American quilt making has a history as rich and diverse as the country itself. Utilizing skills and designs brought over by the earliest settlers from Europe, quilting quickly took root in Colonial America and is still popular today. Tidbits weaves a picture this week of this much celebrated sewing craft that many consider an art form.

QUILTING (from page one) washing and cleaning while caring for an oftenlarge family. So, who had time for quilting? This was mainly reserved for those fortunate enough to afford household help. These were the women with enough time in their day for the luxury of decorative needlework. • Most quilting during Colonial times was done from May through November, when days were longer and there was more available sunlight. Quilting was rarely done by firelight, as the light was too dim for any fine stitching. • By about 1840 the textile industry had grown to the point that suitable fabric material was readily available to most families. Only then did quilting become a common way for women to express their creativity with design patterns and stitching. • Many old books contain stories of neighbor ladies gathering at someone’s home to hold an old-fashioned day-long “quilting bee.” The women would spend hours on end quilting, taking turns around the frame while others cooked up the grand meal that would be served that evening to the menfolk and children. It was a time of neighborhood fellowship, when families gathered to feast, socialize and sing together for fun and entertainment. • Some quilting sessions included only women helping a friend or neighbor finish a quilt. Such a meeting would be an ideal way for women to get together and share family news, exchange recipes, give child-rearing tips and in general, support each other. It has been said that next to attending church services, quilting bees were the primary means of contact that women had with each other.

OF S T E G NUG WLEDGE KNO

The art of quilting is not an activity limited only to women. Many men are no strangers to quilt blocks and stitching, and some even have their own shows. Michael James, a retired engineer, is known nationally for his unique quilt designs and innovative techniques. Ricky Tims, a macho “cowboy”, took up quilting as an adult when he inherited his grandmother’s sewing machine. He now travels the guild circuits giving speeches and conducting workshops.

• The most essential piece of equipment for hand quilting was the quilting frame, which consisted of four pieces of wood. Two strips long enough to hold the shortest width of a quilt would have heavy cloth attached along the length. The ends of the quilt would be basted or pinned to this cloth. The other two pieces of wood would hold the first two apart so that the ends of the quilt could be rolled up, leaving a tight section for the quilters to do their stitching. When one section was completed, the quilt could be rolled again, making a new section available for quilting.

• Some quilt patterns could be found in magazines as early as 1835, but they became more common by the mid-19th century. Magazines like “Godey’s Lady’s Book” tried to influence quilting styles of the day, encouraging women to try the more refined English patchwork and to use silk. It was not well accepted. The majority of American women kept using the designs that they were accustomed to.

• It was American author and futurist Alvin Toffler who made the following sage observation: “Profits, like sausages, are esteemed most by those who know least about what goes into them.” • In honor of October being National Pizza month, here are a few statistics: Approximately 3 billion pizzas are sold every year in the United States. Seventeen percent of all the restaurants in the country are pizzerias. If you’re like 93 percent of Americans, you eat at least one pizza every month. Pepperoni is the most popular topping, followed by sausage, mushrooms, onions and olives. And a Gallup poll found that kids between the ages of 3 and 11 would choose pizza over any other food for lunch or dinner. • Are you a dipsomaniac? The root of the word is from the Greek “dipso,” meaning “thirst” -- and we’re all familiar with the “mania” part. “Dipsomaniac” is just a fancy name for a drunk. • You may be surprised to learn that 43 percent of 6- to 9-year-old girls use lip gloss. Of course, if you’re a parent of a young girl, you may not be surprised at all. • A newly married couple sued the upscale resort in Chile where they spent their honeymoon when a swim in the pool turned the bride’s waistlength blond hair green. • The oldest known skis were found, perhaps unsurprisingly, in Scandinavia. The experts say the skis were made about 4,000 years ago.

• If you live in the state of Minnesota, you might want to keep in mind that it’s against the law to sleep with no clothes on. *** Thought for the Day: “Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask, and he will tell you the truth.” -- Oscar Wilde

It was one of the most popular components of FDR’s New Deal, and the legacy of the Civilian Conservation Corps can still be seen all across America in parks, roads and buildings. • Few people today know much about the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), but during the Great Depression, it helped a lot of people earn money needed to support their families. It was a public work relief program for unemployed men, providing vocational training through the performance of work related to conservation and development of natural resources in the United States from 1933 to 1942. • As part of the New Deal legislation proposed by U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt (FDR), the CCC was designed to aid relief of the unemployment resulting from the Great Depression while implementing a general natural resource conservation program on federal, state, county and municipal lands in every U.S. state. • Could this happen today? The legislation that created the CCC passed through Congress very quickly. Ten days after being introduced, the ECW Act was signed on March 31, 1933; on April 5, the War Department corps area commanders were tasked with beginning enrollment. • The first CCC enrollee was chosen on April 7, 1933, and subsequent lists of unemployed men were supplied by state and local welfare and relief agencies for immediate enrollment. • CCC camps were located in the general area of particular conservation work to be performed and organized around a group of up to 200 civilian enrollees in a designated numbered “company” unit.

• Enthusiasm for the program reigned supreme. By January 1934, the second year of the CCC program, 300,000 men were enrolled. In July 1934, this cap was increased by 50,000 to include men from drought-affected states of the mid-west. The temporary camps had also transitioned from tents to wooden barracks. An education program was established emphasizing job training.

• On June 28, 1937, the CCC was legally established, transferred from its original designation as the Emergency Conservation Work program. Funding was also extended for three more years, effective July 1, 1937. To be eligible, enrollees had to be U.S. citizens, 18 to 26 years old and could not be regularly attending school or possessing full-time employment. The rules were eventually relaxed some to include veterans of World War II.

I love the Starz original series “Spartacus: Blood and Sand,” and I am eager to know if the series will return for a second season. I know that the show’s star, Andy Whitfield, has been battling cancer, but I heard he was on the mend. -- Theresa F., Bowling Green, Ohio

A:

Andy had been making terrific progress. His nonHodgkin Lymphoma was in remission, he was back in training for “Spartacus,” and in an appearance at July’s San Diego Comic-Con, he said that he felt better than ever. However, Andy and Starz recently announced that the Andy Whitfield actor had to leave the series to immediately resume aggressive treatment for the recurrence of his cancer. Andy said in a statement: “It’s with a deep sense of disappointment that I must step aside from such an exceptional project as ‘Spartacus’ and all the wonderful people involved. It seems that it is time for myself and my family to embark on another extraordinary journey.” A representative for the network said the future of the series will be discussed at a later date. Starz still plans to air the show’s prequel, “Spartacus: Gods of the Arena,” in January 2010. It focuses on the House of Batiatus before Spartacus arrives in Capua, and stars returning cast members John Hannah and Lucy Lawless. ***

Everyday CHEAPSKATE

®

by Mary Hunt

An Open Letter to American Airlines Dear AA, You and I have had a close relationship for nearly 20 years, and it has been mostly wonderful. ® In the beginning, as we were getting to know each other, I was OK with being herded to the back Mary Hunt of coach as by I worked hard to gain favor with you. I was committed to loyalty. The day that I reached 25,000 frequent flier miles was a big deal for me. Wow. A free trip. But I wanted more. I wanted 50,000 miles for two free round-trip tickets. So I persevered. I flew and flew and flew. And finally, I made it. And you came through, just as promised. My husband and I loved that vacation in New England with free airfare and all. I was hooked. I made sure that all of my trips were booked on AA. You loved that, didn’t you! Over the years, we have logged nearly 1.5 million miles together. In fact, I am known in some circles as Miss American Airlines. And I thank you for my lifetime elite status. But things have changed. I haven’t seen an upgrade to first class in what seems like years. I notice you are booking the flights to full; there is not an open seat anywhere. I was one of your fans who enjoyed the food service in coach. It was edible and often quite good. When you discontinued that, I lived with nuts and pretzels for several years. Where have all the snacks gone? Oh, yeah. You now charge $6 for those nuts. And something like $12 for a

stale sandwich. No thanks. And $8 for a pillow and blanket? Oy. I do need to talk to you about baggage, and I’m not talking about childhood experiences that color my adult life. I’m talking about Samsonite, or in my case Kirkland. Though I appreciate your not charging me for checked luggage now that I am lifetime elite, what on earth are you doing charging others $25 per bag? Yikes! Have you considered using that money to perhaps improve the baggage service? As you know, my husband and I recently enjoyed a vacation in South Carolina on frequentflier-mile tickets. We arrived, but our luggage didn’t. L-O-S-T two bags, the sum total of everything we had brought with us. You told us the next flight in would be 24 hours hence, but we would be too far away for your delivery service. WHAT?!? Obviously, you forgot who I am. Million miler ... loyal flier ... Miss American Airlines. Imagine spending your first day of vacation with nothing more than the clothes in which you arrived. Yes, you found our bags and you delivered them outside of your delivery area, but only after I whined and carried on about being so put out. I don’t mourn so much for myself, because despite all the downgrading you’ve done, I retain my lifetime elite status. But I have to warn you that my eyes have been wandering. In a few weeks, I’ll be flying to Massachusetts. On Delta.

lifelong health Dr. David Lipschitz

Patients Need to Know Angioplasty’s Benefits In the most recent Annals of Internal Medicine, research shows that 88 percent of patients with known coronary artery disease undergoing a coronary angiogram and possible angioplasty believe that the latter procedure will prevent a heart attack. Eighty-two percent of patients believe it will prevent death from a heart attack. Sadly, neither is true. Angioplasty does, however, alleviate symptoms of coronary artery disease, such as decreasing the prevalence and severity of angina (chest pain) and improving shortness of breath. In this study, 32 percent of patients had no symptoms at all -- which essentially means that it was of no value to them. In an accompanying editorial, Dr. Alicia Fernandez makes a plea that physicians use a more explanatory and helpful informed-consent document, which would better inform patients about the benefits and risks of any procedure. Currently, before any procedure, patients are required to sign a witnessed informed consent that describes the complications associated with that particular therapy. For example, informed consent for an angioplasty indicates that occasionally emergency surgery is needed, and that there is a risk of heart attack, stroke, death and infections. Most patients sign the informed consent without reading it. The typical informed consent document generally does not include a description of the benefits or indications for the recommended treatment. Clearly, patients are much more likely to agree to an angioplasty if they believe the intervention will prolong life or prevent heart attacks. But would an asymptomatic man with proven coronary artery disease agree to this procedure if he knew that it had many risks with few evidence-based benefits? The answer is probably not, unless his cardiologist provides a compelling reason as to why the procedure is truly needed. On occasion the patient may be persuaded, but the evidence is undeniable that many coronary angiograms and angioplasties are unnecessary. I frequently see asymptomatic patients with proven coronary artery disease whose cardiologists insist on performing an angioplasty to clear blocked arteries. Angiograms and angioplasties are invaluable tools in the battle against heart disease and play key roles in diagnosis and treatment of patients. However, like all medical therapies, they must be used in the appropriate setting. Symptoms such as chest pain or shortness of breath can be indicators of heart disease. Upon investigation, findings such as an abnormal

EKG and a positive stress test will likely lead to an angiogram, which will accurately diagnose and define the extent of the disease. During the procedure, the cardiologist may perform an angioplasty that can often eradicate symptoms. Occasionally, findings from the angiogram may lead to a recommendation of open-heart surgery. If an acute heart attack is diagnosed, an angiogram and angioplasty to open up a blocked blood vessel is very beneficial. The angioplasty may prevent or reduce damage to the heart muscle caused by the blocked blood vessel. But for anyone with known coronary artery disease who is on appropriate medical treatment, an angiogram and angioplasty should only be considered for symptoms (chest pain, shortness of breath) and should not be done routinely to monitor progress or prevent further heart attacks. The most important message is to be fully informed in writing about the potential benefits and risks of any procedure recommended to treat any illness. While treatment of heart disease is an easy-to-understand example, the same information must be provided for the treatment of any serious disease, including cancers, strokes and many other illnesses. With life-threatening acute illnesses, immediate interventions save lives. But if the situation can handle a little extra time to understand the scope of your physician’s recommendation, it will be time well spent. In the case of many cancers, for example, it is important to understand not only the adverse side effects but also the proven evidence of benefit. Will the procedure cure the disease? Will it prolong your life? Will it improve the quality of your life? Make sure that the information is clearly provided in easy-to-understand terms. Ask for the data so that the percentages of benefit are clearly defined. Only with open eyes and an inquisitive mind can you be assured that the therapy is truly appropriate.

CASEY’S CORNER (from page 9) She wanted my help, but this woman has a marital problem, not a dog problem. She has a husband who doesn’t respect her legitimate fears and favors the dog’s well-being over that of his wife and grandchildren. At this point, she needs Dr. Phil, not Uncle Matty. Most people who have aggressive dogs don’t want to admit it because they 1) think it makes them a failure and 2) think it means a death sentence for the dog. Neither is true. You aren’t a failure for having an aggressive dog. You’re a failure if you do nothing about it. And euthanasia is rarely necessary. If wife and hubby were to come together, their household could most likely be salvaged. Lucy would be banished from their bed and signed up for professional training. Boundaries would be set and enforced. A semblance of peace would descend upon them -- and their cats. Barring that, Lucy absolutely must be kept away from all children, animals and anyone who isn’t this man and his wife. Denial, it’s at least as dangerous as that river in Egypt. Woof! You Say FICA, I Say

 Social Security Tax

Sometimes, I write a simple and straightforward column in which I explain what I think are some basic facts about Social Security. And then I’m surprised when readers jump all over me with e mailed “corrections” to my simple statements. Here are some examples:

Q: In a recent column, you said the Social

Security tax rate is 6.2 percent. Well, have you ever heard of FICA? I’ve got a note from my employer that says he withholds 7.65 percent of my salar y for FICA taxes. And ever yone knows FICA means Social Security.

A: You’re an old guy, right? And your employer

must be an old guy, too! I don’t think anyone under the age of 60 uses the term “FICA” anymore. And whether you call it the Social Security tax, or the FICA tax, I’m still right that it is 6.2 percent. FICA stands for the Federal Insurance Contributions Act. It’s the part of the law that authorizes employers to deduct taxes to pay for the Social Security program. For decades, a worker’s pay stub and W-2 form would have a deduction box labeled “FICA” or “FICA Tax.” And that tax was correctly understood by all to be the Social Security payroll tax. Then in the 1960s, the Medicare program was enacted. A separate tax was added to pay for the hospital insurance portion of this program. But because Medicare fell under the broad umbrella of Social Security law -- it’s technically “Title 18” of the Social Security Act -- the Medicare tax was just added to the “FICA” withholding amount. When Medicare came into being, people saw their FICA tax go up and just thought of it as an extra Social Security tax. However, even though there was just one label on the deduction box, a portion of that tax went to the Social Security program and a portion was funneled to the Medicare trust fund. But then in the 1980s, Congress eliminated the wage base for Medicare taxes -- while they maintained

such a base for Social Security taxes. For example, in 2010, you pay Medicare taxes on all of your income, but you pay Social Security taxes only up to $106,800. For that reason, employers had to break up the old “FICA” tax deduction box shown on their pay stubs and W-2s into two separate boxes. They’re usually labeled “Social Security Tax” and “Medicare Tax.” So if you look at your pay stub today, it probably shows a box for “Social Security Tax” and a separate box for “Medicare Tax.” And the Social Security tax rate is 6.2 percent, while the Medicare tax is 1.45 percent. Some old-fashioned employers out there may still use the term “FICA Tax” instead of things are way, justthe rate is 6.2 “Social Some Security Tax.” But either percent. too good to change...

Q:

In a column a few weeks ago, you said that the Social Security tax rate is 6.2 percent. Then you mentioned that self-employed people pay twice that amount, or 12.4 percent. As someone who works for wages, I was offended by the remark. I also pay 12.4 percent into Social Security. I pay 6.2 percent, and my employer kicks in another 6.2 percent on my behalf. Will you please set the record straight? We all pay 12.4 percent into Social Security.

turn to you and say, “Oh, here is that extra $6,200 of yours that we’ve been sending to the government for you each year.” I’m sure they don’t think of their matching Social Security contribution as your money. You’re right -- sort of! You are correct that employers are required to match the Social Security tax deducted from each employee’s paycheck. So, for example, if you make $100,000 per year, 6.2 percent of that (or $6,200) is taken out of your paycheck in the form of a Social Security tax. And your employer sends a matching $6,200 in taxes to the government. But does that mean that you contributed $12,400 in Social Security taxes? I don’t think so. Think of it this way. If the government abolished Social Security tomorrow, do you think your employer is going to increase your salary by $6,200? Will they

ANSWER: With age, it takes more time to retrieve information from the memory than it does in youth. That’s normal. It’s also normal for older people, given a sufficient amount of time, to recall the events of the preceding day or of special occasions. They might, on occasion, find it difficult to come up with a particular word, but they should be able to continue to perform tasks like balancing a checkbook. They might misplace things, as we all do. However, they can institute a search in an orderly and methodical way. It’s not normal to forget an entire event even when they are given promptings of what has happened. Misplacing things because the things have been put in strange places isn’t normal. An example is putting the car keys in the refrigerator. Neurologists, geriatricians (doctors who specialize in the treatment of the elderly), psychiatrists and psychologists administer tests that more precisely reflect a person’s memory and thinking capabilities. Having your mother tested isn’t a bad idea, and she should not take offense at the suggestion. Four medicines constitute the bulk of prescriptions written for Alzheimer’s disease. They are Aricept, Razadyne, Exelon and Namenda. The first three are usually prescribed for the early stages of this illness. None is a cure. They can slow its progression. Dozens of new medicines are currently under investigation. The booklet on Alzheimer’s describes this illness and its treatment in understandable terms. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 903W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. DONOHUE: I haven’t seen anything in your column about fungus foot infection. We have several family members who have it on their toes. How does it start, and what can be done for it? -- Anon. ANSWER: I have to believe you’re referring to athlete’s foot, the most common kind of fungal foot infection. Few people pass through life without an encounter with the fungi of athlete’s foot. The infection spreads through contact with shed skin that contains the fungus. Fungi thrive in warm, moist environments. A change of socks twice a day and wearing an alternate pair of shoes on successive days keep the feet dry. Antifungal foot medicines abound and come as ointments, creams or lotions. It can take a month or more for results. After the skin has healed, continue to apply the medicine for another two weeks. If over-the-counter medicines -- Micatin, Lotrimin AF and Tinactin are a few names -- don’t put an end to the infection, prescription medicines can. ***

It seems that when you’re in the hospital, you might not actually be “in” the hospital as an admitted patient. You might be “observed,” which is not the same thing. Sometimes a doctor will send you to the hospital, and you’ll be observed for a day or two to see if you should really be admitted. It seems that a criteria program called InterQual makes decisions about this. Its web page says that InterQual is “the undisputed gold standard in evidence-based clinical decision support.” Well, isn’t that nice. Whatever happened to our doctors deciding how sick we are? And how do you know what your status is? You have to ask. Theoretically, you could stay in the hospital in the observation mode for weeks - and never actually be admitted. Medicare considers that to be outpatient care, and it won’t pay for everything you're required to get, even though you’re in the hospital. Any nursing-home care you need after that won’t be paid for by Medicare unless you’ve spent three days in the hospital as an actual admitted patient. A Medicare pamphlet that addresses this subject states: “If you are in the hospital more than a few hours, always ask your doctor or the hospital staff if you are regarded as an inpatient or an outpatient.” And no matter how long it takes while you’re being “observed,” whether several days or weeks, that time doesn’t30 count toward a genuine 1 inpatient three-day stay if the next step means that you move on to a nursing facility. To find out more about this, you can call Medicare at 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227). Or go online to medicare.gov/publications and put the publication ID number in the search box: 11435. Fear is usually worrying about our unknown destiny. Without the support of others, it is frightening. Some of us rationalize our concerns by simply denying and accepting our fate, some continue to keep hoping for a solution, while others seek spiritual comfort. In life, we are exposed to loneliness. We learn our happiness is not guaranteed as well as how much we need our family, friends and others for their love and support. His first mystery, “The Big Bounce” (1969), was rejected by 84 publishers before it was published as an original paperback. • On Oct. 17, 1931, gangster Al Capone is sentenced to 11 years in prison for tax evasion and fined $80,000. These days, few take out their good china, even for special occasions. Noritake made several “Mystery Patterns” and often included a number. Your set was made around 1930. Many Noritake dinnerware sets can be seen in antiques shops in the range of $500 and up.

The letters “R.S.” stand for Reinhold Schlegelmilch, who founded his porcelain factory in Suhl, Germany, around 1860. He was later joined by his sons, Erdmann and Arnold. Their porcelain was produced in several cities in and around Germany. Your vase was made around 1880 and would probably fetch $1,200 in an antiques shop.

I recently stopped in an antiques shop and saw a Mission Oak desk. When the one horizontal drawer was opened, it contained an ink bottle holder. When the panel was tipped open, it revealed pigeonholes for storage. There was storage on either side, and the pulls were square oak. In the drawer, there was a round paper label with the words: “Auglaize -- New Bremen, Ohio.” The price was $275, and I offered $175 to the dealer. He wouldn’t go any lower than $200, so I didn’t take it. Now I am wondering if I should have taken his offer. What do you think?

A:

It all depends on how badly you wanted the desk. The dealer’s counteroffer of $200 was reasonable.

Q:

The enclosed mark is on my set of porcelain dinnerware. The set is a ser vice for 12 and includes the ser ving dishes -- it comes to a total of 100 pieces. The pattern name is “Myster y Pattern.” Against a white background, each dish is decorated with a scrolled design and bouquets of flowers on the rim. I believe the set was made prior to World War II. I recently inquired if the set was worth anything, and I was told the only value it holds is the sentimental value to its owner. Could you please tell me if this is true?

Cigar smoking was quite a popular activity with many men during this period. Women began collecting the colorful silk ribbons, and as a way to show off their collection, sewed them into their quilt patterns.

BLOWOUT

• In the mid-1920s, the colors of fabrics changed, as did quilts. Most women stayed with the traditional designs, but executed them in the new pastel colors. New floral designs became popular as well. • One quilting method used during the Great Depression was called “string quilting,” a technique where strips of cloth of varying widths were sewn together. This frugal method allowed women to use every bit of fabric and waste almost nothing. • While the mid-20th century saw a decline in quilt making, the craft underwent a renaissance of sorts during the 1960s. PHOBIAS (continued): • Some phobias relate to what’s up above, such as the sun (heliophobia), the clouds (nephophobia), the moon (selenophobia), and the stars (siderophobia). Some folks are just afraid of looking up – they are called anablephobes. • Not all phobias seem that abnormal or uncommon. Lots of people might have a fear of death, known as necrophobia. But those with an extreme form might be terrified of being buried alive. A nosocomephobe has a fear of hospitals, a verminophobe is afraid of germs, and a hydrophobe has an irrational fear of water. • Individuals suffering from extreme agoraphobia rarely leave their homes, due to their fear of public or open spaces and the inescapable situations that may occur there. Only home is HRS: 2 MIN: safe. • Some phobias can be a learned behavior that comes from listening to others describe a traumatic event. An individual in one’s life can trigger a phobia, such as peladophobia, the fear of bald people. Those with nosto-phobia, a fear of returning home, may be able to contribute their panic to a specific incident. • People who are afraid of looking into mirrors have cataptrophobia, while those with cyberphobia have a fear of working with computers. A person with an anxiety about memories is a mnemophobe. • Don’t confuse levophobia, the fear of objects to a person’s left, with dextrophobia, the fear of objects to the right. • Although some of us fear the possibility of cancer, an extreme carcinophobe will convince himself he has cancer because he touched someone who has it.
