After the situation was explained to him, he agreed to the loan and accompanied the poker players back to the game. He returned within a few minutes with the amount of the loan, along with an additional $500 in interest. “If you were a poker player,” he told the other banker, “you’d know good collateral when you see it.”

Abraham Lincoln signed the proclamation and Thanksgiving Day as we know it was born.
Tidbits Nibbles on a few...
Thanksgiving Factoids
• In 1621 at the first Thanksgiving where the Pilgrims and Indians ate together, they no doubt ate birds, but there is no proof that they ate turkey. They had no bread, since they had long depleted their store of flour. Although they probably ate stewed pumpkin, without flour they could not have had pumpkin pie. Instead, they ate venison, corn cakes, berries, plums, watercress, and cranberries. The next year brought more immigrants to shelter and feed, and a poor harvest made life hard. They never again celebrated Thanksgiving. • In 1777, all 13 colonies joined in a Thanksgiving celebration to commemorate the victory over the British at Saratoga. It too was a one-time event. In 1789, George Washington tried to establish a regular Thanksgiving Day, to no avail. But in 1827, magazine editor Sarah Hale started a one-woman crusade in Godey’s Lady’s Book urging readers to write their politicians in support of a national holiday. Over a period of four decades she kept up her campaign. • It took the victory at Gettysburg to put the public in a thanksgiving mood, and in 1863,
• For Thanksgiving in 1909, bakers in Jersey City and New York City got together and decided to send President Taft a gigantic mince pie. It was some four feet (1.2 m) wide and six inches (15 cm) deep. Somehow, the pie disappeared without a trace on the train trip to Washington. At Christmas time, they decided to try again. But this time they took no chances: they packed it in a heavy box, nailed it shut, and had four union members sit on top of it all the way to the White House.
• Since then, there has only been one controversial tampering with the tradition. In 1939, store merchants who wanted a greater number of shopping days between Thanksgiving and Christmas pressured President Franklin D. Roosevelt to move Thanksgiving ahead one week. This made the merchants happy but upset just about everyone else. Millions of Americans, in defiance of the new proclamation, continued to take the fourth Thursday off from work instead of the third Thursday. In 1941, Roosevelt admitted his error and returned the holiday to the traditional date.
• William Maxwell Evarts, Secretary of State in 1877, was asked to give a speech after an important Thanksgiving function. As he rose to his feet his opening comment was, “You have all been devoting your attention to a turkey stuffed with sage. Now you are about to listen to a sage stuffed with turkey!” □
DINNER IS SERVED
• About 275 million turkeys are raised in the U.S. annually. About 45 million of those will be eaten during Thanksgiving. • The average weight of a turkey purchased for Thanksgiving dinner is 15 pounds. • It’s estimated that 90 percent of Americans eat turkey on Thanksgiving. • An average person consumes about 2,250 calories during Thanksgiving dinner. • It’s been estimated that about 20 percent of all cranberries produced each year are eaten at Thanksgiving.

I am beyond excited that “Catching Fire” will be in theaters soon. I am really intrigued by all the new Tributes that will be battling it out in this film. What can you tell me about the actor who plays Brutus, the scar y and kick-butt Tribute from District 2? -- Haley W., via email
You still have a couple of more months to wait -- until Monday, Jan. 6, at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT, to be exact. However, I do have some good news to share to help ease the pain of waiting: MTV announced that the hit series will return for a fourth season in 2014 with 12 new episodes. Additionally, the network will debut the new talk show, “Wolf Watch,” set to air weekly after each “Teen Wolf” episode.

Tipping for Salon Services Should not be Guilt-Driven Dear Mary: Do you tip a hairdresser if that person also owns the salon? I go to a shop where the owners provide the services. I have always debated whether to give them a tip. ® What do you think is apropriate? -- Mary V.
Dear Roy: Sounds like it’s time to bring out the big artillery. Make a trip to the grocery store for Twenty Mule Team Borax (you’ll find it in the laundry aisle) and on the way home, stop at the home improvement store for FINE drywall sandpaper (it’s not really sandpaper, it looks more like window screening and is sometimes called a drywall sponge). Mix 1 cup borax and 3 cups baking soda into a scouring powder. Dampen the floor of the shower, sprinkle on the powder generously and then scrub the floor with the drywall sandpaper as you would a sponge. Rinse and repeat as necessary. Caution: This is for otherwise hopeless situations and textured fiberglass tub and shower floors, not smooth fiberglass surfaces. * * * Dear Mary: For many years, I’ve been darning socks and hose. I know it must sound old fashioned to you, but the hose I wear are expensive and I like to make them last a long time. I have a problem. Rowdy for Rawhide Rowdy is a wonderful, loving and friendly dog … 99 percent of the time. When we try to take his rawhide from him, he growls and lunges and tries to bite if reprimanded. And when we put him in his crate for a timeout, he growls and darts into a corner. When we calmly try to get him out of the corner to go to the crate, he growls and barks and bares his teeth and will lunge at us before running into his crate. Once in his crate, if we look at him or talk to him, he bares his teeth, barks, growls, snaps, lunges and snarls. We have never hit him or punished him in any way other than time out in his crate. Created by Tom Underwood
My boyfriend and I are now scared of Rowdy and don’t know what to do. We have a puppy and don’t want her to model his behavior. What should we do? I am truly afraid he will bite us. He only acts like this with the rawhide and timeouts -- no other times. The rest of the time he’s his sweet loving self.

You know, Einstein said the definition of insanity is doing the same thing again and again and expecting different results. First on the to-do list: Rid your house of those rawhides! It’s not going to hurt Rowdy to go without rawhides until he learns to let go of them, and you are likely to get hurt if you don’t cut off his supply.
(Mega Maze Solution on page 14)
The next thing on that list you’ve already done: acknowledge that you are in over your head. Rowdy is warning you with every tool in his belt -barking, snarling, growling, baring his teeth, lunging at you -- that he is going to bite you if you don’t alter your approach. This situation begs for professional intervention for two reasons:
1) Rowdy is a danger to you and others.
2) You have a new puppy, and you don’t want two Rowdys on your hands.

A professional trainer -- who specializes in aggression -- will work with Rowdy to eliminate the problem behaviors, and will work with you to understand the root cause and modify your approach to Rowdy so you get the results you want. Depending on the dog and the dedication of the dog owner, most behavioral problems can be eradicated or at least controlled -- i.e., if Rowdy’s problem is truly limited to rawhide, no more rawhide! A professional trainer will also demonstrate the concept of crate training. It may be too late for Rowdy to ever truly love a crate, but it’s not too late CORNER: Turn to page 10 2 EGAP RELCASEY’S LIF

Failure to Take Medications after a Heart Attack can Increase the Risk of Further Problems
It is truly remarkable that less than 50 percent of patients who have had a heart attack remain compliant with their medications. And a new study published in the American Heart Journal showed that patients taking their medications continuously were 24 percent less likely to ever be readmitted to hospital for a heart attack or stroke than those who were not complaint. Even stopping one of the needed medications increased risk of a second heart attack. Here are the medications that should be routinely considered after someone has had a heart attack: Most important is the daily use of aspirin. Most experts believe that as little as one “baby aspirin” daily is sufficient to reduce the risk of a recurrent heart attack. Occasionally, irritation to the lining of the stomach may occur, leading to indigestion and heartburn. Rarely, damage can be severe enough to cause a significant gastrointestinal bleed. For every 10,000 patients taking a baby aspirin each day, a total of 250 heart attacks, strokes or sudden death will be prevented and 40 cases of serious bleeding will occur. According to the Harvard Men’s Health Watch newsletter, approximately 6 patients are helped for everyone who is harmed. Every expert in the field believes the risk is well worth it. Lowering cholesterol by the use of statins has clearly been shown to reduce the risk of a recurrent heart attack, provided cholesterol levels are elevated. The first choice should always be a generic. Recently, the generic Lipitor (atorvastatin) has become available. Much more effective than Dr. David Lipschitz is the author of the book the previous generics (simvastatin, pravachol, “Breaking the Rules of Aging.” To find out more about Dr. lovastatin), atorvastatin is likely to reduce the bad David Lipschitz and read features by other Creators Synor LDL cholesterol to the target range in the majordicate writers and cartoonists, visit the Creators Syndicate ity of cases. YOUR
SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margenau
A Social Security Lesson for Teachers It’s once again time for me to turn the tables on my old teachers and ask them to take a seat and pay attention as I deliver my annual lecture on the Social Security offsets. This lesson isn’t directed at all teachers -just those in states where educators do not pay into Social Security. The two biggest such states are California and Texas, but there are a few others. And teachers really are not the only audience for this lecture. Anyone who works at a job that is not covered by Social Security (that’s a little less than 10 percent of the population) is impacted by the same rules. And because so many people don’t understand these laws, they mistakenly think they are being singled out for Social Security reductions that don’t impact anyone else. And they are simply wrong about that. Folks who spend the bulk of their careers in jobs not covered by Social Security are potentially subject to a couple of offsets that impact either their own Social Security benefit (based on Social Security-covered work they did outside of their regular job) or any benefits they potentially might be due from their spouse’s Social Security record. And by the way, as a retired federal employee getting a civil service pension, I, too, am impacted by both offsets. But because I understand the law, they make perfect sense to me, and I know they are fair. I will try to explain them to you. One offset is called the windfall elimination provision. This is the one that impacts your own Social Security benefit. The other is called the government pension offset, or GPO, and it reduces any spousal benefits you might be due.

Blakeney Pottery Ltd. made your cup and saucer. They made earthenware in Stoke, Staffordshire, England, from 1968 to 2000. Blakeney Pottery made flow-blue pieces around 1970 and should not be confused with the flow-blue ware made in the 1800s and early 1900s. Original flow-blue pieces were not marked with the words “Flow Blue.” Blakeney’s “Romantic” pattern was inspired by an early flowblue pattern by the name of “Watteau.” There was a renewed interest in flow-blue dishes from around the 1960s to the 1980s. As a result, there were a handful of factories that produced new pieces. Your cup and saucer are circa 1970, and the set would probably be worth $15 to $25.
