“motor hotels,” that we know today as motels. America’s first drive-through restaurant, Red’s Giant Hamburg, opened along the road in Springfield, Missouri. The Cozy Dog Drive Inn, still in operation today in Springfield, Illinois, offered some of the route’s first fast food and the introduction of the corn dog. At the end of the road the first McDonald’s hamburger stand opened in 1945 in San Bernardino, offering 10¢ bar-b-que burgers and all-you-can-drink orange juice for a nickle. It’s now a museum and an official Route 66 Historic Site.

grace kelly (from page 2) • Rules applying the royalty of Monaco required the Kelly family to put up a dowry of $2 million U.S. dollars before the marriage could take place. The law also required there be both a civil and religious ceremony. The 40-minute civil ceremony was broadcast on April 18, 1956 from the Palace Throne Room of Monaco. That evening the couple attended the opera, where Grace was seen in a hand-embroidered silk gown embellished with 800,000 sequins and 1,500 pearls and rhinestones.

 It was Napoleon Bonaparte who made the following sage observation: “Glory is fleeting, but obscurity is forever.”  In 2006, an 87-year-old Oregon man, Marty Alvey, lost nearly all his sight, due (unsurprisingly) to age-related causes. This is not noteworthy. However, three years later, the same man became faint and dizzy, so he called 911. He began to feel better on the ambulance ride to the hospital, but he wanted to be checked out anyway. By the time the doctor made it to his room, Alvey’s sight had been restored. Even after thorough examinations by two ophthalmologists, no cause was found.

• The religious ceremony held the next day was attended by 600 guests and watched by an estimated 30 million eager television viewers. Grace’s dress, designed and sewn by MGM Studio’s costume masters, used 25 yards of silk taffeta, 100 yards of silk net, and 125-year-old lace that had been purchased from a museum. Thirty-six seamstresses worked for six weeks to complete the gown. The couple invited the entire 3,000 adult population of Monaco to the celebration that followed. The principality’s citizens gifted the newlyweds with a cream and black Rolls Royce convertible.

 If you’re pregnant in Switzerland, don’t tell anyone the name you plan to give your baby; it’s considered to bring bad luck.  Smugglers will never stop trying to find creative ways to transport illicit goods from one part of the world to another. In 2009, a German man tried to smuggle 44 lizards out of New Zealand in his underwear; it seems that he had sewn special pockets in his undergarments specifically for the creatures.

• Following their seven-week Mediterranean honeymoon cruise aboard the Prince’s yacht Deo Juvante II, the couple settled into their 15thcentury mansion, where they raised three children, Caroline, Albert, and The Prince and Princess of Monaco Stéphanie. arrive at the White House for a luncheon

 If a frog eats too many fireflies, it will begin to glow.  You’ve probably heard or seen pictures of bioluminescent lagoons, but the bacteria that cause this phenomenon are not limited to small bays and inlets. In fact, there is a bioluminescent patch of ocean to be found off the horn of Africa. “Patch” may not be quite the right word to describe it, though; the area that glows is the same size as the state of Connecticut.

• Grace was buried in the Grimaldi family vault on September 18, 1982, after a requiem mass in Saint Nicholas Cathedral, Monaco. Among the 400 in attendance, actor Cary Grant was among the attending members of the film community. • Years earlier, when asked how she would like to be remembered, she said, “I would like to be remembered as someone who accomplished useful deeds, and who was a kind and loving person. I would like to leave the memory of a human being with a correct attitude and who did her best to help others.” • The Princess Grace Foundation, Monaco, was founded in 1964 with the aim of helping those with special needs for whom no provision was made within the ordinary social services. In 1983 following Princess Grace’s death, Caroline, Princess of Hanover assumed the duties of President of the Board of Trustees of the Foundation. • Prince Rainier, who did not remarry, was buried alongside Grace following his death in 2005. 

dough by a cutter and were animal-shaped only. • Pick up a box of Barnum’s Animals today and inside you’ll find a bear, camel, crocodile, elephant, giraffe, gorilla, horse, lion, seal, tiger, and zebra, 22 crackers in all. The only four animals that have been around since the beginning are the bear, elephant, lion, and tiger.

ANIMAL CRACKERS It doesn’t matter what your age is, you’ve probably munched on animal crackers during your lifetime. What’s the history behind this well-known treat? Follow along and discover the facts. • Animal crackers were popular long before the familiar red circus wagon box. They were imported from England in the late 1800s, but as demand increased, U.S. factories began production. One of the original companies, Stauffer’s Biscuit Company, began in York, Pennsylvania, and is still in operation today with the same recipe. • The National Biscuit Company (later Nabisco) began manufacturing animal crackers in 1902, and labeled them “Barnum’s Animals” after circus showman P.T. Barnum. Boxes of crackers released during the holiday season that year were designed with a string attached to hang on a Christmas tree branch. The “wheels” on the box folded out from the bottom to make them appear more realistic. The price per box was five cents.

• In 1930, Paramount Pictures released Animal Crackers, a zany comedy starring the four Marx Brothers, Groucho, Chico, Harpo, and Zeppo. The plot revolved around a valuable painting going missing during a party honoring a famous African explorer Captain Geoffrey Spaulding, played by Groucho. The film featured one of Groucho’s most quoted lines, “One morning I shot an elephant in my pajamas. How he got in my pajamas, I don’t know.”

Can you tell me what Mar y McCormack has been doing since “In Plain Sight” ended? -- Paula S., via e-mail

A:

You can catch Mary now in the independent film “Escape from Polygamy,” which premieres Saturday, Aug. 24 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Lifetime. Beginning Oct. 3, Mary returns to series television in the new NBC single-camera comedy “Welcome to the Family,” which also stars Mike O’Malley Mary McCormack (“Glee”), Ella Rae Peck (“Deception”) and Ricardo Chavira (“Desperate Housewives”). “Family” gets a prime spot, airing after NBC comedy mainstay “Parks and Rec,” hopefully helping to fill the void that “The Office” has left in the network’s Thursday night comedy block. ***

When it’s too hot to even think of turning on the stove, why not give this ultra-easy lettuce salad with bacon-ranch dressing a try? We think you’ll be glad you did!

Yes and no. Tom will star in “Mission: Impossible 5,” which is scheduled for a 2015 release (most likely summer). Jeremy will be his co-star, but he was never brought on to replace Tom; he was added to the roster to partner with him. And as long as Tom keeps drinking from the Fountain of Youth, I say they should keep him on as long as they can. *** Write to Cindy at King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Sometimes it’s hard to see the writing on the wall. We’re too close to a situation to prioritize, make decisions and set boundaries. The following letters are from readers who stare at the writing on their wall and see only hieroglyphics. Sammo: “My girlfriend and I recently adopted Sammo, her parents’ 9-year-old Shar-Pei. He had become too much for them to handle and her father was ready to put Sammo down after he bit his wife -- twice. We decided to adopt him since we did not see signs of aggression toward people during our time with him. “At a recent checkup, Sammo snapped at the vet. Sammo has already snapped at me twice. Last night, we were on the back porch and he was enjoying a treat. It was getting dark and my girlfriend got up to get Sammo some water. He growled and charged at her. He has not had any real training outside of housebreaking and learning how to sit. What should we do?” The writing on the wall: Sammo had bitten twice before they adopted him, and they knew this. He’s an aggressive dog that requires professional training and firm boundaries. They will have to make concessions to keep Sammo safely in their lives and in their house. Rex: “Our 2-year-old Australian shepherd, Rex, has shown signs of aggression toward strangers and my daughter’s friends -- never toward family members. He won’t let anyone touch my daughter. If someone is on our yard, he will snarl and try to bite. Some mothers won’t let their girls come over anymore because Rex bit them. He has even broken skin. We tried to socialize him, but it didn’t get any better, so we want to do something about it.” The writing on the wall: Rex is a dangerous dog, and it is only a matter of time before someone is seriously injured. This family stands to lose a lot -- friendships, homeowners insurance, the home itself or even lives. Rex should be securely confined whenever anyone visits their home, and he must be kept away from small children. Maddy: “Some months back, my daughter rescued an abandoned dog. We have rescued animals in the past, but I was hesitant to take in a new animal because I’d just lost my job and money was -- and still is -- an issue. Nevertheless, I let “Maddy” stay. lifelong health Dr. David Lipschitz

One’s Vitality, Longevity Aren’t Kept in Pill Bottles Linus Pauling was a scientific genius but not in the health field. He developed a theory that if a small dose of a nutrient was good for you, massive doses must be better. He postulated that large doses of vitamin C had antiviral properties, prevented colds, bolstered the immune system and prolonged life. Thanks to him, many Americans are pickled with vitamin C. And of course, the same thought has extended to other vitamins and natural products, particularly those said to contain antioxidants. Cells produce highly toxic oxidants called free radicals. If not immediately neutralized, free radicals can damage cells to the point they undergo irreversible transformation that sets them on a path toward becoming malignant. With aging, a cell’s ability to neutralize free radicals becomes impaired, leading to a reduced ability to fight infection and a higher prevalence of heart disease and cancer. The belief is that taking antioxidants protects cells, keeping them healthy, disease-free and slow to age. The most recent buzz in this area is the belief that resveratrol, an antioxidant in red wine, prolongs life, reduces risk of heart disease and stroke and even delays the onset of Alzheimer’s. The resveratrol revolution started some years ago, when many research reports documented the health benefits of red wine that included a lower risk of heart attacks and strokes. Research in small animals showed that resveratrol prolonged life. Two glasses of red wine contain very small amounts of resveratrol. Because of the principle that more must be better, tablets containing massive amounts of resveratrol soon appeared on the market. At last, a longevity pill! Take this natural, side-effect-free supplement and live forever. A little may be good. More is not necessarily better. A study published in the prestigious Journal of Physiology examined the combined effects of exercise and resveratrol on health. Twenty-seven men, all 65, who were healthy but inactive, were all put on a vigorous exercise program that included strength training and aerobics. Half received 250 mg of resveratrol daily and the remainder a sugar pill (placebo). After eight weeks, those taking the sugar pill had a lower LDL (bad) cholesterol level and lower blood pressure. Resveratrol, on the other hand, eliminated the positive effect of exercise on cholesterol and blood pressure, along with the amount of oxygen delivered to muscles during exercise. This in turn impaired maximum exercise tolerance. Why should a large dose of an antioxidant have these negative effects? The research suggests that production of oxidants during exercise has health benefits and that neutralizing them with antioxidants can impair the appropriate response to exercise. Resveratrol is not the only antioxidant known to do the opposite of what is hoped. There is evidence that excessive doses of vitamins A, C and E, as well as beta-carotene, either have no effect or can increase risk of cancer, heart disease and Alzheimer’s. Moreover, they also impair exercise benefits. In America, over-nutrition and obesity are far more common than malnutrition and starvation. Nutritionists have developed a recommended daily allowance (RDA) of every nutrient. This is calculated by determining twice the amount in the diet

Tidbits of Coachella Valley

required to assure the absence of deficiency in 95 percent of individuals, based on age and sex. It is not surprising, therefore, that even healthy individuals who consume less than the recommended RDA will rarely have evidence of nutritional deficits. Based upon these facts, there is essentially no concrete evidence that taking a large dose of a nutritional supplement will improve health, longevity or risk of disease. This includes resveratrol or other vitamins that almost always have no benefit and may in fact harm. The bottom line -- as long as we are illnessfree and eating well, we should presume that our diets adequately nourish us. A healthy diet containing the best possible proteins, fats, carbohydrates and abundant vitamins and minerals promotes health and prevents disease. A glass or two of red wine does reduce heart attack risk and can prevent other diseases. If it is the resveratrol in the wine that is beneficial -- it may not be -- then wine is a far better choice than varying amounts of a chemically prepared supplement in pill form.

CASEY’S CORNER (from page 9) “In no time, I realized this little dog has some serious issues. She is afraid to be alone and is food aggressive. She is also afraid of any kind of noise. She will aggressively bark and snarl at me if I raise my voice in the slightest to discipline my three kids, and she goes ballistic if the kids start to argue. Maddy has bitten every member of the family at one point or another. “I’ve had a rotten time trying to find a new job, so I have been making strides to open an in-home day care. Yet, I am afraid that Maddy will freak out at the sound of a baby rattle and bite one of the children. After watching her random attack on my daughter today, I realize I am out of my league when it comes to attending to her psychological needs. Any advice?” The writing on the wall: A dog driven berserk by arguments and noise and that has already bitten at least three children is not a candidate for “day care dog.” Maddy is dangerous and can’t be around children. With Maddy running around a day care facility, this woman will lose her license and her shirt within a week -- not to mention the very real danger to other people’s children, as well as her own. When he got his W-2 form at the beginning of the following year, he learned that he actually made $19,000. Dear Doug  

Weary of the ‘keepingon’ routine Q:

My husband and I are in our late 70s and it seems like we have to work harder every day just to keep on “keeping on.” Life is more like a chore rather than letting us relax and just enjoy ourselves. Our “to do” routine includes shopping, doctors’ appointments, paying bills, maintaining our car and running endless errands. It's frustrating. What are we doing wrong?

A: As we age, we hope life will become

easier and more self-fulfilling, but it doesn't always work that way. We often find ourselves busier than ever, and question how we were once able to both work and handle family and home responsibilities at the same time. When we retire, we find it a challenge to adjust to our changing needs. To get rid of life’s “grungy” details we need to simplify and organize our time more efficiently. To begin, create a one-week journal of your activities. This checklist will allow you to analyze how you really spend your time. Step two is to eliminate the activities that have less importance in your life now. Amazingly, we often find we are wasting time which would be better spent on hobbies, socializing with our family and friends, traveling, educational classes and so on. Choosing to redefine, prioritize, simplify and change your routine should be helpful in making your time work for you, not against you! * * *

malls, coffee shops and during neighborhood walks. The best knack in making a new contact is to show respect and, if appropriate, compliment them in some way. There is always something “special” about that other person, and through casual conversation you often find you have a lot in common. Simply saying “hello” breaks down defenses and shows the other person you are friendly and approachable. You’ll find that it lifts your mood and actually makes you feel better about yourself. Keep yourself at ease and show an interest in people you meet. Ask questions and get them talking about their favorite subject -- themselves! Find out if they are locals or visitors. If they’re out-of-towners, ask where they’re from. The conversation will just flow naturally, and you will have made a new friend! Make it a practice to strike up a conversation with a stranger at least two or three times a week. Once you overcome your own shyness you’ll find it’s easy and it will become part of your personality. Watch how your friend does it and copy his style. After all, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery! * * * Doug Mayberry makes the most of life in a Southern California retirement community. Contact him at deardoug@ msn.com. Kettering’s inventions spread far beyond the automotive industry: He helped develop the refrigerant Freon, and took an active role in the medical industry, inventing a treatment for venereal disease, an incubator for premature infants and artificial fever therapy.  On Aug. 27, 1908, future president Lyndon Baines Johnson is born on a farm near Stonewall, Texas. As president, Johnson pushed through the creation of Medicare/ Medicaid, Head Start, the Voting Rights Act, the Civil Rights Act and the Department of Housing and Urban Development.  On Aug. 26, 1959, the British Motor Corporation launches its newest car, the small, affordable Mark I Mini. The Mini went on to become one of the best-selling British cars in history. Murakami was a teenage baseball prodigy in Japan, and his left-handed sidearm delivery proved an asset in the United States.

Q:

I have an acquaintance who seems to befriend ever yone he meets. He is quite outgoing, and when he flashes his friendly smile people are disarmed and instantly like him. As for myself, I was taught to be cautious before interacting with strangers and it takes way more time for me to get that friendly. Now in my 70s, when I hear my friend laughing and opening up conversations with people he’s just met, I envy him. Can someone my age change and be like that?

Inheritance Is Handy Q:

Enclosed is a photo of an item that my husband received along with several other things following a friend’s death. We are unable to identity what it is. It appears to be brass. It is 12 inches tall and has a 4-inch petal shaped base. There are three sets of small hands that can be moved up or down on the center. Each set is spring loaded so they can be squeezed to open the hands. I have examined the item and have been unable to find any identifying marks or names. It will be ver y much appreciated if you can tell us what this is.

Your set was made by Correct Table Service Company in Japan around 1950. The pattern, “Eternal Harvest” was made from the 1950s to around 1972. Many pieces can be found selling on the Internet. Your set would probably be worth $150 to $300. * * *

ROUTE 66 (from page page 3) 100 miles of Route 66 and all of the towns along that stretch of the road. • In 1956, President Eisenhower signed the Interstate Highway Act, calling for a modern four-lane highway system free of any crosstraffic intersections. Service stations and commercial businesses were also prohibited at the highway access sites. Within a few short years, as more freeways were added and small towns were bypassed, businesses quickly began to fail from the lack of vital customer traffic. In 1965, the Highway Beautification Act also placed restrictions on freeway road signs that urged travelers to exit the freeway in order to access Route 66. • In 1985 Route 66 was officially decommissioned and removed from the official U.S. Highway system and taken off road maps printed after that time. Today, the disjointed road prevents motorists from driving the original Route 66 for more than a few miles at a time. Parts of the original road are now the “business loop” in many cities, while other sections are now state and local roads, with some portions completely abandoned. Several stretches have been preserved, with a few having been placed on the National Register of Historic Places, marking an era of a time gone by. 

Bunker Drill

“l think you’d better just take the stroke and forget about looking for it.”

When hitting out of a bunker, a common tendency for many amateurs is to decelerate or stop the club completely after impact. The result usually leaves the ball still in the bunker. It is important to have a complete follow-through when hitting out of the sand, but for some players it can be difficult to incorporate that feel. As a drill, hit some bunker shots with only your left hand (for left-handed players, use your right hand). This will force you to take a longer swing, as well as exaggerate your follow-through. Don’t lock your elbow or wrist after impact. Allow the elbow to remain relaxed and the wrist to hinge after impact and during the follow-through. This drill will give you the proper feel for what it is like to accelerate through the ball. As an additional result, you should find that you are now utilizing the full bounce of the club and that the club head slides through the sand much more cleanly. Tina Mickelson PGA
