If you’ve ever wondered how some of your favorite products and businesses came up with their names, check out some interesting facts Tidbits has discovered about the origins of some of these corporate monikers.

• An afternoon hike in the mountains provided the inspiration for Velcro, a revolutionary new fastener for fabric invented by Swiss engineer George de Mestral. When returning from a walk with his dog through the woods, de Mestral found they were both covered with cockleburs. Curious to know what made them stick so stubbornly to his clothing, he examined one of the burs under his microscope. He discovered it was covered with thousands of tiny hooks that had tenaciously gripped his wool pants and his dog’s fur. The invention of Velcro followed soon after. With its tiny hooks fastening to loops of fabric, the name Velcro came from combining “velour” with “crochet”. His was idea patented in 1955.

• Paul Orfalea’s college chums dubbed him “Kinko” because he had a mass of curly hair.

Uncovering the True Value of Free I received an interesting letter from Liz P., who works for a nonprofit organization, the Spreckels Organ Society, in San Diego. She shared with me her pet peeve, that people in general do not appreciate things that are free. She wrote: “The Spreckels Organ Society provides free concerts every Sunday afternoon, and in the summer we produce an International Organ Festival on Monday nights that is absolutely FREE, and completely underappreciated. I know your readers are different. But what is it about the psyche of the general public that makes us not value what is free?”

I’ve been thinking a lot about Liz’s letter. There is something psychological about the word “free” that stirs a variety of emotions in most people.

We are suspicious. The concept of “free” has become a big marketing tool in our society.

Everyone at some point has believed something would be free, only to get sucked into an expensive proposition -- whether it was for a gym membership, book club or another kind of service -- because of that sneaky fine print!

We are realistic. It is human nature to give little value to something that is totally free. In our hearts, we believe that we get what we pay for. No one would be drawn to an investment newsletter costing $1.99 a year. Surely it would be filled with useless information. But change that to $199 a year and all of a sudden we assume it contains really great information. We equate value with cost, and even if we cannot afford it, something that is expensive demands our respect.

It’s only a sample. Trial offers and sample bites may indeed be free, but they aren’t the real deal.

We expect samples to be free, but we don’t go out of our way to be appreciative of them. We think of a free sample as we would a commercial or a print ad. It’s bait designed to get us to go for the real thing.

It’s not really free. I can’t help but think about the infamous “FREE Puppy!” The initial acquisition

Usually, when I write of training, I’m referring to a dog. But there are times when only a coin flip can decide who -- dog or master -- is in greater need of education. This is one of those times.

“We got our Doberman, Sasha, from a breeder when she was 8 weeks old. She’s now 4.

“When she first came to live at our house, we had a male pug named Max and a female black Lab named Quincy, who stays outside in a kennel. Max and Sasha loved each other, but Sasha didn’t love Quincy. They got into a few fights when Quincy came inside on winter nights. Sasha always went after her neck, but Quincy was never hurt.

“A few weeks later, Max died from unknown diabetes. We tried to bring Sasha around other dogs, but she wouldn’t accept them.

“Then, when Sasha was a year old, we found kittens in a woodpile. She loved them! She thought they were her babies. So we kept a male cat we call Patch, and those two never had any problems, except for one time when Patch scratched Sasha. But Sasha didn’t fight back.

“We also have a parakeet that Sasha loves to stalk and chase around.

“So far, Sasha has bitten six people; three of them had to go to the����������� hospital for stitches. Two of the 1 45 ����� people she bit live in the house, me being one and my mom the other. She bit me to the extent that I had to get plastic surgery on my cheek.

“She also has bitten my aunt and three friends who walked into my house without me accompanying them -- which is understandable but not tolerable.

“A few weeks ago, we brought a puppy that we wanted to keep home to see Sasha. He is a Boxerblack Lab mix. Sasha loved him. It’s obvious that she always wanted to play with other dogs, but was just too scared.

“We’ve had the puppy for about four weeks now.

The second week, Sasha bit him on the nose when he tried to walk over to her food bowl. She has growled at Patch a few times when he did this, but she never bit. The puppy wasn’t hurt.

Osteoporosis afflicts millions of Americans, and proven medical therapies have brought great relief for this painful illness. But recent reports have examined the risk of developing an unusual fracture of the femur (thigh bone) in patients who are prescribed long-term use of bisphosphonate medications, the common first-line defense for treatment of osteoporosis.

These fractures are characterized by an almost straight-line break of the femur, which can occur either spontaneously or following minor trauma. In a study published in the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research, researchers reported that these unusual fractures were much more common in patients taking Fosamax, the brand name for alendronate. This is the second serious and rare side effect of Fosamax, which leaves many patients confused and fearful of the drug’s complications.

As a result of these studies, some doctors have advised their patients that the bisphosphonate medications could have side effects that make continued use questionable. And some patients taking these osteoporosis medications have spontaneously stopped treatment for fear of fracture. However, the evidence is compelling that the benefits of using bisphosphonates for managing osteoporosis far outweighs the potential side effects.

To complicate matters, some research now shows that bisphosphonates are not the cause of these unusual fractures of the femur. In a recent paper published in the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine, the prevalence of this fracture was shown to be very rare. And compared to subjects not taking the bisphosphonates, it was no more common in patients taking either oral alendronate or the intravenous zoledronic acid (Reclast). Of the 14,195 women followed over a 10-year period, only 10 developed this unusual fracture and less than a third of them were taking a bisphosphonate.

Osteoporosis is a truly devastating disease, which weakens bone and can cause a wide array of fractures, including collapsed vertebra and hip fractures. As many as 50 percent of women over the age of 50 will have at least one osteoporosisrelated fracture during their lifetime. The incidence of osteoporosis-related fractures is also common in men over the age of 70. Serious bone fractures later in life can have major consequences. For example, following a hip fracture, 50 percent of patients are never able to walk without assistance, 25 percent are admitted to nursing homes and oneyear mortality is increased by 25 percent.

Who Are We Once We Retire?

If somebody asked me if I wanted to reinvent myself, I think I’d reply tongue-in-cheek that there are parts of me that could use a tune-up, but overall, no. But after reading Marjory Zoet Bankson’s new book, “Creative Aging: Rethinking Retirement and Non-Retirement in a Changing World” (SkyLight Paths Publishing, $16.99), I’m reconsidering my answer.

“Creative Aging” was written for those of us who are thinking about what it means to grow older and retire ... and what comes next.

The book is about life transitions -- experiencing endings before we can make new beginnings, and then experiencing a period of trying things out before we take on our newly reinvented lives.

This kind of planning and thinking can be crucial, especially for those of us who have felt ourselves defined by career. If we’re no longer an (accountant/factory worker/teacher), then what are we? What will we do with the rest of our years? Will they be meaningful?

“Creative Aging” walks us through the steps of getting there: letting go of vocational identity, feeling stuck and resistant to change, drawing energy from the past, forming a new vision for the future, moving toward it, taking risks and finding a new purpose.

Your e-mail was just one of many I received from readers around the country who got the same reaction (blank stares) from Social Security Administration employees when trying to discuss this provision of Social Security law.

In a nutshell, the “ARF” rule allows a person who is over age 62 -- but not yet “full retirement age” (66 in most cases) -- and who is still working -- but not making too much over the earnings penalty threshold of $14,160 per year -- to claim some reduced retirement benefits until age 66. At this point, his or her benefit rate would be raised because much of the initial reduction factor would be eliminated. I discussed this issue with a former colleague who still works for SSA. We agreed that the problem is that computers do everything for today’s employees.

When I started with the agency back in the early 1970s, we still did most of our own computations. In other words, we figured out Social Security benefits for most retirees by hand.

Apparently Progressive didn’t mind her association with its competitor, as they cast her in their most successful series of commercials to date. ***

John Forsythe, who seemed the consummate professional in every role he played. How are his Hollywood friends responding to his death?

Heather Locklear, who also worked with him on “Dynasty,” said: “John was a gentleman in every sense of the word. He was a gifted actor who knew the true meaning of being gracious and kind.”

John passed away on April 1 from complications of pneumonia after a four-year battle with cancer.

When You Can’t Afford Summer Camp In many families that are having to cut back on expenses, summer camp for the kids is often one of the things to be crossed off the list. But it’s still possible to give kids a summer camp experience at little or no cost.

Look into YMCA camps or those run by other nonprofit organizations.

With local for-profit camps, ask about camping scholarships or volunteer opportunities. For example, if you volunteer to work in the kitchen or as a counselor or crafts teacher, perhaps your child’s camp fees can be worked off.

When paying for sleep-away camp is completely out of the question, there are still ways you can give your child a camp experience.

If you know other families in your situation, arrange with other parents to do group outings or set up a one-day “camp” at each of their homes.

With five families working together, you can provide a week of camp experience with only one of those days at your house.

Here are some ideas: ● Camp out in tents in the back yard.

Remember the S’mores, burgers, water balloons, flashlights (of course) and squirt guns. ● Hike in a nearby state park (ask about rangerguided walks and talks) for an afternoon. ● Look to your networking group for a one-day theme camp. Members with various businesses can instruct the kids on computers, fashion, art or cooking. ● Go on field trips to visit a farm (ask about the possibility of camping overnight or picking berries), hands-on museum or fire department. ● Host a movie day with rented videos and lots of popcorn, or organize a scavenger hunt. ● Spend an afternoon at a local swimming pool or lake. ● Have a crafts day. Search online for “summer camp crafts” for ideas. (Let the kids make their own camp T-shirts.) Check the local big-box hardware store for children’s classes on building things like birdhouses. ● If you’re near a college or university that gives degrees in early childhood education, inquire about any students who need “hands-on” hours for extra credit, or who want to design and run a summer camp.

By arranging a week of camp with a few other families, your costs will be low and your kids will still be able to experience many things they would have at a sleep-away camp.
