HIP-HOP KANGAROOS by Kathleen Lakeland

Kangaroos have a profound effect on the food industry in Australia. Yes, they’re a source of meat, but they’re also a source of frustration when they horn in on farmers’ grazing land. To Stop by for a the rest of the world, however, kangaroos are RTIFICATE unusual, mysterious, and, well, CE cute! (MOM WILL U LOVE • Why are kangaroos found only inYOAustralia? Continental drift theorists say that at one time, ‘roos congregated on one part of a larger land mass called Pangaea. When a chunk broke off and became the continent of Australia, the kangaroos were stranded. Unable to swim long distances (or fly), they were unable to leave Australia. As a result, kangaroos are unique to the continent. • Four species of kangaroo are the most common and best-known: The Red Kangaroo is the largest (up to seven feet tall) and is native to Australia’s desert areas. The habitats of the Eastern Grey and Western Grey Kangaroo should be obvious. The Antilopine is the friendliest ‘roo, and the ones that are easiest to distinguish between males (which are reddish) and females (which are gray). Antilopines spend their time in the northernmost part of the continent. HIP-HOP KANGAROOS: page 3 turn the pageTurn fortomore!

• It was American author, humorist and storyteller Garrison Keillor who made the following observation: “They say such nice things about people at their funerals, that it makes me sad to realize I’m going to miss mine by just a few days.” • According to a recent poll of pet owners, the most popular name in the United States for male dogs is Max; for female dogs, it’s Maggie. • The murre, a bird found in the Arctic, actually dives into the water and swims to catch the small fish that comprise its diet. Interestingly, its eggs aren’t like those of any other bird in the world: The egg “whites” are blue, and the yolks are bright-red. • Statistics show that only 1 in every 1,461 people is born on Feb. 29, the date that occurs only once every four years, in a leap year. • You might be surprised to learn that the kilt originated not in Scotland, but in France. • Did you know that Dalton, Ga., is the Carpet Capital of the World? I didn’t think so. You no doubt were also unaware that Martinsville, Va., is the Sweat Shirt Capital of the World, and that Central City, Neb., is the Pump Irrigation Capital of the World. • Those who study such things claim that leeches have 32 brains. • The next time you get jury duty when you’d rather be doing other things, remember that the situation could be worse. ture. Abe lost the 1832 election, a pattern that would repeat later in his career. He’d go on to lose his first run at the state legislature, his first try at the U.S. House of Representatives, and his first legitimate shot at being nomiTidbits of Coachella Valley nated for president. But he never gave up. • A secondLINCOLN run for the(from statepage legislature in 1834 ABRAHAM 2) proved successful, and Lincoln was reelected three times. Abe was admitted to the bar, and opened a law partnership in Springfield, the state capital. He courted Mary Todd (ten years his junior) and married her in in 1842. • Lincoln won election to the U.S. House in 1846. To honor Whig tradition, he left office after a single term, and returned to his law practice. When Lincoln’s efforts helped Zachary Taylor win the White House, the president offered him the governorship of the Oregon Territory. Abe refused the job, however, since it would distance him from his Illinois constituents. Instead, he focused his efforts on the 1858 Senate race. A series of high-profile debates with Democrat Stephen Douglas greatly increased Lincoln’s popularity, but didn’t win him the election. • Again, he refused to submit. When the Republicans nominated Lincoln for president in 1860, he found himself competing against a familiar face: Stephen Douglas. This time, Lincoln emerged victorious. Although his election precipitated the Civil War, the United States emerged wiser from the struggle. Abe made tough decisions during the War, doing what he felt necessary to preserve the Union. Only days after the War ended and Lincoln began his second term as president, he fell victim to a cowardly assassin’s bullet. NEXT WEEK: CHESTER ALAN ARTHUR

Earn Last-Minute Holiday Cash It’s not too late to make some extra cash for the holidays. You might find opportunities in surprising places. Call home decorators to see if they need help. These are the magicians who can transform a home into a winter wonderland, and often they are overscheduled and need little elves to hang the ornaments and mistletoe. If they’re decorating the outside of the house too, ask if the leaves need to be raked. If you’re skilled yourself, call model homes or large businesses with lobbies and ask about decorating. Call housecleaning services. They’re likely to have extra work as people want homes cleaned in advance of relatives coming. Call temp agencies. Not only are their regulars likely to take a few weeks off over the holidays, but companies need even more people as employees take off as well. Even rudimentary filing or phone skills could land you a temporary position. (If they like you, it might also lead to a permanent job.) Call caterers and ask if they’re overwhelmed with business. Ask about a delivery position or offer to provide preparation-intensive foods like veggie trays. Caterers often need people to run lastminute errands too, or help serve at large company parties. (You’ll likely need a white shirt and black pants for that.) Call all the stores in the local mall. If you catch a manager at the right time (overloaded with holiday shoppers and two employees who called in sick), you could snag a position. Ask local mall management if you can set up a table with holiday baked goods, even if it’s on the sidewalk outside a door. You’ll make more money if you offer hot drinks like cocoa or cider. If there is a rehab center, elderly facility or nursing home near you, ask management about acting as a personal shopper for patients who can’t get out. Set realistic fees. Put up signs offering to baby-sit children whose parents need to shop alone, probably at night. If you have baking skills and are due to go to a meeting of any kind, take samples of baked goods that you can provide. Know in advance what you’d charge and be ready to take orders immediately. Get part of your fee in advance. David Uffington regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible. HEAR ? OH SAY, CAN YOU HEAR? by Paige Lozier

During World War II, it became a tradition to sing “The Star-Spangled Banner” before major American sporting events. As you might imagine, fans have been treated to some rather interesting interpretations of our National Anthem in the 60-plus years since. • Whatever else singer/actor Robert Goulet accomplished in his life, he will forever be remembered as the man who forgot the words to the National Anthem. Goulet was born in the United States, but moved to Canada with his family when he was 14 years old. In 1965, Goulet was asked to sing “The Star-Spangled Banner” prior to the Muhammad Ali-Sonny Liston heavyweight championship fight. He got off to a bad start by singing “Oh say, can you see, by the dawn's early night…” He mangled a few more lyrics before he was done, and made next-morning headlines across the country as a result. • Veteran rock band Aerosmith was tapped to perform the National Anthem just before the Indy 500 on Memorial Day 2001. But lead singer Steven Tyler landed in hot water with the press after he changed the final line of the song from “the home of the brave” to “the home of the Indianapolis 500.” • Jose Feliciano strummed his guitar at Tiger Stadium prior to Game 5 of the 1968 World Series, and went on to perform an unconventional, bluesy version of “The Star-Spangled Banner.” It was perhaps the first time such a non-traditional version of the song had been performed on a national stage, and the reaction from Middle America was one of outrage. Feliciano later stated that he’d intended his soulful rendition of the song as a “thank you” to the country that had given a blind Puerto Rican a chance. Instead, millions of Americans took his “tribute” as an insult.

• The backlash was great after the San Diego Padres invited Roseanne Barr to sing the National Anthem before a home game on July 25, 1990. Roseanne and then-hubby Tom Arnold were flown by helicopter to the stadium. She intended to “have fun” singing the Anthem, and a surprisingly-lucid Tom suggested that she reconsider: “There are a lot of 4thout Quarter people there2008 and they probably take the NationalWeek Anthem 49 very seriously.” Barr went ahead with her off-key, screeching version of Nov 30 – Dec 6 “The Star Spangled Banner,” which she Page capped off by 7grabbing her crotch and spitting (to mimic the actions of the players). • Olympic track gold medalist Carl Lewis could carry a baton, but had a bit more difficulty carrying a tune. Lewis sang the National Anthem before a sellout crowd at a Chicago Bulls–New Jersey Nets game in 1993. His voice cracked, croaked and crumbled during the “rockets’ red glare” portion. Lewis paused and uttered “uh-oh” before soldiering on. He then ad-libbed to the crowd “I’ll make up for it now” prior to attempting the high progression in “land of the free.” Proof created by: SIMON - MASTERCRAFT KITCHENS • JOHN Michael Bolton hit all the right notes when 11-2-2008 4/C he sang 1/16 the National Anthem prior to Game 4 Proof created Property of by: of the 2003 World Series, but a memory Phone: 320.0997 Fax: 320.1630 lapse caused valleybits@msn.com him eternal embarrassment. Are Sleeping Pills Worse Than Insomnia?

Price and Quality

ANSWER: Many studies have shown conclusively that breastfeeding lowers the risk for breast cancer. For every 12 months a woman has breastfed, her chances of breast cancer drop by 4.3 percent. One explanation is that breastfeeding delays ovulation and the production of estrogen. ***

Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

SENIOR NEWS LINE by Matilda Charles © King Features Synd., Inc.

Take Care When Shopping The holidays are such happy times, but unfortunately, we seniors need to be aware of the potential pitfalls as we go about our holiday shopping.  Be cautious in mall crowds. Only take the credit cards and cash you’ll need, and carry those in a front pants pocket, with your car keys in the other. (There’s something to be said for wearing jeans when shopping.) Go in a group, if you can. If your time or energy is limited, consider giving the same type of gift to everyone. Calendars, especially chosen for each individual, are always welcome. The same goes for gift cards. (Ask to make sure there is no expiration date or fees on the cards.)  Beware shopping online. Use the Internet for price comparison, but only shop online if you absolutely must. Stick to the Web sites of “brick and mortar” stores you’re already familiar with. Look for a Contact Us link on the site, and see if there is a phone number where you can place the order instead of entering your credit-card number over the Internet. Beware especially of online auctions. If you’re not experienced with them, the holidays are not the time to learn. *** If you can, do something for the needy this year. Charities are going to be stretched beyond their abilities to take care of all the families who ask for help. Think of the children especially. Every year I hunt for and buy one of those large metal dump trucks, painted bright yellow, and donate it to one of the local service groups who are gathering new toys for underprivileged children. I like to think that a little boy will be happy to find it under the tree from Santa.

ANSWER: All sleeping pills should be taken for as short a time as possible. “As short a time as possible” implies that the person recovers from whatever it is that’s preventing him or her from falling asleep. In the real world, a correctible cause for insomnia often isn’t found, and then a person is faced with having to stay on a sleeping pill or stay awake for most of the night. I would choose option one, as long as the sleeping pill isn’t causing any trouble, like daytime sleepiness. From time to time, it’s in your interest to try and stop the pill. You might find that sleep isn’t as elusive as it was when you started taking it. Lunesta is one of the newer sleeping pills, tolerated well by most. It starts to work in 10 minutes, so it’s useful for those who find falling asleep difficult, and it has extended action to prevent waking in the veryearly-morning hours. Lunesta has caused some users to behave differently. A normally reserved person might become quite aggressive. It also has caused a very few to do things they have no recollection of doing. A very small number of people have driven a car under the influence of Lunesta and have not realized that they did it. If a person has such experiences, then immediately stopping the pill is common sense. Have you tried nondrug approaches to falling asleep? Go to bed and wake up at approximately the same time every day. Relax before bedtime. If you don’t fall asleep within 20 minutes of lying down, get up and read or listen to music. Keep daytime naps to 20 minutes or less. Don’t use caffeine within six hours of bedtime. You can become dependent on Lunesta, as you can on most sleeping pills. Dependence means it’s hard to stop the medicine. Gradually tapering the dose FINAL CORRECTIONS DUE BY 5:00 P.M. can usually allow people to break any dependence. I MONDAY, SEPT. 29 believe that sleeplessness is worse than the prospect dependence. Readofcarefully for accuracy and spelling Fibromyalgia is a common cause of insomnia. Toodle’s condo isn’t a prison or a punishment, but he doesn’t get a say in when and whether to retire. Other changes this couple could easily and immediately implement to curb Toodle’s problem behaviors: -- When home, use a baby gate to confine Toodle in an area of the house where he can be seen and quickly reached to correct problem behaviors -- i.e., using a shake can or squirt bottle to startle him out of a barking spell -- rather than yelling “shut up,” which translates to “bark louder” in Toodle’s world. -- When not home, leave Toodle in a comfortable crate with good visibility or confine him to a small area of the house. This is a necessary element of training and will help to establish an appropriate hierarchy and keep him safe. Basic dog training could transform this household. And it sure beats saying toodle-oo to the marriage. But I’ll leave that bit to Dr. Phil. Woof!

It is my Empowered Golf strategy to have the strongest muscles in the body, the legs, be the power source in the golf swing. I believe it is key to trigger the swing by having the legs starting tall at address, and then flexing the knees, or loading them downward, to begin the backswing, as shown in the photo. Next is to get the club moving along the correct path back and away from the ball. Since the golf club is the directional source in the swing, the arms/shoulders will guide the club straight back from the ball as the legs are loading to create the power. Show Off Antique Pieces Even With Small Children in the Home Q: My great-aunt wants to give me some

of her good antiques, pieces she has mostly collected in Europe. I’ve always been in awe of her home and its beautiful items. But we have three children, all under 10, plus a dog and cat. Would it be awful to accept a few pieces and keep them in storage until the children are older?

Q:

OK, what’s the straight skinny on how to buy good sheets? I’m getting married in two months and am baffled by all the talk about things like “thread counts.”

A:

Frankly, I was also confused until I had lunch with Fabrizio Biasiolo, vice president of the century-old Italian maker of luxe custom linens, Casa del Bianco. A former executive with Frette, another famous name in Italian linens, Fabrizio knows sheets like the back of his hand -- which is how he advises you to test for softness when you are buying your sheets. “The whole idea of thread count has become

overblown ... it’s not true that the higher the number of threads, the better,” Biasiolo says. What is most important is the softness you feel with the back of your hand. “Sheets have to be light in weight and ‘breathe’ to be comfortable,” he points out. What’s ideal -- and what’s on the beds of most luxury hotels -- are sheets made of 100 percent Egyptian cotton, 200 threat count in a percale construction (as opposed to a sateen construction, which he says is heavier and more expensive). “There are plenty of people sleeping on 1,000thread-count sheets unaware that they are really sleeping on tablecloths!” adds Biasiolo. Worse than awful! It would be a great waste and a missed opportunity to teach your children about history and the joys of living with beautiful things. I’m quoting Mary Helen McCoy, Charleston, S.C., decorator and antiques dealer (www. maryhelenmccoy.com), who firmly believes that antiques fit right into today’s lifestyle. “Some of these things are 200 years old or more,” she points out. “They have already survived wars, floods and lots of children.” The dealer urges parents to take children to see the antiques in museums. “You can teach history through furniture,” McCoy believes. Make children appreciate the value of beautiful old things.

Practicing what she teaches, Mary Helen McCoy, an antiques dealer, graces her own small TV room with treasures from the 18th and 19th centuries.

McCoy, who is one of only 15 U.S. members of the prestigious Syndicat National des Antiquaires, has filled her own Charleston home with antiques that are actually older than the house itself. It was built in the 1950s, and some of her furniture dates to the early 1700s. But the antique items coexist comfortably with 21st-century amenities, such as the TV concealed in the 1770 French armoire from Bresse.
