There is an old and wise Chinese proverb that says, “If you want happiness for an hour, take a nap. If you want happiness for a day, go fishing.” For anglers, nothing more need be said. This week, Tidbits casts a long look at one of life’s great pleasures: fishing. • It’s one of the best fishing spots in the world: Port Loring in the Almaguin Highlands in Ontario, Canada. If you go there, expect to find species like small and large mouth bass, northern pike and walleye. You’ll find a series of lakes providing more than 100 miles of shoreline with great fishing spots.

When you bring your lure by a fallen tree or a little pocket on the down side of a rock, you’ve put “food” exactly where the fish are waiting for a meal. In most cases, they’ll grab it before it gets by them.

It’s interesting to speculate about the possibilities, though. For instance, if you currently reside in the state of Kentucky or parts of Tennessee, but for the whimsy of fate you could be a Transylvanian. Some people once wanted to take parts of Texas and Oklahoma to create the great state of Texlahoma (perhaps displaying a slight lack of imagination). When the Mormon church settled out west, Brigham Young petitioned to have the state of Deseret created, and the land he suggested make up the state included present-day Utah, almost all of Nevada and Arizona, a sizable chunk of California and bits of five other states. James Bond James Bond, the debonair secret agent created by writer Ian Fleming, has remained a popular iconic figure for decades. The 23 (so far) movies featuring this colorful character have garnered a total box office gross of over $4.7 billion. • The first Bond movie, “Dr. No,” was released on May 8, 1963. It featured a then relatively unknown Scottish actor, Sean Connery, as Agent 007. The movie was an immediate hit, and Connery was on his way to superstardom. He made six more Bond films after that initial portrayal. • Sean Connery was not Ian Flemming’s first choice to portray his James Bond character. He had originally favored Roger Moore to play the part of the super spy, but he was voted down by film executives. • Previous attempts to adapt the James Bond novels resulted in a 1954 television episode of “Climax Mystery Theatre,” based on the first novel, “Casino Royale.” The short-lived TV Bond starred American actor Barry Nelson as “Jimmy Bond.” • “You Only Live Twice” is the first James Bond film to scrap the plot of the original Fleming script material. As in the book, the movie places the story in Japan, uses Blofeld as the main villain and features Bond’s girl as Kissy Suzuki. Beyond those basic elements, however, the story departs completely from the original.

of the profits, which previous directors of Bond films never received. An agreement was never reached, and a Bond film was never added to Spielberg’s long list of accomplishments. • The reason James Bond always wants his vodka martinis shaken, not stirred, is that shaking makes the drink colder in less time. It also puts more air into the mixture making the flavor stronger. • The real James Bond was an ornithologist (a person who studies and classifies birds) from Jamaica who was most famous for his book, “The Birds of the West Indies.” In exchange for the use of his name, ornithologist James Bond used Fleming’s name to classify a rare species of Jamaican birds. • “From Russia With Love” was made into a movie only because it was one of President John F. Kennedy’s favorite books.

Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig. • It is only with the advent of the Craig era that film directors outside of Great Britain have been used for Bond movies. In fact, all were from the Commonwealth until 2008’s “Quantum of Solace,” which is the first Bond film by a non-United Kingdom director. That director, Marc Foster, is German-Swiss. ▄

• Christopher Lee, who played the evil Scaramanga in “The Man With The Golden Gun,” was Ian Fleming’s cousin. • Amazing but true: Burt Reynolds and Adam West were the first choices to take Sean Connery’s place as James Bond. • George Lazenby, who succeeded Sean Connery as James Bond, only appeared in one film as 007. Even before the release of “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service” (1969), Lazenby announced he would not reprise the role. After Lazenby, Roger Moore took over. He played Bond for 12 years. • Six actors have played Bond through the years: Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger

WithEveryday all the talk these days about the high cost of health care and the need for good health CHEAPSKATE insurance, it’s possible that some really good news by Mary Hunt has gone unnoticed. I’d like to fix that by sharing some exciting tidbits to help you stay healthier for longer, thus cutting your personal health care expenses. The first comes from the smart and funny doctor duo Dr. Michael Roizen and Dr. Mehmet Oz, who -- among many other things, such as appear on television shows and write runaway best-sellers operate the website RealAge. They call this good news the “do nothing” way to burn more calories: Drink tea. If you are a regular reader of this column, you know that this tea endorsement made me more than a little joyful. It’s been a full year now since I gave up Diet Coke and replaced it with iced tea. I have personally experienced the health improvements that RealAge reports: Drinking tea regularly can increase your metabolism, allowing you to burn up to 80 extra calories per day. Tea also can soothe achy knees, improve blood sugar levels and reduce your risk of a stroke. As I wrote last July, since making tea a part of my daily routine, my blood pressure has dropped measurably, as has my cholesterol. I’m sure “The You Docs” would not be at all surprised to learn of my health improvements, as these, too, are effects of drinking tea. However, the results of another recent medical study have made me even more excited than the report on tea. The March issue of Archives of General Psychiatry reports that patients who maintain a greater sense of purpose in life as they age may have greater protection against Alzheimer’s disease. Purpose, which the researchers define as a “psychological tendency to derive meaning from life’s experiences and to possess a sense of intentionality and goal directedness that guides

MARLIN WHALE SHARK (Word Search solution page 16) MINNOWS YELLOWFIN

Before you even reach the door, you hear it. Thump, thump, thump -- his tail against the floor. He knows you’re home; he heard the car pull into the drive. You hear the slightest whimper as you linger, fumbling through a ring of keys. The thumping grows louder, faster, with an air of impatience to it now: What’s taking so long? Don’t you know I’m waiting for you? Boy, do you know! As you slide the key into the lock and turn the doorknob, you brace yourself. The whimper bursts into a barrage of high-pitched yelps as the door swings open. For the next few minutes, you stand your ground as your best bud tries to scale you like Mt. McKinley. You’ve got a jumper on your hands. Are you going to stand there and play kissee-face all day, or are you going to do something about it? Let’s face it, when a dog leaps into the air and turns pirouettes in your honor, it’s cute -- to you. Some people may not see the adorable side of it. While you love your pooch unconditionally, others have conditions -- i.e., that he doesn’t ruin their clothing, knock them down, slobber all over their face and hump their leg when they visit. Fair enough. Thankfully, it’s easy to catch him in the act and immediately correct him, which is how you solve most dog behavioral problems. First, what not to do: stepping on his back toes and kneeing him in the chest are Gestapo measures, not corrections. These tactics are inhumane. The best solution is to prevent the problem from developing. Decide right now that your dog won’t be allowed to jump on you or other people. Be consistent. Correct mistakes. Praise him when he keeps his paws on the ground. Offer toys and affection at his level, rather than holding them high for him to jump up and retrieve. And if you don’t want him to jump on people, you can’t allow him to jump on the furniture or sleep in your bed. If your dog is allowed to jump up onto furniture, it will be difficult, if not impossible, to make him understand why he can’t also jump on you. The reasons for his desire to jump are pretty simple: Besides the obvious fact that the furniture is comfy and smells like you, he prefers it to the floor because it is the more dominant position. It’s Time to Show Mom Love Q:

As the only son in our family, and as the father of a new daughter, I am experiencing the differences between sons and daughters. I now realize how little I really appreciated my mother in my growing up years. Because of my stubbornness and wanting to show my independence, I made her life pretty difficult when she never deser ved it. Today, I am ver y sorr y for treating her this way. Why do kids take so long to learn how their mother’s love and caring impacts their future? Dad is not in good health, and I know mom needs help too, although she has not asked for it. How can I best show my regret for being such a difficult son and ease my conscience?

A:

Until children grow up and experience parenthood for themselves, they really don’t understand that parental discipline and correction originates in love, caring and an enormous sense of responsibility for their child. Now that your eyes have been opened you can begin to see that the differences you once rejected and dispised about your mother were all about the self-centered attitude you had adopted. Now is the time for you to take the lead and make an honest confession to your mother, letting her know that you regret the disrespect you showed to her in your younger years. Apologize, ask for her forgiveness and assure her that you do love and appreciate her. Show your love by offering your help in caring for both her needs and your dad’s. Keep the

My husband has serious health problems, and I have been caring for him over three years. He is a great husband and we have a happy marriage. My problem is that I am running out of steam and beginning to feel the effects of too much responsibility. Our family wants to help me, but they live at a distance. Questions From and About Widows Q:

My wife and I are both in our 70s and we each get our own Social Security benefit. I’m confused about what she would be due if I die. Can you help?

A:

First, she’d be due that miserly one-time $255 Social Security death benefit. Frequent readers know I’ve often written about this embarrassing pittance the government doles out to the spouse of someone who has died. I say it should be raised (to maybe $2,500) or simply eliminated. But no one listens to me. So again, your wife would get a check for $255. She would also receive a widow’s supplement from your Social Security account IF her own benefit is less than yours. As a general rule, the supplement would take her total benefits up to whatever amount you were getting when you died. For example, let’s say you are collecting $2,000 per month, and your wife gets $1,500 per month from her own retirement account. If you die, she’d keep receiving her $1,500 payment, but she’d start getting an extra $500 in widow’s benefits to take her up to your $2,000 per month level. CONTENTS One other little bit ofTABLE Social OF Security business: ISSUE 2010.19benefits She’d have to return any Social Security deposited to your bank account for FISHING the month you GONE die -- and any subsequent months.pages In other 1-4 words, if you die on Aug. 15, she’d have to return the Social Music Legend: Security benefit sent on yourLED behalf in September ZEPPELIN (which is the August payment).pages Many 5-6times this won’t be an issue because the Social Security check JAMES BOND isn’t even given once the government knows you’ve pages 7-8 died, or the bank automatically returns the funds to the government if the Social Security check was authorized before the government learned of your death. But if your check falls through one of those cracks, it’s your wife’s job to return it. No matter how the money gets returned, the bad news is that even though you were alive half of the month, the entire month’s payment has to be sent back. The good news is that your wife would be due that widow’s supplement for the entire month of August, even though she was a widow for only half the month.

Q:

My husband died several years ago and I received the $255 death benefit. I never received any monthly widow’s benefits because my own Social Security was more than my husband’s rate. Now I’ve learned that when I die, my children won’t get the $255 death benefit. Is this true?

A: Yes, it’s true. A number of years ago, in an

attempt to save a few nickels for the Social Security trust funds, Congress restricted the payment of the death benefit to “a spouse who was living with the deceased when he or she died.” When your husband died, there was a “living with spouse” (you), and that’s why you got the $255 check. But when you die, you will leave behind no spouse, so there is no death benefit due.

Q: In a past column, you said a widow gets

100 percent of her husband’s Social Security. I don’t receive anywhere near that. How do I get the full 100-percent rate?

I usually say a widow can get “up to” 100 percent of her husband’s Social Security benefit. How much she actually receives depends on several factors, primarily her age when she started getting widow’s benefits. If those benefits start before age 66, they are permanently reduced roughly one-half of 1 percent for each month a check is paid before that magic “full Social Security age.” For example, at age 60 -- the earliest that widows can receive benefits -- she’d get about a 70 percent rate. At age 62, it would be about 82 percent.

Q: I am getting widow’s benefits from my

deceased husband’s account. I am due to inherit a substantial amount of money from my sister’s estate. I was told that because the amount is more than $14,000, my Social Security benefits will be suspended when I claim the inheritance. How long will that suspension last?

A:

Your Social Security benefits will not be suspended. The $14,000 limit (it’s actually $14,160) applies only to earned income. In other words: If you were working and earning more than $14,160, and if you were under age 66, you might lose some or all of your widow’s benefits. But the money you’ll get from your sister’s estate is not “earned” income. So, you could inherit a million dollars and you will still be eligible for Social Security benefits. Walk for Health One of the best things we seniors can do for our overall health is walk for exercise. But it takes a little planning to get the full benefits. There are two things you’ll want to consider before you get started. Shoes: The more important part of your workout gear is the shoes you wear. These carry all our weight, and the wrong ones can lead to pain and injury. Street shoes or sandals are the worst culprits. Although you can buy shoes made specifically for walking, your best bet is running shoes. If a shoe can take the pounding that running brings, it’ll be more than adequate for walking. Get fitted for your shoes at an athletic shoe store. Tell the salesperson about any stability problems you might have, as there are shoes made for that. (It’s especially important if you’re going to be walking on sidewalks, where the surface isn’t as perfect as an indoor mall or gym track.) Wear the same type of socks for your fitting as you’ll wear for walking. Make sure the shoe is flexible, and walk around the store to check for comfort. Pedometer: It’s said that 10,000 is the number of steps we should take daily for weight loss, and 6,000 steps for maintaining health. Pedometers are little gadgets that clip to your waistband and count your steps. Some of them are electronic, and some work via tiny springs inside that sense your body’s movements. All adjust to your stride length (you program it to match your individual distance between steps) and calculate how far you’ve 2nd Quarter 2010 walked. 19 system, or walk with a group, Use Week the buddy for safety. a terrible blow to our family. We would appreciate everyone understanding that this is a private family tragedy.” Friend and former “Designing Women” co-star Annie Potts told People magazine: “Dixie Carter was a goddess. Q: How is actress Maura Tierney doing in

her breast cancer treatment? Will she be back on TV soon? -- Greta D., via e-mail

A:

Maura’s representative, Christina Papadopolous, said that the 45-year-old actress “has finished treatment and is doing very well, and is happy to move forward with the next phase of her life.” That next phase happens to be returning to the FX network’s action-drama “Rescue Me,” where she’ll return in 2011 for four episodes as Denis Leary’s love interest during the show’s seventh (and final) season. ***

again? I’ve heard that he is, but didn’t he just recently get divorced from his first wife? -- Ginger F., Port St. Lucie, Fla.

A:

While the former “Dawson’s Creek” star hasn’t revealed if there are wedding bells in the future for him and girlfriend Kimberly Brook, I do predict plenty of diapers and pacifiers. James recently revealed via Twitter (the latest go-to forum for celebs to reveal personal, breaking news) that he and Kimberly are expecting their first child later this year. A:

Conan recently announced that he will indeed be bringing his latenight-hosting duties to TBS. His show will air at 11 p.m., with George Lopez taking on the midnight timeslot with “Lopez Tonight.” However, make no mistake: There is no animosity in this timeslot switcharoo. George is the Conan O’Brien one who actively courted and pursued Conan to sign with TBS, and he couldn’t be happier that Conan accepted. “I can’t think of anything better than doing my show with Conan as my lead-in,” George said. “It’s the beginning of a new era in late-night comedy.” With a reported eight-figure deal, as well as allowing Conan to own his own show (which he would not have been able to at Fox), the move to TBS was the most profitable, creativity-wise and monetary-wise. ***

Interest-Only Mortgages There are those who say that interest-only mortgages are the main reason for the housing market’s problems in recent years. Loans were given fast and loose, with many purchasers barely qualifying for the interest portion, never mind the principal when it was added in. Still, interest-only mortgage loans are still out there, and purchasers will sign up for them. On paper, an interest-only mortgage looks enticing: The first years offer a significantly lower monthly payment, especially if you’re only going to keep your home for a few years. But Freddie Mac might think there are clouds on the horizon. Freddie Mac (the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation) was charted by Congress in 1970 as a means of providing stability in residential mortgage markets, especially for low- and moderate-income buyers. It props up the market by providing capital to lenders. It can be taken as something of a warning that Freddie Mac recently announced that later this year, in September, it will stop purchasing interestonly mortgages. Not only will there be fewer choices in obtaining a mortgage, the message itself is rather grim. Part of the decision, it seems, is that while Freddie Mac saw an increase in defaulted and delinquent mortgages during the past few years, the decision to end those mortgages completely seems to say that it doesn’t see a light at the end of the tunnel -- and is bailing out HANDYMAN completely. SERVICES That’s not to say buyers won’t be able to get an interest-only loan, just that it will be tougher to find. Getting a loan is likely to be difficult, but not impossible, with borrowers needing to qualify at the full (interest plus principal) mortgage amount. There are other types of mortgages to consider: ■ Fixed-rate mortgage. These are the safest mortgages because your monthly payment will be stable for the life of the loan. The only things that could go up are the insurance and property-tax portions. With insurance, you have the opportunity to shop around. ■ Biweekly mortgages. You make half of your mortgage payment every two weeks. At the end of the year, you will have made 13 months’ of payments instead of 12. The mortgage gets paid off earlier because of the extra payment each year. Before you decide on an interest-only mortgage, run the numbers and see what they look like at www.mortgagecalculator.org. CLIP AND SAVE

How many times have you hit a great approach shot in there close to the hole, only to gag the putt? It’s exasperating! And we’ve all had the experience. There’s a key to sinking those putts, especially the short ones you know you should make. That key is to keep your hands moving through the ball along the target line, that invisible line that runs between the ball and the hole. When setting up for a putt, it’s important to have your feet square or slightly open to the target line with your body angled slightly toward the target to create the sensation in the stroke of pushing or underhand tossing the ball along the path to the hole. Position the ball on the instep of the left foot. This creates a slightly upward motion in the stroke to get the ball rolling smoothly. Have your hands slightly forward so that the top of your grip is in line with the front of the ball. Your goal is to swing the putter head straight back and then keep your forward stroke along that same target line through the ball. Keeping your eyes directly over the ball will help you visually achieve this goal. Now imagine a “finish line” along that target line about a foot ahead of the ball. That’s where you want both your hands and the putter face to finish in your swing. The key to making putts is to have your hands and the club face move together in the stroke, at the same speed, all the way through. The reason so many golfers gag these putts is because they halt their stroke just after impact and lose the all-important effect of proper follow through with hands and putter face at the “finish line”. • Sewing a Button. Whether you’re male or female, buttons tend to pop off at the most inopportune times. It is definitely handy to keep a small sewing kit nearby (in your desk, jacket, purse, or car) so that you can quickly repair the problem.
