• Born Juanita Hudspeth in Texas in 1923, she married a soldier named Richard Musson in 1944, following him to his military station at the Presidio in San Francisco. Although they were later divorced, she remained in California for the rest of her life.
• Over the 30-year period she ended up running eleven different restaurants. She often lost them due to tax problems or health department violations, and more than one of them burned down. She always found a way to move on. • In 1960 she moved her eatery into an old abandoned gas station and bar in the town of El Verano. Patrons coming to dine were often startled to see Juanita bring their food order in one hand and her pet pig, Erica, or her monkey named Beauregard under her other arm. The animals often roamed free through the establishment, along with her pet fawn Sissy, a blind rooster, various ducks, cats, dogs and several goats.

was not breaking any laws. This was the first breakthrough into the world of restaurants. Boulanger hung a sign above his shop that read in French “Come to me all whose stomachs cry out and I shall restore you.” The French word for restore is “restaurabo,” which is where the word restaurant originated. FAST FACTS
• August is the busiest month of the year for America’s restaurants. A typical family of four will spend more than $200 in various eating establishments during August. • The United States now has over 250,000 restaurants, of which more than a third are franchises. The franchise chains account for more than 40% of all the income in the restaurant industry.
• A Visa Global ATM Network survey of international travelers revealed that the best restaurants in the world are in Paris, France. Second place was awarded to Rome, and third place went to Hong Kong. YOU BE THE JUDGE
• When a New York food critic wrote his column reviewing a local restaurant, he used numerous unflattering phrases including “a ghastly concoction,” “a pretentious failure,” “green plague” and “yellow death.” The restaurant owner was furious and sued the newspaper for several million in damages claiming that the reviewer had ruined his reputation and caused him great humiliation. If you were the judge, how would you rule? (Answer at the end of the story, page 15.)

Michelle told the TCA panel: “As much as I think it was sad to see Dan (Stevens, who played Matthew) go, it opens up an opportunity for Julian (Fellowes, “Downton Abbey’s creator and head writer) to take the character in all new directions. The fourth (season) is about recovery. She’s starting a new life. There are various suitors who are being thrown in her direction. But she’s very reluctant

Chalk that rumor up to good acting -just because their characters didn’t get along doesn’t mean the actresses behind the characters don’t. In fact, Kate offered up her Los Angeles home to Lea so she could hide out for a few weeks after the death of her beau, Cory Monteith. In other “Glee” news, NeNe Leakes is set to return for multiple episodes this season as Coach Roz. This makes me happy, because even though I love Coach Sylvester, there is always room for the hilarious Roz. ***
Q:
I loved Showtime’s series “The Borgias” and was so bummed when it was canceled without a resolution. Any chance it’ll come back as a movie or something to wrap things up? -- Jerry T., Montgomery, Ala.
A:
The Jeremy Irons-starring period drama, which ended its third season this past June, has gotten a wrap-up -- in e-book form. Mid-August saw the release of “The Borgia Apocalypse,” a book based on the intended two-hour series finale that never came to fruition.

Will Stay-at-Home Mom Be Eligible for Social Security? Everyday CHEAPSKATE
Dear Mary: I’m a stay-at-home mom and haven’t had a paycheck since®I was a teenager. Will I be eligible for Social Security benefits? -- Emily, Oregon by Mary Hunt Dear Emily: If you are married, you will be eligible. Your Social Security retirement benefits are tied to your husband’s. You can file when he does, provided you’re at least 62 at that time. Your monthly check will be equal to 50 percent of his, if he waits until “full retirement age” to begin collecting benefits (65, 66 or 67 depending on the year he was born). If he opts to begin drawing early at 62, then your benefit will be reduced to 37.5 percent of his monthly check. (If you’re now single, divorced or widowed, the amounts vary.) We’re not talking a lot of money here under the very best of circumstances, so plan on it as a supplement, not enough to live on. To get help, go to the Social Security Administration website, SSA.gov, and check out the FAQs. This site is remarkably user-friendly. * * * Dear Mary: If my parents die with a lot of debt, will I be responsible for paying it? -- Jeb, email Dear Jeb: You will not be responsible for their debts, unless you cosigned for a loan with them or you are a joint account holder on their credit card accounts. Your parents’ debts will be paid out of their estate (everything they own, including real estate). Anyone they owe has to get in line to be

paid, with secured creditors like their mortgage lender in first position. Then come their unsecured creditors, like credit card companies. Once all their debts are paid from their assets, anything that remains is divided up amongst their heirs. If your parents die with few to no assets, their creditors eat the loss. They cannot come after you. * * * Dear Mary: I’m recently divorced. My husband handled the finances; now I’m on my own. Where do I start? -- Betty, email Dear Betty: You need a budget. This just means “pre-spending” your money on paper first, before you deposit your check. Make two lists: Income and Expenses. Under Income, list the sources (paycheck, child support, alimony, savings, settlements, etc.) and the amounts. Under Expenses, list all of your bills and obligations, starting with your rent or mortgage payment, food, car payment, utilities, clothes, etc. Add up each list, then subtract your expenses from your income. If your expenses are more than your income, start crossing out things that are optional. Carefully weigh the expenses you believe are essential. Cable TV isn’t essential. Food is vital, of course, but try shopping at discount markets, rather than going out to restaurants. You need a car, but not a gas-guzzler with big payments. Once your expenses and income are in line with each other, use your budget as your monthly financial road map. Consult it often and you’ll find yourself in control of your money, instead of the other way around. To get help, type “budget worksheet” into an Internet search engine, and you’ll find many free forms and Excel spreadsheets to develop a spending plan. * * *

VA Gives Ground on Agent Orange The Department of Veterans Affairs pays benefits for a number of illnesses caused by Agent Orange, including chronic B-cell leukemias, Hodgkin’s disease and Parkinson’s disease. For the most part, however, unless you were boots on the ground and wallowing in the stuff in Vietnam, proving exposure has been tough. At CFB Gagetown, the VA only acknowledges a four-day window of possible exposure. Blue Water sailors have had to prove that they actually stepped foot on land or were on ships that operated in the waterways of Vietnam. Those who came in contact with the C-123K spray planes post-Vietnam were told they were unlikely to be at risk because the Agent Orange would have dried. Officials didn’t think it through. In the years before the planes were decommissioned (around 2010), they were used as medical and cargo carriers. They were still contaminated. Those affected could include National Guard, flight nurses, ground crews and flight crews. Methods of transmission would have been skin, breathing or eating. Consider: A wet wipe-down of the plane can activate the toxin. Now, for the first time, the VA has acknowledged (in the form of disability compensation to one veteran) that those who flew in the planes that dropped the Agent Orange also could be affected. If you flew on or worked on a C-123K between 1972 and 1982, and if you’re sick from Agent Orange exposure and fighting for compensation, write this down: Retired Air Force Lt. Col. Paul Bailey had his denied claim overturned and he will receive compensation “as the result of occupational hazards onboard C-123K aircrafts.” He flew on the C-123K after the Vietnam War. Bailey is ill with multiple cancers. When his plane, sent to a museum, was tested in 1994, it was discovered to still be “heavily contaminated” with Agent Orange. Freddy Groves regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible. Send email to columnreply2@gmail.com.

If only every dog-in-a-hot-car story ended like this one. Last week, former Dallas Cowboys coach Barry Switzer became a hero all over again. But this time, it’s animal lovers and not football fans who are cheering. On his way into a store in Norman, Okla., Switzer spotted a Rottweiler puppy sitting alone in a hot car. Windows cracked. Sun blazing. Dog panting. Switzer waited. The football coach and animal lover waited until the dog’s owners returned to their car, and then he made them an offer they couldn’t refuse. He bought the pup on the spot and took her straight to the vet, where little Stella, as Switzer named her, was treated to a complete medical checkup, as well as a spa session. Stella moved in with Switzer and his German shepherd, Sieger, but only temporarily. Switzer has already selected Stella’s new family -- an Oklahoma couple whose home was destroyed in the Moore tornado last year. Switzer said, “I want some loving family who loves dogs and cares about dogs like I do to be able to have her.” A lot of people think it’s OK to leave a dog in a car while they run an errand. It’s not. Officer Robert Miller of the Bennettsville, S.C., police department received an unpaid 60-day suspension, 90 days of probation and permanent exclusion from the K-9 officer program after leaving his K-9 partner, Tank, in his police car with the engine off and the windows up last week. The 4-yearold Labrador retriever died of heat stroke. In Woodbridge, Conn., 24-year-old Tiffany July-Lindo faces criminal charges of animal cruelty for leaving her 14-month-old Yorkie-Chihuahua mix in the car last week. When she returned to her car an hour later, her dog was dead. In Spartanburg, S.C., also last week, police broke the window of a car in a mall parking lot in an effort to rescue a bulldog who clearly was suffering heat distress. When officers reached the dog, his tongue was purple, he began to vomit and he was too weak to drink the water they tried to give him. The bulldog died at the emergency clinic where he was taken for treatment. CASEY’S CORNER: Turn to page 13

Shingles Rash Gone, Pain Lingers On DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Two months ago, I broke out in a shingles rash. I had some pain, but not a whole lot. After the rash left, the pain increased, and it’s still there to this day. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions you might make. I need some relief from this pain. I didn’t think shingles lasted this long. Would the shingles vaccine help? -- R.M. ANSWER: Shingles doesn’t last that long. What you have now is postherpetic neuralgia, nerve damage caused by the shingles virus. That’s the source of your pain. The entire story is complicated. When you were a kid, you had chickenpox. Even if you don’t remember, even if there’s no record of it, the chickenpox virus infected your body. It remains in a deep sleep inside nerve cells until later in life, when something wakens it and the virus makes its way down the nerve to the skin. There it produces the typical rash and pain of shingles. The rash is gone in about two weeks. Between 10 percent and 15 percent of those who have shingles will face one of its dreadful complications: postherpetic neuralgia, pain that lingers long after the rash is gone. Pain relievers and time are the only things that treat this shingles aftermath. Sometimes antidepressants given in low doses can ease the pain. Amitriptyline is an example of such a drug. Seizure-control medicines are another group of drugs that can control postherpetic neuralgia. Lyrica and Neurontin are two such drugs. Capsaicin cream, available without a prescription, applied to the area of pain, might soothe it. Qutenza is a patch impregnated with a high concentration of capsaicin. It’s the latest treatment of the aftermath pain of shingles. A health-care professional has to apply the patch to the skin. It’s left in place for an hour and then removed. It is expensive; make sure your insurance covers it. Often, doctors have to resort to a combination of treatments to control postherpetic neuralgia. The shingles vaccine won’t help you now. If given before an outbreak, it prevents shingles in 50 percent of recipients and has a 66 percent record of heading off postherpetic neuralgia. Shingles is a torment to many older people. The booklet on shingles explains it and its treatment

in detail. To order a copy, write: Dr. Donohue -- No. 1201W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I suffer from premature auricular contractions. I have seen a couple of doctors about it, but none seems to consider them worth discussing. I was told I didn’t need to do anything. I wasn’t given any medicines. Does this deser ve more attention? -- L.C. ANSWER: Premature auricular contractions are also called premature atrial contractions. The atria are the upper two heart chambers. These are extra beats sandwiched between two normal beats. If they aren’t numerous and if they are not causing any symptoms, they can be safely ignored. They are not an indication of serious heart problems, and they don’t indicate future troubles. Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. (c) 2013 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

SENIOR NEWS LINE by Matilda Charles © King Features Synd., Inc.
Meeting Our Own Expectations When we were young adults, we no doubt thought that we’d be less happy as we got older, that we were at our peak. Once we reached age 50 and weren’t especially pleased because we hadn’t met all of our goals, we likely thought it was all downhill from there. A study of people between the ages of 17 and 85 shows that at two particular points in our lives, we are wrong in our guesses about how our lives will progress and how happy we will be. When we were young, at age 23 (the first point in life where we were wrong), we expected great futures even though the reality wasn’t necessarily wonderful at the time. We faced tough circumstances with student loans, home costs, financial pressures and raising young families, but we thought we could handle it and would accomplish much. By the time 50 came along, many of those goals had been sadly abandoned as the realities sank in. Unmet expectations and disappointments colored our lives. We could see the writing on the wall, we thought, in terms of future retirement, declining health and eventual low income. We didn’t see anything good down the road. Wrong again. As seniors, it turns out, we’re happier than we thought we’d be. How does this work? Expectations. Through our lives, our expectations are different from our actual well-being, and the two don’t merge until much later. We’re victims of our own age discrimination, not expecting to be happy based on our own predictions. It takes until around age 69 to figure out the benefits of getting older, and we no longer care about the goals that once consumed us. The key, researchers say, is letting go of regret. I wouldn’t want to be 23 again. Would you? Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into her column whenever possible. Talking Machine Cranks Up Sound Q:
While visiting our friend in New England, we obser ved a crank operated record player in the corner of her dining room. Attached is a picture of it. Our friend, a widow, said it had belonged to her husband and she did not know anything about it. It is in pristine condition and sounds great. It still has a complete set of records, both large and small. Could you please tell us about it and what its approximate value is?

Q:
I have an antique silver plated foot ed butter dish that has been in my family for generations. I plan to pass it along to my daughter and she would like to know more about its histor y and value. I have enclosed the mark that is on the bottom of the dish. The overall height with the ornate handle is about 12 inches, and there is a hook on the side for the butter knife, which we still have. There is a glass insert, and the lid revolves to open. It is decorated with engraved flowers and leaves and the silver plate is in perfect condition. Also, we are thinking of insuring it. Any information you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

RESTAURANTS (from page page 3) Cleveland to Washington, DC. Her secretary called ahead to a Howard Johnson’s restaurant to make reservations for Mrs. Johnson and her entourage. After they had eaten and left, a reporter interviewed the waitress. “How did it feel to serve Mrs. Johnson?” “I was pretty nervous,” replied the waitress. “Have you ever met a first lady before?” inquired the reporter. “First Lady?” cried the waitress. “That was Mrs. Lyndon Johnson? I thought it was Mrs. Howard Johnson!” • Musician Gerald Berners was listening to a high-toned woman of his acquaintance as she complained about a local restaurant. She was upset because the head waiter had refused to seat her and her husband immediately. “Why,” she exclaimed, “We had to tell him who we were!” Gerald inquired politely, “Really? And who were you?”

• Dining with friends at a fancy restaurant, Dorothy Parker rose and excused herself saying, “Excuse me, I have to go to the bathroom.” She paused a moment, then added, “I really have to use the telephone, but I’m too embarrassed to say so.” YOU BE THE JUDGE
• In the legal case of the humiliated restauranteur, the courts agreed that the columnist’s review was “degrading, malicious, and unprovoked,” but that it still merely expressed the writer’s personal opinion, which was protected by the Constitution.
