• Since her childhood, Bullock always had a love for music and a natural talent for singing. While she was still a student at Sumner High School in St. Louis, her elder sister would take her to various nightclubs around the city to listen to the different styles of musical performers. On one such visit, Bullock met Mississippi-born rhythm and blues musician Ike Turner, and was greatly impressed with his talent and style.

SOLAR SYSTEM (from page one) the movement of stars to help them understand the heavens. • Examples of ancient Rome’s contribution to space science are the names of the planets. The association of certain planets with certain attributes of gods or goddesses harkens back to the Sumerians, but Roman names were directly appropriated. Examples are Mercury, Venus, Mars and Saturn. • Our solar system only has eight planets, not the nine you were taught in school. That’s because the International Astronomical Union reclassified Pluto as a dwarf planet in 2006. • To qualify as a planet, an object needs to orbit the sun, have enough gravity mass to pull itself into a spherical shape, and have cleared out its orbit of other material. It’s this third requirement that Pluto hasn’t fulfilled. Pluto is a fraction of the mass in its orbit, while the other planets are millions of times more massive than everything else in their orbits. • Pluto may have been downgraded from planet to mere dwarf planet, but it’s certainly not the only one found in our solar system. Three others have been discovered: Ceres, Eris and Makemake. Dwarf planets are objects that orbit the sun and have enough mass to form a sphere, but they share their orbit with other objects. As telescopes improve, more dwarf planets will likely be discovered. In fact, there may eventually be more dwarfs than planets.

• It was American author, producer, screenwriter and director Michael Crichton who made the following sage observation: “Whenever you hear the consensus of scientists agrees on something or other, reach for your wallet, because you’re being had.” • Statistics show that more babies are born in September than in any other month of the year. • Talk about bad luck: In May of 2009, two thieves broke into a jewelry store in Milwaukee, bagged up their loot and tried to make their getaway. On the way out of the looted store, they were confronted by two more thieves, who took the ill-gotten gains. No one ended up profiting from the crime, however; all four were arrested. • According to an estimate by the United Nations, there are more than 3 million shipwrecks on the ocean floor. • You may have heard of the turducken -- a chicken stuffed into a duck stuffed into a turkey -- but you probably didn’t know that a chef in the United Kingdom took the idea of nested fowl several steps further. Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall stuffed a woodcock inside a pigeon, inside a partridge, inside a pheasant, inside a chicken, inside a guineafowl, inside a mallard, inside a duck, inside a goose, inside a turkey. No word on how the 10layer dish was carved for serving. • If you’re not the sort of person who makes the bed every day, here’s some good news for you: Researchers in the United Kingdom have found that unmade beds are less likely to harbor dust mites, a common cause of asthma and allergic symptoms. *** Thought for the Day: “If you would be a real seeker after truth, it is necessary that at least once in your life you doubt, as far as possible, all things.” -- Rene Descartes (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

TINA TURNER (from page 2) Revue’s backup singers, the Ikettes, wove intricate and electrifying dance routines into their performances. “Proud Mary,” the duo’s interpretation of the Credence Clearwater Revival hit, was the duo’s greatest commercial success, peaking at number four on the Billboard Hot 100 in March 1971.The single eventually won a Grammy for Best R&B Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group. • By the mid-1970s, Tina’s personal life and marriage began to fail. Ike’s drug use led to increasingly erratic and physically abusive behavior. Their act was losing speed largely due to Ike’s refusal to accept outside management of their recording or touring, as well as the cost of maintaining his allegedly voracious cocaine h a b i t . Touring dates began to decline and record sales were low. Their last success was “Nutbush City Limits”, a song penned by Tina Turner about her Te n n e s s e e home town. • After a violent argument Tina Turner performing in 2008 before an appearance at the Dallas Statler Hilton in July 1976, Tina abruptly left Ike, fleeing with nothing more than thirty-six cents and a gasstation credit card. She spent the next few months hiding from him while staying with various friends. • Many believed that after Turner broke with Ike her career was over and she would not return to the music scene. But, with the help of her Australian manager Roger Davies, she proved them all wrong. In 1984 she released her multi-platinum and Grammy-winning album, “Private Dancer,” with her biggest hits “What’s Love Got To Do With It?” and “Better Be Good to Me.”

Television quiz shows have been around as long as television itself. Actually, quiz shows pre-date TV and were a popular form of entertainment on network radio. • “Major Bowes’ Original Amateur Hour” was one of the first national radio programs to feature contestants competing for prizes. Other early radio quiz shows included “Professor Quiz” (CBS 1936), which awarded $25 cash prizes to anyone who could stump the professor. A large number of quiz shows appeared on radio in 1937 and 1938. “Pot ‘O Gold” (NBC 1939) gave $1,000 to anyone who answered a telephone call during the show.

• “Wheel of Fortune” first aired in 1975 on TUES., NOV. 2 daytime network television. The current version has been syndicated in prime time since September 19, 1983. Its 28th season premiered 2010. • Today, “Jeopardy!” is a popular international television game show, originally devised by Merv Griffin, who also created “Wheel of Fortune.”

• Merv Griffin’s first idea for “Jeopardy!” used a board comprising 10 categories with 10 clues each, but after finding that this complex game board could not be filmed easily, he reduced it to two rounds of 30 clues, with five clues each in six categories. Early on, Griffin discarded his original name for the show, “What’s the Question?” after a network executive suggested

• On June 7, 1955. CBS TV premiered “The $64,000 Question,” the biggest jackpot program in radio-TV history up to that time. With host Hal March, the Tuesday night program drew an amazing 84.8 percent share of the TV audience, an incredibly huge share never matched before or since. Marine Captain Richard S. McCutchen became a national celebrity as an expert on cooking. Dr. Joyce Brothers would star as an expert on boxing.

• As a result of the scandal, quiz shows all but disappeared from prime time American television for decades. Those that continued to air had substantially reduced prizes, and many shows adopted limits on the number of games a player could win (usually five). Quiz shows became game shows, shifting focus from knowledge to puzzles and word games. A quiz for big money would not return until ABC premiered “100 Grand” in 1963. It went off the air after just three weeks.

• “Jeopardy!” first aired on NBC from 1964 to 1975 and again from 1978 to 1979. Its most successful incarnation is the current Alex Trebek-hosted syndicated version, which has aired continuously since September 1984.

• The 1954 Supreme Court ruling in Federal Communications Commission vs. American Broadcasting Co., Inc., 347 U.S. 284, determined that quiz shows were not a form of gambling. This ruling opened the door for their introduction to television.

James Snodgrass, who had sent registered letters to himself in advance of the show containing the correct answers. Such convicting evidence was irrefutable.

Q:

Is it true that a sequel to “Top Gun” is in the works? -- Fred D., Akron, Ohio

A:

All MiG-28s point to “yes.” While it is still in the early stages of development, “Top Gun 2” is in Paramount’s sights, although the production company will not confirm anything on the record at this time. Tom Cruise was said to have been approached for a cameo in the sequel, but studio officials are quick to deny that claim. I think it’s still a possibility that “Maverick” will make an appearance; they just want it to be a surprise for us fans, so they are denying it. However, all of us nosy-pants on the Internet make surprises quite difficult to pull off, wouldn’t you agree? ***

4 Ways To Watch Out for Scam Artists As we begin to see some glimmer of recovery from the longest and deepest U.S. recession in more than 70 years, here come the scam artists in full force, posing as sure signs® of help and support. The best way to make sure that you don’t fall for by Mary schemes, Hunt their get-rich-quick work-at-home scams, pyramid schemes and numerous other approaches promising employment and wealth -- but instead separating consumers from their money -- is to become educated. The more you know the better armed you will be to recognize a scam. Scam 1: Pay a fee; get a job. Whether it’s offering a work-at-home job or it’s a job search firm, no legitimate employer asks you for money upfront. This is a foolproof tip-off that something’s not right. And though there are occasionally legitimate ways in which you can work from home as an independent contractor, a 56-1 scam ratio currently exists in work-from-home ads. Those are extremely bad odds, suggesting that if you wish to work from home, don’t look to any outsiders to make that happen for you. Most of the time, you’re going to get burned. Scam 2: Pay now; get a loan later. Criminals set up fake loan companies that guarantee

Everyday CHEAPSKATE

consumers loans, but with a serious catch: You have to pay a fee before a loan is approved. Fees can run you several thousand dollars. You pay the fee but never get the loan. And you lose the fee, as well. According to the Federal Trade Commission, it’s against the law to charge an upfront fee for a loan. And the FTC says that no legitimate lender would guarantee that a consumer will get a loan. Don’t fall for it. Scam 3: “Stop Foreclosure Now!” You saw an ad or received a personalized letter from a firm that says it found you by looking through foreclosure notices. The firm states that it guarantees it will stop your foreclosure. Once you’re on the hook, the company poses as if it is arranging negotiations on your behalf. Then it announces that it can work a deal with your lender to stop all foreclosure proceedings, for a fee. A really big fee. That’s when it may instruct you to stop making payments to your mortgage company, which spells certain doom. It also may tell you to stop contacting your lender and to make your mortgage payments to them instead. Oh, please...! Scam 4: You have the right to negotiate. The company claims it can arrange to pay off your credit card debt for 10 to 50 percent of what you owe. These companies, some of which claim to be nonprofits, tell you to make payments to them instead of to your creditors, promising to hold your money in a special account to pay your creditors on your behalf when they agree to the settlement. If you stop making payments to the creditors, late fees and interest usually will accrue, possibly causing your original debt to double or triple. This will result in negative information on your credit report, lawsuits from your creditors, garnisheed wages or even a lien on your home. Instead, for help in locating a credit counselor, try the National

Sleeping Well Blankets Many Healthful Benefits

Getting a good night’s sleep is an important part of your health, but new information shows that restful slumber offers more benefits than you might think. People who sleep eight or more hours per night will live longer and have a lower risk of death than those who tend to sleep less. New research even shows that sleep is an important part of weight loss. In the Annals of Internal Medicine, a recent report showed that people who sleep eight hours a night are more likely to lose weight when dieting than those who sleep six hours or less. Moreover, the well-rested individuals lose much more fat and less muscle. This is yet another study in a litany of projects demonstrating the incredible healing power of a good night’s sleep. Sleep has many restorative effects on the body. It leads to complete healing of muscle that is subtly damaged during the wear and tear process of an active day. Critical for normal metabolism, sleep also conserves energy and benefits the ability to retain what was learned the previous day. You also asked what husband No.1/No. 3 might be due from your Social Security account if you pass away. He would be eligible for widower’s benefits on your record IF your rate is higher than his own. by Tom Margeneau Or to put that another way, his own Social Security retirement payment could be supplemented with widower’s benefits up to your retirement income level. For example, if he is receiving $1,800 per month, and your Social Security retirement rate is $2,000 per month, he’d get an extra $200 in monthly widower’s benefits upon your death. On the other hand, if he is getting $1,800 per month and your rate was only I am 68 years old and getting widow’s $1,500 per month, he wouldn’t be due any widower’s benefits from Social Security. rate is $2,000 per month. You’re getting a Social Security check for $2,000, so understandably, you just assume it’s your widow’s benefit. But on paper, you might actually be getting your $1,500 retirement payment plus $500 in widow’s benefits. You could make a quick call to your Social Security office to find out on which account(s) you’re actually drawing benefits. Finally, I assume you know that husband No. 1/ No. 3 would not be due any of your widow’s benefits from husband No. 2 following your death. Again, he would only be due widower’s benefits on your retirement record to the extent they exceed his own benefits. *** I am 70 years old. My husband is 86 years old and in ver y poor health. Readers frequently ask me why Social Security is so complicated. And I always tell them it’s because people lead such complicated lives -- as your questions illustrate. The answer to your first question is “no.” If you make husband No. 1 your new husband No. 3, you will continue to be eligible for widow’s benefits from husband No. 2. And the key element of that scenario is that you are remarrying after age 60. As I’ve explained before in this column, the law used to say that any remarriage at any time in life would cancel out any widow’s benefits that a woman was getting from a prior husband. But to skirt that old law, resourceful oldsters who were smitten with each other used to simply move in together without benefit of a marriage ceremony. And that frequently led to embarrassing headlines like: “Law forces woman to live in sin to keep Social

The button pushing will also trigger the one-time $255 death payment. That simple button pushing procedure works because they already have all the information they need about you in their files. Had you been getting your own Social Security retirement benefits instead of wife’s payments, you would have been required to file an application for widow’s benefits and provide them with a marriage certificate as well as the death certificate. Also, if you were under age 66, the process wouldn’t be quite so simple. In that situation, you would be given the option of filing for reduced widow’s benefits at the time of death or waiting until age 66 to collect full widow’s benefits. If you have a Social Security question, Tom Margenau has the answer. Contact him at thomas.margenau@comcast. net. Maybe if the patients had enough vitamin D to begin with, they wouldn’t have needed surgery in the first place. The D vitamin is essential for bone health and muscle function. Learning to Say ‘No’

Q: My husband and I have moved to a

delightful senior community and have been enjoying our first months here. However, because we have not settled in yet, we have turned down the opportunity to join numerous clubs that have welcomed us. My husband is anxious to join, but after not having a playmate at home and raising our family, I believe we have earned partner playtime. I know he wants to get golfing, but I hope to convince him that I need him, too! What is the best way to do that?

A:

This is your opportunity to reset and redefine your priorities and options. You are in your new castle. Now is the perfect time to think differently. Get socially involved once you are mentally prepared. Be patient with your husband and openly express your feelings about the future. Suggest how wonderful it would be to participate in new activities as partners rather than each of you doing your own thing. It is possible that he has not previously thought much about your wishes. Now is the time to do so! Compromise is the key word.

Hang in there with your hurting friend. Offer to spend some time with just the two of you. No doubt your wife is also concerned, but he may prefer that she does not join in, simply because he may feel her presence is a reminder that his partner is now gone. By telephoning, scheduling some of your hobbies together and having breakfast occasionally, you can encourage him to remain engaged with life. One “wise tale” often expressed by widows is that most widowers need at least a year to grieve. True or not, in the short run, men find closure to be difficult. The need to assume the responsibilities their mate formerly managed is frustrating, and often they do not have the knowledge or willingness to pick up the slack. It becomes draining trying to process legal paperwork, deal with family and relatives, and having to consider the possibility of moving. Frustrations abound.

Q: I have a child’s cup that was made in the

early 1930s or possibly earlier. It was mine as a child, and my mother saved it for me all these years. Marked on the bottom are the words, “Edwin M. The height of the cup is almost 3 inches; it has a gold rim and is still in mint condition. I would appreciate any information you can provide.

A:

Edwin M. Knowles China Co. was located in East Liverpool, Ohio, from 1900 to 1963. They made semi-vitreous dinnerware. Children’s cups and dinnerware are very popular collectibles. Your Little Boy Blue cup would fetch $25 to $50 in an antiques shop. ***

This mark is located on the back of a plate that was given to my parents as a wedding gift in 1928. Also included with the mark, there is a circle with the words, “Stouffer Studio.” Eleven inches in diameter, the plate is decorated with pastel flowers against a white background and a wide band with gold embellishment. It has a removable handle and is still in perfect condition. Would you tell me something about my plate and its worth?

The heat CLIP AND SAVE the sun provides for us originates from nuclear fusion at its core. At a distance of 93 million PRE-SEASON miles (150 million kilometers) from Earth, the light it produces takes about eight minutes to reach us. • A light-year measures the distance light travels in the period of one Earth year. • Did you know that the sun is just one star among 200 billion such sun/stars in our galaxy, the Milky Way? A number of these suns are immensely larger than our own and, in fact, many of them make our sun quite miniscule in comparison. Our world is just one planet orbiting one star in a galaxy of 200 billion stars. • Robotic spacecraft from Earth have now visited or orbited every planet in our solar system, and more are on their way to visit some of the dwarf planets. Man has explored the sun, the moon and many asteroids. And now some of the oldest spacecraft still active — NASA’s Voyager spacecrafts — have almost reached the sun’s heliosphere.

• Astronomers now estimate that the universe contains multiple trillions of stars organized into billions of galaxies. Trying to comprehend its incredible, endless immensity is literally staggering to the human mind! DOLLARS & SENSE: From page 14 Systems. MERS is party (as nominal mortgagee) to each mortgage transaction, as well as an online computer registration system for documents. If there’s a case of foreclosure where the lender needs to produce facts, MERS has them. Your note can be sold multiple times, and it will be tracked the whole way by MERS without you needing to sign anything. Or, as a party to the deal, MERS also can file for bankruptcy. According to the MERS website (www.mersinc.org), all the biggies use them, including the Federal Housing Administration, Department of Veterans Affairs, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Unfortunately, MERS is now embroiled in the foreclosure battle as some judges have decided that MERS has no legal standing in foreclosures, since it doesn’t actually own the loans. Hence the halt in foreclosures in many states. Best bet: If you face foreclosure, find the money to hire a good attorney. Many amatuers don’t have the time necessary to invest in practicing their short game to the point where they can become consistent and confident with their chip shots. Therefore, a creative alternative is to use the putter around the green instead of pitching wedge or sand wedge, provided of course that conditions of the shot are favorable for the putter. If the grass is short, growing toward the hole, and there are no obstacles that interfere with the putt, don’t hesitate to use your putter. But what I find many of my students do when putting from just off the green is they get too quick and jab at the ball instead of using their natural, smooth stroke. When you set up to your putt make sure your grip is tension free, ball placement is the same as a normal putt, and you use your natural putting stroke without trying to jab at the ball. The more you incorporate all the elements from your natural setup and putting stroke the more consistent you will be from just off the green.

PHOBIAS (continued): • Some phobias relate to what’s up above, such as the sun (heliophobia), the clouds (nephophobia), the moon (selenophobia), and the stars (siderophobia). Some folks are just afraid of looking up – they are called anablephobes. • Not all phobias seem that abnormal or uncommon. Lots of people might have a fear of death, known as necrophobia. But those with an extreme form might be terrified of being buried alive. A nosocomephobe has a fear of hospitals, a verminophobe is afraid of germs, and a hydrophobe has an irrational fear of water. • Individuals suffering from extreme agoraphobia rarely leave their homes, due to their fear of public or open spaces and the inescapable situations that may occur there. A person with an anxiety about memories is a mnemophobe. • Don’t confuse levophobia, the fear of objects to a person’s left, with dextrophobia, the fear of objects to the right. • Although some of us fear the possibility of cancer, an extreme carcinophobe will convince himself he has cancer because he touched someone who has it.
