artisans. Collectors alert: Dedham pottery has been reproduced in Massachusetts for over 25 years. Your early 1900 plate would probably be worth $250 to $350. Address your questions to Anne McCollam, P. O. Box 247, Notre Dame, IN 46556. Items of a general interest will be answered in this column. Where Tebow Goes, We Go (Again) The initial question at the press conference for the New England Patriots’ early summer training camp said it all. “Coach, I cover politics for a TV station in New Hampshire, but I’m here today,” he said. Patriots coach Bill Belichick seemed unmoved by the man’s credentials (sportswriters laughed). The question wasn’t all that important or groundbreaking, despite the reporter’s Concord and Keene political pedigree. Essentially what he asked was, “What do you think of random guys like me showing up in Foxboro on a rainy day, for a mini-camp news conference, asking you questions about your presumed third-string quarterback?” Belichick, for all of his genius on the field and in the locker room, has never been known to be all that insightful or giving to the press at conferences like these. Patient and reserved, he was asked more than a dozen times about newly signed Tim Tebow, and he gave the same exact answer each time: We signed him because he’s a talented player who is smart and works hard, and we thought he could help the team blah blah blah, et cetera, ad nauseum. The twittersphere erupted when he was signed.“Not watching Sportscenter for at least the next few days. #Tebow” @Thepbird123 “ESPN is applying the proper amount of coverage to #Tebow, in the same way Tammy Faye Bakker applied the proper amount of makeup.” @DamonBruce The sports talk radio spectrum was abuzz (I don’t think you can call radio a “sphere”). As I spun the dial, the conversation was essentially the same: We are all talking about this signing; we are all talking about this guy; and why are we spending so much time talking about this signing or this guy? If there’s anything I truly dislike about Tim Tebow it’s that he somehow inspires an awful lot of metajournalism (newsmen talking about the news business), but that’s not his fault. And while most people wouldn’t come out and admit it, the reason why he garners so much attention is because he is outwardly Christian -- not because he had an exciting run as the Broncos quarterback a few seasons ago and won a playoff game. He is not despised for being a Christian; just the opposite, he is revered for his beliefs, and that is what appears to rankle people the most. Tavaris Jackson had a run with the Seattle Seahawks a few seasons ago, and on the same day Tebow was signed by New England, Jackson was cut by the Buffalo Bills. Tebow’s story garnered nearly 3,000 news stories, according to Google News. Jackson’s plight? Not so much ... about 222. So yeah, it’s the Christian thing. Everybody seems to want to throw the guy to the lions (Detroit, like the rest of the NFL and the Canadian Football League, passed), but that’s not going to happen in New England. No, on Sundays, the only talk about resurrection will be confined to the chapels and churches of New England, not Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Mass. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in Kansas City. (c) 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

Wide stance for driver The dreaded pop-up is one of the most common misses when hitting with the driver. This is generally the result of the downswing being too steep. To promote a more shallow swing, widen your stance at address when hitting your driver. Your feet should be just wider than your shoulders. If you feel that your shoulder turn is limited or your weight transfer is off, then you have widened your stance too much.
