HARLEY FACTS (from page one)
• Eight cycles were sold in 1905, and 50 the following year. While the only color that customers could order on the first Harley machines was black, each sported handpainted pinstripes and a hand-lettered “HarleyDavidson Motor Company” logo on the fuel tank. • Harley-Davidson expanded to a new factory site measuring 28’ x 80’ in 1906, and six fulltime employees were on staff. The following year their production total had increased to 150. As their motorcycle products and company name became better established, sales of the machines grew proportionately. By 1913, production had increased to such proportions that a new 297,110 sq. ft, factory headquarters was built. The new facility enabled the company to produce 12,904 cycles that year. • Seventeen years after the first cycle rolled out of the wooden backyard shed, Harley-Davidson had grown to the largest motorcycle company in the world, with dealerships in 67 countries. By 1920, the company was producing over 28,000 motorcycles per year. • Of all the country’s motorcycle manufacturers in business in 1929, only Indian and HarleyDavidson were able to weather the stock market crash. Production at H-D dropped from 22,350 bikes to 3,703. Sales to police forces helped them survive the economy’s collapse. • H-D profited greatly from the use of their motorcycles during war time. Over 20,000 Harleys were used during World War I, and nearly 90,000 were put into service during World War II. • In 1946, foreign motorcycles hit the American market and the competition with British and Japanese bikes was fierce. British imports had a sportier appearance and were cheaper and more reliable. Favorable tax laws governing imports made these bikes even more attractive to American buyers. • Although Harley-Davidson introduced the Hydra-Glide with the Panhead engine in an attempt to compete, it was a heavier machine and not nearly as sporty. As a result, H-D’s market share dropped to a mere six percent, and by 1950, 40 percent of the motorcycles in

Over the decades, Finland has banned many U.S. films, including “Dirty Harry,” “Walking Tall,” and “The Wild One,” starring Marlon Brando. The latter, with Brando’s role as a motorcycle-riding gangleader terrorizing a small town, was outlawed in Finland for 12 years, until it was finally released for public showing in 1966.

TIDBITS GETS ANALYTICAL ABOUT
SNEEZiNG We all do it! And animals do too. But why do we sneeze? Read on to learn some of the curious facts about this involuntary reaction that we all experience at one time or another -- which is, as they say, nothing to sneeze at! • The official name for sneezing is sternutation. It begins as a nerve transmission and is a signal telling your brain that something in your nose needs to come out. Something tickles the lining of your nose, and the nerves initiate a message to the brain stem, which causes a chain of events throughout the body in the chest, abdomen, face, eyelids, and mucus glands. All the areas work together to expel the irritant by forcing air, saliva, and mucus out of the mouth and nose. Sometimes it takes several sneezes to rid your nose of the irritant.

company is coming over. In Asia, it means someone is talking about you behind your back. And if your cat sneezes, it means it’s going to rain!
• The spontaneous utterance for a sneeze varies from language to language. For example, in English we say “ah-choo,” but the French say “atchoum,” Dollar Heaven the Japanese say “hakushon,” while Italians say “hapsu” and Swedes say 16th, 4c, 26x discount “atjo.” But no matter how you say it, a sneeze April 21, 2013 is still a sneeze. Gesundheit!
• There are a number of theories as to why folks say “Bless you” to someone after a sneeze. One is an ancient belief that sneezing is a neardeath experience, and it’s a blessing just to have survived. Primitive people also believed that the soul momentarily slips out of the body during a sneeze and that a blessing prevents the devil from gaining the opportunity to sneak in.

I’ve been rewatching one of my favorite shows, Masterpiece Myster y’s “Sherlock,” and I’m hoping you’ll tell me that it’ll be back for a third series. With Benedict Cumberbatch’s and Martin Freeman’s big-screen careers really taking off, I’m worried they won’t have time for this delightful PBS show. -- Darlene W., via e-mail

A:
Benedict and Martin are both on board for the third installment of the hit British mystery series -- as Sherlock Holmes and John Watson, respectively -- with “Sherlock” scheduled to begin airing new episodes in early 2014. You also can see them both together on the big Benedict Cumberbatch screen (again) in the second and third installments of “The Hobbit” trilogy -- as the Necromancer and Bilbo Baggins, respectively -- when “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” hits theaters on Dec. 13, 2013, and “The Hobbit: There and Back Again” on Dec. 17, 2014. ***

Readers Chime in with Great Tips for Summer Everyday CHEAPSKATE
If you could stand a little cooling relief now ® that summer is in full swing, today’s great reader tips just might do the trick. by Mary Hunt
GRAPE ICE. Frozen grapes work like ice cubes to chill white wine or other summer drinks, but without watering them down. And they look great, too. -- Des, via email SUMMER FUN. A visit to our local library recently reminded me that public libraries across the nation often have free concerts, puppet shows and other programs in the summer. Many events are geared toward kids. And the price is right. Check your local library’s website for information. -- Molly, Pennsylvania QUICK-RELEASE TRASH BAG. To avoid suction, which causes resistance, when removing bags from a trash can, drill a couple of holes in the bottom of the container. -- Bob, Kentucky ICE CREAM TRICK. For easier serving, cut ice cream with a knife. If serving ice cream from a round container, cut down the middle of the full container from top to bottom. Lay ice cream on its side, peel off the container and slice. -- Suzie, Colorado NO-DRIP ICE PACK. For do-it-yourself ice packs that don’t drip, saturate a sponge with water, place it in a zip-type freezer bag, and freeze. Use-

able straight from the freezer. -- Sid, Germany * * * Dear Readers: Recently, one of our reader-submitted tips had to do with rinsing browned ground beef in a colander, allowing the grease to “wash” away down the drain. Oh my, that tip certainly struck a dissonant chord with a number of readers. I heard about everything from septic tanks to county laws and all the reasons that this was not only distasteful, but the fact that I printed it could be grounds for arrest, although I’m not so sure about that. After all, I and millions of others in this country have garbage disposals, which are quite legal. We put all manner of stuff down them, including greasy things from time to time. However, given the impassioned pleas for me to “retract” that suggestion, I’ve chosen to print one of the nicest and most helpful responses that arrived in response to that dubious tip: Dear Mary: Please encourage your readers to not dispose of unwanted beef fat down the drain, as was suggested by your reader, Deidra, in a recent column. Instead, let the unwanted liquid solidify in a bowl. It separates into two parts. The top part is tallow, beef fat, and the bottom is actually useable beef stock. If the writer paid $2.50 a pound of the original 5-pound package of 20-percent fat content ground beef, then she is throwing away at least $2.50. Who the heck wants a hunk of tallow? Well, I bet, with the fast-growing hobby of soap-making, Deidra could find a local soap-maker, savonnier, who would gladly take it off her hands. Butchers have discovered that tallow soapers covet their fat trimmings. As a result, they have started charging for what they used to give away. Besides, disposing of the cooked-off liquid clogs up the system eventually. If you have budding savonniers out there, have them look up “tallow soapers” on Facebook. -- Carol Isler, Handcrafted Soapmaking Guild Certified Instructor

Gaming the Government Contracts System If you really want to defraud the government, it helps to have friends in high places. The House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform recently reviewed a situation wherein a man who never served in the military was given lucrative contracts with the IRS. Here are some facts that were revealed in the Committee’s report: The man (let’s call him X) sought a contract to provide information technology (IT) to the IRS through its contract acquisitions arm. He had a close relationship with the IRS deputy directory for IT Acquisition, and therefore got privileged information. Within six months he had a dozen contracts with the IRS, worth more than $500 million. The contracts X applied for were for small businesses: 1) owned by service-disabled veterans, and 2) in economically disadvantaged neighborhoods (called HUBZones). The report says X was able to “game the system” and get certification for both categories. How did X pull this off? He bought a small company that already had a top-secret security clearance. He rented an office in a Washington, D.C. HUBZone, even though he lived in a wealthy Virginia neighborhood. To cover the Service-Disabled VeteranOwned Small Business angle, X turned to an incident that happened 27 years ago: While a student at the U.S. Military Academy Prep School, he’d twisted his ankle playing football. It couldn’t have been too bad because the next year he went off to college and played football. Because of a glitch in the rules, he was able to do two things: 1) Get the Department of Veterans Affairs to start giving him benefits for service-related injury, and 2) parlay that twisted ankle into a lucrative government contract as a service-disabled veteran. And he had lots of help from the IRS to get his contracts. To read the 157-page report, go to http:// oversight.house.gov/ and search for Questionable Acquisitions: Problematic IT Contracting at the IRS. Freddy Groves regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible. Send email to columnreply2@gmail.com.

Inadvertently overlooked during his family’s chaotic departure for an overseas trip, 8-yearold Kevin McCallister finds himself “Home Alone.” Realizing his predicament, he does what any kid his age would do. He orders a pizza and jumps on the bed. Prematurely independent, he does all right by himself -- until something goes wrong. And doesn’t something always go wrong? These things that go wrong -- some little, some big -- aren’t necessarily “wrong.” They’re deviations from the way things played out in our head. They’re detours and obstacles our imaginations neglected to realize. They’re life. Life and its many surprises are why Kevin’s parents freak out when they realize their little boy is home alone. And life and its many surprises are why our companion animals should never be left alone for long. A jaw-dropping number of people feel their dog will be OK “just” for a weekend if left with plenty of food and water. What could possibly go wrong? He could eat something and get sick. He could panic and injure himself. He could conjure his inner escape artist and get lost or hit by a car while out searching for his person. He could bark himself silly and irritate the neighbors to no end. He could spill his water or use it to cool his paws, leaving none to drink and suffering dehydration as a result. Depending on the weather, he could develop hypothermia or heat exhaustion -- or even heat stroke, which could be fatal. Yes, some of these things could happen even when you are home. But the difference is that you are home. You can do something about it. You can drive him to a vet, administer first aid or CPR, refill his water bowl, dial 911. Even an 8-year-old has an advantage over a dog: opposable thumbs! Does this mean dog owners are never to leave home for longer than a workday? Of course not. It means dog owners need to have a plan in place that affords them peace of mind when they travel, a plan that ensures their dog will be safe. In this vein, dog owners have two options: a boarding facility or kennel, or a dogsitter. What should you look for in a boarding facility? The following: -- 24/7 supervision in case of fire, illness or other emergency CASEY’S CORNER: Turn to page 10

CASEY’S CORNER (from page 9) -- a place that requires all shots to be current for all animals -- cleanliness -- the option of individual kennels -- a place that works with an emergency animal hospital or vet clinic -- a staff that provides daily walks Pay any potential boarding facility an in-person visit to meet with the staff and check out the kennels and the rest of the facility. Check with your dog-loving friends and your vet for local referrals. Finally, investing in the cost of a trial run with the facility of your choice while you’re in town is the best way to achieve optimum peace of mind. If you feel your dog would be better off in the comfort of his home, it’s time to start looking for a reputable, reliable dogsitter. A dogsitter is someone who stays in your home with your dog for an agreed-upon daily rate. Someone who “drops by” once or twice a day is not what you want. Referrals are equally or more important when it comes to finding a dogsitter. You are entrusting this person with your dog, as well as your home. The ultimate dogsitter is someone you trust, someone who loves dogs and is experienced in the care and handling of dogs, someone with a valid driver’s license in case of an emergency and, of course, someone who gets your dog’s tail wagging! “Home Alone” has a happy ending and goes on for three more sequels thanks to the talent of the late screenwriter John Hughes. But in real life, we have to write our own happy endings. Woof! Medical tests are valuable, but when done for no good reason, they waste money. A study published in June in the Journal of the American Medical Association reported that cholesterol measurements were obtained too frequently in patients with known heart disease. Of a total of 35,000 heart patients at the Houston Veterans Affairs Network, 28,000 were treated with medications to lower cholesterol. Of these, approximately one third had more than one cholesterol measurement over an 11-month period despite being stable with no medication changes. Standard care suggests no more than one measurement annually. These unnecessary tests, totaling 13,000, cost this VA system more than $200,000. In an accompanying editorial, Dr. Joseph Drozda Jr. points out that the costs of these inexpensive tests add up quickly. The experience at the VA in Houston occurs at hospitals nationwide, adding billions to health-care costs. Meanwhile, many other blood tests are performed for no good reason and repeated too frequently. If done on the basis of sound scientific evidence of benefit, the cost savings would be enormous without affecting quality of care. Why are unnecessary tests ordered? At the VA there is no profit motive in doing unneeded tests. Here testing may be done because monitoring cholesterol is used as a performance measure of quality care. Showing that you are industrious about compulsively attempting to obtain target cholesterol levels in patients with heart disease may be rewarded with end-of-the-year pay raises or bonuses. As 2014 approaches and the Affordable Care Act becomes a reality, we must all pitch in to assure the highest possible medical care at a reasonable cost. It is said that as much as half of the $3 trillion health-care budget is consumed by unnecessary medical care and bloated and excessive administrative costs. There is not a single aspect of health care that is not to blame. Overprescribing medications is a serious concern, as is using expensive newer drugs over generics that work just as well. Too many tests are ordered, including routine blood measurements, X-rays, CAT scans and MRIs. Screening tests for cancer are done too frequently and continued beyond the age when no longer recommended. Too many diagnostic biopsies and surgeries are not needed and done when more conservative ap-

proaches are proved to work just as well. Patients make unnecessary appointments with specialists (their insurance plans are proud that “referral to a specialist is not needed”). Communication among doctors is inadequate; many physicians follow the same patient too frequently, repeating tests already done by others. Lack of communication and duplicative care by multiple physicians lead to uncoordinated and dysfunctional care. Not a day goes by that I do not see patients who in my view have been inappropriately treated. Here are some examples. Many patients with well-controlled high blood pressure or heart disease go to their cardiologists and have stress tests, echocardiograms, screening of their carotid arteries and even angiograms despite the fact that they are stable with no new complaints. Unless symptoms occur, taking these tests as a routine is of no proven value. A patient I saw recently told me he received a bill of close to $20,000 because of tests that were not needed and did not alter his care. Another example is a man of 85 who received a PSA to screen for prostate cancer. The American Urological Society states that at his age, this test should not be done. Because his PSA was elevated, further testing was recommended. Wisely, he refused a biopsy but was treated with medications to eradicate his testosterone level. At his age, this led to forgetfulness, severe weakness, fatigue, osteoporosis, difficulty walking and a poor quality of life. There is no evidence that the treatment he received would prolong his life or cure his cancer, if indeed he had any. And I will never forget the robust 78-yearold woman who paid $125 to receive a CT scan to screen for coronary artery disease. Totally symptom free, she was told that open heart surgery was essential. As a consequence of complications from that surgery, she spent the remaining years of her life in a nursing home. Not only is the need for surgery in an asymptomatic woman of this age highly questionable, but a CT scan should not have been done. We should all be aware of unnecessary and unneeded care. Not only is it breaking the bank, the consequences can be truly horrid.

YOUR
SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margenau
Sometimes Less Really Can Be More I’ve written more than a few columns lately about folks who complain because they think the government is cheating them out of Social Security benefits. So many people are convinced that their Social Security benefits were figured incorrectly. I tell them that they should talk to someone at their local Social Security office who can go over the benefit computation with them. They almost always learn that they are being paid correctly. But they still aren’t happy. Lately, I’ve heard more than a few of these kinds of gripes from my readers. And they reminded me of a man I met in the early days of my career working for the Social Security Administration. But his complaint was different: He was the only person I ever met who said that he was getting too much money! I’d like to share his story with you. The story dates back to 1973. I was working in a little Social Security branch office in a small farming community in central Illinois. Congress had recently passed the Supplemental Security Income program. As I’ve explained many times in this column, SSI is NOT a Social Security benefit and is not funded by Social Security taxes. It is a federal welfare program for low income elderly and disabled people that just happens to be managed by the Social Security Administration. So anyway, in the early 1970s, SSA employees were sent on a mission to help as many people as possible to apply for the benefits of the new program. But those “benefits” weren’t really all that impressive. At the time, the Supplemental Security Income program could supplement someone’s income up to $160 per month. In other words, if a person was getting a $120 monthly Social Security check and had no other income, he or she could get an additional $40 from the new SSI program. (Gosh, it may seem to some of my younger readers that I am writing about the Depression era. I even find it hard to believe that in my lifetime, people were living on $160 per month or even less!) Well, speaking of even less, one of the folks I came across in our efforts to find people potentially eligible for SSI benefits was an old man living all alone in a two room house on the outer fringes of our little town. I’ll call him Don. Don was about 70 years old. He was single and living on an $80 per month Social Security check. That was his only income in the world. His little house was paid for, and with the help of food stamps and some assistance from a local government agency with his utility bills, Don managed to get by on that small amount of monthly income. When he came into the office to see me, I explained that the new SSI program would double his monthly income. Instead of receiving just $80 per month from Social Security, he would get an additional $80 per month from SSI. His monthly income would go up to a whopping $160! But surprisingly, Don was reluctant to sign up. He explained that he was getting by just fine without the extra help. But what convinced him to apply for SSI was the added For morefor teasers log on tobenefits. bonus of automatic eligibility Medicaid www.TriviaGuy.com (Medicaid is the federal health insurance program

for poor people, as opposed to Medicare which is usually tied in with Social Security eligibility and is available to both rich and poor Americans.) So anyway, Don applied for the new program, and within a few weeks, his monthly SSI checks started to roll in. After he got his first check, I went to his home to visit him. He proudly showed me the used TV he bought with his first SSI check. He said he was sure glad I talked him into signing up for SSI benefits. The next check came in, and I learned that Don bought a microwave oven. Fast forward about two months -- and one day Don parked his bike next to the big picture windows that fronted our little Social Security branch office and walked in. I noticed his bike was festooned with a new basket and bell, and he even added some of those colorful “streamers” you see attached to the handlebar grips of kids’ bikes. (One of the ways Don got by on such a small amount of income was by walking or riding his bike most places he went. He hadn’t owned a car in years.) He came up to my desk looking a bit sheepish and said, “Tom, I want you to take me off this gosh darn SSI program.” When I asked why, he told me he just didn’t need all that money! I tried to point out that $160 per month really wasn’t all that much money. But to Don, it was. He said, “Tom, look at my bike. I bought that bell and those silly streamers because I had the extra cash. I look like a damn fool riding around town now.” And then he went on: “And that stupid TV. I used to sit around at night and read. Now I’m glued to that darn contraption, and I waste my time watching ‘Love Boat’ and ‘Laugh In’!” I pointed out to Don that the extra money was one thing, but that the potential benefits of the Medicaid program could be invaluable to him. He thought about it for a minute and finally said, “I just don’t want it. I’ve gotten along just fine for years now on my Social Security checks and Medicare. I simply don’t need SSI and Medicaid.” I had to do a bit of digging through our rule books because I had no idea how to take someone off of the SSI program. But I found the instructions, located the right form needed to withdraw his application, and helped Don fill it out. He signed it and walked out the door a satisfied man. As he got on his bike, I saw him pull the streamers off the handlebar grips and stuff them into his pocket. Later that evening, I stopped by Don’s place. I just

wanted to make sure that he really wanted to stop his SSI checks before I submitted his withdrawal form. But as I walked onto the porch of his modest little house, I could see through a window that the TV was gone. Don was sitting in a chair reading. I didn’t even bother knocking on the door to ask him about his decision. I knew he was happy!

On Aug. 4, 1914, as World War I erupts in Europe, President Woodrow Wilson formally proclaims the neutrality of the United States. However, by June 1915, the first 14,000 U.S. infantry troops landed in France to begin training for combat. On Aug. 2, 1934, Chancellor Adolf Hitler becomes absolute dictator of Germany under the title of Fuhrer, or “Leader.” The Fuhrer assured his people that the Third Reich would last for a thousand years, but Nazi Germany collapsed just 11 years later. On Aug. 1, 1943, a Japanese destroyer rams an American PT (patrol torpedo) boat, No. 109, slicing it in two. The destruction is so massive that other American PT boats in the area assume the crew is dead. Two crewmen were, in fact, killed, but 11 survived, including Lt. John F. Kennedy, who would later become president. On July 30, 1965, President Lyndon Johnson signs Medicare, a health insurance program for elderly Americans, into law. At the bill-signing ceremony, former President Harry Truman was enrolled as Medicare’s first beneficiary and received the first Medicare card. On July 31, 1975, Teamsters Union president Jimmy Hoffa is reported missing in Detroit. He was last seen alive in a parking lot outside the Machus Red Fox restaurant the previous afternoon. Authorities have never been able to confirm what really happened to Hoffa. He was declared legally dead in 1982. (c) 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

Victorian Mystery Q:
This is a photo of a three-piece porcelain set that belonged to my mother. The container stands about 7 inches tall, and the saucer is close to 6 inches in diameter. It is decorated with pink flowers, green leaves and gold trim. Marked on the bottom of the container and the saucer are the words “Hand Painted -- Nippon,” along with an “M” in the center of a wreath. The set is in mint condition. There is a small hole in the bottom of the container. I am mystified by the hole and wonder what its purpose is. Anything you can tell me about the origin, vintage and value of my set will be appreciated.
Porcelain canned milk container was made in Japan around 1900.
A:
Your container was used to hold a condensed milk can. In the late Victorian era, condensed milk was often used at breakfast. Because the cans were unsightly and offended the Victorian aesthetic sense, porcelain manufacturers included condensed milk containers in their table settings. The hole was designed so it was easy to remove the can by pushing a finger into it. Your set was made in Japan, and “Nippon” is the Japanese word for Japan. The letter “M” represents the Morimura Bros., who had offices in New York and imported porcelain to the United
This is the mark that is on a set of porcelain dinnerware that I inherited from my grandmother. The set is a ser vice for 12 and includes butter pats and all the ser vicing pieces. The dishes are white with scalloped edges and gold trim. There are no missing or broken pieces. I am not sure how old the set is or what it is worth. Since I plan to keep the set and pass it along to my daughter, I would appreciate learning more about it.

Your set was made by Haviland and Co. sometime between 1930 and 1941. Haviland and Co.

HARLEY FACTS (from page page 3) was introduced in 1949, with the first hydraulic front forks. This evolved into the Duo-Glide in 1958 with the addition of rear brakes and hydraulic rear suspension. The Electra-Glide came along with its electric starter motor in 1965, and on to the Super-Glide in 1971 and the Wide-Glide in 1980. • Harley has also had a variety of “heads” over the years. First there was the Flathead, dubbed as such because of the shape of the cylinder head cover. Introduced in 1929, it was a 45-cubicinch side-valve engine. The Knucklehead, the first V-Twin model, debuted in 1936 with its cylinder covers shaped like clenched fists. It featured two fuel tanks with the instrument panel positioned between them. It was produced until 1947. • Along came the Panhead in 1948 with aluminum cylinder covers resembling upsidedown saucepans. Panheads were around until 1965. The next year brought the Shovelhead, whose cylinder covers looked like the back of a shovel. Compare the Shovelhead’s engine size of 74 cubic inches with that 1903 model’s 25 cubic inches! The year 1984 brought in the Blockhead, an 80-cubic-inch engine. • A 1932 Harley-Davidson could have been purchased for around $300. If you’re looking to buy a 2013 Electra-Glide CVO Ultra-Classic 100th Anniversary Edition today, be ready to cough up about $38,000. A new Sportster will set you back around $11,000. • For seven days every August, Main Street in Sturgis, South Dakota, population 6,700, is packed with tens of thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts who gather to race and tour. The first rally was held in 1938, drawing nine racers and 200 spectators. The two-day rally offered $500 in prize money. Two years later, 150 racers participated in front of 5,000 onlookers. This year, close to 450,000 are expected for the annual rally.

Professional Golf Tips with Tina Mickelson Deep fairway rough When you find yourself in deep fairway rough, it is tempting to take a longer iron or fairway wood and try to hit it as far as humanly possible. But the smarter and safer approach is to just get it back into the fairway and set yourself up for your next shot. So the next time you are in deep fairway rough, here are a few things to consider:
Coffee Tastes Best with Tidbits!
• Make sure you use a club with enough loft. You don’t want to use anything more than an 8-iron. This ensure you can get the club face to the ball with enough loft to get it out of the rough. • Open the club face slightly when you set up to the ball. At impact the heel of the club tends to get caught up in the grass, causing the club face to shut down a bit, causing the ball to go left. By opening the club face at address you are allowing for this. • Set up with your weight slightly on your front leg, play the ball back in your stance, and open your stance just a bit. All of this promotes a steeper swing, helping the club face strike the ball first instead of getting caught up in the heavy grass. • Grip the club slightly firmer than usual to ensure the club doesn’t come loose in your hands at impact. Keep these factors in mind when you find yourself in deep fairway rough and you will get yourself out more easily and consistently. TINA MICHELSON, PGA
