As the population grew and more people shared the same name, it became necessary to add more information about which John or which Mary was being referred to. That’s when the use of surnames began. Sur comes from the Latin super and means ‘above and beyond.’ Follow along as we learn a few more things about the history of names!

● It was beloved American novelist Pearl S. Buck who made the following sage observation: “Nothing is less reliable than a machine. It is difficult not to wonder whether that combination of elements which produces a machine for labor does not create also a soul of sorts, a dull resentful metallic will, which can rebel at times.” ● You might be surprised to learn that Spanish moss is not actually a moss; it’s a cousin of the pineapple. ● The last country in the world to get telephones was the South Asian nation of Bhutan, and both television and the Internet were banned there until 1999. Incidentally, Bhutan also is the only nation in the world in which the well-being of the citizens is so important that the government measures the country’s Gross National Happiness. ● Those who study such things say that whale songs rhyme. ● This is probably the time of year when you’re most likely to see examples of didaskaleinophobia in action -- that’s a fear of going to school. ● If you’re like 98 percent of Americans, you think you’re a better driver than everyone else on the road. ● The next time you make a family trip to Yellowstone National Park, keep in mind that as you walk through the seemingly peaceful scenery and view the iconic geysers, you’re actually walking on top of a supervolcano. Just 5 miles beneath the surface is a giant magma chamber, 37 miles long and 25 miles wide. ● It’s traditional in Germany to shatter lots of dishes before a couple gets married. The couple, of course, has to work together to clean up the mess. *** Thought for the Day: “You can fool all of the people some of the time, and some of the people all of the time; but you cannot fool all of the people all of the time.” -- Abraham Lincoln

Another method is to deduct the amount charged from the checking account register to make sure that money will be available at the end of the month. FIRST NAMES
• Studies have shown that people with odd or unusual names are more prone to psychosis and criminal behavior. Kids with common names (such as Michael or Jennifer) tend to be more popular and do better in school than those with undesirable names or names that are hard to spell or pronounce. • In another study, school teachers were given essays to grade and were told they were written by students. Popular and unpopular names were randomly assigned as being the authors of the essays. The essays that were supposedly written by David, Mike, Lisa, and Karen received higher grades than identical essays “written” by Elmer, Hubert, or Bertha. • History’s most popular and enduring names have been Mary, meaning ‘star of the sea,’ and John, meaning ‘gift of God.’ • In England, the hundred most common boys’ names account for 94% of all boys’ names; and the most popular 100 girls’ names make up for 83% of the total. In some countries such as the West Indies and parts of Africa, people emphasize giving a child a name that no one has ever had before. • The birth records of Pennsylvania showed that 160,000 children born in a recent year were given 12,774 different names. • In the 1600s Puritans liked to pick inspirational names like Faint-Not, Stand-Fast, and Lord-IsNigh. Some popular names with these Puritan roots are Faith, Hope, Charity, Joy, Patience, and Prudence. • David Carradine and his wife Barbara Hershey named their son Free. Free later changed his name to Tom. • There are about 2 million Toms worldwide.

Q: Can you tell me what to look for-
ward to in the next season of “The Mindy Project”? Will she still be with Casey? -- Deanna W., via e-mail
A:
Q:
So far, my favorite new show of 2013 is “Devious Maids.” Can you give me any clues as to what to expect for the rest of the season, especially for my favorite character, Evelyn Powell? -- Kimberly T., St. Louis
A: You’re
not alone, Kimberly. The Lifetime network show is breaking records and taking names; since its debut in June, each week has seen a steady increase in viewers, myself being one of them. And I also can’t get enough of Evelyn Powell, and especially her scenes Rebecca Wisocky with husband Adrian. That’s due in no small fact to the fabulous writing and the breathtaking acting by Rebecca Wisocky and Thomas Irwin. I spoke with Rebecca recently about all things “Maids” (and a little about her stint on another fave of mine, “True Blood”), and she had lots to say. About what to expect for the season finale: “A lot of things come to a head between her and Adrian. I will say that the season opens with a great big chaotic, glamorous party at the Powell house, of which there are many. And the season also closes with a big, large, gorgeous, chaotic party at the Powell house. And equally dramatic things transpire. “There are a lot of things going on; by the end of the season, the question, ‘Who killed Flora?’ will be answered. But 10 more questions will rear their heads in its place. And pretty significant questions, actually. There are a lot of things in the balance.” As for Evelyn’s future in season two, Rebecca is content to leave everything in Marc Cherry’s very capable hands: “I’m sure Marc probably has a lot of ideas. I imagine that I’ll hear some of them soon. And from my perspective, whatever he writes for me is going to be gold. I think he has a love for this character, and I’m very grateful for that. Whatever direction he decides to go, I’m on board.” ***
Well, it looks as if Mindy and Casey might be kaput after returning from their yearlong goodwill trip to Haiti. “Justified” star Timothy Olyphant has signed on to guest star as a love interest of Mindy. Viewers will note that this isn’t Timothy’s first foray into sitcoms -- he guest-starred on two episodes of “The Office” back in 2010. ***
Q:
You mentioned a while back that “Eastbound and Down” had been resurrected for a fourth season. Can you tell me when it will premiere? -- Donnie R., via e-mail
A:
Danny McBride and his glorious mullet will be back for eight new raucous episodes beginning Sunday, Sept. 29, for its “epic final season” on HBO. Lindsay Lohan is set to make a cameo (as who, I won’t say, so as not to spoil it for you). *** Is it true that Courteney Cox is dating her on-screen love, Josh Hopkins, in real life? -- Janie P., via e-mail
Q: A:
The 49-year-old star of “Cougar Town” -- which has been renewed by TBS for a fifth season -- IS dating one of her co-stars; however, it isn’t Josh. Courteney and Brian Van Holt (who plays her ex-husband, Bobby) are the real-life couple. In fact, they recently vacationed with Courteney’s daughter (with ex-husband David Arquette), Coco, in Cancun, Mexico. They had to cut their vacation short when Courteney fell and broke her wrist, leading them all to head back to the States so she could be treated by her own physician. *** Write to Cindy at King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Impossible Zucchini-Tomato Cheese Pie It’s that time of the year when our gardens are overflowing with produce. Well, we’ve taken advantage of that fact and added a new twist by simply giving this bountiful dish an Italian accent. See if your loved ones aren’t singing “That’s Amore” after their feast! 1 1/2 cups chopped unpeeled zucchini 1/2 cup chopped onion 1 cup chopped fresh tomato 1/4 cup grated fat-free Parmesan cheese 1/3 cup shredded reduced-fat Cheddar cheese 1 1/2 cups (one 12 fluid-ounce can) evaporated skim milk 3/4 cup reduced-fat biscuit baking mix 1/4 teaspoon black pepper 1 teaspoon dried parsley flakes 1. Preheat oven to 400 F. Spray a 10-inch-deep dish pie plate or quiche dish with butter-flavored cooking spray. Evenly layer zucchini, onion and tomato into prepared pie plate. Sprinkle Parmesan and Cheddar cheeses evenly over vegetables. 2. In a medium bowl, combine evaporated skim milk, biscuit baking mix, black pepper and parsley flakes. Mix well using a wire whisk. Pour mixture evenly over top. Bake for 30 minutes or until a knife inserted in center comes out clean. Place pie plate on a wire rack and let set for 5 minutes. Serves 6. Everyday CHEAPSKATE

Fly for Free? Maybe DEAR MARY: My husband and I own a small business, and we are looking for a credit card that offers reward air miles. Our plan is to pay it off each month but collect miles for travel to buy goods for our business. One of our sales ® reps told us that many small businesses pay for goods at gift shows with their credit card and use those miles to pay for trips to the next trade by Mary Hunt show. Do you know of a site where we can find a credit card for this purpose? Thank you so much. Your column is filled with wisdom and inspiration, and I really enjoy it. --Toni C., Wash.
Everyday CHEAPSKATE
DEAR TONI: Your plan is a good one, provided you really do pay the balance in full each month and your credit card has a 25-day grace period in which to do that. That way the miles you earn will truly be free. But if you should happen to lapse and let the balance roll to the next month, not only will you lose your grace period until the balance is paid in full once again, but you will also pay so much interest any miles you earn will pale by comparison. It takes effort and finesse to not get caught in the debt trap. If you decide to move forward with this, my advice is to stick with a personal credit card, not one that is designated for business. You want all of the legal protection afforded to personal credit cards by the Fair Credit Billing Act. To find a reward credit card, go to IndexCreditCards.com. Index Credit Cards offers a comprehensive list of current credit card offers. More than likely, you will have to pay an annual fee for the card, something you will want to weigh carefully against its

potential benefits. * * * DEAR MARY: I have a new 100 percent New Zealand wool rug that has an unpleasant odor about it. How can I get rid of the smell? --Denise W., email DEAR DENISE: You need to call the manufacturer (find the name on a tag and hopefully a phone number, too). In the meantime, your rug may simply be going through a process known as “de-gassing,” as the chemicals used during the manufacture process are dissipating. If this is the case, the smell will go away by itself within a few weeks. You can hasten this process by putting the rug out in the direct sun (I would turn it right-side down to prevent any fading), being careful to not let it get damp and to bring it in at sundown. * * * DEAR MARY: I love picking up the small, boxed mixes by Jiffy because they are often so cheap. The trouble is, I don’t always know what to do with them. Do you have any recipes that include these mixes? --Ruby G., Calif.

People who have little dogs tend to agonize like Hamlet over the question of: To housebreak, or to paper train? Those with big dogs don’t think twice about it. Owners of Great Danes and Newfoundlands unanimously agree that they don’t want their dogs doing their business in the house. Which is exactly what paper training is: teaching your dog to do his business in the house. The truth about paper training is that you really can’t do it. Not successfully. Not consistently. It isn’t natural. In fact, it goes against a dog’s very nature. Dogs are territorial. When walking your dog, I’m sure you’ve noticed that his sniffer kicks into overdrive. That’s what dogs do: They go outside, they sniff around, they lift their leg and they mark their territory. Usually, they mark more than one spot. Left to their own devices, they’d mark many more spots than the average dog owner will tolerate on a single excursion. Paper training your dog means expecting him to go on the same spot every day, day after day, month and month, year after year, without fail. It means asking him to forgo a very basic instinct. This is why housebreaking is the better choice for big dogs and small dogs. Housebreaking is teaching your dog to do his business outside and only outside. It allows your dog to be a dog, and it allows your house to remain clean, sanitary and free of unpleasant surprises. I talked to a man with a 7-year-old Yorkie the other day. From Day One, his dog was paper trained. And those piddle pads worked for four years, when suddenly and without warning, everything changed. This man and his wife spent the next three and a half years soaking up puddles and picking up poop. Now, their house stinks, their carpets are a mess, and they called me right after the straw broke the camel’s back. Yes. He stepped in it. When you have a little dog, it’s easy to get lazy. And paper training is the lazy man’s solution to the age-old question of what to do when your dog has to go. Plop some newspaper on the kitchen floor and call it yellow journalism. This little dog problem -- what I call toy dog syndrome -- affects many people. Its symptoms involve the following thought process: little dog, little urine, little poop, little trouble. And so the decision is CASEY’S CORNER: Turn to page 10

lifelong health Dr. David Lipschitz
Forgiveness, Relaxation Provide Health Benefits Who has not been through periods when nothing goes right? Conflicts at work, conflicts with family, disappointments or actions toward you that are devastatingly hurtful. The world seems dark, the sky black, the silver lining almost invisible and the future bleak. Not surprisingly, these frequent life stressors can lead to unhappiness, anxiety, stress, hopelessness and an inability to cope. Anger is pervasive, destructive, overwhelming and, on occasion, may lead to regrettable actions that can cause irrevocable physical and emotional damage. An example of a national wound is the devastating and destructive events of Sept. 11, 2001, that led to the deaths of 2,753 innocent people. The outpouring of rage, accompanied by vulnerability and loss of innocence, led to a commitment to bring the guilty to justice and to seek revenge for those so brutally injured by evil terrorists. Now 12 years later, we have made great strides in bringing those criminals to justice, and terrorist groups are on the defensive, but the cost has been high with much collateral damage as innocent bystanders at home and abroad have been injured and killed. And the war is far from over. We are threatened by the almost certainty of further attacks and must remain vigilant against any potential threat. Whether the wound or insult is individual or national, the accompanying seething anger, the continual grudge and the desire for revenge are harmful, destructive and a major cause of ill health. If allowed to fester, anger and stress can lead to chronic diseases, such as high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke, a greater risk of turning to unhealthy habits, such as cigarette smoking or alcohol abuse or being prone to fits of anger and, sadly, even violence. Consider that the diagnosis and treatment of depression have soared in recent years. Approximately 10 percent of Americans and 25 percent of women between 40 and 60 are being treated with an antidepressant. The solution is clear to many experts: We must truly forgive if we are ever to move forward. Learn to let go, do not bear a grudge, do not promise to get even, do not let anger consume you, and work toward genuine forgiveness of those who have harmed you. And if you have done something to hurt or harm another, consider honestly and selflessly asking for forgiveness and then let go and attempt closure. Forgiveness is not simple and takes continuous effort; emotional injuries take years to heal, and even if a relationship seems on the right track, the harm is always there, festering just beneath the surface. Forgiveness takes time and requires
Tidbits of Coachella Valley
hard work. True forgiveness does not mean that you have forgotten, but it rather provides a path to freedom and peace that gradually heals and evolves, leading to greater trust, an acceptance that redemption is indeed possible and that life can move forward. A critical tool in dealing with anger and stress is learning to seek peace. Relaxation exercises can help reduce stress levels and assist in dealing with resentment, anger and emotional suffering. Relaxation is not as simple as saying “I have to relax” or “I need a cigarette or a glass of wine to help me.” It requires technique and there’s a learning curve. Relaxation can either be taught by an expert or developed by listening to a relaxation tape or, these days, to a meditation app on a smartphone. Most of these apps are free and provide stress-reduction exercises varying from five to 20 minutes. Most relaxation techniques involve meditation, breathing exercises and imagery that creates calmness and peacefulness. A typical app will guide you to “breathe in” relaxation and “breathe out” tension, to concentrate on measured breathing and to visualize objects and places that make you feel happier and calmer. Whether one is truly committing to forgiveness or actively participating in stress-reduction techniques, the health benefits of relaxation exercises rapidly become obvious. Heart rate decreases, blood pressure improves and beneficial hormonal changes occur that indicate improved well-being. The message is clear. Forgiveness and seeking peace are essential for better, longer and more productive lives. CASEY’S CORNER (from page 9) made to paper train the little guy. After three and a half years of narrow escapes and smelly messes, this couple still argued, “But it’s such a small amount!” Housebreaking is thought to be the harder road to climb. But if that’s true at all, it’s only in the short term. Here are a couple of tips to get you off on the right foot: -- Start young. Older dogs can be housebroken, but it’s much easier to instill good habits than to break bad ones. -- Begin training in the spring or summer. Cold, harsh weather makes it harder for humans to stay the course with the training program. And housebreaking means taking your dog outside to eliminate several times a day. Once you understand the housebreaking process and what it involves, it’s really just a matter of consistency on your part. Feed, water, walk. Feed, water, walk. That consistency coupled with an ageappropriate diet for your dog is the key to successful housebreaking. For detailed information on housebreaking your dog, check out “When Good Dogs Do Bad Things” in your local library, or visit unclematty. com. Woof! The Social Security Administration recently redesigned its website: www.socialsecurity.gov. I think the new version is cleaner and more professional looking. The most popular services are now very easy to find. But I think some of the most fascinating parts of the website are not the services provided, but rather the wealth of news, information and statistics that are offered. The idea of Go Figure! is to arrive at the figures given at the bottom and right-hand columns of the diagram by following the arithmetic signs in the order they are given (that is, from left to right and top to bottom). Use only the numbers below the diagram to complete its blank squares and use each of the nine numbers only once.

● On Sept. 20, 1960, California hot rodder Mickey Thompson takes another shot at the world land-speed record. Although he only managed to coax his streamlined Challenger up to about 378 mph on his first run and 368 mph on the second, his speedy trips across the Bonneville Salt Flats won worldwide fame for the car and its driver. ● On Sept. 18, 1974, actress Doris Day, one of the biggest box office draws of the 1950s and ‘60s, wins a $22.8 million malpractice suit against her former lawyer. After the death of her third husband, Martin Melcher, in 1968, she discovered that her $20 million in life savings had disappeared. ● On Sept. 17, 1983, 20-year-old Vanessa Williams becomes the first black to win the Miss America crown. Williams later launched a successful singing and acting career, including a featured role on the hit television sitcom “Ugly Betty.” (c) 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

Berry Dishes Go With the Flow Q:
My mother-in-law gave me four small matching flow blue dishes. I have enclosed a photo of one of the dishes. She had a complete set of flow blue dinnerware and gave most of the pieces to her daughters and daughters-in-law several years ago. The set has been in my husband’s family for several generations. My mother-in-law’s mother brought the dishes with her when she emigrated to the United States. Marked in cobalt blue on the bottom of each dish is the word “Scinde” in a cartouche. Also the words “J. and G. Alcock” and “Oriental Stone” are impressed on the bottom of each dish. The pattern is an Asian scene of water, trees, a figure, a building and flowers. The rim is decorated with stylized flowers and leaves. Each dish is 5 inches in diameter and in excellent condition. This set is a treasured family heirloom and will be passed down to the next generation. Anything you can tell me about its histor y will be greatly appreciated.
A:
You have a set of semi-porcelain indi vidual berry dishes that were probably part of a set that included a master berry bowl. John and George Alcock established their pottery in Cobridge, Staffordshire, England, around 1820. Flow blue was inspired by Chinese blue and white porcelain that was exported to England in the early 1600s. Most of the Staffordshire potteries decorated their ware with transfer prints. The cobalt blue would flow or bleed during firing having a two-fold effect. The blurry blue designs were attractive to the buyer, and they camouflaged the flaws in the design. “Scinde” is the name of the pattern and is a province in India. Your berry dishes were made around 1840 and would probably fetch $50 to $100 each in an antiques shop.
John and George Alcock Pottery were located in Staffordshire, England.
Q:
This is the mark that is on a set of dinnerware that was my grandmother’s. The set is a ser vice for eight, and each piece is hand painted in a yellow and brown plaid design. What can you tell me about the maker, vintage and value?
A:
Vernon Kilns located in Vernon, Calif., made your dinnerware. They were in business from 1931 to 1958. “Organdie” is the name of the pattern and was made in the 1940s and 1950s.
Vernon Kilns were in business in California, from 1931 to 1958.
