Seventy-five percent of Americans own pets, opening their homes to an estimated 77 million cats and 61 million dogs. Why do we love our pets so much? The answer is pretty clear when we see that 94 percent of pet owners say their animal pal not only provides companionship, but makes them smile more than once a day. Tidbits looks at some interesting facts about our furry and feathery friends who add this important dimension to our lives. • The canine nose works thousands of times more efficiently than the human nose, according to scientists.

Ray Charles Robinson was born Sept. 23, 1930, in Albany, Georgia, to Aretha Williams, a sharecropper, and Baily Robinson, a railroad repair man and mechanic. He began showing blindness at age 5, and became totally blind by age 7. He attended school at the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind in St. Augustine from 1937-45, where he developed his musical talent. Music was in his soul, and by 1947 he was already making recordings. The rest is musical history.

Most people claim that their dogs watch television. But the reality is, a lot of these dogs are merely following the movement of objects on the TV screen. They might even bark at the screen, especially if animal sounds are heard. However, they do not interpret the activity on the screen the same way we do. A dog can’t make as many distinctions of objects as we do.

A: You have a “Twin-Tee” set made by Hall
China Co. Morning or afternoon tea was a popular ritual for homemakers in the early 1900s. Tea was served in teacups that were smaller than currentday mugs. The pot with the short spout was used for hot water, while the one with the long spout was used for brewing tea. Introduced in 1926, the pattern is “Floral Garden” and “847” is the design number. Twin-Tee sets included two pots and a matching trivet, which were decorated in solid colors or floral designs. Hall China Co. is still located in East Liverpool, Ohio. Your circa 1926 set would probably be worth $220 to $250.

Provincial is the name of the shape, which was decorated with several different designs. Decorated with cocky roosters, California is the pattern. Dear Mar y: How does my daughter go about building credit? She is 23 years old and lives at home. She works part time as a cashier. Fulltime jobs with benefits just aren’t available. She has applied for numerous charge cards at department stores, such as Kohl’s and Target, but she always is denied. What can she do to begin building a credit score? --Terri W., California Dear Terri: She should stay away from department store cards. She needs to concentrate on getting a bank-issued credit card. Go to http://www. IndexCreditCards.com to find a complete listing of all credit cards currently available, arranged by category. If she is still unable to get a card on her own, you could add her as an “authorized user” to one of your existing credit cards. This would not present a liability to her. However, she would benefit from your good credit, as the activity on the account would be reported to her credit file. Another option would be a prepaid card that is linked to money you put up as collateral. In essence, she would be borrowing your cash. Though you’d lock up your money with the card, it would ensure that she doesn’t get in over her head. This would be a way to help her get started managing a credit card responsibly while still having a financial safety net. For a good secured card, her best bet is at a local credit union. Otherwise, the Public Savings Bank secured Visa (http://www.PublicBankCard.com) is a good choice. With the exception of a $79 sign-up fee, there are no monthly or annual fees. It has an 11.24 percent interest rate and a 25-day grace period, and it promises to report to all three credit bureaus

cars in the garage, my husband has taken it over to store his “lifetime treasures” and his workbench. I seldom complain. However, last month he bought me a new car and I want to keep it in our garage. We have an automatic door opener and can enter our home directly without going outside. I love my husband, but he is stubborn and does not want to make space for me. How can I make this happen?
A:
Men are not as serious about nesting as women are, and we appreciate having privacy in our own cave. Most of us just throw things in boxes and occasionally do not even know where we have them. For example, in an emergency, such as a toilet overflowing, men find it easier to dash to the store to buy a new plunger rather than search for the one in the garage. Husbands do not define clutter in the same words as wives do. The proper definition should be “clutter includes items that do not improve your lifestyle, are not used regularly and do not increase in value.” Your goal is to let him keep half of the garage while CLIP AND SAVE

Columnist’s Bet is Worse Than His Bark Q:
You wrote a column about this “ARF” business. I took Social Security at 62, but my benefit did not get adjusted at age 66 like you said it should. Why not?
Q:
I took reduced benefits at 63 and I’m now 80. I don’t ever remember getting higher benefits at 66 like your last column said I should. What can I do about this?
Q:
I took Social Security at 62. I just turned 66. Based on your recent column, I called my Social Security office and asked for my ARF. They just laughed at me! Now what do I do?
A:
These are just three examples of the scores of e-mails I received in response to a column I wrote several weeks ago about a Social Security provision called the “adjustment to the reduction factor” or ARF. It’s a policy that allows a working person who is at least age 62 to get some reduced early retirement benefits from Social Security, and then at age 66 have his or her benefit adjusted to remove the reduction factor for those months when no benefits were paid. Almost every e-mail I received came from someone who was not eligible for an adjustment. And now I know I should have listened to one of my former colleagues at the Social Security Administration. He bet me $20 that if I tried to explain the ARF provisions in a column, no one would understand it. Well, buddy, the check is in the mail! But I’m not giving up. I am going to try one more time to explain the reduction factor adjustment as simply and plainly as I can. It’s not that I’m trying to be a noble public servant helping people understand complex provisions of the law. It’s just that I need to open up some space in my e-mail inbox! If you started your Social Security benefits before the full retirement age of 66, those benefits came with an early retirement reduction of roughly one-half of 1 percent for each month you received early benefits. And if you are still working and making more than the earnings penalty threshold (currently $14,160 per year) -- forcing the Social Security Administration to suspend some or all of your monthly Social Security checks due to your excess earnings -- the ARF provision says when you reach age 66, your benefits are AUTOMATICALLTY refigured to give you credit for those months when you did not get a Social Security check. For example, let’s say you took Social Security at age 62. Those benefits came with a 48-month early retirement penalty resulting in about a 25 percent reduction in your benefits. But if you worked between ages 62 and 66, causing the Social Security Administration to suspend your benefits for -- let’s say -- 20 of those 48 months, meaning you only received 28 Social Security checks between 62 and 66, at age 66 your benefit would be automatically recalculated. And instead of a 48-month early retirement penalty involving a 25 percent reduction in benefits, your new rate would have only a 28-month penalty with about a 14 percent benefit reduction. The advantage to the ARF policy is that you are able to collect some Social Security benefits before age 66, even though you are working. And your long-

check. So, one more time, let’s go over these important points about the adjustment to the reduction factor (ARF) provision. One: You would be due an ARF adjustment only if you took early retirement AND there were some months when your Social Security benefits were suspended because you were working and making tooSenior much Benefits money to qualify for Social Security. 1/16th page, 26x Two: If you are due an ARF adjustment, you get Feb. 28 - Aug. 1, 2010 ♦ [Vol. 6: Issue #10 - #32] it automatically. Genealogy Vacations It doesn’t take much for my genealogy bug to rise again, and I’m not the only one. What’s re-ignited my interest this time is a quotation I found online: To forget one’s ancestors is to be a brook without a source, a tree without a root. Going on vacation to hunt for our roots is becoming very popular among seniors, but a genealogy vacation isn’t something you can do on the spur of Some are the moment. Youthings need to plan farjust ahead. For a successful trip, have a goal in mind, whether too good to change... it’s to research a certain person or just to see what other family information you can find. Look into genealogy-specific tours, especially if you’re going to a foreign country. Translators will come in handy, and they’ll know details about the area. Check the genealogy tours by European Focus (www.europeanfocus.com). It will even do the photography for you! Elderhostel, now called Exploritas (www.exploritas.org), sponsors trips around the world. Also consider a visit to the National Archives in Washington, D.C. If you go, take copies of all of your records, not the originals. That name jotted on a scrap of paper might be the key to your research. Also, take along two digital cameras with extra memory. Take a handful of memory sticks and put the photos on those as duplicates. Mail them back to yourself, just in case. If it’s not possible for you to travel, or if your family tree is already completed, there are still ways for you to stay active in genealogy and help others at the same time. Consider teaching a how-to genealogy class. Hunt for genealogy books at flea markets and yard sales. Look at the index: Is your family listed? When complete records are unavailable, sometimes it’s enough to go visit the general area where our ancestors once lived.

I was ver y sad to learn that Capt. Phil Harris of “Deadliest Catch” had passed away. How will they handle his passing on the show? -- Timothy G. in Florida
A:
The Discovery Channel’s hit show returns for its sixth season on April 13, and Capt. Phil will be in most of the 16 episodes. Capt. Phil died on Feb. 9 after suffering a stroke two weeks earlier while unloading crab from his boat, the Cornelia Marie, Capt. Phil Harris at Saint Paul Island, Alaska. He was 53. His death won’t be dealt with until episodes 12 and 13. According to Phil Segal, president of the production company that produces “Deadliest Catch” for the Discovery Channel: “He was fishing all the way up to the end. We’re so concerned about the family and the crew right now that we haven’t stopped to think about how we’re going to deal with this. We’ll have to figure it out in the weeks and months ahead.” ***

Michael Vartan, 41, is co-starring in the upcoming film called “High School,” which also stars Colin Hanks, Adrien Brody and Michael Chiklis. However, his most important upcoming engagement is his 2011 nuptials. He proposed to girlfriend Lauren Skaar in March and is involved in almost every aspect of planning of the wedding. He told OK! A:
Dennis Haysbert has been the spokesman for the Allstate Insurance Company since 2003. He is best known for his roles of President David Palmer on “24,” as well as Jonas Blane on “The Unit,” which aired from 2006-09 on CBS. Q:
Is it true that they are going to make a sequel to “Atonement”? I don’t see how that’s possible! -- Theresa W., via e-mail
A:
There are no plans for a sequel to the blockbuster 2007 romantic-drama, which was based on the Ian McEwan bestseller. However, Ian did reveal plans to turn the period piece into an opera, and is working on the operatic version with composer Michael Berkeley and poet Craig Raine. He says, “It’s not a chamber piece, that’s for sure.” Theater owners in the U.K., Germany and the U.S. are reportedly interested in staging the “Atonement” opera, and are eyeing a 2013 premiere. ***

Consider State Parks for Budget Vacation If fears about the economy have kept you and your family from taking summer vacations for the past few years, you’re not alone. But many families now are ready to take short, inexpensive vacations. Consider spending a few days or a week at a nearby state park. Many parks have cabins, lodge rooms or even yurts to rent for less than the price of motels. They might have signups for dates far in advance, but campsites are more available when booked early. Check Web sites for individual state parks, as not all state parks are alike. The Web sites will include information on the surrounding area and special park activities, such as bike/run events, volunteer day and certain amenities that might not be available each day due to maintenance. Check the amenities offered. Some parks are rural and rustic with few amenities. Some have swimming, hiking, water skiing and even golf. Those with lakes often have boat or fishing gear rentals. Many have historic displays in learning centers, and ranger-led programs such as wildlife photography and tracking. Look at Google satellite maps to get an idea of the park’s available space and layout. If there’s considerable open space, think about taking sports equipment, such as baseball gear, a croquet set or badminton net. Are there biking trails? Take bikes for everyone, or possibly rent them. Look to thrift shops if you don’t have these, or borrow from a neighbor. The same with tents and sleeping bags if you’ll be camping -- acquire them as inexpensively as you can. Call the park directly instead of making reservations online, especially if you want more deluxe accommodations such as a cabin or lodge room. (Most online reservation sites will charge you a fee to reserve through them.) If the accommodations for your chosen dates aren’t available, ask to be put on a wait list. Or ask for other accommodation suggestions. You may have to put down a deposit in advance. If you live near your state line, don’t forget to check the parks in your neighboring state. Find out whether your credit union or auto club has any special discount coupons for state parks, or ask the park. One of the best parts of vacationing at a state park: You’ll save on gas as you won’t have to drive long distances to reach your destination. Once you read the meter, you can estimate your electric bill based on the kilowatt/hour rates from your utility bill. (Yes, meter readers make mistakes!)
