became the symbol of Athens. • French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte loved violets so much that he adopted them as his “signature flower.” When his wife Josephine died in 1814, Napoleon covered her grave with violet blossoms. After he was exiled to Elba in 1814, he told friends that he would return before the violets bloomed, leading his followers to call him Corporal Violet. His supporters used violets to test loyalty. When people were asked if they liked violets and they responded, “Eh, bien,” their loyalty to Napoleon was assumed proven. • The common blue violet is also a favorite of the people in Wisconsin, Rhode Island, Illinois, and New Jersey, states that have all declared it their official state flower. •

HOT STUFF (from page one) depending on their chemical composition. Basaltic lava, also known as Hawaiian lava, has a temperature of 1,832 to 2,282° F (1,000 – 1,250° C). It has the least amount of silica content and is the fastest-flowing type of lava. Andesite lava temperatures range from 1,742 to 2,192° F (950 – 1,200° C), while dacite temperatures are between 1,472 and 2,012° F (800 – 1,100° C). This is the type that erupted from Mt. St. Helens. Rhyolitic lava has a high gas content, flows very slowly, and reaches temperatures of 1,292 to 1,652° F (700 – 900° C). • Actors Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon teamed up with Marilyn Monroe in 1959 to star in a romantic comedy called Some Like It Hot. The plot featured Curtis and Lemmon as musicians who disguised themselves as women in order to escape Mafia gangsters whom the pair had witnessed committing a crime. The movie was set in 1929 in Chicago in the midst of Prohibition, around the time of the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre. •
Although Marilyn was a box office star, she was responsible for a multitude of difficulties in filming due to her addiction to pills, resulting in a lack of concentration and inability to memorize her lines. One scene required 47 takes for her to get the simple three-word line of “It’s me, Sugar” correct. Curtis and Lemmon made private wagers on how many takes would be needed until Marilyn got it right. 4. Dwell on the positive. The simple act of gratitude will change your perspective. Compared to about 95 percent of the people on this Earth, you are wealthy and blessed with abundance. You may not have it all, but when you get right down to it, you do have enough. You’ve had a setback or two, but it’s not the end of the road. Failure is not the end unless you quit. We can’t allow one setback -- or even a series of setbacks -- to define us.

How to Get Your Perspective Back on Track
* It was 20th-century American philosopher, writer and educator Susanne Katherina Langer who made the following sage observation: “If we would have new knowledge, we must get us a whole world of new questions.”
Everyday CHEAPSKATE
These days, it’s easy to fall into the muck and mire of worry and defeat.® Personal crises like a financial emergency or the loss of a job by Mary Hunt -- or worse, your home -- punctuated by the daily news can ruin your perspective and dump you into a pit of despair.
* In Western cultures, the owl is associated with wisdom, but in some Asian countries, it’s traditionally a symbol of stupidity. * In the 9th century, a Norseman named Sigurd Eysteinsson earned the name Sigurd the Mighty while helping to lead the Viking conquest of what is now northern Scotland. As part of a continuing effort to expand his Scottish conquest, Sigurd challenged a native ruler, Mael Brigte the Bucktoothed, to a battle. Each leader was supposed to bring 40 men to the battle, but Sigurd broke his own rule and brought 80 warriors. Unsurprisingly, Brigte lost. After beheading his defeated foe, Sigurd displayed Brigte’s head on his saddle as a trophy of war. He got his just desserts in the end, though; as he rode, Sigurd’s leg was scratched by Brigte’s buck teeth. The seemingly insignificant wound festered, and Sigurd the Mighty was killed by the infection.

Heimlich went on to invent the Heimlich MicroTrach, a portable oxygen system that allows direct delivery oxygen to the lungs through a tube inserted through the throat. His invention gave patients more freedom to move, as well as making their oxygen tanks last longer. • It’s estimated that tens of thousands of people have been saved from choking by use of the Heimlich maneuver, including such famous names as Ronald Reagan, Elizabeth Taylor, Goldie Hawn, Walter Matthau, and Jack Lemmon.

As of this writing, no official statement has been made about her departure from the show, only that the show was back to its “original three judges.” But never fear -- once a member of the “DWTS” family, always a member of the “DWTS” family. As we know, dancers come and go, and come back again (Julianne’s brother, Derek, being one such dancer) depending on their schedules, so I actually don’t see why it shouldn’t be the Julianne Hough same for judges. Methinks the newlywed just wanted to spend time with her new hubby, NHL player Brooks Laich, whom she married in July. Julianne also recently launched her own line of workout gear, so at the moment, she’s got a lot on her plate. *** When will all my CW superhero shows be back? -- Kyle T., via email ABC/Craig Sjodin

As far as the solar panels or modules, they are made up of individual cells. When the panels are put together on your roof they form an array. If the panels are “DC,” (direct current) they will go together in a string of usually seven or eight and ultimately lead to an inverter mounted by your electric panel. But some panels today (like SunPower) have an inverter built into each one, which converts the power panels generated from DC to AC (alternating) current, which is what we use in our homes. If that’s the case, then there is a lot more flexibility with how the panels can be placed on your roof, and increased efficiency as well.
Q: Terrific! What other terms
should I know?
Don’t forget the basics – power, energy and electricity all refer to the same thing – what you are making on your roof at a lower cost than what you can buy it for from the utility company. When there’s talk of the load of your home, it refers to all the power needed to keep your home running comfortably. When your past electric bills are collected, that’s so the total amount of power you use in a year can be determined, so that a system can be designed to produce that same amount of power over the course of 12 months. Your goal should always be 100% offset – an amount of power generated by the solar system over a year’s time that is the same or a little more than what you have used over a year’s time in the past. Renova Solar is an award-winning local company founded a decade ago that designs and installs commercial and residential solar and advanced battery systems. Solar consultants will answer all your questions and help you decide if solar is right for you - not pressure you into buying a system. Learn more at

From another reader: “I have had Ginger, a 6-month-old female toy poodle, for four months. I already had a male toy poodle who is 3 years old. I am leaning toward possessive aggression and dog aggression. I think she has a split personality. She will jump in my lap and loves to be petted, but she gets into fights with my other dog several times a day. Today she growled and snapped at me when I tried to get her off the kitchen table. And later, when I broke up the fight with her brother, she

That means about 60% of Ameri760-320-1630 cans do not have a will or living trust. Furthermore, according to a Google Consumer survey, 63% of Americans do not have a will at all, and another 9% have a will that is either invalid or out of date. For example, did you sign it? Was it properly witnessed? Let’s face it—planning for end-oflife isn’t a pleasant task. The topic can seem depressing; maybe even a little scary. Many Americans avoid setting up a will because they simply don’t want to think about their own death. It’s just not a comfortable thing to think about, and people will often delay it until it’s too late. “What do you mean too late?” If you die without a will, you are said to have died “intestate.” Today, all fifty states have laws that distributed property when a person dies intestate. In other words, if you don’t have a will, the state has one for you. That means that people you don’t even know (or even like) may end up with your estate. Wouldn’t you rather decide for yourself who inherits your estates after you are gone? Then you have to put your wishes down in writing via a will or a trust. “What’s the difference?” Simply put “PROBATE.” Probate is a legal nightmare and can easily be avoided with a revocable living trust. Probate can become very expensive. California is one of only a few states that let lawyers charge a “statutory fee”—an amount that is a percentage of the value of the assets that go through probate. This means that probate lawyers’ fees can be very high in relation to the amount of actual work done. TV talk show host and financial advisor Suzie Orman advises trusts over wills stating, “Do you know why his lawyer doesn’t want him to know about revocable living trusts? Who do you think gets those probate fees? The lawyer. So trusts are something that everyone should have and I keep talking about it.” (Jun 13, 2013 YouTube video) Visit our website:

SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margenau
Social Security: Short and Quick Because Social Security rules can be so confusing to so many people, and because it can take some time to explain those rules, I usually spend an entire column trying to clarify just one topic. But every once in a while, I like to give short and quick answers to as many questions as possible covering a wide array of subjects:
Q:
I am turning 66 and am about to file for my Social Security. What documents will I need?
A:
Generally, you will need your birth certificate and a copy of your last W-2 form (or tax return if you are self-employed). You need the former to prove you are old enough to qualify for benefits. You need the latter because your benefit is based on your earnings. The Social Security Administration will have a record of all your past earnings, but they may not have the most recent year posted yet.
Q:
If I apply for my Social Security at age 62 but still work part time, I understand that I am penalized if I make more than about $16,000 per year. Will those penalties apply to me for the rest of my life?
A:
No. Once you reach age 66, those penalties go away. You could make a million dollars per year from age 66 on and you’d still get your Social Security checks.
Q:
Why does the law require me to carr y my Social Security card and my Medicare card with me at all times?
A:
There is no such law. I haven’t had my Social Security card in my wallet for over 40 years. And my Medicare card is buried in one of my desk drawers. I dig it out when I go to the doctor. But even they rarely ask to see it anymore.
Q:
I am getting Social Security. We have a 16-year-old daughter who has been severely disabled since birth. She is also getting benefits on my account. Will her checks stop when she turns 18?
A:
No, her Social Security checks will continue, probably for the rest of her life. But shortly before her 18th birthday, you need to contact SSA and fill out some forms to get her converted from regular dependent child’s benefits to what they call “disabled adult child” benefits.
Q:
I know you’ve answered this question a thousand and one times before. But now I’m 62 and it applies to me and I’m finally paying attention! Can I take my husband’s Social Security now and save my own until I’m 66?
A:
Well, for the thousand and second time, no! If you take any Social Security before age 66, you MUST apply for your own benefits first. By the way, I was assuming your husband is still alive. If he’s not, then you can do what you proposed because the rule I just cited doesn’t apply to widows.
Q:
Recently, I got a letter from Social Security telling me they overpaid me about $5,000. They want the money back. What can I do?
A:
If you disagree with the reason for the alleged overpayment, you should file an appeal and ask them to review your case. If you accept the fact that you’ve been paid too much, you’ve got three choices. Pay it back all at once. Pay it back in installments, letting them take a certain amount each month out of your Social Security check. Or if you can’t afford to pay it back, and if you can prove to them that it wasn’t your fault that you were overpaid, you can file for a waiver, essentially asking them to write off the debt. * * * If you have a Social Security question, Tom Margenau has the answer. We have an unusual situation. My wife and I just got married about two years ago. I am 72, and she is 71. And this was a first-time marriage for both of us. But I’m worried that I might die before we hit the 10-year marriage mark and my wife won’t get widow’s benefits on my record. Are there exceptions to that rule?

SSA is very strict about privacy laws. Those laws say the information from your mother’s records can only be given to her. If she is mentally incapable of handling her own affairs, they can be shared with her representative. You can get a power of attorney designation for lots of reasons, not just mental incompetence. If your mother is mentally alert, she has to change her own address. If she is not, then you should request to be what SSA calls her “representative payee.” If you do that, it not only means you can handle her Social Security affairs, it also means her Social Security benefits will come in your name for her.

Now that my children are entering their teens, is it possible for them to avoid my fate? Are acne problems like mine hereditary, or can they avoid the problems I experienced with proper hygiene? -- B.B.
M.D.
Modern Thoughts on the Paleo Diet DEAR DR. ROACH: After a few months of stress eating, I have gained a lot of weight. People swear that the Paleo diet would help me lose weight and feel better. Do you recommend it? -- H.C. ANSWER: Most diets have good points and bad points, and work better or worse for different people. The Paleo diet is no exception. The theory behind Paleo is that humans are best adapted to the diet that Paleolithic man ate 10,000 or more years ago, which was high in meat, with relatively large amounts of fruits and vegetables, and no grains or dairy. I disagree with the theory on several points, especially that I think it is a fundamental misunderstanding of adaptation, in that there’s no guarantee that it produces a “best” diet, merely one that’s good enough. Paleolithic man ate what he had to to survive, not necessarily what was optimal for his health. The part about the Paleo diet that I do like is its recommendation against highly refined grains and other processed foods. I don’t agree with the usual recommendation to eat so much meat. It’s important to remember that the meat Paleolithic man ate, until just before being eaten, was busily running away from him and did not have remotely the fat content of today’s supermarket meat. The nuts and vegetables available to modern man are vastly different from those available to Paleolithic man, according to a great talk from Christina Warriner. Finally, there is abundant evidence that preagricultural man, from many different societies, had atherosclerosis in the unlikely event he lived into his 40s.
ANSWER: Acne, familiar to almost all teenagers, is caused mostly by the bacteria P. acnes, but also by hormonal changes that affect the skin oils and cells, predisposing the skin to bacterial growth. Hygiene has a limited effect on acne, with overwashing and oily cosmetics causing the most problems. Acne does tend to run in families, so your children are more likely to have worse acne than usual. The association of ulcerative colitis, a type of inflammatory bowel disease, with isotretinoin (Accutane) is intensely debated, with the most recent data and the opinion of professional groups generally that isotretinoin probably does not cause IBD. While I can understand why you might wish to avoid it, it remains the most effective treatment, and is still worth considering if other options fail. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband has heart disease. He’s tried every statin drug to lower his cholesterol. He cannot tolerate any of them. The muscle pain and weakness caused by these drugs is severe. His cholesterol remains high, even with proper diet and exercise. I’ve heard that CoQ10 works well for lowering cholesterol. Is there any validity to this? -- Anon. ANSWER: CoQ10 (ubiquinone) does not affect cholesterol itself. It does allow some people to tolerate statins who otherwise wouldn’t. I think it is worth a try, especially for someone like your husband, who has coronary heart disease and who would get much benefit from a statin.
***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. LONG-TERM CARE
*** DEAR DR. ROACH: In my late teens and early 20s, I suffered bad acne that resulted in scarring that is still visible now, even though I am in my 40s. I assume it will be visible for the rest of my life. My acne was cured when I took Accutane. Now I also suffer from ulcerative colitis. Even though I can’t make a direct connection as a side effect of Accutane, the symptoms of UC first showed shortly after I completed my treatments for acne.

VETERANS POST by Freddie Groves
Claims Decisions in Just 30 days The Department of Veterans Affairs new Decision Ready Claims program promises to get your claim sorted out and decided in 30 days. The pilot program started in Minnesota in May. Since then, the VA has been training people to push claims through quickly. Now, everyone is set to go. All they need is the claims to start rolling in. Here are your easy steps: Hook up with an accredited Veterans Service Organization, likely the American Legion or VFW. Collect all your documents. Be sure to go to your claim exam if required. Have the VSO send off your claim electronically. Start the 30-day countdown. There are a few caveats, however. For those who qualify, this will be a great improvement over the previous 100-plus day wait, but that 30 days doesn’t start until the claim is received at the VA. If you have to hunt down related paperwork and documents, the meter isn’t running yet. Another caveat: You need to go to your claim exam if one is required. And yet another caveat: All types of claims aren’t covered just yet. If you’re asking for an upgrade to a disability claim you already have, yes, they’re accepting those. But for other types of claims, have your VSO check to see if those are being worked on yet. And still another caveat: In the past, the VA had to hunt down all your medical and service records for you. Now, with this new program, you’re on your own. To learn more about how to get your claim decided in under the 30 days, go online to www. benefits.va.gov/compensation/DRC.asp. The page is loaded with information, including how to find a VSO and whether your type of claim is eligible for the program. * * * Freddy Groves regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible. Bodies that suffered extensive trauma won’t be accepted either.

I’m looking for a free or cheap way to dispose of my remains after I'm gone. What happens to people like me after they die? --Old and Broke Dear Broke: If you’re looking to eliminate your funeral and burial costs, as well as help advance medical research, donating your body to science is a great option to consider. Here’s what you should know. Body Donations It’s estimated that each year, at least 20,000 people donate their deceased body to medical facilities throughout the country to be used in medical research projects, anatomy lessons and surgical practice.
• Organ donation: Most programs require that you donate your whole body in its entirety. So if you want to be an organ donor (with the exception of your eyes), you won’t qualify to be a whole body donor too.
Once you locate a program in your area, call and ask them to mail you an information/ registration packet that will explain exactly how their program works. To sign up, you’ll simply need to fill out a couple of forms and return them. But, you can always change your mind by contacting the program and removing your name from their registration list. Or, some programs offer memorial services at their facility at a later date without the remains. • Body transporting: Most programs will cover transporting your body to their facility within a certain distance. However, some may charge.
After using your body, these facilities will then provide free cremation – which typically costs $600 to $4,000 – and will either bury or scatter your ashes in a local cemetery or return them to your family, usually within a year or two.
