• German historians place the emergence of bowling popularity in that country at about 300 A.D. Early Germans rolled or hurled stones at nine carved wooden clubs that they called kegles. For this reason, present-day bowlers are occasionally referred to as keglers. • Some of these early Germans bowled in kegelbahns, which were covered sheds containing lanes of smoothed wood or sun-baked clay. • If you’re among the thousands of people who’ve rolled a bowling ball down a darkened alley, then you’ve competed in an event called “Moonlight Doubles.” This PROOF unusual form of ADVERTISING

BOWLING (from page one) bowling competition originated in 1943 during World War II, when regular blackout drills were conducted in key U.S. cities considered nighttime targets for enemy bombers. All lights in and around homes, buildings, autos and streets were turned off, with stiff penalties for anyone violating the darkness rule. The bowling games were appropriately dubbed “Blackout Tournaments,” and the only dim lights allowed at all in the building were at the scoring table and on the pins. • Gobble, gobble, gobble! In bowling alley slang, a “turkey” is three strikes in a row. The term dates back to the late 1800s when, around the holidays, bowling alley owners presented a live turkey to the first team member to score three consecutive strikes. But don’t confuse a turkey with a triplicate, which is the term for three identical scores in a three-game series. • If three strikes in a row are a turkey, three consecutive “open” frames (those without a strike or spare) constitute a “buzzard.” Four consecutive strikes are called a “four-bagger,” five strikes are a “five-bagger,” and six in a row are a “six-pack.” It takes 12 consecutive strikes to score that perfect 300 game, which includes the two extras in the tenth frame. • Most folks connect Brooklyn with New York City, but to a bowler a Brooklyn is when a righthanded bowler’s ball strikes the left side of the head pin, and the reverse when a left-hander’s ball strikes it on the right. The “pocket” for a right-handed bowler is the “sweet spot” between the 1 and 3 pins, or the 1 and 2 if you’re a lefty. • Bowlers say they’ve been “tapped” when they’ve

The earliest bowling balls in the U.S. were made mostly from oak. Hardened rubber balls were not used until the early 1900s. Although the name of Marion Ladewig is not a familiar one, she achieved her fame by winning the Women’s U.S. Open Bowling Championship nine times from 1949 to 1963.

• If you’re from Eastern Canada or the New England states, you’ve probably tried your hand at candlepin bowling. In this ten frame game, the lanes are almost identical to the standard ten-pin lane, but the pins are 15.75” tall, 3” wide, and tapered on both ends giving them the shape of candles. The balls are 4.5” in diameter with a maximum weight of 2.7 pounds (with no finger holes). As in ten-pin bowling, the candlepins are spaced 12” apart, and making a strike with the small ball a challenging feat.

• Instead of two throws, the candlepin bowler has three chances to knock down all ten pins. The fallen pins remain where they are on the playing area and are used to help knock down the standing ones on subsequent throws. This gives the bowler an endless number of shot possibilities requiring a good amount of strategy planning and skill. As you might imagine, candlepin is a challenging form of bowling and has never had a perfect 300 game. The highest sanctioned score to date is a 245.

In the early 1600s, a group of dissidents decided to separate from the Church of England. Facing persecution for this choice, they left their country for Holland, and eventually made their way to the New World. • Discouraged by economic difficulties and the pervasive Dutch influence on their children, the Pilgrims decided to immigrate to America in 1617.

• The Pilgrims originally wanted to settle on the Hudson River in New York, but decided instead to remain where they were. They started constructing their living houses and storehouses in late December 1620, but only managed to get a few built before and during the first winter. They were hindered further

• Although the traditional Thanksgiving menu often features turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes and pumpkin pie, the first feast did not consist of these items. For this feast, the “turkey” was represented by several types of fowl. Pumpkin pie wasn’t on the menu because there were no ovens for baking, but they might have had boiled pumpkin. Cranberries weren’t introduced at this time. Due to the lack of flour, there was no bread of any kind. The foods included in the first feast included swan, duck, geese, venison, fish, lobster, clams, berries, dried fruit, pumpkin, squash and many more vegetables.

• When the Mayflower departed Plymouth, England, she was carrying 102 passengers, including three pregnant women. During the voyage one baby, which they named Oceanus Hopkins, was born, increasing the passenger total to 103. Three days before land was sighted, one passenger, William Button, died, so the Mayflower arrived with 102 passengers.

• Two Native American indians, Massasoit and Somoset, played a vital role in befriending the Pilgrims and protecting them from the danger of unfriendly tribes that inhabited the area.

• The first Pilgrims came to America in the Mayflower. They sailed from Holland to England to meet up with the Mayflower on another ship, the Speedwell, which left England with the Mayflower, but leaked so badly that both ships turned back. Finally, on September 16, 1620, the Mayflower again set sail for America. The voyage was more than 3,000 miles and beset by numerous storms at sea.

• Although so many of the Pilgrims who arrived on the Mayflower died, many more would have perished had it not been for the Native Americans teaching the Pilgrims to harvest foods. The first observance of Thanksgiving lasted for three days of prayer and thanks, and enough food was provided for 53 pilgrims and . 90 Native Americans.

Q: I am a great fan of Zachar y Quinto of

“Heroes.” Now that the show has been canceled, what else can I see him in? Also, will there be a sequel to “Star Trek,” and will he play Spock again? -- Marie K., Port Charlotte, Fla.

A:

Zachary will be back to reprise his role as Spock in the as-yet-untitled sequel to 2009’s smash-hit reboot of the popular sci-fi series, “Star Trek.” Pretty much all the principal stars are back on board for the follow-up movie, which is due to hit theaters in summer 2012. Quinto recently completed two Zachary Quinto movies, “Girl Walks Into a Bar” with Josh Hartnett and Danny DeVito, and “Margin Call” with Kevin Spacey, Jeremy Irons and Paul Bettany. ***

William Powell, who won the Best Actor Academy Award for his role in 1935’s “The Thin Man” (and again for “My Man Godfrey” and “Life With Father”), was married three times. His first wife, Eileen Wilson, bore him his only child, son William David, who committed suicide in 1968 after a period of poor health. He also was married to actress Carole Lombard from 1931-33, but his third and final wife, actress Diane Lewis, was the one who stuck. They were married from 1940 until William’s death from cardiac arrest in 1984 at the age of 91. He is buried in Desert Memorial Park in Palm Springs, Calif. Other famous “residents” include Frank Sinatra and Sonny Bono, as well as William Jr. and Diane (who passed away in 1997). Write to Cindy at King Features Weekly Service, P.O. I haven’t seen anything about “Sons of Anarchy” returning to FX. Please tell me it hasn’t been canceled. -- Pam M., Southbury, Conn.

A: Season three of “Sons of Anarchy” attracted

almost 5 million viewers per week, making it FX’s highest rated series ever, so you can bet it’ll be back for a fourth season. Charlie Hunnam, Ron Perlman and Katey Sagal all will return for a 13-episode season next year. I’ll keep you posted on the exact date as it becomes available. ***

Q: What can you tell me about actor Dermot

Mulroney? I love his acting and wonder why we don’t see more of him. -- Sharon F., Hamden, Conn.

A:

Dermot was slated to star in the “Rockford Files” reboot for NBC, but he was dropped when NBC execs were not satisfied with the pilot episode. Word is that Josh Holloway of “Lost” in is the running to take over the role of Jim Rockford. Dermot has been keeping busy, however, shooting the feature films “The Family Tree” and “Inhale,” and beginning work on “The Riot.” ***

A Painless Way To Save a Thousand Bucks Everyday CHEAPSKATE

Dear Mary: Thank you a thousand times! I took your advice and started® saving $5 bills. This year alone, I have saved $1,000 in $5 bills. Mary Hunt You have tobyreally commit not to use them, but soon you see why. At the end of each day I take any $5 bill I have received in change and place it in a box - which I keep safely tucked away and don't touch. It adds up fast, and I don't really miss it. I can’t thank you enough for this wise suggestion! -- Cindy, e-mail Dear Cindy: That’s fantastic news. Good for you. And now I’ll share a little secret with you. On our little grandson’s first birthday last July, I rolled up all the loose change we had saved and came up with about $1,000. I opened an investment account at ShareBuilder and named it “Elijah’s Education Account.” We are committed now to saving all of our pocket change to add to the account. Knowing that time is on our side, I’ve got him in a very aggressive portfolio. Currently, we’re up about 20 percent in this account, which for now makes playing the game a lot of fun.

Page 7

*** Dear Mary: I am recently divorced, and my ex-husband kept the house. I simply could not afford to do so. However, the mortgage payment shows up on my credit report and will continue to do so until he is able to refinance. This could be a long time, as the house is upside-down marketwise. As unpleasant as it is for me, I am considering filing for bankruptcy to clear just this debt. Can I do that? What do you suggest? -- Sharyl, California

Dear Teri: I prefer price per serving because price per pound has way too many variables. Years ago, a reader shared with us that she used “a buck a serving” as her benchmark, and that was the most she would pay. If she saw a package of four pork chops, she knew that would be a dinner for her family of four. So her “budget” for that item would be no more than $4, or $1 per serving. If it was on sale, she’d snap it up. These days, that might need to be adjusted to $1.50 or so, but you get the principle.

Dear Sharyl: You need to speak with a bankruptcy attorney. I can tell you that under most circumstances, secured debts are not subject to bankruptcy relief. In my opinion, your filing for bankruptcy would not change the fact that you are on the hook for that mortgage, married or not. The lender will hold both of you accountable for the debt until it is paid, the home is foreclosed or, as you suggest, you refinance. You may have other options or relief available to you of which I am not aware. Take a look at Steve Rhode’s website, http://GetOutOfDebt. org. Search “bankruptcy” to find contacts that he recommends, with whom you can have conversations about your possible options. Please exercise caution. There are lots of scam artists out there posing as bankruptcy relief professionals. You cannot be too careful. *** Dear Mary: Which is more economical, price per pound or price per serving? I must look like a zombie in the meat department just staring at the cases trying to decide which choice is the better buy. -- Teri, Washington

One of my dear friends recently lost their beloved dog. I encouraged her to share her experience in words, and she did: It’s been three weeks since my dog died. When I realized that just now, I made a quick and quiet wish that time would stop. Or better, reverse. I don’t want to be any further from the time when he was still breathing, still working that sniffer, still soft and warm in my arms. I don’t want it to be real. Some call it self-indulgence. I call it grief. I resent the clock and its relentless ticking. Time moving on. The earth spinning. The sun setting. The moon smiling, taunting. The only thing that feels good is the rain. Seems right. Some acknowledgment from the world that mine has forever changed. A nod from Mother Nature. Percy Burtch was born on March 1, 1996, the smallest of a litter of six dachshund/beagle/ Chihuahua pups. My roommate at the time plucked him from the bed of a pickup truck somewhere on the outskirts of Austin, Texas. On a college-girl whim, she brought Percy home to our apartment that didn’t allow dogs. On that very ordinary day, everything changed. It was clear from the beginning that Percy was, in a word, unusual. He was alternately standoffish and playful. Shy and bossy. Sweet and sour. Jekyll and Hyde. Even as a puppy, he gave the impression of having deeply entrenched opinions on the life he should be living, he should be keeping, 45 HRS: 1 the MIN:company the things he should be doing, eating, playing with, gnawing on. My roommate decided she couldn’t AdVenture Media hack it and put an ad in the paper: “Adorable puppy -- free!” He was adorable. But I feared she and the ad would mislead Percy’s next owner, making it likely he’d end up being passed off to yet another home or dumped at a shelter. As the voice mails came in responding to the ad, I deleted them. All of them. There was no way this handsome pup with the deep brown eyes was going to suffer that fate. I learned so much trying to figure that dog out. The two of us being of German stock, we were stubborn and butted heads. I was young, impatient and still indulging my desires for instant gratification and anything that felt good. He was food-aggressive, hyper-territorial, resistant to my amateur attempts at training -- a total Alpha nightmare. But the good trumped the bad, and I smelled

Depression Often Comes With the Arrival of Winter As colder weather rapidly approaches, many health practitioners are keenly aware that the “winter blues” is more than just an expression. Unless you live in the sunny and mild climate of the southern states, the incidence of depression significantly increases during the winter months. So, when the American Psychiatric Association recently updated their guidelines on the management of depression, it couldn’t have come at a better time as we enter into the winter season. The most striking recommendation is the emphasis on psychotherapy as a critical component of treatment. Therapy not only improves the symptoms of depression but also helps patients build the coping skills necessary to deal with many of the root causes of the condition. Frequently, patients ask me to prescribe antidepressants yet resist seeing a qualified therapist. While antidepressants are valuable tools in treating depression, these medications work best when taken in combination with ongoing psychotherapy. This may be done by psychiatrists occasionally, but more frequently, behavioral therapists see depressed patients either alone, with a spouse or a family member and, occasionally, in groups. The therapeutic value of talking with an expert, also referred to as cognitive behavioral therapy, is an essential element of treatment. The association does recommend using a rating scale to accurately diagnose and define the psychiatric symptoms and severity of depression. As a general rule, depression is usually defined as minor or major. A patient with minor depression feels glum or sad, experiences frequent fatigue, has difficulty sleeping and may either gain or lose weight. Importantly, the patient is not suicidal and is able to function adequately at home or at work. The condition can persist for years and is often referred to as dysthymia. Minor depression can often be helped significantly with psychotherapy alone. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, major depression occurs in 3.4 percent of the population. It affects people of all ages, ethnic groups, sex and socioeconomic status. To diagnose major depression, a patient must Some athings are just have a significantly depressed mood or loss of too good to change... interest or pleasure for most of the day for at least two weeks. Weight loss, insomnia, fatigue or loss of energy, a feeling of worthlessness and excessive guilt, a reduced ability to concentrate, and recurrent thoughts of death or suicide are common symptoms. These patients usually find it impossible to function in the community, and those deemed to be at risk for suicide should be admitted to a facility for observation and intensive treatment. The association’s recommendations focus primarily on major depression, an illness that must be taken very seriously. On occasion, the cause of major depression may be the presence of an illness, an adverse effect of a drug or may have been precipitated by a major psychological stress. It is important to determine if the patient has turned to drugs or alcohol or if substance abuse is a cause of the problem. Family and social issues must be carefully assessed. Dysfunctional relationships and physical or emotional abuse could be the root cause of a major depressive episode. Mostly, depression occurs for no good reason and is associated with declines in serotonin and

noradrenaline concentrations in the brain, which can lead to all of the disease’s symptoms. Antidepressants aim to increase the concentration of serotonin, noradrenaline or both. Responses to individual antidepressants vary from patient to patient, and multiple trials of different medications may be needed before symptomatic relief occurs. Anyone who remains chronically depressed or has had three or more episodes of major depression should be maintained on antidepressants indefinitely. When neither psychotherapy nor medications eliminate the symptoms of major depression, electroconvulsive therapy should be considered. In this procedure, mild electric currents are passed through the brain of sedated patients. Although the mechanism is ill understood, it is highly effective in improving symptoms. 10 percent of Americans AdApproximately Proof: are depressed. It is a true epidemic that is C. Noriega & A. CASEY’S CORNER (from page 9) potential. He was remarkably smart and curious, not to mention exceedingly loyal and protective. He chased away more than a handful of unsavory characters. He prevented a break-in while I was home alone. He made me feel safe when my peace of mind had been assaulted. He made me feel like skipping. Over the next 14 years, Percy and I reached an understanding. And I learned three very important things: 1) A good walk has the power to erase bad will. 2) It’s vital to stop and sniff. Often. 3) There’s nothing like a road trip to cure what ails you. I’ve done two things in the past two months of which I’m very proud: When it became clear that Percy’s time would be shorter than expected, I cleared my calendar as best I could and we hit the road. I will never forget the toothy, tongue-dangling grin on his face as we crossed the Continental Divide together for the umpteenth time. And two weeks later, when it was obvious that Percy’s kidneys would not rebound, that his quality of life was not what he deserved, was not what I wanted for him or would want for myself, I asked his vet, an exceptionally kind and compassionate man, to come to the house to administer an injection that would end my little guy’s suffering. And he did. Rest in peace, sweet Percy. We had a great ride. is eligible for Social Security. And if a person doesn’t qualify for free Part A coverage in one of the ways I just described, anyone 65 or older can buy Medicare hospital insurance. But the premiums can be rather steep, running as high as $461 per month. Part B of Medicare, which covers doctor’s visit, lab fees and other medical expenses, is not covered by Medicare taxes. It’s paid by monthly premiums that are either deducted from your Social Security by Tom Margeneau checks or billed quarterly if you’re not getting Social Security. The premium is currently $110.40 per month for most people. So once we get you free Part A coverage (I said the good news is coming), you’ll still have to buy Part B Medicare. Now to answer your questions. No, your husband can’t transfer some of his Social Security credits to your record in order to make you eligible for Social Security and Medicare. Nor can you buy the work credits you need to make you insured for these programs. The only way you can receive these credits is by working and paying Medicare taxes. You could Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2010 I robbed the cradle and married a guy buy Medicare Part A coverage when you turn 65 as I three years younger than me. This may be coming explained above, but that won’t be necessary. Please review carefully. Double check:  Phone Number(s)  Spelling back to haunt me! I will be 65 this December. Why? Cradle Robber Can Get Medicare From Younger Husband Q:

Page 11

Because he will technically be eligible for benefits in December (by turning age 62), you can file for Medicare on his record at the same time. It’s a good thing you didn’t really rob the cradle like my wife did. I’m five years younger than her, so when she turned 65, she couldn’t get Medicare on my record because I was only 60 and not old enough for Social Security. And here is some bonus good news. You might be able to save yourself $110.40 each month by declining Medicare Part B coverage. The law says that if your husband is working and if you are covered by his employer’s health insurance, then you don’t need to take Part B at this time. Later, after he retires, you will have to take Part B, but you won’t have to pay any late enrollment penalties. A few years ago when I still worked for the Social Security Administration, your husband would have been required to actually file a claim for Social Security benefits. And you would file for spousal benefits on his record. Then your claims for cash benefits would be put in suspense because he is working not due monthly Social Security checks  Prices and  Hours yet. But just the fact that you both would have been on the Social Security rolls would have made you eligible for free Part A Medicare at 65. However, I was recently talking to a former SSA colleague who still works for the agency. And he told me they changed the rules and you are no longer required to actually file a claim for Social Security benefits. Apparently, now they just push a few buttons that fool the computers into thinking you’re eligible for Social Security on your husband’s record. And that gets you the Medicare coverage you need. So, call SSA’s toll-free number at 800-772-1213 and make an appointment to get those buttons pushed!

Before I answer your questions (and I’ve got some good news coming for you), I’ve got to give some background information to help you and my other readers understand the eligibility rules for Medicare. There are two basic parts to Medicare. Part A provides coverage of in-patient hospital bills. It’s paid for by Medicare taxes deducted from your paycheck when you are working. And just like Social Security coverage, you usually need 10 years of work and tax payments to qualify for Medicare Part A. If a person hasn’t worked long enough to be insured, he or she could get Part A on a spouse’s record IF the spouse

As we age, my husband and I face a major wake-up call. We have enjoyed wonderful lives, but in our eyes, we now foresee the world getting uglier, meaner and more competitive than we could have ever imagined. Our hope has always been that our population would become more educated, healthier and more caring about others. However, in ever yday conversation with our families, friends and neighbors, we mostly discuss negative topics. Do your readers also sense this trend?

We were babes in woods about what retirement would really be like. To our surprise, we miss working. Is this a common experience?

email: valleybits@msn.com

A:

Many retirees often have a similar experience. Making adjustments when moving from family, friends and fellow workers does surprise us. It takes time to overcome changes and reinvent ourselves. Usually, less income and inflationary expenses add to our frustration. Also, when a husband is a new retiree, he is around 24 hours per day, which affects his partner’s routine, such as doing her work, seeing her friends, shopping and cutting back on her free time as well as

• Don Carter, a bowling great of the 1950s and 1960s, has earned the title “Mr. Bowling.” This six-time Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) “Bowler of the Year” was the first professional bowler to reach a six-figure annual income. In his younger years, he played on a professional baseball minor league farm team but asked to be released from his contract after a year because he felt he wasn’t major league material. • Bowling legend Earl Anthony was the 1970s “Bowler of the Decade” and “Master of the Millennium” and was the first bowler to break the $1 million mark in earnings. He racked up 41 career PBA titles and 42 second-place finishes and was in the top five finishers 144 times, as well as being named the PBA’s “Player of the Year” six times.

DOLLARS & SENSE: From page 14 card debt still comes with a price tag in the form of hefty interest and fees. Spend your money on necessities that have a future value, like vehicle tires. Decide if you really need a new giant, flat screen high-def television, or if you just want it. Consider what you would do for income should you suddenly lose your job. Millions have been blindsided by that ugly experience within the past year. That is a spash of cold, hard reality, and you do not want find yourself facing that nightmare completely unprepared. Find out how much unemployment benefits would be in your area and how long you’d get them. Calculate how much of your current bills you could actually continue to pay each month. Add in your savings and re-do the math: How much longer could you stretch out your survival if you started gearing your spending down now? Vow to spend only on necessities for one month to see what it feels like. If you need encouragement to take some of these austerity steps, just attend a job fair and talk to hungry job seekers. If that doesn't wake you up, nothing will. Better wake up soon, because it really isn’t over. The strongest muscles in the human body are all underneath you; glutes, hamstrings and quads. The average golfer doesn’t use these muscles in the swing; they use only the upper body to create power. To create leverage in the swing you want to push off from the ground, which will help the hip release forward creating more power. Noticetsby is “how atch the red lines in ems the left photo no that I have e all the kneesads. The the equally flexed to create at the top of you lp the the backswing and ready to ually op of the “spring” for- h the ing is to ward through the ball. The key to the forward swing is to go from the ground up and NOT from the top down. Start with the right foot pushing off, which rotates the hip through impact. It is important to note here that the right hip rotates up in the forward swing and not down. Too often, I see golfers drop the right hip down into impact, which slows the rotation. You want the hip to stay high going through impact so it can continue to accelerate all the way to the finish. If you want to create more power in your swing, work on using your legs to create more leverage by supporting the hip rotation up through the ball.
