It’s not just the home of the U.S. President; the White House has also been the site of diplomatic decisions, weddings, births and Easter egg hunts.

This week, Tidbits goes behind the scenes at the Executive Mansion.

• Because the First Continental Congress met in Philadelphia in 1774, that city was originally considered the first U.S. capital. Since several other cities were the meeting place for Congress over the next 26 years, they were all technically regarded as the capital city. These cities included Baltimore and Annapolis, Maryland, Lancaster and York, Pennsylvania, Princeton and Trenton, New Jersey and New York City.

While most meeting places were a court house, state house, or city hall, home to Congress in Trenton for seven weeks was the French Arms Tavern.

• The U.S. Constitution authorized a 100-squaremile plot of land for the seat of U.S. government.

Take a cowboy, a construction worker, a sailor, an Indian, a traffic cop and a biker, put them all together, and what do you have? The Village People, of course! Join Tidbits for a look at one of music’s most interesting combinations.

• As French composer and music producer Jacques Morali strolled the streets of New York City’s Greenwich Village, he happened on to Felipe Rose dancing in an American Indian costume.

Rose was of Puerto Rican and Lakota Sioux descent and worked part-time as a bartender, dancing to the customer’s tables with jungle bells on his boots as he served drinks.

• Morali then conceived the idea of a musical group uniquely made up of individuals from the Village’s wide variety of social groups, and began looking for possibilities.

Jacques Morali was inspired to write about it and composed the number in about 20 minutes.

Victor Willis came up with the words, and the horns, strings and driving beat were added. This 1978 tune has been performed as a group dance everywhere from dances in the school gym to wedding receptions to sporting events. The New York Yankees began using it as a middle-of-thefifth inning break in 1996. The Village People themselves led the crowd through the motions at the 2008 Major League Baseball All-Star game in Yankee Stadium.

A: Meadow Rose is an etched pattern, and

pieces were made in complete table settings.

Fostoria Glass Co. was located in Fostoria, Ohio, from 1887 to 1891, and then moved to Moundsville, W.Va. Each dessert plate would probably be worth $15 to $25.

The Case of the Exaggerated Ad Recently I got a letter from Todd Davis, CEO of LifeLock. I’d read in the news that the organization was going through some challenging times with the Federal Trade Commission, so I was eager to learn what he had to say.

First, let me remind you that I am a huge fan of LifeLock, a company that offers identity theft “insurance.” I do all I can to protect my identity, and then I carry LifeLock protection in case something happens. To me, it’s like auto insurance. I drive safely, but if I get whacked, I want to know that I’m covered and my insurance company will take care of the damage.

If my identity is stolen and my good name is put through the wringer, I know that LifeLock knows how to restore it and will spend up to a million bucks to get the job done. I like that.

Back to Todd’s letter, which, as it turns out, warmed my heart. I can identify with anyone who gets exuberant to the point of exaggeration and hyperbole.

In a nutshell, the FTC took Todd and LifeLock to task for misrepresenting and exaggerating the benefits and wonder of the service. You might remember seeing TV commercials in which Todd had his Social Security number painted on the side of a truck, which he drove through New York City. In a taunting kind of way, he challenged anyone to try to steal his identity. The claims were shocking: that even after broadcasting his identifying information, he was certain no one could steal his identity.

LifeLock went on to suggest that by putting fraud alerts on its customers’ credit files, it was locking out thieves. That claim caused a big stink, as well. Fraud alerts are OK, but they don’t prevent thievery. In a way, it’s like locking the door after the burglars have gone.

As it turns out, the FTC sued LifeLock for misleading the public and giving a false sense of

absolute confidence. And LifeLock lost, to the tune of something close to $35 million. Ouch! That’s some kind of slap on the wrist for going overboard with the advertising claims.

LifeLock has paid the fines, changed its advertising claims and made amends. The company is financially strong. And now Todd and his dedicated team can get back to the work of providing identity theft protection.

Have I lost confidence in LifeLock? Not at all.

I don’t depend on this company for prevention. I want it in my corner in case the worst happens, in the same way I count on my homeowners and auto insurance companies to be there if we have a fire or car accident.

A Tale of Two Adoptions “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.”

-- Charles Dickens, A Tale of Two Cities Adopting a new dog can feel a lot like that famous opening line. You’ve just come home with a new furry companion, in some cases plucked from the jaws of death. In all likelihood, he’s latched on to you as his new best friend, the person he loves more than any other in the world. It’s a great feeling. But there’s almost always more to the story.

Unless you live alone and prefer a solitary existence, your dog will have to get along with people other than you -- namely, your significant other, your children, neighbors, friends and extended family. If you plan to introduce him to the world beyond your home and yard, he’ll have to tolerate strangers, too.

The following two letters from readers tell the tale of two adoptions. I print them both here in the hopes that the writer of the first -- along with any readers experiencing the same -- will heed the inherent warning of the second.

The first reads as follows: “I just adopted ‘Red’ a week ago from a woman who rescued her from a shelter. She is showing signs of fear aggression: She has growled twice while we were walking, once at a person rolling a suitcase, and once at a person bent over gardening. She has also growled while in our yard at people she could hear talking next door in their yard and also at the occasional inanimate object.

“Red plays well at the dog park and with my children. She displays no signs of food or toy aggression.

“I work full time and am concerned that I don’t have the time to train her properly for aggression issues. The growling was not disclosed to me upon adoption. Your advice would be appreciated.”

This next letter could be right out of Dickens, with his stories of children forced to endure abuses at the hands of unfeeling or unthinking adults. It is what some might deem a “cautionary tale,” and it’s what might happen should the writer of the previous letter opt not to make time in her busy schedule to get immediate and thorough professional training for Red: “I have three children, ages 4, 2 and 1. We adopted ‘Ginger’ on Monday. Today is Sunday. So far: He mounted my 1-year-old and bit her ear while I was feeding her. He stole her bottle and growled at her when she took it back. He pinned my 4-year-old to the floor and ripped his pants.

Overuse of Antibiotics a Boon for ‘Supergerms’ “Superbugs” are not just for science fiction anymore.

In American communities, large and small, antibioticresistant bacteria are ravaging hospitals and killing thousands of patients every year. These “supergerms” are gradually replacing the typical antibiotic-sensitive bacteria in the hospital, making it more likely that this problem will become increasingly prevalent.

Sadly, the American health care system is largely responsible for this looming epidemic. Between physicians and pharmaceutical companies, new antibiotics are constantly incorporated into patient therapy. Because these more powerful and potent medications can attack a wider array of bacteria, there is a widespread destruction of sensitive organisms. But looming in the background are “superbugs,” which are resistant to the onslaught of new therapy. These tiny germs multiply in huge numbers, filling the void left by eradication of traditional hospital-based bacteria, and they ultimately become ever more sophisticated and difficult to kill.

The problem with the overuse of newer, more sophisticated antibiotics is not limited to treatment of hospitalized patients; rather it starts in the primary-care clinic with the treatment of minor bacterial or viral illnesses. Many physicians prescribe antibiotics for viral infections, and most frequently, they prefer the newest, most expensive therapy. These days, physicians prescribe Levaquin or Zithromycin (Z Pack) for a simple viral infection, bacterial sinusitis or bronchitis.

Not only are these drugs less effective in the treatment of minor bacterial infections, but also their use leads to the greater prevalence of resistant bacteria that can lead to life-threatening infections.

A similar situation applies to the treatment of urinary tract infections, where the tried and true medications should be used before the newer and more powerful antibiotics. In general, newer therapies should be kept in reserve for the less frequent infections that have become resistant to the older drugs.

Even worse than inappropriate care by physicians, patients are often responsible for the overuse of antibiotics. During the winter months, not a day goes by without a patient requesting an antibiotic for a cough, runny nose or sore throat. Physicians who try to convince their patients that antibiotics are not needed are almost always met with a great deal of skepticism.

In many cases, skepticism turns to outright aggression and a lengthy argument follows.

It’s easy to see why most physicians take the path of least resistance and give in to their patients’ request -- it is just not worth the trouble. And if something untoward happens (always a possibility in the uncertain world of medicine and illness), there is the threat of litigation.

If you become sick, try to determine if your illness is the result of a virus or bacteria. Only when a proven bacterial infection exists should an antibiotic be prescribed. Viruses are the most common causes of upper respiratory infections. Bacterial (usually strep) infections of the throat are quite rare -- more common in children -- and present with a high fever, severe sore throat, white spots at the back of the throat and enlarged painful nodes in the neck. Antibiotics should never be used for someone who has a runny nose or cough without a significant fever.

A secondary bacterial infection should be suspected if the runny nose persists for a prolonged period of time and mucus drainage becomes thick and yellow green in color. Bronchitis is frequently viral, but in the

Helping a Lonely Widower Find a Life Q:

Our mom died four years ago after a long, happy and satisfying life as a devoted wife and mother. Dad is 67 and living alone in the family home where we were raised. My brother and sisters realize he is not happy carr ying on without her. He puts on a good front, but we know he is quite lonely. He keeps himself basically homebound and makes no effort to make friends or to start a relationship with a new female companion. We would like to see him snap out of this isolation, but we're not sure of how to go about it. What do you suggest?

A:

Does he know he has your support if he were to find a new companion? Often, both fathers and adult children fail to communicate these thoughts because it’s an uncomfortable subject for both of them. It appears that he is depressed and finds his current lifestyle empty and unsatisfying.

His loneliness is absolutely certain to continue until changes are made. The TV, shallow as it is, can become a substitute for a friend but it is only a mindless way of passing time and filling a void.

Older single men who are living alone and without the companionship and love shared with a partner, can lose interest in their personal appearance. They do not exercise much, they begin to like themselves less and lose interest in socializing and interacting with others. Women are attracted by happy, positive, energetic and sensitive men who will provide the role of protective caretaker.

Let him know that it troubles you and your siblings to see him let his life go to waste this way. Assure him that you all agree that it is ok for him to take an interest in meeting single females who could provide companionship and fill the emptiness in his life.

You and your siblings could take turns having him to your homes for dinner to get him out of the house and involved with the family. Use the time for encouraging him to enroll in a class, get active in

church, or join a senior center and get involved in the many social events they offer. There are many, many clubs and organizations looking for volunteers and members to participate in worthwhile causes. It’s not possible to be involved this way without meeting people -- and available members of the opposite sex.

He may have fun attending a cooking school, joining a history book club or going on other outgoing diversions. Frequently, sports friend’s wives invite a single man as a fourth for dinner or cards. Blind dates can become partners. Mine did!

Remind dad that grief will be over when he chooses to make it so. Life is an adventure, and he shouldn’t be missing out on his share of happiness!

I am 62 years old and thinking of signing up for Social Security. I run my own business and am planning to turn it over to my wife. She is only 50 years old, so Social Security isn’t an issue for her yet. But I’d like to stay involved in my company. I understand I can pay myself up to $14,160 per year and still qualify for all my Social Security benefits. Is this right?

The easy answer to your question is that, yes, you can make up to $14,160 per year and still qualify for all of your Social Security benefits. But I think you’re going to learn that getting those benefits won’t be so easy. And that’s because you run your own business.

You’re going to have to jump over a few more hurdles to prove to the Social Security Administration that you will not be too involved in your company.

To explain why that’s an issue, I have to start with this basic Social Security premise: You must be retired to be eligible for retirement benefits. But over the years, lawmakers have liberalized that rule. First, by setting income thresholds (that’s the $14,160 limit mentioned above) that allow people to work part time and still be eligible for Social Security. Second, by changing the law to allow people over their “full retirement age” (currently age 66) to work, earn as much as they want and collect Social Security benefits at the same time.

Frankly, I wish they had extended that unlimited income policy to all Social Security beneficiaries.

Then we wouldn’t have the convoluted earnings penalty rules we have today, and I wouldn’t have to spend an entire column explaining why self-employed business owners under full retirement age might not qualify for Social Security.

But wishful thinking aside, let’s get back to the way things are, which forces the Social Security Administration to question your retirement status.

That’s essentially because you are in a position to control your earnings.

When a person who works for wages applies for Social Security benefits and says he or she is going to make less than $14,160 per year, it’s easy to verify that allegation. A quick check of pay stubs or a W-2 form provides all the evidence that’s needed to show the worker is earning less than the legal income threshold.

But it’s not so cut and dried for a self-employed business owner like you. You said you are turning the business over to your wife. If you are really doing that, that’s one thing. But if the transfer of the company to your wife is really just a paper transaction, while you continue to stay heavily involved in the day-to-day affairs of the business -- as experience shows is often the case -- then you will not be considered “retired” and will not be eligible for Social Security benefits.

Also, you said you would be paying yourself $14,160.

If you are legitimately reducing your involvement in the business to the point where you are actually performing services worth $14,160, that’s one thing.

But if you are paying yourself that amount of money simply to stay under the Social Security earnings limit while you continue to run and manage the business, then once again, you will not be considered “retired” and will not be eligible for Social Security benefits.

Here’s a true story that might help illustrate what I’m talking about: In the early part of my career with SSA, one of my jobs was to investigate business owners who were alleging retirement. One case involved a man who owned a furniture store. When he turned 62 and applied for Social Security, he told us that he was turning the business over to his son. I

Hope for an Alzheimer’s Cure New research has shown just how Alzheimer’s disease spreads, and from that could come a cure!

A study done at the University of Massachusetts took a close look at a protein in the human brain called Tau. It was always thought that this Tau protein was a by-product of cells that had died due to Alzheimer’s. Not necessarily so, say the researchers.

What made them wonder was that Tau cells were found in spinal fluid of Alzheimer’s patients.

How did they get there? It turns out there are two ways for Tau cells to migrate. One is that those cells are secreted in a pattern -- and therein lies a potential cure. Follow the pattern, interrupt the movement of those toxic cells and stop the spread of the disease to different parts of the brain.

So hopeful are these researchers that they’ve taken out a patent on using this new information to diagnose Alzheimer’s at a much earlier stage, when a cure is more likely.

Food Safety It’s bad enough that our food costs so much at the grocery store. When food spoils because it wasn’t used in time, we end up wasting money.

Here are some things you can do: If you have a pantry, post a list on the inside of the door showing the contents and date purchased of the bulk items you buy. Keep track of the expiration dates.

You can do the same with your freezer, especially if you divide bulk meat purchases. Label each package with the date you bought it, and the use-by date. For example, frozen hamburger will last 3-4 months in the freezer if it’s wrapped correctly.

The dates on food can be confusing. “Use by,” “sell by” and “best if used by” aren’t the same. The U.S. Department of Agriculture has a comprehensive site (usda.gov) with information that will clear up “use by” dates and labeling confusion. On the site, put “Basics for Handling Food Safely” in the search box.

When in doubt, you can call the USDA Meat and Poultry hotline at 1-888-674-6854 for questions on the safe storage and handling of meat, poultry and egg products. This can be crucial if you’ve had a power outage and aren’t sure if the food in your refrigerator or freezer is still good.

Food recalls can be a serious problem -- when we don’t hear about them. The Food and Drug Administration doesn’t issue a recall, but they do post notices and safety alerts. Recently, a common ingredient used in many foods was found to contain salmonella. The FDA was required to leave it up to the manufacturers to get the word out. In many cases, the news media didn’t pick up the stories.

You can protect yourself and your family by keeping track of food recalls and alerts via the FDA site at www.fda.gov. It has up-to-the-minute news in the Public Health Focus and News & Events section on the front screen.

Food Safety (www.foodsafety.gov) has a list of recalls and alerts, as well as a way to subscribe to news feeds. You’ll still need to visit the site, but the newest information will be available for you. The site also includes comprehensive information on food poisoning, as well as a place to report it.

The number one request I get from students is email: valleybits@msn.com “how can I hit the ball further?” After I watch them hit a few times, I soon see their problem; they hit the ball flat footed with no hip rotation.

The strongest muscles in the human body are all underneath you; glutes, hamstrings and quads.

The average golfer doesn’t use these muscles in the swing; they use only the upper body to create power. To create leverage in the swing you want to push off from the ground, which will help the hip release forward creating more power.

The key to the forward swing is to go from the ground up and NOT from the top down.

Start with the right foot pushing off, which rotates the hip through impact. It is important to note here that the right hip rotates up in the forward swing and not down. Too often, I see golfers drop the right hip down into impact, which slows the rotation. You want the hip to stay high going through impact so it can continue to accelerate all the way to the finish.

If you want to create more power in your swing, work on using your legs to create more leverage by supporting the hip rotation up through the ball.
