week Tidbits looks at the life of the woman whose unusual sharpshooting abilities astounded audiences around the world and earned her the nickname “Little Sure Shot.”

• Once reunited with her mother and siblings, Annie set to work providing for the large family. She began hunting game for money, selling it to local people as well as restaurants and hotels in southern Ohio. Her unusual ability as an accurate shooter enabled her to bag more kills than any grown man in the area. Her reputation as a sharpshooter grew in the region, and by age 15 her success in peddling the meat from the wild game she bagged eventually paid off the mortgage on her mother’s farm.

Ice Cream (from page one) mountains to obtain snow to be mixed with sweet fruits and juices. • In the 13th century when explorer Marco Polo returned to his native Italy from his travels in the Far East, he brought home a recipe very similar to our sherbet of today. “Cream Ice” was on the table of England’s King Charles I. After more than a century as a dessert exclusively for royalty, ice cream was made available to the general public for the first time in 1670 at Café Procope, one of the first cafés in Paris. • The first known mention of ice cream in North America was in 1777 in an advertisement by a confectioner that appeared in The New York Gazette newspaper, informing readers that the tasty treat was available at his establishment “almost every day.” • President George Washington was a great lover of ice cream, with records indicating that the first chief executive spent $200 on ice cream during the summer of 1790. Among Washington’s personal effects at the time of his death were two pewter ice cream pots. James Madison was another president who was fond of the treat, and his wife Dolley made sure it was served at his Inaugural Ball in 1813. • America’s first patent for an ice cream cone was issued in 1903 to Italo Marchiony, an Italian immigrant who created his invention in New York City. The previous year the St. Louis World’s Fair featured a vendor selling crisp waffle pastries, who happened to have his booth next to an ice cream merchant. When the ice cream booth ran out of dishes, Marchiony stepped in, rolling his waffles into cone shapes. The rest, as they say, is history.

An old spool and bobbin mill was their next location, where they first began packing their ice cream in pints to sell in bulk. Offering a variety of flavors and smoothness that the public liked, they began to open franchise locations in 1981. Their product can now be found in 26 countries around the world. They achieved a considerable amount of publicity and recognition in 1983 when Ben and Jerry’s ice cream was used as the ingredients for the world’s largest ice cream sundae, a mammoth creation weighing 27,102 lbs.!

• Oakley had such precise aim that, at the request of the newly-crowned German Kaiser, Wilhelm II, she knocked the ash off a cigarette he held in his mouth. It was later said that if Annie had shot Wilhelm and not his cigarette, she might have prevented World War I. After the outbreak of that war, Oakley in fact did send a letter to the Kaiser, now a U.S. enemy, requesting a second shot. The Kaiser did not respond.

ALL ABOUT BABY FOOD It seems there’s an observance for just about everything at one time or another. The third week of July is National Baby Food Week, so this week Tidbits is looking into the history of this necessity that most new mothers wouldn’t want to be without. • Swiss pharmacist Henri Nestlé is credited as the inventor of the first artificial infant food in 1867. At the request of a friend whose infant could not nurse naturally or digest fresh cow’s milk, Nestlé created a mixture of malted wheat and sweetened condensed milk. He was soon selling 500,000 boxes of Nestlé’s Milk Food annually. By the late 1880s, there were several brands for parents to choose from, mostly grain mixtures that were to be mixed with milk.

• When a nationwide poll queried participants as to the identity of the Gerber baby, guesses included movie icons Humphrey Bogart and Elizabeth Taylor and politicians Richard Nixon and Bob Dole. Many believed it was Sally Gerber. The baby’s identity was kept secret until 1978, when it was revealed that the Gerber trademark was actually Ann Turner Cook, daughter of a cartoonist. Today, 86-year-old Ann is a retired schoolteacher who resides in Florida and is a published author of mysteries.

• In 1941, the Gerber Company was producing one million cans of baby food every week. They abandoned the production of all adult products and began manufacturing only baby food, leading to their famous advertising slogan “Babies are our business…our only business.” With the Gerber name now synonymous with baby food, the company now controls over 80% of the nation’s baby food market.

Got plans for air travel this summer? Here are some handy tricks to land the cheapest fares possible. But first, a little story ... Weather delays that caused one of my flights to circle over Dallas -- for ®what seemed like forever -- brought out the chatter bug in me and several of my by seat-mates. Don’t wait until the weekend to buy your tickets because fares tend to creep back up by then, adds travel expert Peter Greenberg. CHEAPEST DAYS TO FLY. The cheapest days to fly are Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday, says Seaney. It’s all about supply and demand and since historically these are the days that fewer businesspeople fly, more seats are available. And the cheapest time to fly is the first flight of the day, flights that originate around noon and those at dinnertime. Why? Most people don’t want to have to get up that early to get to the airport, nor do they

During the season of beach bods and sixpack abs, it’s hard to remember that fitness isn’t just about looks. It’s about health -- and not just physical health. Fitness is also about mental acuity, good behavior and an all-around feeling of happiness. This is true for humans, and it’s true for dogs. No doubt you’ve heard the saying: A tired dog is a good dog. Well, it’s almost accurate. If a dog who hasn’t been out for so much as a walk around the block since winter suddenly finds himself jogging across town under a blazing sun, he’ll be tired, all right. But he might also get injured. Or be in pain. Or dehydrated. This is not the objective, and it could backfire, as pain, injury and illness can trigger aggression. Nor is it the goal of exercise to simply tire your dog out by setting him loose in the yard to mindlessly run around in circles. Tired is good. But tired in the right way is best. What’s the right way? Depends on the dog. While it’s true that any exercise is better than none, in most cases, owners and dogs exercising together is optimal for many reasons: -- You are there to bear witness to any injury your dog may suffer. Prompt attention and temporary restriction of activity if necessary can prevent a minor injury from becoming severe. -- Your participation allows you to tailor the type of exercise to your dog’s needs. For example, herding dogs are intelligent and high energy by nature. Sports, games or even an obstacle course in the backyard will satisfy their need for physical exercise and mental stimulation. A Chihuahua, on the other hand, might be turned into a jittering bundle of nerves by such a regimen. This small breed’s exercise requirements would be easily satisfied with a couple of half-hour walks a day. -- Exercising with your dog makes the entire experience as much about bonding as about getting in shape. If you carve out time every day for exercising with your dog and customize that exercise to accommodate his breed and your lifestyle, you will have created something that will both lengthen and strengthen your relationship, as well as your muscles. Here are a few ideas of the kind of exercise

Steroid injections for back pain increase the risk of fractures. Many patients with chronic back pain who do not respond to conservative measures are referred to a pain specialist. Following a careful workup to identify the abnormality causing the pain, local steroid injections are often recommended. Although such treatment is thought to be relatively safe, a study published in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery showed that every steroid injection increased the risk of a fracture in that area by 21 percent. The researchers analyzed outcomes in 3,450 patients with back pain who received at least one steroid injection and compared their outcomes to 3,000 back pain patients who never received an injection. Those treated with injections had a significantly higher risk of vertebral fractures. Steroids cause bone weakness; they impair bone integrity, leading to a greater risk of a fracture. While these findings will lead to more caution about local steroid injections, they still should be used where appropriate -- but as infrequently as possible. So what are the causes of back pain and what are the principles of its treatment? Sudden back pain occurs after serious injuries, from lifting heavy objects or from inappropriate posture. Chronic back pain can occur because of narrowing of the spinal canal (spinal stenosis), herniation or degeneration of disks between the vertebra, osteoarthritis of the spinal joints or an abnormality called spondylolisthesis, where one vertebra slides either forward or backward over the one below. Osteoporosis can weaken bone sufficiently that minor injury can collapse a vertebra or collapse could occur spontaneously. Muscle spasm is a major cause of severe pain in the back. Often associated with stiffness, the pain can be overwhelming and is felt in the low back and buttocks. Frequently the pain is mistakenly thought to come from the hip. Pain also occurs because of nerve irritation that leads to pain radiating down the leg and below the knee. This is often called sciatica. Nerve damage can also cause numbness, tingling and burning, most frequently felt in the feet. Not every person who arrives at the doctor’s office with significant back pain needs an immediate X-ray or imaging studies. However, testing must be done if the damage to nerves is severe

YOUR

SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margenau

Suspension Versus Withdrawal Q: I retired and filed for my Social Security benefits when I was 62 years old. I am now a couple months away from my 63rd birthday, and I’ve decided I can’t live on my Social Security check. So I plan to go back to work full-time. I called Social Security and told them I wanted to withdraw my retirement claim. They sent me a form to sign, but told me I would have to repay all the benefits I’ve received in the last 10 months. This will be a hardship for me. But I don’t know what else to do. What do you advise?

A: I don’t think you should withdraw your Social Security retirement claim. I think you should simply suspend your benefits and have them start up again when you choose to retire for the second time. I am very surprised that the Social Security worker did not offer this option to you. Let’s go over each of these two options. If you proceed with the withdrawal, there would be an advantage and a disadvantage. The advantage is that when you start up your benefits again, they will come with no early retirement reduction for the months you’ve already received Social Security benefits. But the big disadvantage is that you will have to write a check for thousands of dollars to repay every nickel you’ve received in Social Security payments during the past 10 months. You said this would be financially difficult to do. If you choose to suspend your benefits instead, there are also plusses and minuses. On the plus side, you won’t have to pay back a dime to the Social Security Administration. On the minus side, your eventual Social Security benefit will come with a reduction, but only a reduction for the 10 months you’ve already received benefits. To help you understand this more clearly, I’ll use an example. You didn’t tell me how much your Social Security check was, so I’ll make up some numbers to help explain your options. Let’s say your full (age 66) retirement benefit is $2,000 per month. That means your reduced retirement monthly benefit at age 62 would have been $1,500. And let’s further say that you plan to continue working until age 66. If you were to withdraw your claim, you would have to write a check to SSA for $15,000 ($1,500 per month times 10 months equals $15,000). At age 66, your benefits would start up again at your full retirement rate of $2,000. (Actually, your benefit would be slightly higher because you will have three additional years of earnings to factor into your retirement computation. The same would be true for the withdrawal option. But to keep my math simple, I’m just going to stick with the $2,000 figure.) If you simply suspend your benefits, you don’t owe SSA anything. At age 66 when you retire, your ongoing Social Security retirement rate will be $1,900. Where did I get that number? As I said earlier, your benefit will be reduced only for those 10 months that you received a Social Security check before the suspension went into place. The early retirement reduction is roughly one-half of one percent. For more teasers log on to So that means an ongoing reduction of five percent www.TriviaGuy.com must be applied to your retirement checks. Or to put that the other way around, you will get 95 percent of your full benefit from age 66 on. 95 percent of $2000 is $1,900. So using the suspension option, you only lose

Tidbits of Coachella Valley

Page 11

$100 per month. And it would take you 150 months, or 12 1/2 years to get to the $15,000 you would have spent to go the withdrawal route. In other words, if you think you’re going to live until at least 78 1/2, then you are financially ahead in the long run to withdraw your claim. But even if you think you’re going to live that long, I wouldn’t do it. Do you really think it is worth waiting until you are almost 80 years old to recoup all that money? There is one further point I need to make to other readers who might consider withdrawing a Social Security claim: It can only be done within one year of the date you filed for benefits in the first place. * * * Q: In a past column, you mentioned something you called ARF. I remembered the term and remembered thinking it might apply to me, but I can’t remember what it meant. Can you explain it again?

A: ARF stands for “adjustment to the reduction factor.” That’s a bit of in-house SSA jargon for the procedure alluded to in the answer to the first question when I was discussing the benefit suspension option. ARF will come into play anytime anyone took reduced retirement benefits but then returned to work and has some of his or her Social Security checks withheld because of the earnings penalty provisions of the law. To explain this, I’ll use a slightly different example than the one described above. Let’s say Mary took her benefits at age 62. Her full age-66 rate was $1,600 per month. Her reduced age-62 benefit came out to $1,200 with a 25 percent early retirement reduction. Mary works part time and makes $5,000 more than the annual Social Security earnings threshold. The law says half of that, or $2,500, must be withheld from her annual Social Security benefits. So each year between age 62 and 66, SSA will hold back two of her monthly checks and take another $100 out of a third check to recoup that $2,500 she owes to the government. When Mary reaches age 66, the earnings penalty goes away and she is due all her benefits from that point on. At the same time, the ARF procedure is automatically triggered. Mary’s original early retirement reduction was 25 percent. But instead of 12 full checks per year, Mary only got nine full checks (two checks were withheld and one was a partial payment). That means in the four years between age 62 and 66, Mary received only 36 full Social Security checks. So

her ongoing retirement benefit can only be reduced for those 36 months. At roughly a one-half of one percent reduction per month, that means Mary’s retirement benefit from age 66 on will be reduced by only 18 percent, instead of the initial 25-percent reduction applied to her when she filed for Social Security at age 62. Completing our example, that means that once the ARF recomputation is completed, Mary’s ongoing monthly benefit will be $1,312.

with linens and blankets to be used when they became wives and homemakers. The cedar wood was fragrant and also repelled moths. Lane Company made chests in a wide variety of styles and woods. Their Art Deco waterfall design was one of the most popular. Today, Furniture Brands International owns Lane Company. I have sent the mark that is on the bottom of a china cake plate that I recently bought at an antiques shop. It is decorated with multi-colored sprigs of petite flowers against a white background and trimmed in gold. I know nothing about the histor y of my plate and would appreciate any information you can provide

A:

Adderley Ltd. has been located in Longton, Staffordshire, England, since 1906. Bone china is a term for a mixture of feldspar, kaolin and bone ash. Strength and a snow-white body are the results of adding bone ash to the formula. English potters developed the formula around 1800. It was their solution for their search for a way to produce china similar to the hard paste porcelain that was made in China. FYI. At one time, all porcelain was made in China, thus the name “china.” Bone ash was the byproduct of animal bones, usually from cattle. English china and bone china are interchangeable terms. Adderly used this mark between 1912 and 1926. Your cake plate would probably fetch $50 to $100 in an antiques shop.

Adderley Ltd. was located in Staffordshire, England.

Cedar Hope Chests such as this were often given as graduation gifts.

John Lane along with his son, Ed Lane, founded Standard Red Cedar Chest Company in Altavista, Va., in 1912. They had little experience in chest manufacturing and didn’t want to use their family name to identify the company until it proved to be successful. Their cedar chests were also called Hope chests and were marketed to young women and brides to be. In the early 1900s, most young women PROMO - 3-10-2013 planned to marry rather than have careers. The Sideshow as Main Event Adrien Broner had a pretty good night in Brooklyn, N.Y., a few weeks ago. In front of 12,000 people, he became the first American boxer to simultaneously hold three championship belts, having just beaten Paulie Malignaggi in a split decision for the welterweight title. But to hear Broner tell it, the most satisfying part of the night involved a different kind of conquest. It wasn’t about the belt, it was about the accessories. “I beat Paulie,” Broner said through an 18-carat gold grill in the post-fight interview with Jim Gray. “I left (Brooklyn) with his belt ... and his girl!” Oh, snap! Malignaggi sure did. “Hey!” he yelled, breaking into the picture. “Don’t brag about taking my side piece!” It was a fitting conclusion for what was otherwise a pretty good fight. I had scored the fight 114-113 in favor of Malignaggi -- six rounds each minus a point deduction for Broner’s illegal blows. Also, I thought Malignaggi dictated the tempo of the fight better than Broner, who threw about four punches to his 10. But there was little doubt as to who the better “fighter” was -- and that was Broner. Malignaggi has zero power, but he proved without a doubt he could take a punch. Broner would have dropped most fighters in the lower weight classes with his power punches. One thing he definitely showed was his ability to drop down to the depths of classlessness with his post-fight proclamation. Men have been fighting over women since the beginning of time. The word “nemesis” has its etymological roots in Greek mythology. Nemesis was the mother of Helen of Troy -- the most foughtover woman in ancient folklore. Nemesis had a habit of seeking fights with those who she felt were acting too narcissistic. (She killed Narcissus by showing him his own reflection. He fell so in love with it that he stared at it without eating, drinking or sleeping until he died.) And both Caesar and Marc Antony had a thing over Cleopatra that led each to his demise. King Features has been documenting the running feud between Bluto and Popeye’s side piece, Olive Oyl, since the 1930s. Things got really nasty between Rocky Balboa and Clubber Lang when Lang said something off-color to Adrian. See, nothing new. The women are into it now, too. Serena Williams, who has beaten her nemesis Maria Sharapova 14 out of their past 16 matches, felt the need to rub it in by mentioning her ex in an interview with Rolling Stone -- who just happened to be Sharapova’s current boyfriend. Sharapova’s first Wimbledon interview began with her calling Serena a homewrecker for dating a married guy with children. So this is what it has come to ... the last of the taboos, finally broken. Of course columns like this only exacerbate the problem. Unfortunately, it’s more a commentary of what is needed to rise above the noise in today’s sporting world. Should Sharapova face Serena in the finals, it will set viewership records. Apparently, it’s not the main event that’s most important anymore, it’s the sideshow and, in some cases, the side piece. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in Kansas City.

ICE CREAM (from page page 3) commercial when he was just two years old. • Although thousands of creative flavors have been introduced by various vendors over the years, vanilla still takes the prize as the most popular flavor in America, followed closely by chocolate chip mint and cookies-and-cream. • There are numerous sort-of-similar products that go under the name of ice cream, but technically they are not. What’s the difference? Under federal law, real ice cream must contain at least 10 percent milkfat and weigh a minimum of 4.5 lbs. per gallon. “French” ice cream contains that 10 percent as well as at least 1.4% egg yolk solids. • The best-selling frozen ice cream novelty is the Klondike Bar, a square of vanilla ice cream coated with a thick layer of Swiss chocolate. It was the invention of a Swiss family named Isaly, who lived in Ohio. They created the confection in 1922 and named it after the Klondike River in Canada’s Yukon Territory. • It’s no surprise that studies show ice cream as the most-favored treat for summer enjoyment, and at any other time for that matter. The American Dairy Association estimates that the average person consumes about 8 pints of Ice cream per year, and families with children even higher. America consumes more ice Cream than any other country, with California leading the list. 

Professional Golf Tips with Tina Mickelson

Shoulders are the key 2 - No. 46

“l don’t care how much that thing helps you with your slice. You look like an idiot!”

When you are looking to produce a nice, high bunker shot the key is to keep the face of the club facing upward for as long as possible. You will feel like the club face is open, but it’s not. This prevents the club face from closing and digging into the sand, which causes those low screamers. You achieve this by turning your shoulders. Many amateurs dig down into the sand and don’t turn their shoulders into the followthrough. Turn your shoulders all the way to your followthrough, keeping your hands high in front of your chest, and your chest and front of your body, facing the target. This will achieve a higher, softer bunker shot and prevent those low screamers.
