I am thrilled that so many of my favorite shows from the 1970s and ‘80s are beginning to show up on DVD. Can you tell me when “Falcon Crest” will be out on DVD. I can’t wait! -- Janet U. in Florida
A:
Wait no longer. “Falcon Crest: Season 1” is now out on DVD, and can be found wherever DVDs are sold and rented. I also can’t wait to re-live those Tuscany Valley memories, with Angela’s scheming, Lance’s ladykilling and Maggie’s voice of reason. It is especially fun to see Susan Sullivan’s portrayal of Maggie back Susan Sullivan then compared with her hilarious Martha Rodgers (Castle’s mom) on “Castle.” ***

Scores of loyal Taylor Hicks fans (and Celebrity Extra readers) correctly answered this question: What songs did Taylor sing in the “American Idol” finale, which ultimately crowned him the winner? (The songs were “Living for the City,” “Levon” and “Do I Make You Proud?”). Winners in the drawing were: Tammy Krebs of Groton, Conn.; Amy Hicks (no relation to Taylor!) of Theresa, N.Y.; Dorothy Mayes of Roanoke, Va.; Nicholas Russo of Norwell, Mass.; and Nancy McConnell of Stansbury Park, Utah. Along with his “Parks and Rec” duties, Rob Lowe will guest star in the fourth season of the Showtime series “Californication.” Rob will play Eddie Nero, a neurotic yet talented movie star who is in the running to play Hank Moody (David Duchovny) in the film version of Hank’s hit novel. A:
Helen Wagner, 91, who passed away May 1, was a soap opera icon. She even held the Guinness world record for playing the same character on TV for the longest period of time. Ease Your Mind With These Surprising Travel Tips Everyday CHEAPSKATE
This week I have a couple of® pre-emptive tips for those of you who will be traveling this summer. Mary Hunt The first is forbythose who will be traveling abroad, and the second is for travelers who plan to pay bills early before they leave town for extended periods of time. Tip 1: Here’s what international travelers need to know before they take off this summer: American Express, MasterCard and Visa charge your bank (usually 1 percent) to convert dollars to the local currency when you travel. The bank that issues your card also charges a fee for each transaction (typically 2 percent). This international transaction fee is added to any purchase, whether it be a $3 piece of pizza or a $5,000 piece of art. You can avoid this fee by comparing credit cards and choosing the right card before you leave. An additional 3 percent, on top of all your other travel costs, is going to make your vacation even more expensive. Capital One is currently the only major issuer that does not charge a foreign transaction fee. In fact, the bank also eats the 1 percent charge from Visa and MasterCard. That means that if you were to make a $500 purchase abroad with a Capital One card, you would save up to $15. Tip 2: There are two common reasons that homeowners send extra money to their mortgage companies: --To pay down the principal. When you pay down the principal, your loan balance goes down, but you still have to make the next scheduled payment. Let’s say you make your regular mortgage payment in May, plus three extra payments. You enclose a note that the additional payments are to pay down the principal balance. You still will have payments due in June, July and August, as scheduled. --To pay the account ahead. On the other hand, let’s assume that you send those three extra payments because you are going to Europe for the summer and you want to pay all of your bills

The idea of Go Figure! is to arrive at the figures given at the bottom and right-hand columns of the diagram by following the arithmetic signs in the order they are given (that is, from left to right and top to bottom). Use only the numbers below the diagram to complete its blank squares and use each of the nine numbers only once.
in advance before you leave so you won’t have to think about it. In this scenario, you want to “pay ahead.” You’ll be back before the September payment is due. If you are not clear on how you want the extra funds handled, the lender might assume you want to pay down the principal balance. You head off on your trip assuming you’ve made your mortgage payments. You don’t get the late notices because you’re not at home. You arrive home, only to learn that your house is in foreclosure for failure to pay. You cannot assume the mortgage company will pay your account ahead automatically if you do not send clear instructions. When you make prepayments on your mortgage, always enclose clear instructions. Then follow up with a phone call in a week or two to make sure those instructions were understood and followed. Happy travels!

TMI (too much information) gets a lot of press, too. But unfortunately, its cousin TLI (too little information) gets far too little. As the number of dog owners steadily rises, so does the number of people deciding to scrap it all and “do what they love.” What do they love? Dogs! What do they want to do? Train dogs! What qualifies them? Nothing! Why should you care? You shouldn’t! ... Until you have a real problem with your pup and need it solved. TLI on the part of your trainer can be a VBT (very bad thing). The advent of televised dog training, which uses the magic of editing to make cajoling the most unruly of beasts into blissful submission look as easy as eggs on toast, has helped push the number of people calling themselves dog trainers through the roof. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, that number has tripled since the year 2000, making dog training among the most popular second-career choices, along with winemaking and sportscasting. So what’s the problem? After all, we’re just talking about a little Emily Post for pups, right? NOMW (not on my watch). As dog behavior expert Brian Kilcommons put it when interviewed by The New York Times for a recent article on the onslaught of dog trainers: “This 1 45 are making life and death is a profession where you calls. The dog who isn’t euthanized and needs to be could hurt a person. On the other hand, a dog that has solvable problems but proves beyond the skill set of a trainer might end up in a shelter.” By the time they call me, most people living with canine behavioral problems have let those problems go on too long. Which means they’re bigger and more difficult to solve. Not unsolvable, but more deeply ingrained, more complicated, and perhaps with more side effects. In other words, the problem is now over the head of someone who hung their dog-trainer shingle based on having “grown up with dogs.” An abbreviated text message is one thing; an abbreviated education in your field of expertise is quite another. Recently, I received an e-mail from someone citing “37 years experience working with Labs, including basic and intermediate obedience training.” This CASEY’S CORNER: Turn to page 10 HRS:

Dear Doug
Creators News Syndicate
When a Job Goes Q: Our daughter called us last week. She and
her husband are having a hard time financially, and she wants to move back home with our 1-year-old granddaughter while her husband seeks a job in another state! We know getting a job is difficult, but we do not know how long it will take for him to secure one. A major question is how long should we be responsible for caretaking? We love our family, but how will this financially and emotionally affect us? Are we up to it? Can we take the added pressure? Our daughter works part time, so babysitting is part of this picture. Do you have some suggestions that could be helpful?

Your first question is about the facility’s admission requirements. Is the staff friendly and kind to the patients and do they know their names? Are single rooms affordable? On weekends and holidays, are medical staff members on duty? Does the facility allow the family 24-hour access to their relative? Are there physical therapy facilities on site? Is a physical therapy program available and regularly scheduled for those who require it? Other good questions worth checking: Is a registered nurse available 24/7? Does the facility have a relationship with a nearby hospital? After your parents become patients, remember unannounced visits will keep the staff more alert.

Use Local Help to Fix Social Security Problem Q:
I am having a big problem with my Social Security payments. I want to go to Social Security’s main office to deal with this. I don’t mean any local or statewide main office. I want to go all the way to the top! Can you please tell me where that is located?

You should apply for Medicare’s Part A coverage a couple months before your 65th birthday. Part A, which provides coverage for in-patient hospital expenses, is free. You actually paid for it with the Medicare taxes deducted from your paycheck. But it’s free to you once you reach age 65. So because it doesn’t cost you a nickel, you might as well apply for it. And you may learn anyway that your employer’s insurance wants you to take Part A to supplement their coverage. However, because you’re working and covered by your employer’s insurance, you don’t need Medicare’s Part B coverage. (Part B, which costs about $110 per month, covers doctor’s visits, lab work, etc.) You can delay applying for Part B -- avoid the costly monthly premiums until you retire and lose your employer’s regular coverage. Sure, I can tell you how to find Social Security’s headquarters. But then I’m going to tell you to not bother making the trip. The Social Security Administration’s main office is in Baltimore. The actual address is 6401 Security Blvd., Baltimore, MD, 21235. But why in the world would you want to go there to resolve your Social Security problems? If you had a washing machine from Sears and it was acting up, would you go to the Sears corporate headquarters to get it fixed? I don’t think so. You’d want to deal with some local repairperson. The same should be true for your Social Security issue. I don’t mean a Sears technician will be able to fix your Social Security problem! But someone at your local Social Security office is much better equipped to help you than a bureaucrat at SSA headquarters. And I should know, because I used to be one of those guys. I spent about half of my 32-year career with SSA working at their main offices in Baltimore. That place is filled with about 10,000 mostly hardworking dedicated professionals. But unlike your local Social Security field office personnel -- each having a broad general knowledge of the entire Social Security program -- most of the Social Security employees in Baltimore are specialists with a very narrow focus on only one small aspect of Social Security. Here’s an example. When I first transferred to Baltimore, I remember taking a stroll through the elaborate maze of offices and cubicles that make up just one of many buildings on the headquarters’ campus. And I saw a sign hanging over one set of cubicles that said “1719B Section.” The 1719B was just one of several hundred forms we used every day in a local Social Security office. I counted about 10 cubicles in this section, and I remember thinking, “Wow, there are 10 people who do nothing but maintain this one form.” (I later learned they were legal experts on provisions of Social Security law related to that form, computer programmers, support staff, etc.) But that’s when it dawned on me just how specialized most of the headquarters’ employees were. And here is another quick story to convince you not to go to SSA’s main office to resolve your problem. During my tenure in Baltimore, I learned that many people did just that: They traveled from around the country to visit Social Security’s headquarters in hopes of getting their problem resolved by someone in authority. Each of these visitors (there were dozens every day) was shepherded to an office in the main administrative building. And there he or she was helped by an outstationed representative from one of the local Baltimore-area Social Security field offices! So, if you’ve had some hassles trying to get your problem resolved at your local Social Security office, ask to speak to a supervisor or manager instead of planning a trip to Baltimore.
working and covered by my employer’s insurance. I plan to continue working as long as I am healthy. I understand I don’t need to apply for Medicare at 65. Is this right? Also, how many months before my 66th birthday, which will be in September 2011, should I apply for Social Security? Even though I’m working, I understand I’ll be eligible for benefits at age 66.

Maintaining Weight: a Problem for Some Seniors For many people, seniors included, weight control is a very important health issue. For most, this means keeping weight down and not gaining excess pounds. But there’s a certain senior group that has a hard time keeping weight on. They eat a few bites and they’re full. Or maybe they eat the wrong foods and then have no energy. Or they have little appetite. For those who have trouble gaining or keeping on weight, there are two keys to adding pounds: Eat calorie and nutrient-dense foods. These are foods that have more calories and nutrition per bite. Think of it this way: Which has the most calories and nutritional value, a cup of shredded lettuce or a cup of sliced bananas? The lettuce is mostly water with very little nutritional value. The banana has more calories and nutrients. Now compare a cup of cucumbers to a cup of raisins. Again, the cucumbers are mostly water, while the raisins have more of what the body needs. Also, if you fill up on a soft drink, you can take in hundreds of calories, but there’s no nutritional value. Other calorie-dense foods that will give more nutrition per bite include peanut or almond butter, beans and rice together, and fruit. Exercise. Muscles weigh more than fat, and building muscle requires exercise. That doesn’t necessarily mean signing up for a gym membership. Gaining muscle (healthy weight) can sometimes be as easy as daily walking and using small hand weights or resistance bands. Exercise also raises the metabolism, which can increase your appetite so you’ll want to eat a little more. If your weight is low, ask your doctor if you should talk to a nutritionist to work out a calorie- and nutrientdense diet that will help you gain a few pounds, but in a healthy way. Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into her column whenever possible. Write to her in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send e-mail to columnreply@gmail.com.

to lie down. Stress, overexertion, sleep deprivation and hunger can provoke a migraine. Some foods and drinks can do the same. Alcohol (especially red wine); caffeine; pickles; bananas; yogurt; avocados; aged cheeses; pickled or marinated chicken, beef or fish; salami; pastrami; bacon; pepperoni; hot dogs; and the taste enhancer monosodium glutamate are on the list of possible migraine inducers. Medicines for treating a migraine abound. Tylenol, aspirin and drugs like ibuprofen take care of mild migraines. For more severe ones, triptans are the standard treatment. They include Imitrex, Axert, Frova, Zomig, Amerge and Maxalt. An older medicine, ergotamine, still has a place in treatment For migraine prevention, propranolol, verapamil and amitriptyline are prescribed if the headaches occur often and disrupt life. were the Heart of Victorian Parlors Q:
Please take a look at the pictured antique pump organ that has been in our family for over 75 years. Originally belonging to our grandparents, it’s in excellent condition and still plays really well. We would like to sell it and hope you can give us an estimated price.
A:
Judging from your photo, your oak pump organ was made in the late Victorian era. Those were the days when nearly every family wanted an organ in their parlor. They would gather together to play the organ and sing. There is currently not the same demand as there was in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Plus, pump organs can be difficult to sell because they are so heavy and difficult to move. Similar pump organs have recently sold in the range of $300 to $500.

Q: This signature is on the bottom of a vase
that I inherited from my mother. It was bought in the early 1900s and is decorated with embossed maroon leaves against frosted glass. With a height of 12 inches, it also has the words “Made in France” on the bottom. Can you tell me anything about my vase and its value?
A:
You have an example of cameo glass made by Auguste Legras. He established his glasshouse in St. Denis, France, in 1864. Cameo glass, also called cased glass, is made of several different layers of glass. Designs were cut away from the outer layer. Your vase is circa 1900 and would probably be worth $400 to $600. Auguste Legras in France made cameo glass vases.
Q:
I recently bought a commemorative whiskey decanter from an elderly lady in my neighborhood. It is in the image of a Native American, stands 16 inches tall and is decorated with a caramel-colored glaze. It is marked “Limited Edition 1968 -- Genuine Heritage China -- Ezra Brooks -- Real Sippin Whiskey.” I paid $50, and my friend thinks I paid too much.

Prices aHours Investigate number of types of policies before you buy. Call your own dentist office to see what plans it accepts. Be sure the insurance company you’re considering has your dentist on its list. If you know you need work done, ask your dentist for a list and compare it to what the insurance will cover for each procedure. Consider the type of policy you want: Traditional -- You pay a monthly premium and have a percentage of your costs covered. Direct Reimbursement -- You pick any dentist and pay for the work, and the insurance company sends you a check. In-Network -- You’re required to go to a dentist on the plan’s list, but you might not be charged extra fees because the policy dictates which dentist you see and how much the dentist can charge. Consider the level of coverage the plan offers: Basic: Extractions, which might or might not cover root canals. Major: Implants and bridges likely won’t be covered unless specified in the policy. Preventive: Exams and cleaning are standard, but extra services such as fluoride might not be covered. Read the fine print: Policies don’t always agree on what is basic or major work. If you have a missing tooth and want to consider getting a bridge, it’s possible the plan won’t cover it because the tooth wasn’t in place when the policy started. Is there a waiting period? Is it for all procedures, or just the more expensive ones such as crowns? Is there a yearly maximum? Most companies cut off benefits at $1,000 per year. Existing conditions? Chances are the policy won’t cover those. Are emergencies covered? Be sure to do the math. Every year the deductible will reset. Add up your monthly premiums plus

DOLLARS & SENSE: From page 14 the deductible. That’s the amount you’ll pay on a yearly basis. If you don’t have a dentist, check the policy information for dentists in your area. Then call to find out which offices are taking new patients. Ask to be sure they’re still accepting that insurance, as not all of them will take a new patient. Find more information on the American Dental Association’s website: www.ada.org. Put “dental insurance” in the search box. Higher trajectory: If you want your shot to have a little higher trajectory take your normal stance, set up to the ball and turn your head, looking up in the sky to the point where you want your ball to go. Hold that position, turning your head back to the ball. As you turn to look high in the sky, a few things will happen. Your right shoulder will lower a little bit, your swing path will be a little more shallow, and some of your weight will shift to your right side. All of this will promote a more lofted shot. Lower trajectory: Set up to the ball with your normal address. Turn your head to view your intended ball flight, making sure you don’t look above your intended line. By keeping your head low your shoulders will remain level and your weight will remain evenly distributed. This promotes a steeper swing, which causes a delofted club face at impact. The result is lower trajectory. Tina Mickelson PGA
