Once at its peak in the 1950s, the sardine industry has declined considerably in recent years. After 135 years of operation, the last remaining large

It was prolific British author G.K. Chesterton who gave the following sage bit of advice: “Don’t ever take a fence down until you know the reason it was put up.” When Richard Nixon first ran for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives (which he won in 1946), he funded his campaign largely with money he won playing poker while serving as a lieutenant commander in the Navy during World War II. From 1863 until 1945, the city of Vicksburg, Miss., didn’t celebrate the Fourth of July holiday. This is because during the Civil War, the Confederate city was surrendered to Union forces on that day, an event that was considered to be one of the turning points of the war. It was once thought that when snakes went through their version of hibernation they rejuvenated themselves, and therefore that serpents lived forever.
October of 1954, a teenage Elvis Presley made his one and only Opry performance in front of a dubious and unimpressed audience. There’s talk everywhere these days about the growing problem posed by the fact that people in the U.S. are becoming more and more overweight. Interestingly, when the International Journal of Obesity was first published, in 1993, it was 509 pages long; the 2006 edition totaled 2,322 pages. Coincidence? It was one Dr. Spencer Silver, a chemist, who invented the adhesive used today in Post-it notes, but he had no luck promoting his invention. Six years later, one of his colleagues, Art Fry, came up with a use for it that stuck (so to speak). While sitting in church one day, Fry’s attention wandered from the sermon to the scraps of paper he used to mark his place in the hymnal, which kept falling out. Connecting his annoying problem and his friend’s invention, the Post-it was born. *** Thought for the Day: “Human salvation lies in the hands of the creatively maladjusted.” -- Martin Luther King Jr.

ICE SCULPTURES Often displayed for special occasions at fancy restaurants, weddings and other social events, ice sculptures are fascinating works of art to behold. Artists use chainsaws, chisels, blowtorches and other tools to impress us with their unique skills. Some artists create frozen masterpieces on a grand scale in frigid locations worldwide. • The annual International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival is held in Harbin, Heilongjiang Province, China. Harbin is the largest city in northeast China, on the Songhua River. The area has plenty of snow, a very cold climate, and the frozen river provides lots of ice. The festival began in 1985 and opens every January, lasting as long as the weather allows. The sculptures are not ordinary by any means. They include ice slides, animals of all kinds, and full sized, highly detailed ice castles that are lighted at night and glow with many different colors. • Fairbanks, Alaska, has hosted winter carnivals that included ice sculpting as far back as the 1930s - before the invention of the chain saw. In 1989, the winter fun was revived with the Annual World Ice Art Championships. Competitions for single block and multi-block carvings in abstract and realistic sculptures attract ice artists from the world over. The month-long events are run by Ice Alaska, Inc., a nonprofit organization. Recent years have hosted as many as 70 teams and 45,000 visitors. The 2011 events will be held from February 22 – March 27. Wear your snuggies.
• The original Ice Hotel in Jukkasjärvi, Sweden, is now open for its 21st season. Starting with 645-square-foot igloo, it is now the world’s largest hotel of ice and snow at about 59,201 square feet. An overnight stay includes reindeer hides to sleep on (inside cozy sleeping bags with thermal underwear), hot lingonberry juice at your bedside when you awaken, and a hot sauna and hot buffet breakfast! The Ice Hotel also has warm accommodations and recommends combining one night in the cold with nights in the warm rooms. So, if you are looking for some unusual adventure this winter, join the 50,000 visitors expected at the Ice Hotel, just 124.3 miles north of the Arctic Circle.

I was so happy when I heard that Nancy O’Dell would be replacing Mar y Hart as coanchor on “Entertainment Tonight” when Mar y retires in 2011. I’m a big fan of Mar y Hart, but it I have to admit it will be nice to see Nancy’s lovely face on TV again! What sort of things is is she up to in the meantime? -- Jillian F., Fort Worth,Texas
A: Nancy is thrilled
by her latest career move. She told me: “It is such an honor (to be chosen to replace Mary Hart). Mary is such a TV icon. I remember watching it when it first debuted and thinking, ‘Oh my God, that would be such a cool show to work for.’ And here I am, working for it! It is very exciting.” Nancy also has Nancy O’Dell teamed up with Florida Orange Juice on a promotion to help make mornings special for families. She explained: “It’s so difficult for people to make their mornings meaningful with their families, as they are being pulled in so many directions. But all you need is 15 minutes, whether it’s over a glass of orange juice or over breakfast, to just sit down and talk with your family.” So Nancy is helping launch the Florida Orange Juice Morning Squeeze contest, with the grand prize being a family trip to Florida. To enter, go to www. FloridaJuice.com/Morning_Squeeze.php. ***

The show is called “Into the Dragon’s Lair,” which documents wildlife photographer Roger Horrocks and world-renowned underwater cameraman Didier Noiret as they travel to Botswana’s Okavango Delta to capture never-before-seen behaviors to help broaden the world’s scientific understanding of these fearsome creatures. It is definitely a don’t-miss show, and you can see it again Thursday night, Jan. 20. ***

If so, why was I denied my Experian report in February 2010 after receiving a report from the agency in November 2009? -- Dave, Wisconsin Dear Dave: The law allows you one free credit report from each of the major credit bureaus -- Equifax, Experian and TransUnion -- every 12 months. Pork bellies (that’s where bacon comes from) are trading at an all-time high. The price of bacon spiked in August, as summer is peak pork-eating season. Prices have remained high. You might consider buying bacon in bulk and then slicing it yourself. * * * Dear Mary: I would like to use my unheated, insulated three-season sun porch as a craft and sewing area. I scrub my pot and basket and use a paper filter. Any ideas? Should I buy a new coffee maker? -- Sarah, Kansas Dear Sarah: First, I don’t think you’re being silly. If you enjoy your coffee as I do, this is a big deal. I’m sure your coffee maker is fine, but it may have a lot of residual vinegar from too much cleaning. Cleaning your machine once a year should be sufficient. Run a few cycles with clear water to get rid of the vinegar. Next, make sure you are using good water. Use bottled or filtered water if your tap water is highly chlorinated or just not tasty. And make sure you are using freshly roasted coffee beans. As you may know, I roast my own beans. I purchase green coffee beans (http://www.URoastEm. com) for about $6 a pound and roast once a week. It takes about 20 minutes and produces awesome coffee. Good water and great beans make fabulous TUES., NOV. 29 coffee!
Dear Josie: Perfect for heating a small area is a portable electric radiant heater. Radiant heaters heat objects, such as your feet and hands, as opposed to a convection heater, which heats the air. Deck the Halls with Your Pets in Mind ‘Tis the season in which people the world over willingly and of sound mind invite chaos into their lives. We’ve dangled from ladders while stapling lights to our rooftops. We’ve dragged trees from the outside inside. We’ve flitted from party to party and engaged in full-on battle at the stores. And through it all, there is the dog. While a dog doesn’t know Santa from the Pope, he’s no fool. He sniffs change in the air, excitement on the horizon, and he may or may not like it. That all depends on you. Here are a few things you can do to keep your dog safe and feeling secure during the holly, jolly madness of the holidays. -- Keep the food out of reach. This goes double for candy and chocolate, both of which can be extremely toxic -- even fatal -- for dogs. While turkey and gravy leftovers are unlikely to kill your dog, they aren’t good for him, either. Dogs have sensitive digestive systems, and sugary or fatty treats are likely to invoke a wave of upset -- on his stomach and your state of mind. -- Designate the tree, the lights and the decorations off-limits. You can make this easier to enforce by hanging things like lights, holly and mistletoe high overhead. (Holly, mistletoe and poinsettias are production also toxic to dogs.) A small fence around the Christ1 MIN: 45 HRS:keep mas tree will the pooch out of its water and stamp away from fragile, tasty-looking ornaments. -- Utilize AdVenture the crate.Media For dogs that are crate-trained, this is the simplest solution to the problem of keeping the chaos of Christmas away from your dog. To properly crate-trained dogs, the crate represents a safe place of his own. Its floor is lined with a fleece bed or a soft blanket. A few of his favorite toys await inside. It’s quiet, comfortable and familiar -- qualities dogs love and need, and that are likely to be compromised come Christmastime. -- Remember the power of the leash. When used properly, the leash is perhaps the most powerful link between dog and owner. It gives the owner a degree of control he or she might not otherwise have, especially in crowded or overwhelming circumstances, i.e., a holiday party. And it keeps the dog safe. Whenever you have a high-traffic situation at home -- many people coming and going -- keep your dog on Tidbits® of Coachella Valley

Recently appearing in the mainstream media, information raises serious questions about the overuse of acetaminophen (generic Tylenol). When used in excess, this drug can lead to severe liver disease that can prove fatal on occasion. This revelation added to a huge pile of evidence that links seemingly benign pain relievers with major health risks. Finally, new information sheds added light on the debate over pain pills. When it comes to over-the-counter pain relief, there are two main medications -- acetaminophen and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Both medications are associated with risk. For acetaminophen, provided no liver disease is present or the patient is not a heavy drinker, up to 4 grams or two 500 milligram tablets taken four times daily is very safe. At these levels, abnormalities of the liver very rarely occur. The problem with the ubiquitous pain reliever is that so many other medications -- such as hydrocodone, over-the-counter decongestants and cough suppressants -- use a combination of drugs and include acetaminophen, making it easy for patients to inadvertently take too much. NSAIDs, which include aspirin, ibuprofen (Motrin), naproxen (Aleve) and diclofenac (Voltaren), are associated with significant risks of stomach irritation that can lead to serious gastrointestinal bleeding. Other major side effects include a higher risk of stroke and heart attack, elevations in blood pressure and damage to the kidneys. NSAIDs also impair the function of platelets, contributing to an increased risk of bleeding. This effect has led to a therapeutic benefit of low dose aspirin to significantly reduce the risk of heart attack and strokes. The health care community thought we had seen a major breakthrough with the development of specific NSAIDs that relieved pain, but they did not cause significant irritation of the stomach or lead to platelet dysfunction. This class of drugs included Vioxx, Celebrex and Bextra. Almost overnight, virtually every patient with pain was taking these “safer” pain relievers. Unfortunately, Vioxx and Bextra were removed from the market because of a dramatic increased risk of heart attacks, heart failure and stroke. Today, this class of NSAIDs is used with much more caution, but many still remain concerned that all NSAIDs can adversely affect the heart. Recently issued by researchers in Denmark and

YOUR
SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margeneau
Increased Retirement Age Won’t Impact Soon-to-be Retirees Q:
I am about to turn 62. I can’t decide if I should file for my Social Security now or wait until I am 66. My friends say I should take it now because Congress will probably increase the retirement age to 68. So if I don’t take it now, I’ll have to wait six more years to get it. What do you think I should do?
A:
I think it’s almost a sure bet that once Congress gets around to reforming Social Security, they will raise the retirement age. It might go up to 68. It might even be increased to 70. But there is no way that increased eligibility age will impact you or anyone currently nearing retirement age. Such major changes to Social Security are always phased in over a long period of time, primarily to give people a chance to adapt to and plan for the changes. Consider our currently slow transition to age 67 as the “full retirement age.” The law increasing the retirement age from 65 to 67 was passed in 1983. Over the past several decades, we have inched our way up to where we are now -- age 66 as the retirement age. Not until 2020 will the age start slowly going up again, until it reaches 67 in the year 2027. In other words, it is taking us 45 years to bump up the retirement age from 65 to 67. So, there is zero chance that it will be increased to 68 or 70 in the next several years. To put it another way, I’ve got a couple of cute grandkids under the age of 3. They might have to wait until age 68 to get Social Security, although they don’t seem at all concerned about that

issue! And you shouldn’t be concerned, either. You should make a decision about retiring at 62 or 66 based on your retirement plans and your life expectancy -- not on your friends’ wayward advice to jump on the Social Security bandwagon before it speeds off into the future. * * *
Q:
I am a stay-at-home dad and a househusband. And I have been doing that for about 20 years. You recently offered a Social Security guide for women that explains the benefits they are due as a wife or widow on their husband’s Social Security record. But do you have a guide for men like me?
A:
It’s the same guide. All you have to do is change “wife” to “husband” and “widow” to “widower” (and maybe a few “she” to “he” and “her” to “him”) as you read the publication, and it will work for you. Almost every Social Security rule that I can think of is gender-neutral. In other words, the same rules apply to men as to women. And the same rules apply to husbands as to wives. I suppose I could have called my fact sheet, “A Spouse’s Guide to Social Security” (as opposed to “A Woman’s Guide to Social Security”), and filled it with a lot of awkward references to “wife’s or husband’s benefits” and “widow’s or widower’s benefits” and “she/he” or “her/him” pronouns. But I didn’t do that because societal history just hasn’t been on your side. I guess I don’t need to tell you that you’re in the minority. It might be a growing minority, but it’s a very small class of people for now. For example, the last time I checked, there were something like 3 million women collecting benefits as a wife and more than 5 million women getting widow’s benefits on their husband’s Social Security record. But there were only about 35,000 husbands and 40,000 widowers getting benefits on a wife’s Social Security account. * * *
verted to divorced widow’s benefits. So that part went OK. But I have never received the $255 burial benefit. He never remarried and we never had children. Shouldn’t I be due the $255?
A:
No. The law says the one-time $255 Social Security death benefit can be paid only to a widow who was living with the deceased at the time of death. If you have a Social Security question, Tom Margenau has the answer. Contact him at thomas.margenau@comcast.net. Q:
I have been getting Social Security for several years. My wife will soon be applying for her Social Security. Will we have to combine her Social Security with mine and pay taxes on both benefits?
A:
I think I have said about a thousand times in this column that I am a retired employee of the Social Security Administration. And as such, I am a Social Security benefit expert, not a Social Security tax expert. The Internal Revenue Service handles all tax matters, including the payment of Social Security taxes and issues involving the taxation of Social Security benefits. I know enough to tell you that assuming you and your wife file a joint tax return, you may have to pay taxes on both your own and your wife’s Social Security benefits if your combined taxable income exceeds $32,000 per year. But that’s pretty much all I know about the subject. For further information, you’ll need to contact the IRS or a tax adviser. * * *

Stay Upbeat for a Better Outlook on Life Q:
My wife and I seem to have developed a negative outlook on life. We’re not sure how it’s happened, but we tend to feed off each other’s negative attitudes. Is this something that is typical of seniors, or is it just us?
should agree to support him only until a specified date. They can help him with his resume and insist that he spend five days a week looking for work. Sometimes internships or volunteer jobs are a good starting point for networking. He should ask his working buddies to notify him of any possible openings. A potential employer may say there are no current openings, but this is an opportunity to keep his foot in the door for later possibilities. When he becomes employed, he will be happier feeling more independent. It is part of the process of building a career and finding out what he really wants to do for a lifetime.
