Step 3. Get the biggest cooking pot you can find. Fill it with tap water; set it on a burner to High; and bring it to full boil. Turn the burner off, and pour in the laundry detergent, Cascade dishwasher detergent and Borax. Stir gently until the products dissolve in the boiling water.

Home on the Fourth of July

A lot of dogs -- and Madonna -- suffer from brontophobia, an irrational fear of thunder. Well, to a dog, a Fourth of July celebration is just a rapidfire succession of thunderbolts: loud and scary.

This Independence Day, do your dog a favor and don’t bring him to the party. Instead, follow these guidelines to keep your dog safe and comfortable on what can be a real fright night for our canine companions:

-- Take your dog outside to relieve himself before you leave the house.

-- Treat your dog to an extra-long walk or a strenuous game of fetch to burn off energy and wear him out.

-- While you’re out, leave your dog in a secure room in the house or, even better, in his crate.

-- Close all windows, blinds and drapes to help deflect the sound and the flashes of light.

-- Leave the lights on in his area to further dilute the flashes of light from fireworks or sparklers.

-- Surround him with his favorite chew toys and a soft blanket.

-- Keep your departure that night simple, without a lot of fanfare that could excite him or make him anxious.

-- Play music or keep the television on at a normal volume -- and tuned to a channel that will not be airing a live fireworks display.

-- If your dog must stay outside for some reason, make the extra effort to ensure all fences and gates are secure.

-- Make sure his tags are attached to his collar and contain current contact information.

By heeding these precautions and planning ahead, you can avoid the close call this family experienced last year:

Summer Activities Close to Home

After a long winter that kept many of us who live in the colder climates indoors, summer is finally here. Let’s take advantage of it and be out and about! All of these ideas involve the cooperation of others.

--Ask at the library about starting a seniors’ nostalgia book club in the evening. Read books that you read many years ago and talk about whether your opinions have changed. Find out if the library can show old movies that you haven’t seen in years. Consider making these grandparent/grandchild nights.

On that same theme, look into craft nights with your grandchildren at the library. Offer to volunteer during the week in exchange, perhaps teaching a small class on one of your skills.

--See if a local coffee shop is willing to let a group meet one morning a week. Ask for volunteer speakers from community businesses.

Men Ask About Widow’s Benefits

I get lots of questions about widow’s benefits. And surprisingly, most of them come from men concerned about the benefits their wives will get after they die. Here are some examples.

Q:

I waited until I was 70 to start my Social Security. Those benefits just kicked in last month. I did that for two reasons: to maximize my retirement benefits and to make sure my 66-year-old wife gets the highest possible benefits after I am gone. So imagine my shock when I discovered that my wife’s spousal rate is just 50 percent of my age 66 rate! Does this mean her future widow’s benefits will also be based on my age 66 benefit amount?

A:

Don’t worry. After you die, your wife will get 100 percent of your age 70 rate. For reasons I’ve never fully understood, a wife does not share in the extra benefits a husband earns for delaying retirement until age 70, but a widow does.

Q:

My wife and I are both 64. I am planning to wait until 70 to file for my own Social Security so my wife will get the maximum widow’s benefit when I die. She was a homemaker all her life and doesn’t have her own Social Security. But if I die before turning 70 -- in other words, before starting my Social Security -- will she get anything?

Q:

My wife and I are both 72 years old. I started my Social Security when I was 62 and she took spousal benefits on my record at the same time. Now I’m upset with myself for doing that because I’ve heard that by taking reduced benefits, my wife’s future widow’s benefits also will be reduced. Is this true?

A: Yes, it’s true. But there is a tiny bit of

good news for you. By taking benefits at 62, you took a 25 percent reduction in benefits. In other words, you are getting 75 percent of your full retirement rate. But a widow over age 66 is guaranteed to get a minimum of 82.5 percent. So when you die, your wife’s widow’s rate will be slightly higher than what you were getting at the time of death.

Q:

I am 66 and just started getting my own Social Security. My wife is about to turn 62 and wants to start taking her own smaller Social Security check. I told her not to take reduced retirement benefits because that reduction will carr y over to her future widow’s benefits. Am I advising her correctly?

A:

No, you are not. Her future widow’s rate essentially depends on one thing only: Her age when you die. As explained above, if she is 66 or older when that happens, she will get 100 percent of your retirement benefit, less her own retirement rate. And it doesn’t matter if that was a reduced retirement rate or not.

Here is a quick example. Let’s say your age 66 rate is $2,200 per month, and her full retirement rate is $1,500. If she takes reduced retirement at 62, she’d get 75 percent of that, or $1,125. When you die, she would keep getting her $1,125, and she’d get an additional $1,075 in widow’s benefits to take her up to your $2,200 level. If she waits until she is 66 to start her own retirement, meaning she’d be getting $1,500 per month when you die, then she

Collectors Make a Beeline for Porcelain Plates Q:

I have enclosed a photo of a porcelain plate that my mother-in-law gave me before she passed away. There are four plates, each about 8 inches in diameter and decorated with a neoclassical scene. They are marked on the back with a shape that looks like a beehive.

My mother-in-law didn’t know much about the plates because they were handed down to her from a relative and she wasn’t really interested in the histor y. I would like to find information about the age, maker and value, but I honestly don’t know how to go about it.

What can you tell me about the plates?

Would you consider them to be collectible?

Do they have any value, and should I have them insured?

Thomas Lawrence Ltd. made “Falcon ware.” The pottery made earthenware and was founded by Thomas Lawrence in Staffordshire, England, around 1892. The factory was called the Falcon Works, thus the name “Falcon ware.” The number “478” is the design number. Falcon ware was not made after 1962.
