• In his autobiography, Take Me Home, Denver described his life as the eldest son of a family shaped by a stern father who could never show his love for his children. His mother’s family was Irish and German Catholic, and it was from them that his love of music took root. At the age of 12, he received a 1910 Gibson acoustic jazz guitar from his grandmother. It was on this instrument that he learned to play and develop his singing talent. He cherished the guitar and kept it for the rest of his life.

• It was 20th-century French air force brigadier general and geopolitician — and bearer of the nickname “father of the French atom bomb” — Pierre Marie Gallois who made the following sage observation: “If you put tomfoolery into a computer, nothing comes out of it but tomfoolery. But this tomfoolery, having passed through a very expensive machine, is somehow ennobled and no one dares criticize it.” • Gravity makes you shorter. It’s true; gravity compresses your spine — in a weightless environment, you would be 2 to 3 inches taller than you are here on Earth. • You might be surprised to learn that the first ceiling fan was introduced way back in the 1860s. The lack of electricity was no deterrent; the device was powered by a stream of running water. • When the bubonic plague, more commonly known as the Black Death, was at its peak in Europe in the 14th century, a wide variety of remedies was prescribed, including smoking tobacco, bringing spiders into the household, inhaling the stench from a latrine, sitting between two large fires, drinking red wine in which new steel had been cooled, and bathing in goat urine. • Those who study such things say that women are better at identifying smells than men are. • In 1994, Singapore banned the importation and sale of chewing gum. Ten years later, lawmakers added a revision: Gum that has “therapeutic value” is now allowed. • Over the past year, in the United States lottery sales have increased by a whopping $1 billion. • Human skin is about 70 percent water, and the human brain is 80 percent water. *** Thought for the Day: “All living souls welcome whatever they are ready to cope with; all else they ignore, or pronounce to be monstrous and wrong, or deny to be possible.” — George Santayana © 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

Lightning

Over a 30-year record-keeping period, lightning has caused more human fatalities than tornadoes or hurricanes. Second only to floods, it is the leading cause of storm-related deaths. This week, Tidbits takes a closer look (but not too close!) at this fascinating atmospheric phenomenon. • The early Greeks wisely had great respect for - and fear of lightning, but they believed it to be a weapon of Zeus, the god of sky and thunder in Greek mythology. Because of this, any spot that had been struck by lightning was considered sacred, and temples were frequently constructed on these sites. • What really causes lightning? It is an abrupt and cataclysmic discharge of stored up electrical energy in the atmosphere. It starts within a cloud, with winds causing a collision between suspended particles. As a result, small ice crystals lose electrons, and larger particles gain electrons. These larger pieces cause a negative charge to build up in the lower part of the cloud, while a positive charge builds up on the ground below. When the cloud’s negative charge connects with the ground’s positive charge, the electrical current instantly follows that path, creating a flash of lightning. • The clap of thunder is the result of a shock wave created by the instantaneous heating of air in the flash column. The bolt’s path can be five times hotter than the surface of the sun! Usually, if you can hear thunder the storm is close enough for a lightning strike, even if the thunderstorm has passed. Lightning has been known to strike in clear skies as far as twenty

• Areas more likely to incur lightning strikes are tall trees, towers, light poles, flagpoles and open fields. In fact, most victims are near a tree or in an open area, such as a golf course or field. Lying flat on the ground actually increases your chances of being struck by a ground current. It is best to crouch as low as possible with your feet tightly close together while keeping as much distance from other people as possible. Under a tree is the second-leading location for lightning casualties. It’s also important to stay away from any pond, lake or other body of Tidbits Ad Proof: water.

I was flipping through channels the other afternoon, and I could have sworn I saw movie actress Sean Young on “The Young and The Restless.” Was that really her, and if so, why did she decide to do it? -- Jill G., Albuquerque, N.M.

I watched the MTV Video Music Awards, and it was the fun spectacle it always is. However, I have to say that Lady Gaga took the cake (or maybe meatpie?) when she wore that meat dress. What on Earth compelled her to wear that? -- Kelli J., via e-mail

A:

One of my favorite parts of the awards was seeing Cher still rocking that very revealing outfit she wore in her “If I Could Turn Back Time” video in 1989. Let’s see if Lady Gaga (real name Stefani Lady GaGa Germanotta) can do that in 40 years! But to answer your question, Gaga, 24, explained to Ellen DeGeneres (who is a vegan) why she wore the now infamous meat dress: “It is certainly no disrespect to anyone that is vegan or vegetarian. It has many interpretations: If we don’t stand up for what we believe in and if we don’t fight for our rights, pretty soon we’re going to have as much rights as the meat on our own bones. I am not a piece of meat.” ***

That was indeed the accomplished 50-yearold movie star. Sean played a featured role as Meggie McClain on the long-running hit soap opera opposite good friend Eric Braeden. She co-starred with him in the 2008 movie “The Man Who Came Back,” which also co-starred Eric’s “Titanic” co-star Billy Zane, along with Carol Alt, George Kennedy and Armand Assante. Of taking on the role of Meggie, Sean said: “Getting the chance to work with my dear friend Eric Braeden -- one of the true gentlemen in entertainment -- was certainly a deciding factor for me, as well as wanting to get back to work after taking a few years off to raise my kids.” ***

Potluck Parties Share the Fun and the Expense Everyday CHEAPSKATE

Dear Mary: I am trying to® plan a party for my daughter and her new husband. They are coming home on leave before her husband by Mary Hunt deploys to Afghanistan. None of us has met him before, so we would like to have a nice reception to make him feel welcome in our family. I am not sure what I should do for decorations or a meal. We expect to have between 40 and 65 guests at our home for this, so it will be a fairly big crowd. I have been out of work for five years and my finances are limited, so I need to keep the cost down. That is why I am asking you -- and perhaps your readers -- for any tips and suggestions that might help me host a nice party that will not break the bank. -- Joyce R., Michigan Dear Joyce: My first thought: potluck. By asking everyone to bring a favorite appetizer, main dish or dessert, you could have a wonderful spread of finger foods and yummy sweets, with everyone involved in welcoming home the happy couple. If you request that items come “table-ready,” such as hot casseroles, you won’t have to provide serving dishes, which will make things even easier. That way, everyone has a variety of yummy favorites to fill their plates with.

Page 7

As for decor, I’d go with a Hawaiian wedding theme. Search online for “Hawaiian party decorations” and you’ll find all kinds of ideas. Provided your relatives and guests are willing to participate in a potluck party (I’m certain they will be), this will free you up to either make or purchase a small wedding cake for them to cut and feed to each other for fun photos. Readers who are bursting with ideas of their own should head over to my blog, where we can continue this conversation (http://www. MoneyRulesDebtStinks.com). Dear Mary: I’m a 26-year-old community college student who also works as a freelance writer. I have student loans and am paying the accumulating interest on them while I’m in school. I also have nearly $18,000 in credit card debt, which I’m working to pay off. Since I’m self-employed, I know that I should start an individual retirement account to save for later in life. This is my question: Which is more important -- paying off the credit card debt in full or paying down the credit cards gradually and starting an IRA? -- Victoria K., via e-mail Dear Victoria: As long as you have outstanding consumer debt (and you have a lot of it), you don’t, in my opinion, have the luxury of putting any of your money at risk in an IRA. You could fund that retirement account to the maximum allowed for your income level every year and still it would look like a mouse standing next to an elephant, which would represent your consumer debt. I’m going to go one step further and advise you not to take any more student loans. I’m happy to know you are paying the interest on the loans you have now, but honestly, that is a tiny consolation in the bigger scheme of things. With the student debt and credit card balances, you must be looking at a total of $30,000 or more. Do everything in your power to become debt-free as soon as possible;

then you’ll be in a good position to begin investing. Do you have a question for Mary? E-mail her at mary@everydaycheapskate.com, or write to Everyday Cheapskate, P.O. Box 2135, Paramount, CA 90723. There are all sorts of wonderful things to be said for having more than one dog. They can be friends. They can keep each other company. They won’t get lonely. They’ll wear each other out. Some of those things might even be true. But none of them trumps what Albert Einstein said: “The only reason for time is so that everything doesn’t happen at once.” Notwithstanding Octomom, there’s a reason why women have only one child at a time. And there’s a reason why nature built in a healthy nine months between them. Having two dogs in the house can be richly rewarding -- if it’s done right. Going from no dogs to two dogs in one fell swoop is not doing it right. Bringing a dog into your house is a big responsibility. You have a new personality to get to know. You have things to learn about each other, things to teach each other, and you need time to bond. This is a one-on-one process. Having two dogs doesn’t change that. It just means you’ll have to devote more time in each day to doing it -- twice as much time. Dogs, like people, are individuals. They have their own personalities, their own likes and dislikes, their own way of relating, their own needs. Having two dogs doesn’t mean having two dogs that are exactly the same. That’s impossible. HRS: 1 MIN: 45 One of the problems that arise from getting more than one dog at the same time boils down to pecking AdVenture Media order. Dogs are pack animals. It is the dog owner’s job to establish him or herself as the alpha. But many people fail to realize this or don’t know how to accomplish it. And if the dog owner doesn’t step up, one of the dogs will. Someone has to be the leader of the pack. It is much easier for you, the dog owner, to secure that role if you only have to convince one dog at a time. Another problem that comes with getting two dogs at once is fear-aggression. One of the dogs will inevitably develop a shy personality. When coupled with his more assertive, dominant “friend,” he’ll tend to withdraw. This, in turn, leads to a lesser degree of socialization for the shy dog, which often results in fear-aggressive behavior as the dog grows into his personality and his role in the household. Hormone Replacement Should Be Used Carefully For American women reaching menopause, the discussion of hormone replacement therapy is likely overwhelming. Mixed messages on the benefits and risks of these treatments have left most women fearful and confused. As recently as five years ago, hormone replacement therapy for post-menopausal women was thought by many to be the fountain of youth, not only alleviating some of the features of aging but also reducing the risks of heart disease, stroke, Alzheimer’s and osteoporosis. But following a seminal paper published in the New England Journal of Medicine, new evidence indicated that hormone replacement therapy actually increased the risk of the same diseases that it had once been touted to prevent. And over time, more and more research has confirmed these findings. Published in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, research showed that hormone replacement therapy significantly increased the risk of breast cancer, particularly in women who were not overweight. In this study, the longer the hormones were taken, the higher the risk. For women who had a hysterectomy and took estrogen therapy alone for 15 years, the increased risk of breast cancer was 19 percent. Women taking estrogen and progesterone for 15 years saw an increased risk of 85 percent. Studies clearly show that hormone replacement therapy -- and particularly estrogen therapy -reduces the risk of osteoporosis, but new research now indicates that it does not help protect strength and muscle mass. Based on all this evidence, experts in the field now recommend hormone replacement therapy only to alleviate the symptoms of the menopause, using the lowest dose available and for as little time as possible. For women who have had a hysterectomy, estrogen alone can be used; otherwise, progesterone must be added, as estrogen alone dramatically increased the risk of uterine cancer. Despite the mounting evidence and warnings of adverse effects, many physicians are still not convinced that the increased risk of various health problems is significant. Some believe that the actual risk to an individual patient is small, even if the risk to the population as a whole is quite significant. There is also a large group of physicians who maintain that hormone replacement therapy does have significant antiaging effects. They say that adverse effects of the therapy are related to the fact that the hormones given are not identical to those naturally occurring in pre-menopausal women and that the dose administered is inappropriate. These physicians measure hormone levels in the blood and saliva and compound “natural or bioidentical hormones” to achieve physiological levels in the blood. Constant monitoring is required. While this approach is very popular, there is currently no rigorous research to document either benefit or risk in this form of therapy. Today, the vast majority of women continue to take hormone replacement therapy because their menopause symptoms remain so severe that they simply cannot manage without it. These symptoms include severe hot flashes, insomnia, emotional changes such as anxiety and depression, headaches, loss of libido and vaginal

dryness leading to pain with intercourse. Another common problem is an overactive bladder that is characterized by urinary frequency and a need to rush to the bathroom. The North American Menopause Society and the Endocrine Society agree that use of hormone replacement therapy should be limited to treatment of menopausal symptoms, that the lowest dose should be used and that the therapy should be discontinued as soon as possible. Alternate treatments such as vaginal estrogen creams should be considered for women who have vaginal dryness or pain. Loss of libido can be treated with the use of a very low-dose testosterone cream. Finally, experts in the field have shown that transdermal estrogen used in a patch carries a much lower risk of heart attacks and strokes than oral estrogen. In addition, the patch does not increase the risk of blood clots or reduce libido. Currently, the evidence is accumulating that should you need to combat the symptoms of menopause with estrogen replacement, the patch is preferable. Clearly, hormone replacement therapy is not without its problems. However, like all approved medications, there are circumstances where the benefits outweigh the risks. Unless you have or have had a high risk of breast cancer, do not let fear of replacement therapy cause you to suffer with severe menopausal symptoms. When seeking hormone replacement therapy, talk to your doctor to ensure you get the right dose, in the right way, for the right amount of time. Patrick J. CASEY’S CORNER (from page 9) All of this is not to say people should not have more than one dog. But as Einstein implied, timing is everything. For people who know they will always want a dog in their life, it’s a great idea to have more than one. It makes the eventual loss of a dog easier to bear if you have another to care for. The ongoing relationship can be a great comfort and will help heal the deep wound the loss of a longtime companion inflicts. The key is to space them out. When should you get your second dog? About two to three years after getting your first. This gives you ample time to get to know and bond with your first dog and to establish yourself as the leader of your little pack. It also gives him time to develop his personality unfettered and learn the rules of the house. It’s much easier to train a second dog when you aren’t also trying to train a first. And when the time comes, the second dog should be the opposite sex of the first. Bringing two female dogs home on the same day is a set-up for your very own double-dog day afternoon. But dogs of the opposite sex spaced out by a couple of years will make for a continually harmonious household. Woof! I have a framed painting of a mother and child by Miklos Mihalovits. Measuring 40 inches by 33 inches, it is oil on canvas and is in absolutely excellent condition. Before I inherited it 40 years ago, it was in my grandmother’s home. I am considering selling it, and any information you can provide will be appreciated.

A:

Miklos Mihalovits was born in Budapest, Hungary, in 1888 and died in 1960. He was known for his paintings of nude women. Options for selling your painting are offering it up for auction at a good auction house or perhaps on eBay. Prices for his works have a wide range from $800 to $6,000.

Keep your sockets stacked

P.O. Box 2207 Palm Springs, CA 92263

When I am working with a student, the first Phone: 760.320.0997 thing I look for in their swing is how balanced they Fax: 760.320.1630 are. In this case, the definition of balance is the email: valleybits@msn.com way the sockets in your body remain aligned with each other. We human beings are designed with eight sockets: two in the shoulders, two in the hips, knees and ankles. The key to being in balance is to have the sockets on both the left and right sides in vertical alignment with each other. The goal in the golf swing is to keep these s o c k e t s aligned and in balance throughout the motion of the swing. Notice in the photos that I am perfectly balanced with my sockets stacked in vertical alignment, both at address and in my back swing. The number one swing fault I see is allowing the sockets to slip laterally, getting the golfer “out of balance”. As soon as this happens you have to compensate by shifting back into balance as you make contact with the ball. That’s a miss hit. In order to achieve more power and more control, get in front of a mirror and work on keeping your sockets properly stacked and balanced throughout your swing. PHOBIAS (continued): • Some phobias relate to what’s up above, such as the sun (heliophobia), the clouds (nephophobia), the moon (selenophobia), and the stars (siderophobia). Some folks are just afraid of looking up – they are called anablephobes. • Not all phobias seem that abnormal or uncommon. Lots of people might have a fear of death, known as necrophobia. But those with an extreme form might be terrified of being buried alive. A nosocomephobe has a fear of hospitals, a verminophobe is afraid of germs, and a hydrophobe has an irrational fear of water. • Individuals suffering from extreme agoraphobia rarely leave their homes, due to their fear of public or open spaces and the inescapable situations that may occur there. Only home is HRS: 2 MIN: safe. • Some phobias can be a learned behavior that comes from listening to others describe a traumatic event. An individual in one’s life can trigger a phobia, such as peladophobia, the fear of bald people. Those with nosto-phobia, a fear of returning home, may be able to contribute their panic to a specific incident. • People who are afraid of looking into mirrors have cataptrophobia, while those with cyberphobia have a fear of working with computers. A person with an anxiety about memories is a mnemophobe. • Don’t confuse levophobia, the fear of objects to a person’s left, with dextrophobia, the fear of objects to the right. • Although some of us fear the possibility of cancer, an extreme carcinophobe will convince himself he has cancer because he touched someone who has it.
